As I read through the other reviews I see that I'm not the first to run across Ms. Maryann's (owner) nasty attitude. I had been saving up a visit to this art store as a treat to myself, because as an artist, to finally find an art store near home (La Grange), well, let's just say I was excited to find a local business with which to spend my money. With Blicks more than 15 miles away, I thought I'd hit the jackpot. WRONG. I walk in and was accosted by the owner. Maryann: "What's up"? Can you imagine my face? Imagine, shock, amazement...stopped in my tracks. Who greets a customer like this? Furthermore, do I know you? That you feel you can dismissively ask me, "what's up"? As if I'm interrupting you. OK, you know I'm thinking happy, happy--joy, joy when I arrived and she just BLEW THAT FEELING the moment I walked in the door! Me: (trying to recover and remember why I came) I'm looking for some art paper. Maryann: Bristol board? Me: Yes. But in tan or grey or brown. Maryann: That's not Bristol board. Me: (Thinking....ok.....so, what do you have?) The whole time, I'm still standing by the door because basically, she's working on framing (because I guess that's her bread and butter). And her back is to me. So I try again to explain what I want because she literally hasn't welcomed me or invited me to browse her store. And maybe I'm still a little in shock, so my feet are stuck. LOL But I'm looking around and I see mostly FRAMES. About 1/5 of the store is art supplies. When she finally decides to show me what paper she has, its in a cube, low on the floor. Each bundle wrapped in some old yellowed plastic with handwritten prices. So she points to the floor and says, this is what I have you can look through it. And she walks away. OK......So I get down on my knees and start looking. First trying to lift each packet of 24x28 paper, then deciding that's not going to work, and I don't want to ruin any paper. So, I bring out each packet, look at it, stack it beside me and go to the next one. Next thing I know, she's back again, standing 4 feet away asking, "Can I help you"? (asked in a way that I knew she meant the exact opposite) I look up at her thinking, wtf? But I say, "in what way"? She hesitates and then.... Maryann: Well, I'm pretty sure I don't have what you want. I'm thinking, wait a minute, what? Who says that to a customer? So, needless to say, I'm DONE with this whole scene, so I start putting the stuff back. Maryann: I'll put it back. Me: No I'll do it. Maryann: No, because you're putting it in wrong, the prices have to face out. I almost just threw the paper willy-nilly across the floor, but I didn't. I turned the blasted paper around so the prices faced out. So basically, she just came out from whatever the hell she was doing (instead of serving her ONE customer) to interfere with me going through her old ass paper because she didn't want the task of having to return it to its bin! When I was done, I started to say, "Wow, I'm really disappointed in my experience here". But I didn't get to finish because Miss Maryann said, "Well, I don't get a lot of requests for brown paper". That was it, I was out! OMG, this woman and her attitude! It's absolutely no surprise to me that her store was absolutely EMPTY. Typically my fellow creatives are friendly, curious and some may be introverted, but they're polite. Not this one. ARTISTS stay away from this hole in the wall. Pull up your big girl panties or jockeys and drive out to Blick's, Michaels or even Joann's Fabrics where customers are #1. It is even hard for me to give this business a star at all. The owner was very nasty and condescending the minute I walked into her store! I'm sure that the work is good (as she is still open) but the customer service is awful! Glad to see I'm not the only one with this opinion. I have never had a local Elmhurst business treat me so badly... it is a shame that the store is here in town. I can't comment on the work done as the owner gave me the impression that MY business wasn't worth her time. Dear Maryann, I have 7 siblings & their families here in town, count them (& friends) out as well! You really ruined my holiday spirit, ba humbug ! read more

I will never use them again. They are located very close to my home and it is convenient but no. I brought an old Time Magazine cover in to be framed. It is Covid time but they had it for months and there was no communication at all. I finally called two different number and left messages and emailed. No answer. As I said it was close. I drove by and they were there. I guess this customer is/ was nit very important. AND on top of that the picture was ripped. She tried to tell me it was that way. NO, I had that cover from the beginning. I know what it looked like. I am angry and there is nothing I can do. Never again. read more

I just picked up 2 pieces of cross stitch that were framed beautifully by Mary Ann. One of the pieces had beads and she took special care to make sure that the beads hung properly behind the glass. The only complaints I have are that the cost of framing these pieces was about double what I thought it ought to be, and the quoted delivery date was 2 was later than promised. That being said, the fabrics are stretched beautifully and the double matting and frames we chose together are perfect for each piece, so I guess you get what you pay for. I will definitely use them again, but I wouldnt take anything in there close to a holiday - there's only so much one person can do! I am very happy with the framing she did for me. read more

