Really enjoyed the whole experience of this place (while visiting in August). Just walking down the stairs into the restaurant, i.e., "Rabbit Hole" set and increased my anticipation. What a fun idea! The ambiance is kind of both chill and yet lively depending on where you're sitting (bar or restaurant). The Alice-in-Wonderland decor, dim lighting and funky eye-opening paintings made it super fun. Our server was very attentive and our meal delicious. The goat cheese balls were a nice appetizer as was the herb crusted baked salmon and the chicken cordon bleu. I wouldn't sleep on their iteration of a "moon pie" either. It is an absolute MUST have! What is beyond WILD and now a bit hilarious is that I was so busy soaking it all in visually that I somehow missed the part about the building being a former morgue. I didn't learn that little fact until half way through my meal. What an awesome concept for a highly enjoyable evening! We entered The Rabbit Hole through a mysterious subway entrance protruding from the downtown sidewalk. It was so delightful to encounter such an enchanting subterranean bar and adjoining rooms and hideaway booths all embracing a whimsical Alice in Wonderland theme. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were busy but impressively friendly and attentive. The food coming out of the amazingly small but organized kitchen looked so impressive - definitely something we would try next time! Not a huge deal, but it's a little cruddy sitting there thinking "I'm pretty sure that's ours" and waiting. The ambiance is very dark, with a lot of stairs up and down -- you head into sort of a basement-type area. Everything I saw was clean and nice. It's a cool, funky spot to take a date or hit for happy hour, so the vibe and ambiance are definitely spot on for that. Signature cocktails -- all fine. Not the best thing ever, but solid. I'd have them again. Side salad -- good. The ranch is made in house and very flavorful, and the salad was actually loaded with veggies. French fries with garlic aioli -- a bit of a letdown. We didn't even finish them. They came out okay, just a little dry, and the aioli itself wasn't very good -- we didn't really like it. I recently visited this restaurant and had an experience that I felt only warranted 3 stars, as it ultimately felt like a bit of a tourist trap. I have to admit that the ambience is really cool; you walk down into a basement to enter the restaurant, which used to be the city morgue, and while that's a little bit creepy, it gives the space a dark, velvety vibe that I think some people would really like. However, for a higher-end establishment, I found the service to be kind of spotty and not quite up to par. My biggest disappointment was the food, as we ordered two entrées to share and found both to be rather disappointing and honestly kind of bad, which was especially frustrating given how expensive they were. Coming from a place that had some of the best food in the world to Colorado has been quite the adjustment. I haven't been to a restaurant yet that I would say is absolutely fabulous here. That being said the food here was OK but the atmosphere left a lot to be desired. It was so noisy I couldn't hear my dining partner. If you have claustrophobia you might not like dining here as you feel like you're in somebody's basement with no windows. It certainly isn't the kind of place that you would take someone to pop the question. I had the lamb but it had so much brown sauce on it that I really couldn't taste anything other than the sauce. My dining partner had the steak which he enjoyed thoroughly. It was also slathered in brown gravy. Who the hell puts gravy on a good cut of steak? It's very expensive for mediocre food. And one more thing: I really hate when restaurants pile all the food on top of each other. I don't want my meat on top of my potatoes on top of my vegetable. The only reason I gave it two stars was because our server was very pleasant and my dining partner loved his marshmallow vodka drink. read more

