I was really disappointed with my experience at this golf course. It was an extremely hot, sunny day, and staying hydrated should have been a priority. Unfortunately, the beverage cart service was terrible. When the drink cart finally reached our area, the attendant had already run out of beverages before getting to our group. She told us she was going to refill and come back, but she never returned for the rest of our round. As a result, I only had one beverage the entire day despite trying to get more multiple times. On a hot day, this isn't just an inconvenience--it's a health and safety issue. Better planning and more reliable beverage cart service are needed. I enjoy golfing, but this experience really took away from the day, and I'll think twice before coming back. read more

Great public course, but the management left a lot to be desired. My boyfriend and I bought a full round. We were having such a great time that we wanted to go for another 9 holes and were more than willing to pay for it. Unfortunately, we were turned away by the pro shop, who said the course needed to "air out." If that was the plan, why not just close the course entirely to begin with? It was 5:30PM on a Saturday afternoon and bright as day. Turning away paying customers without a clear reason makes it feel like they just wanted to wrap up early. Upon parking the assistant manager stared us down. We weren't even out of the vehicle as he said "what are you doing?". No hello, no smile. We said... parking for golf. He proceeded to point out it was a handicap parking. We said yes... we have a handicap tag. He unbelievably then asked if we were handicap! I believe that is illegal! We explained we were parking it for someone who was already on the course who is handicapped. He proceeded to just say "oh" and leave. Played the Riverside course today. First time back in 2 years. Major improvements to fairways and greens. Looks like management is spending the money and hiring people who know what they are doing. We come up from Florida for a month or two where we live on a very well maintained golf course. I could be very happy playing Juniper Hills on a steady basis. I have also found the staff from the pro shop to the starters to be very helpful and friendly. Kudos all around. And for seniors, a great bargain. read more

Only because it wouldn't allow me to select zero stars. I witnessed one of the most ridiculous customer service experiences I've ever seen there last month. Dudley (owner) is trying to integrate his son Matt into the business. i would rate Matt's customer service ability as Neanderthal. At the conclusion of a league Play Day, a league that has been at their course for well over 50 years, I witnessed Matt physically shove someone who had the nerve to ask for a couple extra steak tips in the buffet line. I couldn't even imagine how much money this league has paid them over the years. Dudley witnessed the whole thing and his solution was to notify the league they are no longer welcomed. Do yourself a favor and play a course where customers are valued. Maybe Matt can learn how to mow grass. read more

I had booked a 4some to play on a Friday afternoon October 25. Course had some players but was far from packed. 3 of us showed up and paid our greens fees and for our carts. Our 4th called us and told us he had a last minute family issue and wouldn't be able to make it. We were on the putting green waiting for our turn to tee off when I was approached by someone from the pro shop. He informed me he would be charging my credit card 25$ for a missed tee time fee. I informed him I've been playing here regularly for 20 years and I have never had one of our group not show up. He said they are losing too much money because people are booking for 4 and only show up with 3. I said well I have never done that before and it wouldn't happen again. He asked me what I do for a living, I told him I own a sign shop. He said well if someone ordered 4 signs and showed up but only wanted 3 what would I do. I said I'll tell you what i wouldn't do. I wouldn't burn a 20 year customer for 25$. He said well you run your business and I'll run mine. I informed him if he charges my card 25$ it will ultimately cost them 1000's of dollars because I'll never come back and I'll inform my friends to do the same. He said well do what you gotta do. They already lost money. My friends and I were planning on having lunch and a couple beers after the round. Probably 100$ or so they didn't get. They will lose out on 1000's all for 25$. I hope it was worth the ego boost you received by taking my 25$. He wasn't just a counter guy , he informed me he was the manager. The ownership should definitely look into they have making these types of decisions for their course. Obviously not a very sharp business person. It's honestly not the 25$ it's the complete lack of appreciation for the business I have given them over the past 20 years read more

This place is a DIRT track at this point, at least the Lake Side course is. I don't think I've ever played a course in worse shape. The greens are GONE and the fairways aren't much better. They have a lot of nerve charging $65 to play THAT.... read more