K&T Colors does a nice job with their framing, and has a nice selection of art supplies, but seems to suffer from a "we're more important than you" attitude. Each time I come in I'm kept waiting for much longer than you should have to wait. Last time they lost my order. This time, they lost my business because after standing around listening to two of the employees have a discussion and completely ignore both me and the other customer in the store who was also waiting, I decided it's time to take my custom framing job elsewhere. read more

Needed to get a triptych framed. I have never done custom framing before, was a little apprehensive, however the owner was very nice and was accepting of my budget restraints. The finished frames look better than we thought they would. Definitely take anything you need framed here first. read more

What a treasure. Moving from the city, I was missing the arts scene, and eyed this store immediately. The artwork on the windows drew me in. I popped in on a whim with my 4 year old son for our first visit, hoping to find a specific kind of paint marker. Maryann was immediately helpful and deeply knowledgeable, and had just what I was looking for. My son was hoping to find something to build his own Humpty Dumpty toy, and she gave him her own silly putty! Such a kind and thoughtful gesture. I returned today because one of the markers I purchased was defective, and was thrilled to find that Maryann was not only there again, but that she's the owner. She helped me quickly and kindly with my marker issue, and as we got to talking she offered such wonderful advice for both me and my son as budding artists. I can't wait to return. read more

I bought a big Banksy print that needed to be stretched and I had no idea how or where to do this. I randomly found this place near one of my offices in the burbs. When I went in I was pretty nervous but I got really good help. Apparently the print wasn't sealed and they recommended I do that otherwise the color would fade or smudge. I'm glad I did because it took the canvas from looking dull to being quite vibrant. My print was LARGE so it wasn't cheap but something tell me had I gone to somewhere by me in Lincoln park they would have charged double. I didn't get it framed just yet because I was overwhelmed with framing options but I will probably go back for that in the future. read more

I'd give six stars if I could! Great selection of art supplies, frames, pretty much anything you can think of, and after repeated visits, I've never had anything other than top-notch service. They're very friendly, always asking after my most recent projects, and they're more than happy to answer any questions that I might have. I see some of the reviews about Maryann's attitude, but I have never experienced this, and neither has anybody I've talked to (and, since I recommend this place to lots of my friends, I talk to a lot of people on the subject). Nobody at K&T has ever been anything but warm and helpful. Perhaps she had a bad day, but given customer care and product quality, I'd give K&T Colors all possible stars! read more

First off, this store has an amazing selection and many times I've had excellent and attentive customer service. The 2 star review is for my visit today to do some window shopping. An older lady who I've seen several times at the store (She may be an owner) assisted me. I just wanted to see some art portfolios (when I described what I had in the past she corrected me as it was a "Display book"). There was a type I'd seen online and I wanted to look at it and compare it to my older type. She kept standing between me and the portfolios as though she didn't want me to touch them. I finally got to examine them. I then asked for the adhesive corners for mounting (Again she corrects me: "photo corners") I decided they were a little pricey and said "good-bye" to which she thanked me for coming in and looking at things without buying. This woman has no manners or sense of customer service. She constantly corrected me (Rightfully so? Perhaps but it seemed unnecessary), inserted herself between me and the merchandise I wanted to examine and then was rude & sarcastic to me on the way out. Again, I've had EXCELLENT customer service here before and they have a great selection. But this woman needs to get over herself and learn how to deal with customers. Just because I don't buy something today doesn't mean I won't be back. read more

Was surprised at the attitude. I wanted a few pieces re-matted after moving to Elmhurst. I like to shop local businesses, so thought this was the place to go. Simple job, need new mats for art that was already framed. Ouch, expensive, and a long turnaround time, two weeks! I did a little online research, and it was a fraction of the price for the same product. I called in (multiple times over a week) to see if they would reconsider the pricing or justify their higher than I expected pricing. After I finally got in touch with the owner she hurriedly told me she wouldn't do the work. I guess this store doesn't want the business. I understand paying for quality work and product, but no one wants to feel ripped off. This business has no interest in negotiating or clarifying the value they offer. I'll be finding a new framing store. read more

I have had a lot of images framed at K&T over the past year. They are unfailingly reliable and do excellent work. They also know how to work creatively to fit your budget. Working with them is a fun and enjoyable experience. Recommend them highly. read more