SERVICE: Our waitstaffer was friendly, helpful, and showed up as often as we expected. The place draws a lot of patrons, even on weekdays, so reservations are highly recommended. We managed to get seated as walk-ins, but it was a bit iffy and it was at 4:30pm on a Tuesday. They are also strict on how long parties of a given size are allowed to hog a table. That makes sense for the number of diners, but still felt a bit off-putting (though the duration given for a party of 2, 90 minutes, was comfortable). AMBIANCE: That's why you're here of course, and from the sidewalk stairs leading down to the plethora of Alice-in-Wonderland artwork on the black walls, the atmosphere is thick and delightful. It's more comforting and hearty than fancy or experimental, which honestly hit the spot. The portion sizes are HUGE, you absolutely get your money's worth. You won't leave hungry. I will say that the concept is kind of cool, and I do love the vibe that he gives for Alice in Wonderland, but I was disappointed in the food. The service was decent, but they could train their servers to be a little better with tourist. The server we had was not very talkative and short in conversation. Pretty good as for the food, we had both a grilled fillet and the braised bison short ribs with little to no good things to say. I will say that the grilled fillet did have good flavor, but the potatoes and plate were very cold when the food came out. I don't like my food piping hot, but I would definitely love the potatoes and actual hot food was hot. I've been here a few times - I don't know why it's taken me this long to review this place, Ambience: if I could give 10 stars, I would. The entrance is the coolest entrance ever. Tonight, for the first time, I visited the Rabbit Hole. The goal was to see if one could craft a usable, viable dinner out of the appetizer spare ribs for $15 and the side chopped salad for $9. Worded another way, can a person assemble a reasonable and tasty dinner de facto for less than $30 at one of the city's better restaurants? The answer: yes. While service at the bar tables was lackluster, at best, the whiskey sticky ribs themselves were worthwhile. The style is a profoundly sweet, "wet" ilk, sometimes referred to as "Memphis style." But with the nice, charred patina, they work well. There's a reasonable amount of meat present. I didn't detect an undue amount of fat or gristle, even on the ends. They sit on a bed of cabbage. The chopped salad? Outstanding. But the question emerges: why would you dedicate such time and resources to a salad but provide .39 salad dressing? It makes little sense. What's disappointing? As alluded to above, the Blue Cheese dressing for the salad was of an indescribably cheap, "Hometown Buffet" grade, probably mayonnaise / soy based. I literally couldn't find even one piece of Blue Cheese in traversing the entire decanter with my fork. For a restaurant occupying this high of a station, yes, even in Colorado Springs? This should be a homemade variety with ample chunks of real cheese. As a worthy aside: I hit a nouveau French bistro in Englewood last week whose owner, hailing from Lyon, literally places gigantic pieces of solid French Roquefort in the burger for a small up charge. I was spoiled by them as I came here expecting something maybe remotely similar. Such proved woefully absent. The ribs should either sit atop a bed of ***rice*** with cabbage, or for a small extra fee, should be adorned with mashed potatoes. That would complete them as a meal item, regardless of whether one orders the appetizer ribs or the main course ones. The meat begins to exude redundancy without something meaningful balancing it, both in taste and texture, why rice or mashed potatoes. Finally, bread is an exotic side order with a separate charge levied for such. I didn't order it, as, again, at a fine dining venue--sorry, but I believe that I'm right here--not only should bread be complimentary, but you can judge a restaurant's culinary prowess by the quality and freshness of its complimentary bread. This unwritten rule will never fade, regardless of anti carbohydrate-leaning diet fads. The dungeon, basement facility is a little imposing. I didn't smell an overwhelming scent of great food, just historic construction smells. Laughable, but true. As with so many restaurants in Colorado Springs, the place packs tremendous potential, and with a modicum of meager adjustments could be so much greater. I will hopefully return, but in doing so, will bring my own salad dressing and yes, even a French roll with a pad or two of butter. Sorry, no photo of the chopped salad. read more

Went to The Rabbit Hole tonight. The food and drinks were great like always, which is why we keep coming back. Sadly, the service experience this time was very disappointing. We had to ask multiple times just to get drinks, couldn't tell who our actual server was, and every time we needed assistance it felt like an inconvenience. A few times we clearly tried to get help and were ignored. We've visited several times before and never had issues, even with the automatic 20% gratuity added. We've always happily tipped extra because the experience matched the service. This place was awesome! Our service was amazing and everything came out pretty quickly. We tried a few drinks, but the best was the one with the flaming marshmallow. The paintings and Alice in Wonderland theme were really fun. We enjoyed the buffalo short ribs and the chicken Cordon Bleu, but agreed the chicken was better. Next time I'm gonna try the rabbit meatloaf and a few appetizers. This place was so fun and had such great food, it was a perfect dinner to top off the St. Patrick's Day parade downtown. read more

This was a totally cool experience. The restaraunt is entered through a class enclosed entry leading beneath the sidewalk. Its a tad upscale, and fortunately someone made reservations. The wait staff were engaging, attentive, but not imposing. in fact, our server was a new mother and we didn't notice that she disappeared (to feed her baby) because other staff members stepped up to create seemless service. The food was tasty, and the carrott cake s the best i have ever tasted. I'm not a big dessert person, but i'll be back for that. i really did enjoy the underground atmosphere of the restaurant. I parked across the street at the parking garage, amazingly close, and no charge when i stuck my ticket into pay !! read more

This journey down the rabbit hole was a great experience! I had the bison ribs with mashed potatoes and carrots. The meal was cooked to perfection and was just the right portion. When I queried about dessert, my server Gannon recommended the carrot cake. He was spot on as the carrot cake was one of the best I have ever had. Gannon and the rest of the team took great care of me during my visit. I highly recommend The Rabbit Hole.
