The food was very good; the ground beef skewers were tender and spicy, the jasmine rice aromatic, the naan excellent, and the hummus flavorsome. However, we did have a bad experience with our food server, without going into the details, suffice to say he needs to be retrained on the basics of service and hospitality. Kabob House is a great choice, especially if you are in delivery mode. We ordered the samosa and the lamb biryani. Everything arrived on time and hot. There are three good size samosa to the order and they are accompanied by a mint chutney that has just the right combination of mint and coriander. The lamb biryani was a large portion (thank you for lunch tomorrow) and it was delicious. I appreciated the addition of potatoes and chickpeas which you often do not see in a biryani. Since the first time we dined at Kabob House, Shams and his family have made us feel like we were being welcomed into their home. The restaurant is the definition of family-run. His sisters are in the kitchen, his sons are working the register, his grandkids are sometimes doing homework at an open table. Shams was a family doctor in Afghanistan, so he quickly bonded with my father, who served with the Marines, and with my mother and me, who are both Health Care workers. When my father fell ill and was in the hospital, Shams visited him and brought him a meal. When Noel passed away, he mourned with us. Yesterday was my father's funeral, and we gathered at Shams' restaurant afterward for dinner. Kabob House is our go-to restaurant when entertaining friends from out of town, celebrating a new job, or when we're just in the mood for comfort food. Their rice is the best you'll taste anywhere, hands down. If you need vegetarian options, they have plenty; I personally recommend the Dahl and Mixed Vegetable Curry. If you need the meat, my favorites are the Kafta Chalow and Lamb Biryani. It's not on the menu anymore, but ask if they can make you some Mantoo. If you're feeding a large group, the family-style Kabob platters will serve *generous* portions. Get the garlic naan, you won't be disappointed. read more

Alhamdulilah!!! Biggest, hottest and freshest naan I've had anywhere. The hummus is seasoned perfectly and the atmosphere is totally authentic. Some people have complained about the service but I didn't have any problem. Fast and efficient. I think I should have gotten the lamb kabob instead of the rib kabob. The flavor was killer but it left me still hungry and wanting more. Needless to say I was totally let down by the rib kabob portions, especially after the naan gave me a false sense of reality. I came out to Boise from out of state to visit my brother's family and I wanted to try his favorite restaurants. Kabob house is a favorite and I could see why. If you're looking for something different with a fun-to-eat family-style atmosphere this is the place. We ordered sambosas, beef and chicken kabobs, chicken tiki masala, basmati rice, naan, cilantro chutney, and persian tea. Everything was delicious and we left no crumbs. The food isn't super spicy...so no worries there. Itjust right. The server was super friendly and made sure we always had what we needed. He even took photos of us and our food because my phone's photos weren't turning out that great. It wasn't very busy when we went on a Saturday which means you guys out in Boise need to try something new too. Most of the orders were okay, but the double tikka kabob of lamb we ordered, turned out to be dried pieces of beef, the size of one kabob, and no tikka flavors at all. What a rip off, and a shame because we order from them about once a month. Truly authentic and family owned! I've been to the Middle East twice for approximately 6 months each time. The food over there is rich in flavor and sends your tastebuds on a journey that few have ever experienced before. Being in Boise, I was skeptical that this city hosted the people who would be able to recreate these amazing dishes just as I remembered. THANK GOD THEY DID! This restaurant is phenomenal and authentic, from the atmosphere as you step through the door to the food that captures your tastebuds. I highly recommend this place! The service was great and friendly and the decor showed a lot of love and pride in their home country. If one was smart enough to understand brain surgery and was fluent in Dari, a language spoken in Afghanistan, one could have a detailed discussion on that topic with Shams, the owner of Kabob House. He is a physician and that was his area of specialty when he practiced medicine in Afghanistan before coming to the United States with his wife and children a few years ago. My understanding is the family's relocation was with assistance of an American General after Shams helped with military patients at Bagram AFB. It is lucky for us that while Dari is not a language my husband and I speak at all, English is a language Shams speaks well enough for us to be grateful to him for the hospitality he extends to his customers at Kabab House, which he purchased in mid 2018 I