Ranking my food from favorite to least favorite: 1. Fried Chicken 2. Biscuits 3. Apple Butter (Better then the Covington Beef House in Indiana - iykyk 4. Brownie Pudding, or something like that? 5. Chicken gravy. And I'm not a gravy connoisseur. 6. Okra Casserole - I've never tried anything like this and I enjoyed it. It was less casserole and more mixed veggie. 7. Riced potatoes 8. Coleslaw It was something good to experience once. I think it's good for people who rarely get a home cooked meal. The etiquette is to wait on the porch and a server will come to the door at some point. The lighting seemed off but maybe that was me. It's like a house with a couple of dining tables in each room. I work at the Colorado Springs airport and have many an opportunity to recommend places to go, things to do and places to eat. Juniper Valley will be last on my list. My husband came to Colorado and he wanted a unique place to eat so I suggested Juniper Valley. Their website at the top says reservations are highly recommended but they do take walk in's. At the very bottom of their website it says reservations required. We were going right at 5pm when they open and since I did not know when his flight would arrive I did not make a reservation. When we walked in we noticed over 8 empty tables but before we could get any farther the kid at the door said he would not be able to accommodate us. He would not even allow us to see if anyone had cancelled or maybe no showed as we were willing to wait. He just kept ushering us out the door saying reservations were required. So we went back to our car and used the phone to call for reservations. The girl that answered was very pleasant and said they had plenty of space that day when would we like. We made the reservations for 530pm and proceeded back inside. This kid was not going to let us have a table and he did not care what the girl on the phone had said. Over 8 tables were still empty and the place is small and intimate so I was not about to match the scene he was making. We decided to go on into Canon City and we spent a lot of money elsewhere. After telling friends at work I was not surprised to hear others saying the food was mediocre and the place was not worth the hassle. read more

There is no denying that this place is gorgeous, and the food is really great! But while these were on point, the service was quite surly. Maybe that's part of the ambiance? It didn't quite fit the vibe, in my opinion. If I lived locally, I would be back with groups of out of towners looking for an experience. The food was just okay at best, very bland and lacking any real flavor or seasoning. I wouldn't normally leave a harsh review for that alone, but unfortunately the experience got much worse after. Within hours of eating here, I became extremely sick and ended up dealing with it for multiple days. It was genuinely miserable and completely ruined my week. This place used to be a family favorite but times have certainly changed! When we first came here it was very pleasant experience with the staff and the food was amazing. This last time we came to visit for a family birthday, there was a party of six of us and the waiter was nice and accommodating like always but then this other lady appeared out of no where and started handling our table and she never introduced herself and didn't have a name tag but she did have a striped shirt which was is definitely a different attire from the other servers(needless to say very unprofessional from her part) I don't know if she was a manager but she was very rude it almost felt very targeted towards because she was very happy to talk to the people behind us and very loudly I might but almost annoyed with us! The food was good like always but when she asked us if we wanted any refills we said yes and she even ASKED us how much more chicken we wanted and we said 5 more pieces and she said "she could only do 3 pieces" when she brought the refills there only 2 pieces and the potatoes looked as if she grabbed someone else plate to our table! I am very disappointed with the services and sad to see that this place could hire such an unprofessional person when the place itself is very cozy and delicious! This is a secret spot! Who would imagine that this restaurant has been around for over 70 years! The recipes and philosophy are the same too, feed good folks great food with a smile and they will return. Again and again! I have visited Colorado 4 times in less than two years and have enjoyed a family meal there every time. I LOVE the charming setting of this place! It is rustic and quaint in the best possible way. The menu is small but well-executed. The fried chicken and Nashville hot chicken are both tasty and juicy and the skin is flavorful. The cole slaw and the biscuits were some of my favorite items. This place was a terrific stop while in CO Springs. This is a quaint and homey restaurant with amazing ambiance and rich homage to their past. The food was over the top incredible and felt like a home cooked meal in the south. You pick an appetizer (tart cherry juice or curry consume) then an entree (Sunday nightly special: Nashville hot chicken, traditional fried chicken, baked ham). Then it came with an array of sides generously portioned for the number of people in your party. We especially enjoyed the apple butter and bought a jar of it in the gift shop. For dessert we had peach cobbler served with ice cream, bread pudding, and cowboy coffee. The bread pudding had great flavor however, it was served chilled which was unexpected. Located on 115. Approximately 10 to 15 minutes from Fort Carson. The restaurant was recommended to me by a friend. I heard they had good fried chicken and it was family style so I knew I had to check it. You can have as many sides as you want just like being at Grandma's house. The meal was approximately $22 each which includes cherry drink or chicken consume, coleslaw, biscuits, butter, apple butter, okra casserole, rice/potatoes and gravy. The meal does come with dessert. The options are a variety of ice cream or ice cream sundae. The vanilla ice cream didn't have much flavor to it. You can select a slice of homemade pie which is an up charge which we were told there was a small up charge fee but if we have known the up charge fee was $6.00 per slice honestly we probably would have passed because it adds up when you order a few slices for the table. Recommend letting people know the amount of the up charge fee is so they don't have a heart attack when seeing $18 for 3 slices of pie when dessert is included in the price of the meal. On Sunday they offer hot fried chicken which I loved the amount of spice on the chicken. The