We stopped in, excited to find a local option for outdoor gear, but after this experience we'll not be visiting again. All the prices of REI without the friendly service. When we went up to pay we tried to make conversation about rental options and asked about a specific brand for of tent we've been curious about trying. The clerk told us she'd never heard of it and they'd only rent out very basic stuff to people like us because renters just bring back everything broken. So much for looking for other ways to patronize a local business. She then walked away from the counter, but we still hadn't paid, so she came back but just talked down to us about why the tent we were interested in was a terrible idea (even though she had never heard of it). She's "been camping for years" so she'd know better than us-- even though we too grew up camping and I'm pretty sure we are all the same age. It was very condescending and obviously not a great way to get return business. We certainly don't want to buy or rent anything else from someone who thinks so little of their customers. read more

We came here for a lecture and advice for hiking in the Grand Canyon room to rim. It was very informative plenty of merchandise plan on coming back at the end of the month for a follow up lecture and will be purchasing some gear at that time prices comparable to the store and we prefer to support. Also, I did get an email saying that they price match. I'm not sure if that was a one time thing or if that's regularly an option. This is a review for the shop (I have never gone on an outdoor tour with them). I didn't do to much research prior to visiting the shop so I was surprised to see how small it was. Everything was well organized and the staff seemed pretty friendly. I found that prices were only slightly higher than what you would find at a big sporting store. This is a well-deserved, five-star review for an awesome business. In fact, I've been meaning to write about this small, locally owned business since early summer (it's already early next year). I love their larger competitor, REI, too. I discovered this smaller business a bit later, probably because they are unassuming and not instantly recognized as one of the "big boys" in Scottsdale. Sadly, I passed by their business in my humble car several times before finally stopping in (five sad years). Why? Because this place looks like it is for serious, and I mean serious, outdoorsmen. It is! What I failed to see, however, that this place is also for those of us who asprire to be more of an outdoorsman (no, I'm not going there with the -man, -woman-, -it IDs, although that's all cool, too. As much as I love REI, this place is legit for outdoor loving fun! The staff is so personable and helpful when it comes to preparing for the outdoors, whether if it's camping, hiking, or whatever your heart desires. They pride themselves in supporting local businesses. They sell items from State 48 and Not Vodka water bottles (which I had no idea was right here in Arizona)! Originally I came in to pick up a shirt from State 48 that supports saving wildlife, so of course, I had to get it. Little did I know that I'd find a lot of helpful camping gear. I just got back from backpacking Havasupai and I could have found a lot of options here for light weight camping gear that I did not see at REI surprisingly. As far as attire goes, they carry a lot of more stylish clothes that you'd actually wear again and not just for camping but for just being outdoors and hiking as well. I was eyeing some Prana tops and pants I must admit. The footwear I was comparing online for Havasupai, since I knew there'd be a lot of water crossing and playing while exploring the different falls, were all at this shop! All except for Lunas, which I ended up going with, but maybe I just missed that. If you're a first time camper, they can help organize and set up your trip too! They make all your bucket list desires feasible if it seems a bit daunting to plan a trip. They host workshops that inform you how to pack and how to prepare for adventurous trips. They're tucked away in a older strip mall off the 101 and Shea Blvd so without word of mouth or Instagram, they might be missed! I suggest checking this place out for yourself and seeing how awesome this store and staff are! read more

Went in for a quick look around- husband waiting - for a new waist pack for water, phone, tissues and lip balm. 1 is falling apart and the other 1 is really for running and doesn't fit my phone. While I was shown a $90 Osprey model, which I would have to think about, I was next shown one that's meant for dog owners at $40. A family group of 6 people and a last minute addition joined Chad and Patrick for a fantastic 4 day adventure from the North to South Rim of the Canyon. The entire group smiled the entire time and if can hack the weight of the pack this is one great adventure. The guides were great and the weather was also incredible as well. Ribbon Falls, an evening in the Phantom Ranch store having a few Buds and the sunset on the Plateau are things that make life worthwhile. The JRI staff is fantastic and did everything they could to get us ready for the hike, it is not an easy walk by any means, and they really do a good prep job for gear and training. I will use this group again without any hesitation. They rock if you want the Canyon.... read more

