I've been here twice in the past month while traveling to Boise on business. So far I've had the roast cauliflower, spicy duck ramen, and the American burger. I also tried the mission fig cake and the cobbler of the day. Cauliflower? Awesome. Ramen? Crazy good. Burger? Delicious? Desserts? Pretty much perfect. I've never had to wait for a table. The waitstaff is very good. They have really nice local cider, and the house G&T is quite nice. On a side note, I've tried to go to another restaurant down the street that isn't a spoon or knife, and I could never get a table. Why are people waiting in line to get there when Juniper is a block away? read more

We have dined at Juniper on several occasions. The food is always delicious, but despite that, I don't think that we will be back again. A couple of reasons why. First and foremost, this place is LOUD! Our last visit was as a group of four. Seated at small table it was not possible to hear what the person directly across was saying. After an hour or so I could not exit the restaurant fast enough, just to stop the sonic assault on my ears. Second, the drink service needs improvement. On both of our last two visits we have been left waiting (and waiting, and waiting...) for our second drinks to arrive. We typically request a drink when we first sit down, and a second when we place our dinner order - to arrive with the meal. On both occasions our glasses have been empty when dinner arrived, and our drinks were not served until we had nearly finished our meals. Both of these issues are easy to fix. A few sound absorbing materials would reduce the noise level to a tolerable level. And a bit of work on scheduling should fix the far-too-late beverage delivery. We'll check back occasionally to see if at least the acoustic issues have been resolved. read more

This place is great! Came here with some friends for some drinks and dinner and really enjoyed it. We tried the burger and the Trout po boy and let me tell you, they were both delicious. The trout Po boy has crispy fresh trout and a delicious roll. It was nice and light but had great flavor. The burger was also delicious. We substituted the pork belly fries and they were he star of the show. Lots of pork belly and a blue cheese sauce. The one downfall is that this place is pretty price. You can easily get a burger equally as tasty for far less and a better atmosphere. read more

I miss pre-pandemic juniper. I have tried but it's time to hang it up. Poor food quality and portion size for what you pay for. My wife and I ordered a pizza as well as the beef medallions and risotto which left me wondering... "where's the beef". Got together for dinner with a group of friends and had an incredible dinner here! Liked the more casual atmosphere. We had 3 apps; The pork belly fries (Amazing!), Brussel Sprouts (Great!) and a Cauliflower Curry (Great). Then for dinner I had the Buffalo Burger Melt (Which was Legit!!!) so good! Love this place and it is my go-to (along with Red Feather) downtown when entertaining folks new to Boise. Start with the Roasted Cauliflower (which is served in a curry sauce) and Pork Belly Fries. Order the Snake River Farm Beef Medallions for your entree - I've recommended them to dozens of people and have never heard a complaint. Skip the Fried Olives - not enough in the order to satisfy even the most petite diner. And be careful with drink orders - while the specialty drinks from the menu seem to have alcohol in them, ordering a vodka & soda or gin & tonic seems to result in a glass of soda or tonic that has been waved in front of the corresponding alcohol bottle, but got no closer to experiencing any of the contents. read more

The other special was a 3 oz. duck breast on large spoonful of parsnip puree and 2 asparagus stalks--overall, again $30!!! Both dishes came topped with micro greens, the were certainly micro in number. Overall, I liked this place and the service was very very good!!! I am a beer guy and they have a good amount of beer on tap but they are not listed on the menu. I found this terribly annoying! Who wants to make the server read off a 10-ish beer list every time you want a beer. We had the gin and tonic -it was super tasty but as a previous reviewer posted I do not think they applied the gin from anything larger than an eye dropper. We had the olives for our app, they were ok. My son ordered the Pork Belly fries, which were super good! The Duck Ramen was well done and very tasty. The Pear and Fig Grilled Cheese was light and a little bland. If they would add the candied bacon from my scallops it would have really upped the flavor. Juniper is a must try place in downtown Boise. I have been here quite a few times, from brunch to late night happy hour. The food is always well made and absolutely delicious (never had anything I didn't like). Their ramen is one of my favorite items, as are their brussels sprouts, their fries (both the rosemary and chili w/ pork) and their beef medallions. The restaurant has a great ambiance; low lighting, a beautiful old brick wall, high ceilings and well spaced seating. The service has always been great too. I would've given a 5 if the service had been better and they have some weird rules. If you sit outside you get a different menu than the inside and you're not allowed to order off the outside menu. This place is okay. The atmosphere is really nice with dim lighting and great service -- That was probably the best part. The dishes are little bit pricey and just okay. I ordered the Pork Belly fries and Spicy Duck Ramen. The Pork Belly fries came out in a big dish; plenty to go around. I don't recommend the Spicy Duck Ramen; bland, not enough broth, not the "normal" Ramen you'd expect. Good news is that this place is vegan friendly! I'm done with this place. Used to be the service, now it's the chef and the food. Service was the only positive part... you know what the biggest shame is? How great the atmosphere is and what this place COULD BE. I almost enjoy the food here better than any other place in town. Almost... Where do I begin? Well, I'm regularly in this place getting what might be my favorite salad in town, the Brussel Sprout Salad - one that I can say I've probably had at least 5 to 10 times before. In fact, just two nights ago I was in here with my father - someone I recommended this place to, never again - and I had it. I got it tonight. When it was brought to me and my friend (he had it as well), we had to ask the waiter if they made a mistake because this was a kale salad with shaved Brussels on top. He came back from the kitchen and told us the Chef said "this is how he's always made it" - this was the moment I lost it. Don't lie to me. I'm not your GF sitting at home wondering where you are at midnight- I'm someone who eats here regularly And knows EXACTLY what comes out of this kitchen. The food here is pretty great; it's definitely fresh. The environment is a bit loud and the bartender mumbles likes a muthatrucker which sucks for people who are hard of hearing. I would also say the bartender isn't too knowledgeable of the draft beers that are being carried here. The food- I had the BLT salad with fried chicken and thought it was pretty delicious! I enjoyed it and would recommend it to others. I'm sure I'll be back again the next time I come to visit. read more

