August 17, 2024 - Two for dinner before the SRT show at 8 pm. This was actually my birthday pick for me - a selfish unethical vegan, its not about the animals, its about my health and not dying too early?? . (actually I am a Nutritarian Whole Food Plant based eater) Got a 2 hour (free) parking spot just a block away!!! Score in Sarasota and in this neighborhood is crazy difficult parking especially in season. (this was a slow hot august Saturday night) A little light traffic this time of year on a Saturday night. We were greeted promptly and was efficient and awesome through out. We REALLY like the interior, the seating, the cleanliness etc. Drinks were awesome. We got single crab cake app and the shitake "escargot". These TWO items were fantastic!!!! My wife thinks naming and promoting something as 'cheese' or as escargot/snails that is really mushrooms is - dumb. So having said that she like the mushroom appetizer and we both love shitake and most all of the mushrooms!!! (I eat my G-BOMBS every day!! Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, & Berries) We ordered a Caesar Salad as this is one of my wife's go to favorite salads at a few Sarasota restaurants with obviously the croutons and the dressing and of course the copious cheese shavings and chunks making the main SAD diet ingredients and hyper palatable dopamine triggering aspect of it so enjoyable?? She want to see how a vegan substitute might fair? I had hope a thick shave cashew or parmesan vegan attack and a creamy thick vegan dressing might result, but the dressing was almost void of notice and there was no grated or shaved cheesiness at all. It was not really a contender for a very simple Caesar salad. Just a thin white wetness on the leaves. For our mains my wife got the Love Loaf in a tomato soup as she tries to stay away from white potatoes because of her Lupus and other stuff. We realized later that the tomato base HAD a potato cream in it as well????? Yikes. The presentation was fantastic and a host of fresh colors and vegetables was a wonderful site. The Love Loaf itself was just okay with a lot of ingredients and flavors but nothing stand out. The accompanying broccoli in her dish was distractingly sugary/sweet and the carrots almost a candied sugary item. Frankly as a vegetable guy this was heresy? mushy carrots and broccoli soaked in sweetness? (sugar, jackfruit, honey?? - no can't be that?) We just did not like that. I got the Pan Roasted 'smoked' mushrooms. This was accompanied by a broccoli mash. The mash was ok. Like the loaf I am sure it has lots of good things in it but it was so processed and mashed it has no distinctive character or variety of flavors or textures? The 'smoke' or the cooking process for this was NOT to my liking. It just tasted like liquid smoke and very artificial and a bad taste in my mouth. The mushrooms were very nice and fresh but overall I would not try this again. I think this has a lot potential but instead of trying to make substitution foods for snail, meat, barbecue, pizza and cheese eating folks maybe a few awesome whole food plant based minimally processed and prepared and mix entrees? So with that I wanted to say in closing - this was NOT an inexpensive meal either? With just 1 truly alcoholic beverage, and our flat water request turned into a bottle of Saratoga somehow? we cleared the cash register w/gratuity over $160 for two? We will probably give it another go, but be very selective and ask a lot of questions before we order. read more

I truly loved this spot. The parking is a bit tight on a Friday night but just drive around the valet parking. Upon entry our waiter/host seated us and was very very very involved with the menu options. He was lovely but did tell us more than I needed to know, although very very helpful! My wife and I had a wonderful experience at Ka Papa!! Our server was very warm and professional. She took exceptional care of us from start to finish. The decor is beautiful and we had made an early reservation, so we were seated right in the front window to watch the world go by as we ate. The whole menu is plant-based which gave us many options to choose from. We split two entrees and they were both super. Had a hot frothy drink and a beer recommended by our server. Went on a Sunday for their brunch menu which was really good. Wide variety of your favorite breakfast foods made vegan. Particularly of mention was the brie cheese which was sweet and savory. This was a wonderful experience in vegan fine dining. I gotta start with dessert, as that's always my favorite! We shared the chocolate chip pan cookie which was served hot in a cast iron skillet, and the apple dessert, it was like a warm piece of pie but like a bread. They were both delicious! The good was the food- it's delicious and unique and the wine was wonderful. I had the salmon ( plant based ) and my husband had the pasta ( he didn't love it) the salmon was worth the whole trip and the wine was wonderful but you definitely need a starter and entree and a desert per person to feel satiated . I am from San Diego and we have some award winning vegan restaurants, this spot is right there with the top 2 in SD! I also have done a good amount of traveling around the US, and put this at the top Vegan Restaurants I have personally experienced with out a doubt! I ordered the Tempranillo to start which once it opened up was perfect. *Spicy Orange Butternut Squash Soup- the cream on top made from LENTIL was so silky and creamy, it was SO delicious! The toasted pumpkin seeds add a nice crunch! The spice was a perfect spicy, you tasted the spice with out it being too much. The portion was perfect. *Summer Squash Noodles- WOW! I was slightly hesitant just because I was in the mood for pesto, yet the server highly recommended this dish between the toss up. What a wonderful find during our travels through Sarasota!! Whenever I go to a new city, the first thing I look for is vegan restaurants and this one did not disappoint. The food was out of this world from appetizers to dessert. The service was wonderful and we were even allowed to bring our dog. Excellent food and excellent service! We ate outside and it felt very special to be eating such beautiful food in a lovely atmosphere. We were in a narrow outdoor breezeway accessible from the back from the parking lot behind the restaurant. I loved the avocado papaya salad and the basil pesto spaghetti. I also enjoyed a mint, lime mock-tail. I am not vegan but I dont eat gluten, wheat, or dairy so this was great for my stomach. Everything was very fresh and beautifully prepared. I love that the menu was filled with vegetables and not heavy on soy or fake meats. I went back again the next night by myself and had the same papaya avocado salad and pesto spaghetti because it was so good. And again the service was excellent. If you've been to other vegan restaurants like Plant in Asheville or Blossom in NYC, you will be disappointed. There was nothing innovative or particularly delicious about their food.