Played a fantastic round this past Sunday (7/3) morning on Lakeside (fantastic for me because I fired up a 78). I can say with all honesty that the course is back to its original greatness. I actually booked the tee time from seeing other current Yelp reviews. I was speaking with the ranger prior to playing, and he relayed that they got a new heads groundskeeper. Well kudos to both him and his staff. Both the fairways and greens were really lush, albeit a touch slow for my liking, but really good, nonetheless. The new tee boxes, especially on the par 3 hole #8 are going to look awesome when they're fully grown. All of us were most pleasantly surprised with how lush the course was, and as a budget conscious golfer their greens fees are more than reasonable compared to other courses in the area. I also like the fact that the guys in the pro shop appreciate your business and act as if they're happy you chose to play their track. So, feel free as we did to add them back to your course rotation, actually scratch that. With reviews like mine and a few others like it, it's going to get tougher to get that Sunday mid-morning tee time... read more

I'm a beginner golfer. I would consider myself new to playing the game. I played a little in high school. Only courses in Mass. I find this course to be nicer then the few that I have been to. Lots of wild life. Some beautiful holes. Very quiet and relaxing environment. I never feel rushed. The staff is super nice. It's wonderful when staff treats you with respect even if you're not a member. The other courses should take some notes. This is how you gain members!!! Hahaha!!! Love the game. Really like the course. And looks like they are working hard to improve some of the holes. Can't wait to keep playing here. read more

Greens and fairways are in good shape. The carts are gas powered and loud but they work fine. The smart cart girl came around twice to get tips which helped her with her medical school training. Food was excellent for the price. Water and trees make the course interesting and fun. read more

Played 9 at Riverside yesterday. The greens are in the best shape in years due to all the rain, but the tee boxes are surprisingly ripped up. Can't you move the teeing area around a little? And number 9 is a disgrace. Every year 9 is underwater and this year is even worse. After all these years, how about a little engineering project to drain the fairway a little better? The tee box has been moved down across from #8 green, so it's an approx 180 yard par 3, and the entire fairway was a swamp. No one in the clubhouse even mentioned it and there's no distance sign at the temporary tee. C'mon, Juniper - for $98 (2 people for 9 holes, plus cart), a little heads-up on the conditions and maybe even a break in price could be in order. That's a pretty expensive 8.5 holes...... read more

Both Courses in the past were degrading, poor maintenance....no longer. The past 3 years has been constant improvements. Courses are in excellent shape. Greens are clean and getting faster. (Little slow still) this year is the best conditions I've ever seen there in the 10 years I've been going. Great work read more

Since I have to give one star, I'll give it to the pleasant Pro Shop staff. From there, everything goes down hill. I understand that Covid brings challenges when running a business, but that can't be the excuse for dreadful tee boxes, fairways, and greens. The Lakeside course was in terrible shape end to end. There's no drinking water out on the course; when asked about it, the staff member mumbled something about not yet knowing how to "...tackle this challenge since Covid..". Again, I get that there are challenges, but the hits keep coming. We hadn't seen the beverage cart since the third hole, and we were finishing the 15th. When we saw the cart and waved it over, the girl told us she couldn't serve us because "there weren't enough holes left for us to play and be guaranteed our drinks would be finished by the end of the round". That's 3 holes, 4 fifty-somethings, 1 beer each. Interesting... Dreadful course conditions, poor amenities, questionable "rules". You do the math. Oh - Joe the Bartender after the round was great - helped remove some of the bad taste. Enjoy your round! read more

This review is long overdue. Thank you,thank you thank you, to the event coordinator Rita and her staff for the wonderful experience we had for my daughters bridal shower which was held in September in their lovely and very large outdoor pavilion. Starting with my very first phone conversation back in March I always felted welcomed no matter how many times I called with questions and even the day of the event with my requests. This was the perfect venue/setting, especially during this crazy pandemic and not wanting to hold an event inside. The surrounding were beautiful, the wait staff was very accommodating and the buffet brunch was yummy with a large selection of food choices. Our daughter was so happy and thrilled to finally be celebrating ( a year later) traditional wedding events that lead up to the big day. Thank you again!!!! read more

Terrible experience today. I went out to play 18 and asked for 18. I played the front 9 of Riverside and hole 8 & 9 were both a swamp the entire hole. 9 they have you tee off in the middle of the fairway it's so bad. Then when I went to play 10 they stopped me and would let me finish like I was trying to steal the back 9. I specifically asked to play 18 and the clubhouse only set me up for 9 apparently and stopping in the middle ruined my round. Terrible service for a subpar course. read more