I visited Boise on a lark from Salt Lake City and wanted to experience the lovely downtown area so I decided upon brunch at a hip looking spot. I have to say the overall experience was more of a C- for me but I wouldn't be beyond trying again to see if that was a fluke, but Boise has too many offerings for me to waste $30 here again. I was warmly greeted and offered inside or outside seating. I chose outside and was told that it is communal style, which I find charming. The seating was comfortable and there were patio umbrellas to mitigate the 101 temperature. I was greeted pretty quickly to order drinks and then somewhat longer for food but I was enjoying people watching. Unfortunately, wait times for service grew longer and longer to the point of irritating me. I had to flag down other servers for refills of water/iced tea and for my check. Eventually I just went inside to flag down another person to pay my bill. Not fun. Food-wise, the experience was mixed. I ordered brioche french toast and gravy biscuits. I must say, the french toast was exquisite and expertly made. The toast was neither soggy nor overdone and the syrup had a delectable flavor. The gravy biscuits however were messily plated and had an odd flavor. I don't know if there was cheese overkill or too much spice but I did not enjoy them at all. The biscuits were also rather hard. This shouldn't weigh much in my review but I was also very unamused to be charged $2.50 for a refill of iced tea that wasn't even that flavorful and that I had to flag someone for. Please tell patrons if refills are not free (which iced tea and black coffee should be complimentary anyway). For ambiance, Juniper is highly recommended. Stopped in for the first time yesterday evening. This place was pumping with the early dinner crowd. The bar was mostly empty though so we opted to sit there. The bartender seemed a little in the weeds. She smiled but didn't seem all that interested in taking care of us. Our drinks were slow to come but we're delicious. We ordered a couple appetizers which were also VERY slow to arrive but were also very good. The fried olives make for a weird solo dish but would be amazing as a garnish. The prosciutto wrapped peaches with whipped goat cheese and arugula was over the top good. So good in fact I just changed this from a 3* to a 4 haha. Came for an appetizer and cocktail. It was a lovely day and we sat outside. We got the baked Brie which was amazing. I would go back for that alone. Gin and tonic had a unique twist. My one complaint was that the menu said there was HH while we were there but the waitress told us they were no longer doing HH on the weekend but just hadn't updated their menu. I did not love the new drink menu, it felt very heavy on gin and there were not many things I was anxious to try. The food was...decent, but unexciting. The baked Brie was a pretty small portion, though the pastry was yummy. The chopped salad was fine, just not as delicious as I expected from others' reviews. The truffle Mac and cheese was lacking in truffle. Delicious cheese, but the sauce needed a better binder, it ended up just cheese and noodles. Which is still tasty, don't get me wrong! I had it with duck confit, and enjoyed the duck flavor. A bit more truffle oil, a good beschamel base to the cheese, and it could have been a great dish! However, everything would have tasted much better if we hadn't had to wait so long for it! We had a reservation, but still had to wait half an hour at the standing bar, in the middle of the restaurant, with people squeezing past us constantly. After being seated, the food still took regrettably long to come, over 45 minutes. The waitress and hostess did their best, and were very apologetic, they just had too many customers to handle! My aunt and I were seeking a nice dinner out since she was visiting from Seattle. We were grabbing coffee and spotted this eclectic and quaint restaurant. The inside was comforting and had a nice vibe. We then were presented with the menu and it did not disappoint. What we liked was the fact that pretty much all of the ingredients are local!I ended up ordering the grilled chicken salad (sub shrimp) along with miso soup. Our waitress was very attentive and came to check on us a good amount of time which we appreciated. Food was delicious! Very fresh and homemade flavors. Heard that this place had good brunch so my hubby and I tried it on Sunday morning. Made a reservation for 10am just in case. Arrived 10 mins early and was seated immediately. It was not busy at all. That was promising as we have had to wait on many other Sundays at other restaurants. Ordered coffee as soon as we sat down but had to wait for it for 5 mins then waited another 5 mins for cream and sugar which we requested at time of coffee order. Placed our food order of eggs, bacon, potatoes, and toast. Food was not great. Bacon was undercooked and undercured. Eggs were good at least. Potatoes would have been great if cooked. They were still crunchy! Homemade ketchup and huckleberry jam were yummy but that was all that was really good. No refills on coffee until food was gone. Service was meh too. Gave 2 stars only because it was nice atmosphere sitting outside. read more

