Hidden gem! Located on Whyte Avenue. This Thai restaurant is a must try. It does have the option of dine-in, but it's quite warm inside. I ordered the tofu pad Thai, salad rolls, and the red curry with coconut rice. The service was prompt and courteous. The food was cooked right there fresh. The meal was delicious, great quality and flavors. Pad Thai could have used some lime and cilantro. The red curry, though, was perfect. The spiciness level was very good but gotta be careful. Kaengthai Bistro is my FAVOURITE restaurant for authentic Thai food in Edmonton. I've been here multiple times and am going to continue to come here. The staff is always super friendly and attentive. They do regular water refills without you even asking! They let you customize the amount of spiciness (level 1-5) which is nice and they also let you choose the protein you want! If you're vegan or vegetarian, they have a tofu option. The curries and soups definitely shine here. The green curry is phenomenal- not too sweet and just the right amount of coconut. If you're here, you must get it! I like getting mine with level 5 spiciness, tastes just like the one in Thailand. The Tom kha soup has a nice hot and sour flavour to it that isn't too overwhelming. It has mushrooms and galanghal and the galanghal flavour hits fast. The pad thai isn't your typical westernized Thai Express pad thai. It doesn't have a super sweet ketchup-like sauce and is delicious! The flavour is more mild as pad thai usually is but that's what makes it perfect. The chicken satay was a little bit dry but pairs perfectly with the housemade peanut sauce! I really enjoy the spices they use in the chicken and I would order this over and over again. If you're ever thinking of trying some Thai food, Kaengthai is definitely an option when it comes to authentic fare. Get the green curry!! read more

When you first walk in, you kinda notice that it is not your typical restaurant. On the wall on the left is the menu ( great choices of dishes and you can select your spice level from 1-5 ).. There is no waitress or hostess per se.. it's kinda like fast food service but with freshly high quality food. Once you placed your order , find a table and have a seat . It does not take long to get your food.. it's fast and hot. We had a starter of calamari ( lightly breaded and perfectly cooked ) and chicken satay ( kinda dry but it was tasty ). My friend ordered the soup ( Tom Kha ) and I ordered the Pad Thai. We were just finishing our appetizers when the entrees arrived.. it was piping hot. We had to let it sit for a few minutes to cool down. The serving size for the soup was perfect.. my pad thai dish could have been a bit more loaded. Dont get me wrong.. the food was absolutely delicious. This was our second visit . so they are definitely doing something right. It is kinda odd though that each time we have gone, we were the only ones in there.. but we did see a few SKIP THE DISHES drivers come in for orders. When you open the door to this cosy mom and pop Thai place, you're greeted by the inviting aroma of sweet nutty rice cooking. Order and pay at the counter, then find your own table. Staff are pleasant, attentive, and generous with the smiles. I tried the Pad Sweet Basil for a main, and veggie spring rolls for an appetizer. The spring rolls were tasty--crispy, cabbagey, and served piping hot. The stir fry was also on point--strong on the basil with fresh veggies. Note that rice is conveniently included with the main (as opposed to an extra charge). A fellow diner's pad thai was also fantastic, not the overly sweet ketchup-heavy version of the dish that can sometimes pop up in other restaurants. Tucked away past the hustle and bustle of Whyte Ave, Kaengthai Bistro is worth the walk east, just past the Strathcona tracks. The decor and menu is straightforward and simple, but the food more than makes up for it. It's a bit of a mix between a take out and sit down restaurant. You order at the counter (menus plastered on the wall with pictures!) but the waitress/owner will bring out a pot of tea and your dishes so pick a table/booth to sit at while you wait. The sign outside advertised a few of their dishes. Their prices are pretty reasonable, ranging from $5.95 to $12.95 for a dish. I was actually impressed by the presentation of their dishes - clean, minimalist look but with an attention to detail you don't normally see in Thai eateries. - Tom kha with shrimp ($7.95) - spicy and sour coconut soup with mushrooms, tomatoes, galangal, lemongrass, lime leaves, cilantro and dry chilies. Fresh, lacking spice but you really get the sour element in this tom kha. A nice alternative to the typical tom yum soup you always seem to see. - Pad kea mao with chicken ($10.95) - rice noodles fried with fresh peppers, bamboo shoots, baby corn, onion, bell peppers, lime leaves, Kra Chai and basil leaves. This one is level 2 on the spice chart and it actually had a good kick to it. My friend was drinking, no more like guzzling water down. Tasty but there could have been more noodles. - Pad num prik pow with pork ($10.95) - stir fried sweet chili paste with mushroom, bell peppers, baby corn, carrots and onion. Comes with a bowl of steamed jasmine rice. The chili paste sauce was sweet, everything tasted fresh and the rice was nice and fluffy. Here's a tip: make sure you tell them what spice level you want (from 1 (mild) to 5 (welcome to Thailand)). I will have to try level 5 next time, just for research purposes. Quaint, homey little Thai place. Why not check it out if you're in the area? Even easier if you're there to play some board games at The Hex Cafe. Just pop across the street to Kaenthai Bistro to get some good eats. read more