Both courses are usually in decent shape with albeit slower greens. Pace of play typically runs under 4.5 hours. So good so far, right? Customer service is severely lacking to the point where you should seriously consider playing another course. Again, another problem with an over aggressive ranger (see other reviews - you can't make this up). On the 17th hole on lakeside, we hit irons off the tee about 200 yds out. The ranger proceeds to wave the group behind us up, when we are clearly in range. We questioned what he was doing. He proceeded to take this as an insult and followed us the final two holes within 20yds of the cart (rather than do his job). It was quite strange, and killed what was an enjoyable round. I'm not sure why he felt the need to be right up our cart since we were right behind the group in front. Quite strange and when I questioned him on the 18th, he wanted to throw us off the course. Again, see other reviews. Ranger issues here can kill what should be an enjoyable round. read more

Lovely place, upscale feel around the course as far as landscaping. Overall good layout. Downsides are somewhat gruff service, crowded play, and extremely soft almost unplayable greens. The greens aren't in bad shape (they look quite healthy) but are frustratingly soft and almost fairway-length in cut. read more

Brand new golf carts, great conditions [fairways nice and plush, rough only 1.5", fantastic greens (tad faster would be awesome) - beautiful scenery, great design and real friendly personnel. Great Public golf! 2 courses and the property makes you feel likes its private. Entire Staff has always been great. Truly enjoy the River Course. The Lake Course is too tight for me. 13th on the Lake Course is the most impossible par 4.... Unless your hit a bomb off the tee. Worth a trip. read more

I have been golfing at Juniper Hills for the last 8 years. The course has never looked better than this year, especially the greens. Compliments to the new greenskeeper and his crew. The water problems on 8 & 9 on Riverside have finally been addressed and solved. The entire staff have always been friendly and attentive which makes the experience even better. Played on 8/15, what a waste of money. Greens lost completely, they spray the dirt green so it looks better. They don't have anything on website about the deplorable conditions or temporary greens. Will never play there again. read more

I have played Juniper for many years and they did indeed lose quite a few greens this summer. So I can't argue with some of the earlier reviews. However, our regular foursome played October 11th, after taking a month off due to the conditions, and the greens were much better. We plan on playing again this week. So if you are looking for a place to play and are willing to put up with a few rough spots, I think you should give it a try. read more

I'd give it zero if I could.Was told when I called for a tee time they were giving a discount because " A Few" greens had root issues. Told me they're were just a few but they were playable! NOT! Juniper Hill has always been two nice courses, Lake and River. The greens and over all conditions are in good shape. They had a couple tough years with the greens but have continued to make improvements. If you haven't played the course recently it is worth checking out. read more

I wanted to share a terrible experience that I encountered at Juniper Hill Golf School in Northborough. I signed up my 10-year-old son with his friend to take the 5-week lessons provided by Shrewsbury Parks and Rec. My son has been diagnosed with ADHD and doing pretty well without medications. He still, at times, acts impulsively and is a 10-year-old boy. For 5 weeks I dropped off my son and picked him up one hour later at the end of class. Always waved to the instructor, but that was futile as they hardly made eye contact during the pick up time. On the final class, I decided to stay and watch the class to see what my son has learned. For starters, he learned that rolling down the grassy hill was pretty fun. I watched him and the others take turns with their lessons, which for a child with ADHD, 19 children and 1 instructor is trying. There was another adult there, but he did not provide instruction, so I wasn't sure the point of the extra body. I was appalled when my son ran past me, crying that he had to leave. I was actually confused as to why. He said that the instructor, Marvin Cruise, made him leave because he and his friend were throwing grass at one another while the other children were having their turn at driving the balls. I took my son by the hand and started to approach Marvin, who then SCREAMED and pointed at my son, "He is OUTTA here!". I was actually taken back by his demeanor and hostility and do not feel he belongs anywhere around children, especially one that allows them to be dropped off in his care. However, I was at this class and to watch this treatment, when the only reason he was asked to leave was for rolling in the grass is completely unacceptable. When I asked why my son couldn't stay, he, again, pointed right into my child's face and yelled. "He don't listen, he don't listen every week". This stopped lessons entirely while he continued to humiliate both me and my son, for which we paid a hefty sum for this treatment. I asked why he never mentioned this at pickup and he answered with "you're here, you see". I didn't see anything to warrant this humiliation. I told him that there was no way that I could help my son with these classes if I was unaware there was even a problem. The way this man yelled and pointed his finger so close to my child, he was practically touching his face will haunt me for a long time. Furthermore, I had to ask Marvin FOUR TIMES what his name was and the only reason he finally gave it was because he knew I was not leaving without it. I called Juniper Hills the next day to file a complaint and was appalled that the manager, Ken Strong was not in the least concerned that his staff could treat a child with such malice. I expressed my feelings repeatedly and he didn't as much offer an apology. In fact, he felt that I was out of line for addressing the instructor.... While my son was on tears... I acted as any parent would watching her child mistreated. I was at my wits end. Ken was also appalled as to why my son and his friend would even think to roll in the grass. I n fact, he said "What would ever possess the boys to do that?" Seriously? Clearly he does not have young children, and especially one with ADHD. But with his response, you'd think my child just took out open fire. I don't know what or whom he was expecting to enroll in his classes when he opened it to Parks and Rec, but clearly he is looking for children that only have a certain mold. I had to share this story with anyone I knew because I'm sure I am not the only one out there with a boy that likes to roll in grass. If you are looking for quality golf instruction with someone of moral values, I'd steer clear of Juniper and far away from Marvin. Thank You read more