fried chicken was also good. Wasn't a fan of the rice/potatoes. Didn't have much flavor plus I think it was a texture thing for us. I didn't care much for the chicken consume. It didn't have much flavor to it and I didn't taste any curry in it. The cherry drink reminded me of a diluted Hawaiian Punch more than a cherry cider. I heard a another table said to them it tasted like kool aid. Really enjoyed the apple butter, hot chicken, sawmill gravy and okra casserole which had a little kick to it. The service was very good. We didn't feel rushed and we could take our time and enjoy our meal which was really nice and relaxing. We made reservations and we were told if you come here make reservations. What an amazing experience. If you love fried chicken chicken, this is the place to eat in Colorado! Their fried chicken is amazing. They include all the sides and a desert in the price, along with an appetizer. So worth it! For the appetizer I chose the apple cider. Main entree either ham or fried chicken. I tried the hot chicken and my husband had their regular fried chicken and we shared...both wonderful I couldn't decide which I loved the best! The sides include biscuits, gravy, okra casserole, cole slaw, apple butter and potato rice. They had bread pudding for dessert which was included with our meal. My husband had the toasted coconut pie desert which was extra but it was worth it, so delicious and light and not overly sweet. Juniper Ranch has been on my 'to-do' list since moving to Colorado Springs and almost four years and one health pandemic later, I did it! And I'm sorry it took me this long. They are very family oriented having been in business for 69 years without changing and of their recipes.. not once! And it shows. For starters, make a reservation. Especially post COVID. You don't need to wear a mask but the staff is required. It's a family style concept as their menu is not your everyday dining experience but unique to say the very least. Be sure to tell your server it's your first visit and they'd be happy to explain everything you need to know about Juniper. I experienced it first hand and can say they were thrilled to hear it was our first visit. They serve fried chicken and/or baked ham which is a good place to start. From there all sides are included. It gets better.. they'll refill your chicken plate at no charge!! They're fried chicken is why we came and why we will be back. Must order. They also have a hot chicken special on Thursday and Sunday as well as chicken fried steak special on Fridays for those planning ahead. Oh and don't forget the complimentary desert. I cannot write this review without complimenting the staff from start to finish; from greeting us pleasantly all while wearing those uncomfortable masks, explaining the menu thoroughly, refilling our chicken, and the overall welcome we felt. The charm of the setting does not compensate for the immensely bland food. To call this Southern food is an affront to Southern cuisine. Each dish is the worst version you'll ever taste of that dish, so it's a good thing that the menu is so limited. You'll have mashed potatoes served like they were pushed out of a play dough spaghetti maker, and you have no confidence that they didn't use the actual children's toy. There's nothing cute about mashed potatoes made into spaghetti-like strings, and they somehow managed to taste watery. Your appetizer choices are either instant ramen chicken seasoning water with 2 cheez its or kool-aid sold as cherry cider also with 2 cheez its. The Nashville hot chicken wasn't spicy at all but was extra greasy and devoid of seasoning. It's frankly incredible that one can make fried chicken with such little flavor. Each dish was astonishingly tasteless. Everything is handcrafted, house-made without salt and with no mind to the flavor profile. The gravy needed salt, but it's the most flavorful side you'll encounter. You should salt it up then cover everything else in it because you're not getting flavor anywhere else. There's apple butter. There are biscuits served. That's all. I don't even want to talk about the bread pudding... my New Orleanian mother would be mortified. Go to Cracker Barrel instead. This place is playing a joke on you, and I'm convinced the other 5-star reviewers are in on it too. The family that lives in the "slightly renovated" chicken coop is definitely laughing all the way to the bank, but frankly, i hope they've made enough making customers look a fool to buy a real home. First off, my grandma's home cooking was always a 10, so any "home style" cooking is compared to hers. This is a quaint little adobe house, turned restaurant. Each room is set up for dining. Little pan with biscuits, four pieces of chicken, riced potatoes with gravy, cold slaw, and my favorite "okra" casserole. (more like thick soup - great flavor for okra) The biscuits came with "apple butter" - yum! Cherry cider for an appetizer - good - but too sweet for my taste. The Chicken was good, but not as good as grandma's! The potatoes were too starchy and the gravy too thick! Needed more salt! A couple I met on a hike told me about this place- it sounded very interesting. Out in the boonies, open on weekends only, just option of fried chicken or ham... I decided I had to go! They fill up reservations fast - book ahead. And phone GPS doesn't work so well- I got lost twice! Leave early! It's s beautiful drive though, and you pass interesting places. Super crispy and nice size half chicken - 4 pieces Chicken is moist- but I found coating bland tasting and a little TOO crispy ( is there such a thing?) it was just kind of- flavorless. But moist! The Okra casserole was not my kind of thing. I also found out that while I love potatoes, I do NOT like them "riced". I didn't even realize they were potatoes until I read the brochure after- I had no clue WHAT that was. Cole slaw was fine- about like anywhere. The gravy was yummy! Home made and I loved it. My review is based off of take-out, not a dine-in experience. We had heard so much of this family style restaurant and decided to give it a try post 15mile hike. Their sign off of 115 is rather short so be prepared to take that quick turn into the ranch! My husband and I ordered one Nashville and one Regular. We were pleased with the farm-fresh food we took to go to eat at home. The fried chicken was flavorful, however, neither of us were happy about the gravy. My grandma's from the south and it just didn't taste like that. We both liked the apple butter and the random, uniqueness to the curry consume. The lady over the phone was super kind answering all of my questions and I would give the restaurant another try via dining in.