Went here on a Sunday night after getting into town to visit for the week. Nice place, we sat outside in the great weather. Our server was nice. My wife is celiac so he told us about the gluten free options. We ended up ordering the Beef Medallions and opted for it being on a bed of veggies rather than the Farro which it came with because that's wheat. But when it came it was on Farro so they apologized and after a bit of a wait brought back what we had ordered. We know it's a challenge sometimes to eat gluten free. Meh. I'd probably steer clear of this place. It's in a hot location, but as far as decent food goes, it's a bit on the weak side. Got the blackened salmon curry. They destroyed the salmon. It was way over cooked. The asparagus was undercooked and the grits tasted like paste. The curry was overwhelming with only the occasional fishiness of the salmon making it through--which wasn't a good thing by any means. With all of the beautiful choices in downtown Boise, Juniper needs to have a reality check. From mediocre food with inflated prices, to lackluster service, I will not be back. Cocktails: We ordered Palomas. They were poured into hot glasses, ice added last. Who does that? The first sip was a mouthful of hot booze. If I'm paying $9 for a cocktail, I expect you take the time to, at least, stir it. Appetizer: I was really excited about the Pork Belly Fries. We waited a really long time for the appetizer. Too long. By the time we got it, we were starving and she told us that our food was also ready and would be coming out. If I order an appetizer, the kitchen should properly time apps and meal. Also, we ordered our appetizer BEFORE we ordered our meal. Like 5 minutes before. Anyway, the fries were overcooked, to the point of being as crispy as potato chips. We did let her know and they offered to make more of them, but our meal was already on the table so we declined. Meal: I ordered the BLT Salad. It's a wedge salad, which is fine. But, the core was still left on and was not edible. Believe it or not, the bacon was flavorless. How is that even a thing? There was a flavorless blue corn grit cake that was mushy and bland as can be. If you aren't going to put salt and pepper on the table, your seasoning better be flawless. I had to ask for salt. Overall, it was just a shitty salad that I could have done better at home. Didn't finish. My friend ordered the double r ranch bacon cheeseburger with a side salad. Side salad was just dressed greens. I get it. It's supposed to be minimal. Everything else better shine. The burger, was a mediocre burger, not seasoned, with an excess of over flavoring from the spicy mayo. Super greasy, with a puddle of grease left on the plate. Service: Slow. Waters were never filled. We were never asked if we wanted another cocktail. Not that we would've, but that's not the point. To be fair, they did remove the fries. But, $50 for a meal that Sucked, with service that matched, we will not be back. Not with places like the consistently amazing Wild Root across the street. Get your shit together, Juniper. I wanted to like this restaurant. I first came here two years ago with an old high school friend who I hadn't seen in 10 years on a short vacation to Boise. I ordered the veggie burger and it was great. I recently moved back to Boise and I ate at Juniper again because it had vegetarian options. The ordered the cauliflower dish and it was very oily, basically drenched in oil and the bottom of the dish was like a soup of oil. I asked the waitress to let the cooks know but she didn't. Then I came another time with my partner and ordered brussel sprouts, which were soggy, and I ordered the cauliflower again and asked for easy on the oil (the flavors were good the first time so I thought I'd enjoy it if it wasn't so oily.)... sure enough they gave me another super oily dish with puddles of olive oil. We mentioned to the waitress the brussel sprouts weren't edible, she took it off our bill, and my boyfriend ended up eating just French fries for his dinner. Overall, soggy oily vegetables. i can't say one bad thing about my experience here. came in for brunch on a saturday during the farmers market- no wait. the server was kind and attentive, the food was fantastic, the restaurant was clean and beautiful, the menu was thoughtful and interesting- not to mention well priced- i just can't think of one thing to complain about. this is why they are getting 5 stars from me. i had the "blt salad" which was sooo good. pork belly, sweet marinated roasted tomatoes, poached egg, home made crispy onions, butter lettuce, and a yummy white cheddar dressing. i just didn't want it to end it was that good. my mom had the chicken biscuit with sausage gravy, thick yummy bacon, so much delicious in one plate. i snuck a few bites! overall i so look forward to coming back here again and again, to check out everything this place has to offer because it's phenomenal. read more

I don't know why people are all excited about this joint but after my visit tonight, I won't be back. We ordered the pretzel strips and garlic fries for our meal. Though the pretzel strips were pretty good, the garlic fries were awful. The only way to describe the garlic fries was they tasted like burnt popcorn. You know, you can't get the taste out of your mouth no matter how much beer you drink??? Yeah, that gross. Something was said to the server about the garlic fries being burnt and awful and her response was, "Well, you ate half of them. Couldn't have been that bad."
