I had a horrible experience at K Chula seeing Holly for highlights/cut. As you can see in the photos I received an atrocious job of blonde highlights. I've never once ever had any issues with previous stylists lifting my hair color and I can't believe I was allowed to walk out of the salon with my hair looking horrible and paying full price. During the highlighting process it was very apparent Holly did not want to be there working late on a Friday night to do my highlights even though my appointment was scheduled for 6pm. She was rushing the entire time, put my foils in such a messy way and hit me with a brush several times while styling. During the wash/rinse process she pulled the foils out so rapidly it hurt as she was pulling on my hair forcefully. While styling she then placed bleach on my scalp without foil twice because she didn't like the orange of my hair. I left the salon in pain with my scalp feeling on fire for several hours after the appointment. The next morning I received mediocre customer service from Carrie the owner who genuinely did not seem very concerned with this horrible uneven money piece/highlighting job. Carrie let me know she could fix the color but not blow dry/style. Why did I pay $250 then? The blow dry and style should be included especially in the winter when I would've had to gone out in the cold with wet hair. I was able to receive a full refund after waiting at the salon for 45 minutes and I should've been offered the full refund right away when I stated I was upset with my hair. Hair Stylists need to be held more accountable for their actions and I truly hope nobody else has to experience such pain and discomfort at this salon. Do not come here! I will no longer be recommending K Chula. read more

Personality minus!!! I went to KChula to see if my 8 year old son could get his haircut on 1/16/20 on or around 7:40. We did not have an appointment and mentioned that to the host when we arrived. The sign in the front window said "OPEN" when we arrived. After asking if we could get a haircut, the host simply said "We are closed" and offered no other response. What was the part that was the most disturbing was the look on the host's face. It was angry, confrontational and aggressive. I didn't say anything, but my son asked why she was so angry and if we did something wrong. She simply could have offered another appointment. I went here last Saturday on the recommendation of Rhonda G (thanks Rhonda :)) to see Lurri about my hair. Thinning hair is hereditary in my family and I'm freaking out cause I'm always thinking I'm losing my hair (well between that, being a single mother of an 8 year old and just STRESS......). I decided to let my relaxer grow out and just keep the natural texture of my hair. Plus, lately, I've been having issues with my local beautician and my cut. I can show her the same picture of what I want and every time I walk out of there, it's like I never have the cut that I want. And nothing is worse than paying to get your hair done and not being happy about it! So I traveled to K Chula and boy WAS IT WORTH IT! I love the inside, I love Lurri and I love that it was not super crowded on a Saturday like most of the places I've been too. The best part of it was that when I left my hair was super soft, super cute (YYAAAYYY she actually gave me the cut I WANTED) and I was happy about my hair- and I haven't been happy about my hair in a really long time! Since I'm new to Chicago, I've been all over Yelp trying to find a new salon. I decided to try K Chula based on a number of different factors, which included proximity to my apartment, pricing, and availability. Another reason? Their website isn't pompous or affected. Other Chicago salons should take note. When I called for my appointment, it was about 9:30 AM on a Friday morning, and to my surprise, they were open already. I explained I was looking to become a new client and needed a full foil and a trim. The woman I spoke with - whose name I didn't catch, unfortunately - was extremely sweet and helpful, and was able to fit me in later that day. My stylist was Jennifer, who has a great personality and tons of experience. She gave me an excellent consultation for both my color and cut, and went above and beyond what I expected in terms of color service. My haircut looks adorable, too - even my boyfriend noticed it. While I was there, I felt as though I was in a really positive work environment, and that often reflects in a stylists work. All of the employees were smiling and making friendly jokes with one another at times. Whether you want to close your eyes and relax or chat throughout your appointment, the atmosphere seemed to be inviting towards either type. The cost of the visit was $150 for a full foil (highlights & lowlights), a trim, and a blowout. I was there for 3 hours, which was a bit unexpected as I'm usually in-and-out in about 90 minutes for the exact same services in New York. Wicker Park is a better place because of K Chula. There's no reason anyone in the hood should have a sub-par hair do when there's a group of women at the top of their field offering their expertise at a reasonable price. The place is clean, stylish and spacious. The service is friendly, precise and thorough. Chicago can be cold in the winter and there are numerous sub-par hair cutteries. That is the hard cold truth, and at times, as hardened we grow in the Windy City, it can get you down. But there are anecdotes. I was lucky to find K Chula. When I arrived on a blustery bitter evening, one month into an awful hair cut from a 'hack' uptown, I was hopeful but wary. I was quickly put at ease by the friendly staff, and my stylist, Molly, quickly made her skills apparent. She saved my hair! Since that day, the weather has warmed up, and