I would have to say disappointing describes Juniper Hills. Conditions on the River course were ok, but there were far too many areas under repair on holes 8-9, and other areas on the golf course. The course seemed a bit rough and not in great condition. What really ruined the experience for us was the ranger saying we were too slow and 2 idiots behind us wanted to play thru. These clowns actually called the pro shop to complain. What ever happened to the days of asking to play thru on a par 3? We would have said "no problem". The ranger had NO business getting involved in my opinion. The speed obsessed hackers actually hit balls into us, and had we not been playing with teenage boys, I would have said something to them. I guess it's worth it to give Juniper another try and I'll come back to update my review if there are improvements. read more

When it comes to golf, I often ain't got game. That's why I stick to public courses. But public courses don't have the beer cart driving around like Juniper Hill and other courses do. Juniper Hill has two courses: Riverside and Lakeside; the latter was very well maintained and green. And unlike public courses, there's no goose guano. For 18 holes and a cart, it was about $60, which for four hours of play, isn't too exorbitant. I would argue that some of the par-4 holes were more like par 6, but as I said, my game kind of sucks. It was a bit of a pain in the ass for me to get home from there--I took a couple of wrong turns in the dark--so bring your GPS if you go. read more

It's one of the better public facilities in the area. Two tracks, not too long, greens and fairways pretty well kept. Lakeside is narrow, but most of the narrow holes seem to slant back to the fairways there are 2holes on the back that are a little much a 230 yd par 3 over swamp, and a 600 yd par 5. (from the tips). Otherwise the place is fun, though not too challenging. Pretty good pro shop, driving range is half mile away, large practice green. Nice staff decent pub fare. read more

Those people think they own the road that they're on. They make me stop so a never ending stream of golf carts can cross the road. I called the police, and apparently they were told that they do not own the road, and traffic comes first. Too many people don't think. read more

Juniper has 2 courses - Lakeside and Riverside. There both medioker golf courses but good value for the quality and very popular courses. Lakeside is a better golf course than Riverside. Riverside tends to have a few holes that are very wet and your ball will plug on the fairway in August on the 8th or 9th!!! Staff are great here from the guys in the office to the starter and the people behind the bar - they are all so friendly. Food is good for a golf course - pub grub. Beer is cheap too. read more

I only played the lakeside course here, but it was maintained very well. The clubhouse people were very nice, the pace of play was good we didn't ever have to wait to tee off for any hole. It wasn't the most interesting layout from what I remember, but from what I was told by the attendant the riverside course offered more of a challenge, but had a wait that day so we just got out to play as fast as we could. All in all it was a good course, good value, not especially noteworthy but definitely well kept. One quirky thing you'll notice is the dozens of cart signs on each fairway directing you, from a distance it looked like a bunch of seagulls sitting out there... kind of odd. Either way, give it a go, worth the drive there and a better value than most courses in the area. read more

You should probably leave the putter in the car. Most of the greens were dead or had crab grass on them. Fairways were an inch long and the rough doesn't look like it has been cut in a week. I am not confident that they have weedwackers in the maintenance shop as most grass around benches, etc. was over a foot tall. For a Sunday charging $75 for 18 holes is a rip-off. Many better courses around for less money. Not playing here again. read more
