Last week I needed some help with my second backpacking trip to Havasupai and met Alec in the store. I was so surprised that he went above and beyond for me and my questions and recommended several good options not only for the hike but for the car camping as well. Since the experience was so great, I texted my friends from out of the state and asked them to use REI at Paradise Valley for their purchases because of a great value and quality. Two stars is generous for a place with a very flawed "100 % Satisfaction guarantee" policy that does not return lightly used child shoes worn once... Seriously, my daughter wore them for 3 hours, put them away and tried them on a month later and they no longer fit.. Did I mention that we are also REI members with the supposed benefit of returns up to a year? Based off this experience, I sincerely doubt that they will honor that as well. My wife really likes the place but I am not a fan of subjective "100% satisfaction guarantee" return policy's.. Best REI I've been to due to all-around excellent customer service. Came here from Mesa to check out the Topo Adventuretrail 2. Alec was very thorough in describing various trail and hiking shoes. I chose the Topos and ordered at the store with Robert and he too was super friendly. Didn't really look around much but noticed that the store is very cramped due to smaller square footage than other REIs. But, I wouldn't hesitate in making this my first choice because of the great feeling shopping here. Can't wait to get my Topos in a few days. So I was on the hunt for some new walking tennis shoes for outside that are zero mm heel to toe drop or neutral and have enough toe room for my toes to spread but I also have a very thin heel, so kinda difficult to find the perfect shoe. However, I'd been reading about the Altra Escalante and saw that this REÍ had them, along with some other brands. I'm so glad that I popped in here as the salesperson was super knowledgeable about what I wanted for my new walking shoe. He found several different brands that might work and I went about trying them on. I narrowed by search down to two when he suggested that I take a few laps around the store! That made all the difference in making my final choice! I did buy the Altra Escalante and they have been working out perfectly! We've loved REI for years but won't be shopping here again. They tout 100% guarantee, but when my husband tried to return an expensive pair of shoes that wore well beyond normal wear and tear, the man at the counter was very rude and refused to take them back, even though we are members and it was less than a year after purchase. I get normal wear and tear but this was extreme and there was no reason for the employee to be snarky and rude, my husband was very polite. REI, you lost some really great customers due to a rude employee. read more

Weird review. Bought my wife a pair of oncloud running shoes last week at the store and the lady that helped us was beyond great This week I called to order a pair of oncloud shoes for me. Guy on the phone wouldn't take my coupon and lied to me that oncloud shoes were not on the store coupon. Hung up called the 800 number and they filled my order in 10 minutes taking the coupon So great help in the store first time lousy help in store second time great help on the phone with 800 number Gave them a 5 for two out of three and 1 star for the guy on phone in the store. I had a good experience shopping there 2x this week. I want to get some of the shoes upstairs but the prices are too high. Even the sleeping bags (returns) are 173 dollars. It's a nicestore, spacious and fun to shop in. The girl working in shoes is really nice so I'll think I'll go back and just buy a new pair in exactly the style of fit I need. I stand on my feet all day at work and my current shoes are worn out so I'm wanting to get some decent Hoka, which they carry a lot of. read more

A few things set REI apart from other outdoorsy stores. One, REI's selection is of outdoor goods. Unlike shopping at a sporting goods store, with limited camping, hiking, and cycling gear, REI specializes in those types of items. This means a much larger selection. Two, their salespeople are outdoor enthusiasts. They are ready to give recommendations based on real-life experiences. Try before you buy. A big benefit of shopping at REI is that many items may be handed before purchasing. One of the areas that this is particularly impressive is the camping pads/sleeping pads. A sample of all of the pads they sell are already inflated. An area is set up for people to actually lay on the pads. Being able to try sleeping pads in the store will help ensure shoppers get the right pad to fit their needs. We were there to look for backpacking backpacks. The backpack we were leaning towards when looking online was not the pack we left with. Trying on several packs and being able to make side by side comparisons made a huge difference. Employees are helpful. This is one store it is easy to find help in. They are also respectful when assistance is not required. For a fee, shoppers may become a REI Co-op Member. Took advantage of REI's anniversary sale today! Never been inside of this one before. Located right in Paradise Valley adjacent to Target. Lots of ample parking, but holy moly... ton of people taking advantage of the sale which is to be expected. I ordered a couple of Yakima roof rack accessories and scored 20% off one regular priced item. Ordered it online. Got my email confirmation. Headed to the store to get my order. Pull up the email on my phone and click the link to indicate I am officially at the store for my goods! A few moments later, a nice man showed up with a paper bag and all my Yakima gear. Only took a couple of minutes. Super clean location, but it was terribly busy and ordering online was a key move. I'd knock a star off because before my wife and I even got inside of the store, an employee of REI interrupted us to ask us a few open ended sales questions. No offense or disrespect intended, but how about you let me get inside of the store before you try your best to sell me something. I get it. You're doing your job and you have your agenda. But don't pounce on me outside of your store as I'm walking in right off the parking lot. Other than the sales goon trying to get me to buy who-knows-what, it was a great experience. I give up on REI and this store. The customer service is abysmal. Going to REI used to be such a good experience with a lot of good gear options and friendly people. But in the last few years at this store, the staff have zero insight or answers about the products, and are often rude. There are rare exceptions of course. The last straw was coming in and asking about different brands of a fairly large item. Something I want to see and try out in person before ordering. One staff member had no technical knowledge at all. No idea about pros/cons, fit, etc. She could barely read the product sign. The other tried to start some weird argument with me about hypothetical road trips rather than answering my questions about my actual needs. This should have been an easy sell. Just tell me why one or two options are the best choices and I would have walked out with one. Instead, I'm going to have to do more research or find another store. REI- what has happened?? Hubs and I made a stop here for some biking shoes and a new helmet. The store was clean and they only allowed so many people in at a time. There was plenty of employees around to assist us as well. Unfortunately they did not have many shoes or helmets in store but we managed to find a helmet stuffed away on the other side of the store. They also have a garage sale upstairs and talked us into a $20 co-op buy in which is a lifetime membership that gets you nice perks. Was worth it for the $20. Overall, they have pretty much anything you need for outdoor activities and if they don't have it in store you can buy it online with them. We will be back soon as we have a $20 cash card we need to use up! read more