I bicycle around town wearing a lighter jacket and with a bounce in my step. I'm so grateful for the change of season! I bought a Groupon for a 60 min faccial from here and I'm addicted to this place! Let me start off by staying, I would have given this place 4.5 stars if possible, but only because the tranquility room isn't really all that nice. But the facial and Fay more than make up for it, hence my 5 stars. I've had lots of crappy facials from luxurious, expensive spas. I would much rather have a 5 star facial in a 3 star room. So if you're super into the ambiance- this isn't your place. If you're after a facial that will make you look like you're glowing even when you're not preggo- this is your spot. And....this place is super afforadble at $60/hr facial. Ok..so why was it so awesome? Fay is super sweet for starters. She is very accommodating and makes sure to ask you if you have any sensitivities or allergies (which I do) and then she makes sure to stay away from those products. She used sensitive skin products on me and my skin looks amazing. She was so considerate and gentle. She kept asking me if I was ok and anytime she thought she was too rough (which couldn't have been farther from the truth) she apologized. She is very knowlegeable and I highly recommend her. Oh, and the facial massage she gave me rocked- I about fell alseep in the room. The down side as mentioned above- the room is very small (think closet) and the ambiance isn't very swanky. Kinda cheesy pictures on the wall and some foreign music playing (which she joked about). The room isn't sound proof so you can hear the hair dressers outside, but I was able to drone them out. If you want to look like you have better skin than all your friends- go here! If you want to feel like you're getting a facial in some foreign locale- go here! I had a very nice job done in my hair today. I walked in this morning with a messy hair, in need of a super cut and there they were! To my rescue! The owner which, of course, i didn't get her name ( if you've been reading my reviews you will notice that I have a terrible time recalling names) was the one who cut my hair. She was very friendly and talkative, and i love when people make you feel comfortable while working on your hair, or nails, or even wax. Facility is clean and nice, and I can't believe I didn't know about this place. They said they have been in business for the past 2 yrs, and for sure this will be my place for now on. They have a variety of services, but for now I have only tried the hair cut, which was phenomenal. I went to K Chula for the first time yesterday and got my hair cut by the lovely Lurri. My hair is long, dry, and split end-y. But she managed to give me a great cut that hides all the badness that lives in my hair. It's only two blocks away and everyone seemed friendly. And you can tip on a credit card, which seems to be rare in salons these days! As a fun bonus, a cop came in and was crime watching the street from the window. Being new to Chicago, I had no idea where to go for a haircut and thanks to Yelp I chose K Chula. My stylist, Tammy, was very sweet and easy to talk to, and she gave me a great haircut and brow wax. I have wavy hair that a lot of stylists don't seem to 'get'--I've had a lot of BAD experiences in the past with stylists giving me awful chunky layers (aka stair hair) or bad 80s mall hair with a diffuser. I wish I could give 3.5 stars as the customer service and esthetician was incredibly nice but the total service I received wasn't amazing. I got the youswoop deal back in Feb. 2011 for salon credit and got a brazilian wax and an express facial. Evelyn was amazing, a super nice woman who was the right amount of "chatty", she knew when I needed conversation (distraction from the brazilian) and when I did not (during the facial which was very relaxing). The brazilian: I have been getting brazilians for years so I know what it should be like/what to expect and I have to say this wasn't good. The actual experience itself was not that painful as she used hard wax (a plus) however when I was able to get a better look at her work afterwards, I realized she missed an entire section "right between the thighs area" (if you know what I mean ladies). Then I don't know if it had to do with how she pulled the wax off but in the later weeks when it started growing back it grew back very uneven and in patches ?!?!? I have never had that problem before. Not a place I would recommend to get a brazilian. The facial: For an express facial it was a great deal on the price ($40) and it says it is a 30 min facial but Evelyn definitely went over the 30 min time limit. It was so relaxing and I felt like there was no difference in the results between this facial and the $150 facial I got at the Trump Spa. She also noted a couple problems with my skin, a couple of dry patches and asked if I wanted an add-on of collagen to help. The best parts were: 1. SHE ASKED! Other places just say you need it and TELL you to get it with no room for no, 2. She did not pressure me to buy anything, she recommended somethings but not once did I feel pressured, she was simply recommending to help with my troubled areas. All in all, I had a great experience with Evelyn and the facial but the unfortunate brazilian experience was disappointing, especially because it messed me up for my next wax. read more

