Maybe instead of chatting behind the counter, lock the door ON TIME! When this happens at my practice, our staff chalks it up to it being OUR fault and will either help the patient or kindly apologize that we are closed. In most cases, we try to assist them or at least ask what it is they need. If it's quick, no problem. If not, apologize and kindly ask them to come back tomorrow. I would give your staff training on common customer service practices and how kindness goes a long way for a business.