I had an absolutely incredible time on the South Kaibab to Bright Angel tour with Just Roughin' It. This was really my first backpacking trip and having a company like Just Rougin' It take care of the entire experience was just a breeze. Their entire program, which included being picked up near a hotel near Scottsdale Airport and driven to the canyon was just perfectly done. I can't say enough great things about tour guide Liz Griffiths, if you go on a tour with Just Roughin' It, you should absolutely ask to see if she's available. The group we had was a blast, with a lot of laughs and an incredible experience from start to finish. The views in the Grand Canyon are just unbelievable. My daughter and I just got back from Havasupai, using JRI Adventure Company. If you plan this trip through this company, please insist that Adam Harward be your guide. Adam has been down that canyon dozens of times and is a backpacking bad ass. He made sure that everyone was well taken care of. His attention to feet care, hydration and nutrition made sure our bodies were able to manage the demanding schedule and experience/enjoy everything. Additionally, Adams knowledge of the secret spots, supai tribe, geology and botany were educational. It seemed that Adam had an interesting story for every area we ventured to. My only wish is that we left the trail head early to escape the heat. Other than that one small issue, this company runs a tight ship. Kudos JRI and Adam Harward!!!!! read more

After much thought, I decided not to elaborate on this hike, hence I will not receive a refund. First may I state I will never return to the Grand Canyon. Such terrible memories. Just finished a rim2rim hike of the Grand Canyon. Booked outfitting and guide service through JRI. Equipment provided (backpack, tent, sleeping bag) was top self. Best of all our guide was amazing! Put up with 5 moderately aged men for our 4 day adventure like a champ. The guide prepared delicious meals, helped with our equipment, shared fun facts and history of the Canyon, and most of all helped me to finish. My husband and I have taken two backpacking trips with Just Roughin It- Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon with Chad and Gregor and one that we just completed in Yosemite- Yosemite Falls to Snow Creek with Ryka. Both were four day, three night camping and hiking trips. We really like this company and they give a discount for repeat customers. It's also nice to travel with guides who are knowledgeable about the area, know the trails and can assist with any issues that arise. The guides were all very friendly and knowledgeable. The company provided almost all of the gear and the food-which is pretty good. The guides showed a lot of concern for the well being of guests including foot care, hydration, and the general fatigue factor. We would definitely travel with them again. read more

We just finished the 4 day South Kaibab/Bright Angel loop at the Grand Canyon. This included side hikes to Ribbon Falls and Plateau Point. While it was one of the most challenging things my fiance and I have ever done, it was an incredible experience. Our guide Ken was incredible. He was patient, motivating, and extremely knowledgeable about the Canyon. He cooked incredible meals that I did not expect for being below the rim in the Canyon. We hiked 33 Miles over 4 days and for two novice east coast hikers, Ken's ability to motivate us through the aches and pains made this an enjoyable experience and a great achievement in our book. I would definitely recommend Just Roughin It to anyone who has hiking and camping the Canyon on their bucket list but is a bit intimidated to do it all on their own. JRI and Ken tended to everything and made the trip a memory that we will have forever. read more

We have prepaid for a kayak rental but twice now when we try to book it, they are closed on the days & times that they list as being open. Instead of just letting us hold onto the kayak an extra couple days until they are open again they said they would charge us for the extra days, even the day they were supposed to be open but are not. We would not be using them on those days because we are only able to go out to the lake for one day. They would just sit in our garage until Just Roughin It tells us they are back so that we cold return them. We shouldn't have to pay for their decision not to be open. It's not like they would lose money by doing so because no one else could rent them when they are closed anyway. Good business practice ensures more business by word of mouth. We have 75 guests coming to town next month, many of who have asked us for recommendations on what to do outdoors. Of course we will recommend places and businesses where we have had good experiences. I cannot comment on their Grand Canyon tours because this review only pertains to their kayak and paddle board rental and their business practice. read more