I came to K Chula to get a perm. My stylist was really helpful and helped me decide on the size of the rods. She made me feel at home and we had a great conversation. After she finished my hair was extra curly but still really soft. She did demaged my hair at all. The salon is very clean, professional and has a great atmosphere. I went here today and I couldn't be happier! I have been looking to find a stylist I could commit to since moving to the city and I FOUND HER! Lurri did amazing things to my hair. The cut is cute, flirty and flows perfectly.The coloring pops! It's sassy and I love it! I look forward to letting her go wild on my hair for many, many years to come! This is a late review, went here 2 years ago excited to support a Latina-owner business. I saw Holly based on a review I read about her work with curly hair. She was very kind but I left with the worst cut I've ever received. I had to get it fixed the next day from another salon that confirmed it was very uneven and blunt (which is horrible for curls). I had to put in a fabulous review for K Chula! I went there for the first time today and had a wonderful experience. My stylist was Lurri and she started off spending almost 10 minutes talking with me about how I wanted my hair to look and here is the shocker among stylists I have been to... she actually LISTENED to me! I got exactly the style we discussed at the beginning of the appointment. Plus the shop was clean and not at all pretentious. They also got me in right away so there was no waiting to get an appointment. Finally it was very reasonably priced, only $40 for a woman's cut compared to $60 - $80 for some of other salons in the area. In general I don't like getting my hair cut and this was one of the most relaxing visits to a salon that I have ever had. I've been there twice before and they've been okay but consistent. The recent visit however was totally disappointing. I would not go back again. I went in for a hair cut and I have color treated hair which I maintain very carefully since it's a fashion color and fades quickly. The stylist who was washing my hair however was not even aware that she needed to use color safe shampoo until I requested specifically. After I told her the staff needed to scramble to find the shampoos and conditioners. I think this is quite unprofessional. I informed the stylist what she needed to avoid touching my recent piercing but she was so clumsy and dragged my piercing which caused severe pain. By that point I was just not enjoying the whole experience. Trimming usually doesn't take long but she handled my hair I'd say for less than ten minutes. I have quite thick hair and often it takes longer for trimming because the stylist need to thin out the ends for a bit for the hair to sit well. Nothing like that was done and all she did was straight cuts. So if you have naturally straight, thick, and strong hair like me, DO NOT GO THERE. They seem clueless. Terrible and literally painful experience. I really wanted to support small business with diverse staff. But the service is just bad. read more

I had Lurrie and I'm not usually the type that likes to gab while getting my hair done but she was so friendly and before I knew it, I found myself chattering away. I'm a guy, so I don't do much of the hair coloring and i haven't got a perm since the 80's (just kidding!). If I could write one word and have it convey all of the awesomeness of this place, it would be: Lurri!! She was my stylist, but, in fact, the entire vibe of this place was right on for me - aesthetically pleasing but without pretense, diverse staff and clients, and, of course, highly skilled stylist/colorist and top of the line products (Pureology). I have long dark hair, and I needed it colored, and I spent time on Yelp doing my research. I am totally glad I did. For $55 (not including tip), I got a gorgeous coloring; in fact, I commented that my hair actually looked a bit healthier after the process than before. I didn't want a cut now, but I will definitely head back to Lurri for that also. She is the kind of stylist you want to cultivate a long-term relationship with (sounds weird, but so true). I also tend to dread the "small talk" aspect of interacting with stylists, but I ended up having a really genuine conversation with Lurri about Korean game shows, the best Pureto Rican vendors in Humboldt Park, and how best to maintain my fantastic color. Also, just as a side note, I got there 30 mins early and was so happy to find an awesome toy store right on the same block (Building Blocks, review to come) and a great bakery/cafe which I forgot the name of where I got a most needed pull of espresso. I purchased a YouSwoop for a facial at K Chula. The salon is very standard, and doesn't have a super upscale vibe but the receptionist was nice and offered me a drink and to hang my coat. I wasn't very impressed with the facial room. It looked a bit cluttered and it was pretty small. When I went to lay on the chair, there was a bunch of hair under the sheets (probably from a haircut), so I asked the esthetician to change the sheets and she did. Although I wasn't impressed with the salon and the ambiance, I have to say that Evelyn's facial was amazing! She was very sweet, gentle, and explained each step to me. It was very relaxing and she did a really great job, making sure that I was at the right temperature and asking questions but didn't talk too much which I think is important when you're trying to relax! I really appreciated her personal style. Plus, it was such a good deal from YouSwoop that it was totally worth it. I don't know that I'd try their other services as I wasn't altogether impressed with the salon, but I really liked Evelyn and thought she and the receptionist were very professional. read more

K Chula is a gem of a hair salon. I've been going to Carrie for years and she is simply fabulous at getting my thick locks to behave. It's pure magic. Plus, she's warm, fun and always welcoming. So much so that when I got out after a recent hospitalization, I went to see Carrie the next day ... she was just the medicine that I needed! The salon is now even more chic with a trendy makeover.
