I've read about Three Sisters and have had tamales and tortillas made with their masa at various restaurants. Last weekend they had a stand at the PSU Farmer's Market and were selling products including their Hominy Grits in both white and yellow varieties. We love grits so I bought a bag of each to try. I will never willingly buy any other grits ever again. These made the most delicious, fresh, corn-y tasting polenta / grits that I have ever made. Crazy good. No need to add anything but salt, though I did put it over the top with some good butter. The difference in flavor with this fresher, stone-ground organic corn is simply mind-blowing. Seek them out and try it, you will never want any other polenta or grits again.

Outstanding corn tortillas -- blue, yellow, and white -- made from stone-ground corn masa and 100% fresh nixtamal. Available at their stand at the Saturday morning Portland Farmers Market at PSU as well as the People's Food Co-op, New Seasons, and Whole Foods. A local company, Three Sisters makes what those who know say are the best organic tortillas in the Pacific NW since they're the only tortilla retailer in the area that uses organic nixtamalized corn. You can taste the difference. Even if you haven't picked up a pack of their actual tortillas at the farmers market or an area store you've probably eaten them at one of the better, higher-end Portland restaurants that serve tortillas. It's always great to come across and support yet another local company that uses traditional methods and organic, non-GMO materials to produce a tasty, high-quality product.

You walk in to a cute dining area- mismatched tables and chairs that work together! Order at the counter, get your drinks and either sit in or outside at picnic tables. Then wait for some of the best bbq in Portland. The brisket is fork tender, the chicken tacos are smothered in great slaw and pickled onions, the bbq beans have large chunks of meat and the smoked slaw has just the right amount of dressing on it - not swimming in mayo like other places. Inhale your food while trying to keep your table mates away from yours! Like the tables and chairs all the food served in comes in very cute mismatched dishes. Can I say I am a fan??? This was our first visit trying out anything with the Proletariat…read moreButchery. Needless to say, the last Friday of the month will be now on my calendar for Burger night. We arrived in the rain, it is November in Portland. So the first thing I noticed while waiting In the line outside in the rain, was everyone was super nice and asked if I had attended before. When I said no, folks said I would not be disappointed. Additionally, there was a nice older gentlemen who independently (on Halloween) was walking down the line and offering candy. Thanks for the mini snickers bite! We had a group of 7 of us last evening as we discussed "would this be worth it" as we slowly inched our way to the cashier to place our order. It is important to note, however, that while waiting in line the butcher shop walked the line (often starting at the end which was super considerate) offering slices of grilled sausages and probably some of the best toasted bread I have had. We made it - and placed our order for two burgers and potato salad. While waiting we checked out the shop - and while small, it is cozy and I can see why their classes and dinners draw in folks. They also had wine, beer and other items for sale to drink as well as a lovely self of bottles of wine. The BURGER!!! OMG - Heck yes!!!! Did I mention at the beginning I will be waiting in line on the last Friday of every month. I believe it was a brioche roll, garlic aoli, pickles and chopped onion with the best fresh, grilled on a fire hamburger patty I have had. Oh - and I am a total food snob. I can say this - those were big burgers and two of the guys in our group went back and ordered a second burger to eat. My husband also then raided their freezer for meats for us to bring home and prep ourselves. One of those was a beautiful Tomahawk and I cannot wait to cook it to perfection. I promise I will "not F it up." While I don't want the lines to get longer, I cannot deny my role as a Yelp Elite is to proactively share great experiences for others. So I kindly do this although this is one that I would prefer to keep a secret. Next up - I am signing up for classes!!! It's been a while since my time in CA where I learned to butcher a pig and make sausage. I saw that Proletariat Butchery offer bacon making classes. SCORE!!!

I expected a lot more diversity of products, in such an expansive space. I enjoy a lot of powdered drinks (Vietnamese Coffee, Thai Tea, etc). I've been to much, much smaller stores with a lot more selection from Asia... and they were completely out of Thai Basil when I went... low on cilantro, too. Plenty of Culantro, if I was willing to substitute. Their pricing is cheaper than H-Mart and some of the other Asian markets in the area. However, the true value here, which cannot be denied is the $5 Bahn Mi with iced Vietnamese coffee... Were I them, I would probably just run a value Bahn Mi shop, with lines back to Pioneer Station. So far, I've had the sausage /pork patty version and the Dac Biet. The pork patty is far superior to the Ham + Head Cheese version for my taste. It seems that most of the people in the area do NOT include pate on any of their sandwiches... I understand that is traditional, and in Orlando... pretty much ubiquitous. It makes little difference, as the value is excellent. The iced coffee is the star here... I noticed a bit of a mocha flavor when I had it the first time, but put it down to my lack of familiarity with Vietnamese coffee. The second time, I definitely tasted the addition of Hershey's Syrup. Absolutely worth a trip for lunch, and if you aren't looking a ton of variety, a pretty decent place for sauces and soup bases.

The price point is a little higher then some other CSAs but the bounty of high quality produce each week easily justifies the cost. This season I paid $540 for a half share; at 24 weeks (much longer then some CSAs!) it comes to $22.50/week. The return is around 10 different items per week. As an omnivore household of two, it is a lot of veggies to get through per week! This year the lettuces, cucumbers, and carrots have been remarkable. We've had some form of garlic and onion almost every week and have had beautiful dill, basil, and cilantro throughout the season. We are just now hunkering into juicy red tomatoes and sweet corn. 47th Avenue Farms has me covered on all my veg needs and makes it so my grocery store trips are quite minimal. The produce is fresh enough that nothing spoils within the week and , if I can't finish something one week, it is still good the next week too. At the weekly pick up, you bring in your own bags and pick out your share. Next to each item is a sign with the quantity you are supposed to take and you get to pick the stuff that looks good to you! Laura and her staff are around to chat with and they seem to do at least one farm party day each season. I appreciate the weekly recipe packet which is full of not only recipes, but also tidbits about how to prepare some of the less common veggies (I totally needed the help with the fava beans). The only thing this CSA is missing is the occasional fruit but with all of the farmers markets around Portland, I can still get what I need.

I have a half share...this season it costs $540, so it's a bit of a chunk to come up with. But wowie zowie!!!! it is worth every penny. And this season, Laura worked out a payment plan with me, so that the cost is spread out over time. Veggie pick up is every week in the Summer, and every other week in the Winter. Here is how they do it: A long table is set up under an awning. both sides of the table are decked with the same selection of boxes. Each of those boxes contains its own particular delicacy. We bring our own bags, and load 'em up. The quantity we are to take is posted on each box, and it works on the honor system. (I have only cheated once, and only by a little...OH! fingerling potatoes, you made a cheat out of me!!) Can you say FRESH? I first realized how UN-fresh grocery store vegetables are by the shelf-life of Laura's vegetables. Tonight I made some kale that I got from a pick-up 2 weeks ago. It is still crisp, dark green and very yummy. Another thing? She offers veggies I would never buy in the store. So along with your normal staples like broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, etc, you also get...Rutabaga? Celeriac? WTF is this shit? I'll tell ya what it is: IT'S FUN! I love trying new veggies I've never tried before, and lest you think those super-cute helpers behind the table are just there to reload the boxes, think again! They know a lot about the food being grown, including how to cook it. Did you know that parsnips are good thin-cut and fried? Neither did I. :) Oh, and I have a new love...something I've never seen in the store, they are long skinny, bright red and super sweet peppers. OH THE JOY!!! This place is a total win!
