I was a bit nervous when I first came by this place last week. I know where all the supermarkets are in this neighborhood, but alas they're all a pretty far walk and I was feeling a little under the weather. But I was on a mission. That mission required chicken breast meat cutlets. While looking to my left and right and trying to count in my head which direction's supermarket was a shorter walk, my eyes glanced over "K&T MEATS" across the street. I shrugged and figured, "kay, they sell meat - huzzah!". Upon entering it smelled like meat. No, not like nasty, rancid animal corpses - but like the smell of the meat section at a supermarket. To be honest I had never purchased any cuts at an actual butcher shop so I didn't really know what to expect. I took a look at the meats provided, took note of the prices and absorbed all the signage by the butchers. I knew I wanted chicken and so I ordered about 2.5 lbs of chicken breast. It was supposed to be $1.99 per lb, but my meat totaled to exactly $10.95. My math skills told me this was wrong but I didn't inquire because at this point this place just because convenient as I was willing to pay more than I needed to (this place is a short walk from my boyfriend's house - I'll be back but next time I WILL inquire as to how they arrive to their pricing). It did get on my nerves that I wasn't really shown how my meat was being weighed. Supermarkets are generally pretty good about telling me the price and letting me make any adjustments if I want to... The (very good-natured) butcher taking care of my order asked me how I wanted my meat prepared and I asked for it to be pounded and "butterfly cut" since I was going to do it myself. I wasn't sure if "butterfly cut" was a widely known term since I had gotten it off an old recipe I found online for cheese/spinach stuffed chicken, but he seemed to know what he was doing. He thought it meant thinly cut, I thought it meant sliced through the middle - halfway - to allow the chicken breast to be stuffed with something, but whatevs, this was probably my fault for assuming Pinterest recipes know "chicken butchering" terms, lol. When I got to my boy's place and began getting to work on my newly acquired meat (lol) I found that they were all evenly sliced (thickness wise), all nicely sized, no nasty fatty parts and the coloring was good and healthy - no weird reddish or brown splotches signaling bacteria problems or old meat. I made Italian style, chicken stuffed with muenster cheese (I wanted mozzarella, but remember my supermarket dilemma? Yeah, K&T Meats DOES have a corner section with gourmet-like [and imported!] gnocchi, pasta and cheeses - but mostly Greek & Italian offerings but NO mozzarella :-/) and garlic roasted potatoes. I used some leftover chicken the next day for grilled chicken sautéed in a lemon, butter, white wine sauce - it was delicious, cooked thoroughly quickly and tasted great (no matter how good of a cook you think you are, if the meat isn't good then you're SOL). I love supporting small local businesses and I will definitely be back here for more chicken and to try other meats they had (see my pics for all their meat products!) - may even pick up their gnocchi as well. My experience here was certainly a 5 star one, but I knocked off a star because I'm still confused as to why my chicken was $11 for an amount that wouldn't cost me $6 at a regular supermarket - but either way, I still wholeheartedly recommend this gem of a place :). read more

I really like to go to K&T Meats when I am in the area. They have pretty good meat in my experience. They also have reasonably priced olives. I like to get the ones with the pepper. They are friendly and helpful. They do the job. That is all I have to say about that. read more

How can you now love this place?! I actually live around the corner from this butcher, they have excellent cuts and for amazing prices! Order your cut, then pay at the cashier booth towards the back, then bring back your stamped receipt to redeem your cut. The ribeye cuts are amazing, bone-in chicken breast, you can always ask them to grind, slice specifically how you want your cuts prepped. CASH ONLY read more

Tomorrow is Meat Fest 2011, which is a big BBQ I'm throwing, not a subversive after-hours orgy in Chelsea. I needed lots of ribs and good steak. After some very detailed back and forth consultation with Kate P., I decided to check this place out. I called yesterday and asked if they had baby back ribs. The woman said yes. I asked if they had enough in stock for me to come back Friday (today). The woman mockingly laughed, and said, "How the hell am I supposed to know what we'll sell between now and then? Show up and maybe you'll get lucky." I knew I had found a real NY butcher. I went in today and told the guys behind the counter that I wanted every rack they had. This seemed to make them very happy. They had a great selection and a small grocery section in the back (imported goods and cheeses). I would definitely come here again. Again, Meat Fest is just a BBQ and the guest list includes several women with women parts that I am attracted to. read more

I like cooked meat, raw meat, fried meat, grilled meat. I'll eat it all no matter the occasion. Funerals? Obviously. But there's nothing quite like dangling a bloody ribeye from your suit jacket during your daughter's wedding. Seeing what rabid carnivores will leap out of the woodwork - ready to feast. I did it. So shoot me. I was hungry. She cried, I dined. t was a big affair. 2, 3 maybe four hundred people in all - we did it real nice out on the Island. My family and I always shopped here for years. Once the new owner took over the quality, service, and atmosphere went down. Haven't been here in a couple of months and thought I would give another try. I ordered several different meats and spent well over $300. Upon going home and took the meat out I felt like the amount of meat seemed less than I paid for. I put it on the scale and sure enough it did. I live in Long Island and was having a bbq and couldn't take the drive back to return everything and get my money back. But lesson learned. I will NEVER go there again and will make it known to my family and friends to never go there. Shame on you! Word to the owner... you lost, not me. read more