think. (Reviews and photos prior to that will be for the previous owner's time.) And before I share more about our dining experiences, I feel compelled to speak about a recent reviewer who was so critical of language obstacles as to leave a 1 star for that reason when she was twice advised by her host of the 20 minute time it took to grill kabobs she ordered for take out. Acknowledging language challenges exist and with respect for her right to hold an opinion, I wonder if she would have been so ungracious in review had she known the backstory. From our experience, thanks to Shams' effort to speak English and our wanting to listen to and speak with this charming man, we have enjoyed the food served in his restaurant and the hospitality of customers treated like family. For this physician in Afghanistan turned restaurant owner in the US and for this family business and for the food we say five stars in the context of the whole. A TRUE FAMILY BUSINESS: My husband and I are 'food explorers' (or in my case even food obsessed) and familiar with some cuisines of the Middle East like Lebanese, Israeli, Persian (Iranian) and Iraqi dishes. We are also familiar with the food of Pakistan which, like Iran, borders Afghanistan in Central Asia. But Kabob House has provided our introduction to Afghanistan food. All of the food here is cooked by Sham's wife and served to tables by him. In true family business style, his sons assist in the kitchen and with table service when they are out of school. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, imagine the hard work to make that happen. SPARKLING AND WELCOMING: Remembering that Shams' original profession was physician, it likely explains how sparkling clean is the restaurant. And it is welcoming for all people for seating at a combination of standard height tables and chairs, some traditional low upholstered seating booths, and a couple of standard height booths as well. There is no music sound system and we love that for being able to enjoy conversation with other diners and with Shams. WEEKDAY LUNCH BUFFET & MAIN MENU & FOOD: The previous owners of Kabob House had a lunch buffet and a couple of months ago Shams started offering one too. We enjoyed trying it once to acquaint us with something we had not seen on the main menu - a wonderful Afghanistan styled baked bean dish that I'll be sure to look for on the menu now - and delicious chicken tikka masala since chicken is not a protein we typically order. But our favorite way to eat here is to order from the menu which ranges from appetizers through salad and soup to kabobs and sides like basmati rice and naan and main dishes and desserts. Family platters are offered too. Kabob dishes may be the draw, given the restaurant name, but it is worth noting quobali polow (spelling?) which is recognized as a national dish of Afghanistan. There may be as many variations of this dish as there are cooks in Afghanistan, but in general it is lamb under a bed of basmati rice topped with carrots and raisins. At Kabob House the lamb is a large roasted shank and this is a dish that can easily feed two. (All animal proteins used at Kabob House are Halal.) Most cuisines have a 'savory turnover' in the repertoire (like samosas in Indian food or empanadas in Latin America) and the sambosas on this menu of savory pastry filled with potatoes and split peas are delicous. They came with a cilantro sauce alongside to use if you want to which is so good that my husband and I were tempted to drink it! Naan is excellent and it comes with the cilantro sauce alongside. The Persian tea served here is lovely in fragrance and flavor, made with whole green tea leaves and cardamom. One lunch time visit when we shared our sambosas with the couple at the next table, they ordered dessert for us of tiny little tender fried dumplings served in a small pool of perfect-barely sweet brothy syrup. Delightful. The rice pudding here, it has mango in it I think, is really good too. ACCESSIBILITY: ADA parking in private mall lot. Level in the door and all on one floor inside. Ample floor space. We stopped by Kabab House today and were blown away by the experience. The owner was incredibly warm and, upon finding out we're Pashtuns too, went above and beyond to make us feel at home. He treated us to Afghan Qahwa and a comforting dish of Red Kidney Beans -- all on the house! The food was fantastic, but the hospitality made it unforgettable. The food and service were amazing! This was our first time in, and we were greeted like we were family. We got a small cup of hot chai and small biscuits before our meal, that were great. My husband ordered the half lamb and half beef kabob which came with rice, a type of bean and chickpea dish to go over the rice, and a salad. I tried some and it was really good, just not my cup of tea. I ordered the chicken tikka masala which came with rice and garlic naan. This was the most tender chicken I've had in a long time, and the naan was massive, and soooo tasty! We also got the hummus, which is seriously to die for!