REI has been around for forever - since 1938 - & they keep outdoing themselves... This review is for a few months ago, before Thanksgiving, when I needed to load up on long underwear to head to the colder East Coast. Their own brand is my fave. I've bought my hiking shoes/boots here for the last 25 years. My brand used to be Vasque but now I've found Keen to be the best hiking shoes for me - durable, great fit, comfortable, excellent support. Due to the Pandemic, they've rearranged the store in an ingenious way, creating different areas that give customers (and staff) an adequate amount of space, to socially distance. For example, the shoe area is cordoned off so that shoe salespeople can invite you in, if you are coming in to buy/look, rather than tons of people just milling around that space. Thoroughly impressed that the dressing rooms were even OPEN! So many stores I've patronized told me I'd have to just buy merchandise since they "couldn't" keep fitting rooms open b/c of Covid-19. REI cleans the fitting room every time a customer leaves AND there is a schedule on the door to indicate that. Thank you SO much for taking that extra step. Otherwise customers have to buy clothes, take them home to try on & then come back to return what doesn't fit. As usual, so much good stuff here: flip flop variety, fun T-shirts, bikes, camping gear for people who do that (haha - I like a nice hotel room ;) The best part is the staff - most, if not all - are outdoors people/hikers/kayakers, etc. who have hands on experience using REI's inventory out in the world! Great experience. Checked out there used shoes for sale couldn't find my size. Decided on some new trail runners that were on clearance. Alex was very knowledgeable. If you are uncertain, see Alex, tell him what you're looking for and what you're going to be using the shoes for and he'll set you up. Ended up getting some Salomon Sense ride 5.. once they're broken in.. they are the exact shoe I was looking for. Even not broken in. Great grip, feet didn't shift and was sturdy. read more

Poor (very poor) customer service. Long story short: I bought my bike in for service and was given a price estimate. When I went to pick up the bike, there was much confusion among the staff about how much to charge me. The actual charge was a lot more than the quote. The repair was completely fine, but the customer service was horrible. Honestly, I felt like they were just making up the pricing as they went along. They didn't clearly explain the charges and it felt like they were holding my bike hostage if I didn't agree to the final billing. I was told one thing by an employee, upon drop -off, and it wasn't honored when I picked up the bike. My advice - Get a firm price quote in writing. It was frustrating because I've had a good experience there in the past. There are a lot of other bike shops out there. I'll be going elsewhere in the future. read more

Another overpriced sports store. Staff was nice but not the most diverse selection of goods. If you buy a membership, it allows you to purchase used goods. Kelly helped me pick out climbing shoes and she was amazing!!! I went in to return too small climbing shoes and when I told her about blistering on my heel she helped me decide on the shoe and sizing and even showed me how to lace the shoes to help my heel move less. Went above and beyond and was so kind!! I also got $30 off from signing up for a membership earlier that month and was able to return my once-used too small shoes so it was a great deal. read more

This REI has enough space to display everything they sell. They also have enough clerks so that you can find someone quickly if you have a question about the merchandise. If you are in downtown Phoenix, it is quite a drive as it is not very close to any convenient freeway, the 51 being the closest. However, if you are in the neighborhood, this is a great store to find everything you need for camping, hiking, climbing and biking. It is not designed as a runners' store. Parking is easy with a good-sized parking lot. read more

