Left Durango 20 years ago and I still crave a Navajo taco from here. Need to get back soon.

Not impressed with the food at all. I had the kachina burrito which was supposed to be ground beef, refried beans, covered in nacho cheese sauce, green chile with lettuce and tomato. It was basically a bean burrito with a teaspoon of ground beef sprinkled in it. My husband had the fajita salad - 3 tiny pieces of chicken and beef, no peppers or onions which you expect in fajitas, mostly lettuce, tomato and a lot of watered down guacamole. Real fry bread. Very friendly family oriented place. Atmosphere is casual. The ladies were very sweet.

Great little place. Staff is very friendly. The hot green Chile is very very hot and i love it. Inexpensive. The green chili would be the bomb if the would cook with pork, garlic and onion but i like it. Tacos are great also read more

My husband and I enjoyed the Navajo Taco. It was served hot. Just wish it had more meat in it. The diner was clean. Would it here again.

It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. I came here because it was close to where I had an appointment. I had missed both breakfast and lunch and so I figured I would get something quick. I saw Kachina Kitchen, and decided to give it a try. The service was friendly and quick. The place is a quiet place with many booths. I tried the Navajo taco and an order of fries. I loved the shoestring fries but the Navajo taco wasn't the best. It looked like it was going to be delicious but I feel it was a bit bland on the flavor. It wasn't horrible but really needs more spices. This is an okay place. Maybe their other plates will be better. read more

Definitely I agree with the other poster who says to ignore their reviews from several years ago. Ordered three Carne out of Ada Navajo tacos tonight and they were fantastic. Realize that this is kind of a hole in the wall kind of Mexican diner so it's not like every ingredient is top notch. For instance the cheese is nacho cheese like you get at a movie theater but it was still delicious and we really enjoyed them and the auto Votto was flavorful and spicy. How can you screw up a chicken cheese quesadilla? No seasoning and frankly tasted like the did it in the microwave. Cheese was rubbery and chicken was beyond bland tortilla wasn't crispy. I will not be back! Counter guy was super nice but they even charged 1.29 for the salsa shouldn't that be included. Music was so loud we couldn't talk to each other. read more

Very disappointing. Definitely was not true Navajo frybread. Tasted and looked like sopapilla dough. I watched then "make" bread. The Navajo taco had tasteless beans with meat. The beans were so watered down that the sopapilla was soaked in it. It was smothered with a mound of lettuce. Probably to hide fake Navajo frybread. There was only a spoonful of tomatoes on top of the mountain of lettuce. I'm Navajo and I wish they would not use the name "Navajo." Any Navajo who made frybread like this would be made fun of and firced to learn again. I took my non-Navajo friend here and felt truly embarrassed. Please rename your Navajo Taco to just Frybread taco and your Navajo frybread to just frybread. That way people expecting true Navajo taco and Navajo frybread won't be disappointed. read more

Just had a late lunch there today - their special, which was a green chili smothered hamburger on a tortilla with fries and a drink. It was great - and I'm a hard please with green chili burgers. Definitely will be going back. read more

Had lunch here today after my interview that (I think) went well. Anyways, they serve Mexican and Indian food, and FRY BREAD (gah!) so of course I had to go for the Navajo taco. E got the same thing, which is odd because he and I both have a phobia of ordering the same thing to eat (I think because we want to sample each others'). The taco was good, although I'm a strong believer that anything involving fry bread, or sopapillas for that matter, is a culinary delight. The place is pretty utilitarian, with awesome plastic silverware that looks like it's made out of metal. E and I stuffed ourselves on Navajo tacos and taquitos for under $20. Yay! The place was crowded. People liked it. It didn't work for me. The food was bland and not interesting. A couple of days earlier we were at the Mesa Verde National park and the Navajo Taco at the concession was much better. It was also larger and only a $1 more. These people should be able to produce a Navajo Taco at least as good as Aramark food services. read more

I had the burrito plate.. The WORST "Mexican Food" I ever had.. the rice was over cooked, beans simple and no flavor at all. Meat in the burrito just ground beef nothing especial. Salsa tasted like canned salsa... I didn't finish my food. BAD. read more

If you've ever had institutional rice and beans (tastes like cardboard), that's what this place tastes like. Neveerrrr going back.

They get an extra star just for having fry bread. I did a search on Yelp* for fry bread, and this was the only place within 40 miles. If I were the chef and wanted to rethink the Navajo tacos, there would be more (is there any?) seasoning in the ground beef and the refried beans would be slowly cooked with onions. I'd recommend staying away from the burritos and tacos and sticking with the stews and other items with fry bread. In fact, while were were eating there, every customer that came in ordered a Navajo taco. read more

I can't help to wonder to whether these negative reviews are authentic or factual as I have been coming to Durango on Business once or twice a month for over two years and every time I eat at Kachina Kitchen The Food is very tasteful and very fresh and I have always found the employees to be very helpful . The food tasted like cheap carnival fare. It was highly processed and tasteless. We went on a local's recommendation and were disappointed.

The staff was friendly and it's cheap but that is about the only good thing I can say about this place. My beef burrito was filled with slimy flavorless ground beef, the guacamole had to be from a can. It was one of the worst meals I have ever eaten. I have had better food in hospital cafeterias. This used to be a great favorite. The joint has been in Durango for 30 yrs. The food WAS great! But, now there is new management, plus evidently Fred didn't leave his recipes, this place is CRAP!!! If I could give it less than 1 star, I would. The food is horrid, the service is non-existent, & now it's dirty & smells! Fred come back!!!! A lot of people miss you!!! read more

I had the stuffed sopapilla and my husband had the big burrito. The green spicy sauce on the sopapilla was delicious along with the rest of it. Everything looked clean and it smelled good when we walked in. Prices are very reasonable and service was friendly. The location is hard to miss but it is worth a try. read more

Drive across the street and go to Zia. I should have read other reviews first. Stale chips. Chicken looked like it came out of a can and the salsa tasted like it was a can of diced tomatoes mixed with onions. Tables were dirty. Not impressed. read more

One of the worst restaurants I've ever eaten at. With so many good choices in Durango avoid this establishment at all costs.

While I may go to restaurants with food that I don't care for every now and then, it's very rare that I visit somewhere where I straight up dislike the food. Unfortunately, the food here is just terrible. For starters, everything was served on Styrofoam plates with plastic cutlery. As for what was on the plates, the burrito was way below par whereas the beans and rice were legitimately inedible. I'd have a hard time believing a single thing on my plate didn't come out of a can. The only good thing I can say about this place is that the guy at the counter worked hard to accommodate our very large group and was apologetic for the mistakes in our order and worked to resolve them. I can't say that his partner in the kitchen displayed the same level of care though. He clearly just didn't care. I really don't feel good trashing a place like this but unfortunately the food I had here was bar none the worst I've ever eaten. read more

I love Kachina Kitchen. Sometimes at lunch, you can expect a bit of a wait. Enjoy the paintings by a Navajo artist on the back wall - not something you see in every fast food mexican restaurant. The food reminds me of home and the prices are reasonable. You can see that they cook their beans and make their own sopapillas and fry bread. I prefer the Navajo Taco Jr. with hot green on the side. There are plenty of other good options, though. Authentic and fast - I love it! Oh, and the coke in the coke machine has the best blend of syrup and carbonation I have ever had. read more