I love this local butcher. When I moved to Astoria, I vowed that I would give local businesses my business/attention. It took me a while to make it to a butcher, however I highly recommend you don't make the same mistake! K&T offers fantastic quality meat (you can tell the difference immediately between your freezer aisle at the grocery store and their display case). Their meat is refrigerated, not frozen and then dethawed. Further, I got a 1.5 lbs of ground beef, and it came out to $4.45! I almost asked if they quoted my price wrong, however when I looked back at the price card in the display case, I was pleasantly surprised that I was walking out with a steal. I highly recommend ditching your frozen, sub-par grocery meat aisle and giving K&T your business! read more

Great, quality meats at a reasonable price. You order with the butcher and then they give you a little slip to pay at the cashier before you pick up your purchase. Lots of other goodies in the store, but I came strictly for my ribeye. Will certainly be back to get some more meat. Way better than getting it at the supermarkets! read more

i finally stopped by k and t meats on a recommentation from a friend who is a regular and he was right the place has good fresh stuff and prices are more then fair. i picked up a few pounds of hot sausages, chicken cutlets, filet mignon , lamb chops, feta cheese , olive oil and i was happy with the final price which is cheaper then a few other meat stores i have visited. the place is spacious and long inside so you can practice social distancing with ease, the guys behind the counter are quick and wrap the meats neatly and compact. the owners must be greek cause they carry gyro meats, pita bread , feta cheese and a bunch of other goods from greece. the place is on broadway in astoria and parking is not easy but if you come before 6pm its not that bad. i try to limit my intake of red meat but the grilled hot sausages and stuffed inside a giant warm garlic pita bread is my guilty pleasure and i had plenty of pleasure this evening. overall 4 stars on my yelp meter and good chance i will add another star on my next visit . read more

When I first moved to Astoria I liked this place. It was very convenient and they had good prices. Last time I went there I got shell steak which looked pretty nice in the display counter (not as thick as I like it cut but the price made up for that) but the guy taking my order got the meat from the back not the display case. I also asked him just to trim some of the excess fat away of another piece of meat I was purchasing and he wouldn't even do that. When I got home to cook my steak I saw a lot of gray areas of meat and was so pissed off. After that incident I went to find another local meat market. I found International Meat Market and fell in LOVE! Talk about a real strip steak! I haven't been back to this place since. They do have good prices here but I rather pay more for quality meats and great service and expertise. read more

Finally I found chicken that is not rubbery or tough. I bought two whole chicken breasts in the bone, deboned them myself and made chicken broth from the bones. Froze the chicken breasts which looked lean, nice and pink. The next day made spaghetti pasta with the chicken breast cut in cubes and sauteed with chopped onions, fresh chopped garlic, basil, mushrooms, salt and tomato sauce, Ragu marinara by the way. I went to this butcher shop and bought some veal cutlets that turned out to be pork. I am Muslim and do not eat pork. I was cooking for a friend and she told me they were pork. No wonder they were so cheap. The mislabeling of the food is not only illegal, it's very disrespectful. How can anyone feel safe shopping here when they can't possible know what they're buying. Not only was the meat so suspicious, the service was awful. There was a steady stream of foul language coming from the back of the store and the man who served me had no gloves. That should have been my first clue. I am officially done with this shady place. I am going back to the Continental Meat Market. I'm now sticking to the tried and true. read more

Things have changed. My mom shopped at K&T and I'd drive out of my way to shop there as well. Over the past year the meat does not appear as fresh. This has never been the case in all my years as a customer. I drove to Astoria this week to buy chicken and pork kabobs. I spent over $80 and when I got home and went to rewrap the chicken kabobs it smelled...the meat did not have a great color..but I attributed it to lighting...Needless to say it went straight into the trash. I've been passing up certain cuts of meat because they don't look fresh... and now I know that it isn't as fresh as it has been in the past. I'm sorry to say. I will no longer be making the trip to my beloved butcher shop. :-( read more

I didn't know about this place till I saw a post from a friend on facebook who celebrated Greek Easter, as he was raving about a lamb he received. My mouth started watering right away. Then I found out that I went to school & hung out with the owner Rob when we were just offspring. He's really a great down to earth guy. After explaining that i'm disabled & I am unable to go shopping myself, I asked if they deliver, and they do. The delivery man is very well mannered, polite & prompt - I just had to hook him up - what a combo, good food & good people. They just earned a new loyal customer for life. I ordered some THICK cut pork chops that were seasoned & broiled to perfection, a HUGE succulent prime rib steak that fed 2 & now it's all gone. Time to restock - Give Rob a call & tell 'em I sent you. YAY!! =) - EDIT: On my 2nd order, I decided to try some green olives, VERY tasty, some hamburger meat & some spicy & sweet dry Italian sausage. Mmmm mmm GOOD!! I can't get enough of this place's fresh meat. I am going to experiment with different kinds of steaks & try new things. Rob even threw in some Greek sausage (I forgot the name) & THAT was some good stuff too. I boiled it, seasoned it & threw it right in the broiler. OMG!! Every bite was like heaven. I only have a few reviews since it's difficult to make me log on somewhere & rave about something unless it's top choice & this place has me hooked.