A large store with a second floor alcove, you can pretty much find any gear or outfit here for your outdoor adventure needs! Right now it's clearance season, come in the check out their new items on sale ranging from boots, jackets and sleeping bags. My friend worked here and she really loved the vibe and culture this company has given her. I personally became a member once I became aware of so many things you can do. Once you move out from the east coast and see what the southwest is all about, you'll never want to leave! So many things to do here and my friend was the person that influenced me to get out there with nothing but a tent and sleeping bag. We had a lot of adventures and it's all thanks to the gears that we got from REI. The quality is seriously reliable. If it's your first time here and you want to get your adventures on, I recommend getting at least the following: 1. Tent - fits at least 2 2. Sleeping bag and pad - at least 30 degrees 3. Jet boil - for those mm mm good instant meals 4. Solar lamp - dark places 5. Nice pair of pants that can turn into shorts 6. Good sturdy shoes with ankle support 7. I have been waiting for hiking boot help for 15 minutes. Someone names Mauricio keeps hiding in the back room. A manager has been called, but they don't seem to understand customer service either. I waited an additional 15 minutes, and no one would tell me the lazy manager's name. So glad I didn't spend the $200 I was planning on spending here. I'll never return to a store, where employees like Mauricio get paid to hide from customers in the back room. He should stay in the back room, along with hiding manager. No guts. Got home and ordered the pair Mauricio couldn't be bothered to grab from his shoe hiding room, at 50% of REI price, and zero rude associate and absent manager contact. I won and they lost a customer, since the 80s, forever. I'll never recommend REI again, except to avoid it, their lazy employees and managers. read more

This might be the worst experience in a retail store I've had in the last year. The guy greeting people didn't say anything with a smile and the most negative attitude. Asked me if I he can help me with an online order and I told him no thanks I'm going inside. He looked at me and acted like I was lost. I go in and there are ropes everywhere around the shoes and it's all closed off for social distancing or whatever. So I'm like where the heck do I go. This gentleman "helps" me and that's loosely put. He shows me a few shoes and I quote, "I want to sell you these ones but they don't have your size". Sell me? What kind of nonsense is this. He's steps away and says I gotta go attend to other business in the middle of me asking questions. He proceeds to do the same thing 5 times and I was in there for maybe 15 minutes. He's so rude and condescending to me when I'm trying to find out what is a good freakin hiking shoe. He brings me out a few pairs and throws them in the seat and basically says here figure it out. They didn't have any type of sizes of what I wanted. I ended up going with a shoe who knows if it will be good or not. I'm like what about hiking socks. He just points over in some random direction and says these kind. There are 20 different kind of socks under the name he told me. I don't get the socks because I'm on tilt at this point. I got to the cashier and she was trying to be nice but I don't feel like she actually wanted to be there. REI needs to train their people in customer service. Be a little more attentive. read more

WARNING: BAIT & SWITCH! I was going on a multi day off the grid trip last year. While I was out shopping at REI I was encouraged to register and pay to become a member of their Coop. I was told that I would get back 10% on all purchases as a dividend. This sounded great so instead of just buying a couple of items that I intended to and the rest elsewhere for less, I bought everything I needed for my trip based on what the sales staff sold me. My order bumped from under $100 to over $700. I just logged onto the REI app to see my rewards. Instead of $70+ my reward was $3.90. I called support. They confirmed that this is accurate since I bought merchandise that is on sale. When I stated this is a bait and switch, the REI customer support rep told me that I should call the store so I could ask the manager to better educate their staff? Terrible customer service! Recently popped in to do some Christmas shopping and checked ahead of time to make sure that they had a few of the items that I was on the hunt for, but didn't actually purchase them. When I arrived, I noticed they were out of one item that I came for (but online said they had it)! I asked a super friendly employee and his system was showing that they still had 1, so they dug around in the back and FOUND IT! WHOO!!! Since I had to drive 30 mins to get here, this made me (aka Santa) so so happy! The customer service was so friendly from the safe/sanitizer greeting at the front to the sweet gal who checked me out at the end. I'll definitely be back here for future gifts and outdoor gear! :) ALSO! I just learned that their upstairs area has a "garage sale" corner where they have super discounted clothing, shoes, and gear. Molly, the rather rude and apparently USELESS checkout person, decided that she would not accept my member ID - even though my wife was using FOR ME - since we didn't have the same last name and I wasn't there - but she WOULD accept my step-son's membership ID. I complained, and at first they said they would transfer the points. But they have rules. F___ Off. Useless, stupid not helpful and ignorant. These jackasses only continue to have fewer stores. I wish there was some other option. I was going to go to another store and try on the shoes and then order from Amazon. My wife said just buyt them. WHY?? Haven't seen a REI store in awhile, they closed the store where I used to live. I decided to stop in because they have great stuff & i need to update my outdoor activities.. (meaning I need to be more active) Went straight back to the shoe section since I need some hiking shoes (did some hiking in athletic shoes, OUCH!) There's just too much to decipher here the shoes are so specialized you need a guide! Well you ask & a Guide will appear..... Up walks Sara, she is fantastic. Sara was very knowledgeable & friendly, since I'm am very inexperienced about finding the correct shoe for hiking, I am so happy to have met Sara.
