After making the drive from Elko to Boise to visit with family, we decided to seek out one of our favorite cuisines. While many establishments in the area are shuttered on Sundays, Madhuban Indian Cuisine welcomed us with open doors and exceptional hospitality. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by a very friendly gentleman who seated us and took the time to explain the Punjabi-style traditions they celebrate through their menu. The Food: Tandoori Chicken: My husband opted for this classic, and it did not disappoint. Muttar Paneer: One of my personal favorites--perfectly prepared and flavorful. Naan: We both enjoyed a side of their delicious, fresh naan which tied the whole meal together. The Atmosphere & Service: While our meal was perfect, the evening provided a stark study in human character. The party of three at the table next to us--a mother, son, and daughter-in-law--seemed determined to find fault. They repeatedly berated the server regarding the spice levels of their food, despite having requested those specific levels themselves. The server remained remarkably calm and patient, even as the party made disparaging remarks about his English proficiency--a truly disconcerting display of entitlement. When the younger woman complained of the heat, the server kindly suggested a Mango Lassi to soothe the spice. She snapped back, "You said the food was not going to be spicy, so how should I trust you?" The height of irony came at the end of the night: after a meal spent complaining, the mother told the server, "Oh yes, we will come here many more times." Before we departed, we made sure to apologize to the server for the behavior of those around us. We stopped by for dinner on a Tuesday evening and luckily beat the rush since business picked up fast. The service was quick and friendly! The garlic naan was my favorite part of the meal -- it was warm, garlicky, and had the right bite. The rice portion was combined onto one plate, which was interesting since I'm used to separate plates/bowls for separate entrees. The spice here doesn't play, by the way! Inside out: the inside is a relaxed environment with nice decor and comfy ambiance. Service: it's up and down but never awful. Food: here is why nothing else matters, this food is divine! This is probably some of the best Indian food around, they have a very even reliable spice system and spice level five actually makes my nose water a little, which is saying something because most of the time when I order spicy, I don't get it. The flavors are still there. Everything is incredibly good quality and so fresh. All of their yogurt drinks are delicious. I cannot recommend the rose one enough! For my daughter's birthday weekend she requested Indian food (even though we had it the other night) for dinner so of course I said yes! So Madhuban was on tonight's dinner plans. The menu for us consists of butter chicken, aloo gobi and garlic naan. When Madhuban had their buffet for Covid, they always had a vegetarian dish that I always went back for seconds for. I loved how simple but flavorful this dish was! Well, I found it on their menu and ordered it tonight. Aloo Gobi is potatoes and cauliflower cooked in herbs and spices. It is so good! I can just eat this dish from here and be so happy. It's absolutely delicious! The butter chicken was rich in color and tasty. Paired with the basmati rice or garlic naan.... it's chef's kiss. It is a very small place that turns out really solid cuisine from India. I had the lamb vindaloo. I ordered it New York hot. It was delicious. Tender lamb. Great sauce. The next level heat (Bombay) would have been the wrong move for me. The dish came with generous portion of basmati rice. I added garlic Naan. Turned out to be the right move. I have been looking for a good Indian restaurant since moving here and 3.5 years later, I found it! The food was authentic and delicious. The service was attentive and gracious. We had to wait 10 minutes as it was packed and there is minimal seating but it wasn't that long and it was well worth it. The tandoori chicken is the best I have ever had and the butter chicken so rich and creamy. The naan bread is a perfect mix fluffy with crunchy outsides. Very good! I tried Madhuban tonight for the first time and got take out. The menu selection is great and I love that they have different types of naan to choose from. I was happy to find my order ready a few minutes before the scheduled pick up time - the man working was friendly and prompt. I got the samosa chaat which was not at all what I expected but very good flavor! I also got the chicken madrasi (level 3 spice) - also great but probably could have gotten even a little spicier. And finally garlic naan and coconut naan. 9.5/10 overall. I will definitely return and eat in next time. We have been avoiding this place, despite the good reviews and all the positive informal recommendations from friends and associates, simply because it's kind of out of the way for us, relative to the location where we live. I ordered my meal "Medium" hot, while my wife went with "New York" hot for hers. It can be difficult to leave a review for food when it is not your native culture. Have you ever actually had a "truly good" version of what you are ordering, or only mediocre tourist versions? I've had Lamb Vindaloo and other Indian dishes many times and many places across the US and Canada, and had Indians recommend many of the places I've dined as "their favorite", so feel that I have a reasonable understanding of great, good, and mediocre. This said, my lamb today was underwhelming but...maybe it was because they did not offer what I'd come for and it was a last second switch. I'd come for the Vegetarian Plate appetizer and a bowl of Lentil Soup, wanting to eat healthier today. "We don't offer Lentil Soup." I've never been to an Indian restaurant that didn't offer lentil soup, I thought it was a staple? The lamb was on the overcooked side and had a vaguely mineral taste, similar to beef liver, that came through the otherwise good vindaloo sauce. The rice seemed either old or under cooked, lacking any surface moisture, as if it had been prepared then sat uncovered for a while. As I sat trying to enjoy my lamb, far and away my favorite meat, I was disappointed, this wasn't what I was after today. Would I return?. I know I enjoy indian food from the frozen and prepackaged meals I would get at the grocery store but never had the time to visit a restaurant in person. Well today was the day and I am happy to say i am not disappointed. I was here for the lunch buffet and was greeted by a friendly waiter who dressed very professionally. This review is only for their lunch buffet. I hope to be back for their full dinner menu, because lunch was delicious. I arrived around 12:00 on a Sunday and the restaurant was packed! That's always a good sign. I wanted food to go and the kind waiter quickly brought me a to-go box, ordered some fresh Naan for me and sent me to the buffet. I LOADED it down. :) We tried the fruit salad, the mint, coconut and spicy chutneys, Tandoori chicken, basmati rice, vegggie samosas, lamb stew, and this sweet fried ball of dough (name?). I had "Hungry" (4 yrs old) and "Hurricane" (1 yr old) with me and they devoured everything. We loved putting the different chutneys on different foods. Of course, our most favorite thing was the fresh, steamy, garlic-y naan bread. I love carbs of any variety, but fresh naan bread is up there with holiness.