I had the pad num prik chow with beef and jasmine rice level 1 spice this time just for something different than my usual chicken pad Thai. The dish was sweet but not coconut flavoured as so many are here. The place has a casual but clean vibe and service is good aside from the counter ordering system. Friendly staff have been there to help when needed. I think I'll ask go for level2 or3 spice next time. I'll definitely go back. The prices are reasonable and the food is reliable. read more

I quite like this place. Really small, maybe fits about 16 people, clean decor but I probably wouldn't bring someone here on a first date...not much for ambiance. You order first from the menu on the wall (there's a few extras there that aren't on the takeout menu), choosing your protein (chicken, pork, beef, tofu, or shrimp), and then pay and sit down. Kind of like Famoso's. Don't forget to specify the spice level otherwise the default is mild. There are 5 levels and the third, 'hot', was good for me though inconsistently applied - in my noodles it was perfect, spicy on the edge of too much (I have reasonably good tolerance for spice), but the second time in a takeout stirfry, it was more like level 2. Really amazing prices so it's a great take-out option. Everything I've tried is good but not great - it is not as good as places like Viphalay or Sukhothai but those places are also a lot more expensive. The curries and stir-fries come with jasmine rice; don't think there is a coconut rice option. Had the tom kha dine-in and take out and it was delicious, fragrant from the lemongrass and creamy coconut milk, with a good amount of veggies and aromatics. However it seems like you don't get as much when ordering it as takeout. The pad kea meo noodles were excellent - lots and lots of veggies like carrots, bamboo shoots, baby corn, and meat. My friend's #16, pad kra thiam prik thai, which was supposed to be a stir fry with black pepper and cilantro, was completed devoid of the latter, and there was barely any of the former. She said it was good but it just wasn't what she was expecting. Pad thai (take out) was on the dry side. The chicken they use is white meat and also a bit dried out both times. I'm a big fan of the pork - it went especially well in #12 pad cashew nut. Dine-in service was weird in that two of us got our meals (in a slightly longer-than-average wait) and the third had to wait another 10 minutes or so. read more

Ordered the coconut spicy soup and chicken pad Thai. Both tastes great! Have to go to the counter yourself and place your order and pay in advance. Then you can sit down and wait for food to be brought to your table. The spice ranking is interesting! Ordered "close to Thailand" spiciness and it really gives you the spicy that you would get in Asia! Loved, loved this freaking place! I was with a friend shopping and she suggested we eat here, I have never been but I do love spicy food! Wow, was I pleasantly amazed! The owner subbed my rice for vermicelli noodles as he heard me say I was craving noodles.....ah, I love people like that. Noodles and spice and everything nice.....Mmmm, it was divine! My friend had the coconut soup which smelt as good as it tasted, she let me sneak a taste. I honestly can't wait to go back here with my husband as I know he will adore it as much as I did. We had dinner here a couple days ago. I really liked my Thai iced tea and Tom Kha soup. Unfortunately, my entree was TOO SALTY. There was all of this salty brown sauce poured on top of it and it just ruined everything. I couldn't even finish my food. My husband said his food was SALTY too but he ate all of his because he said he was hungry. I might come here to eat again. I MIGHT. I just don't tolerate salty food that well. I'd give this place 6 stars if I could. Best dinner on my recent three-night trip to Edmonton, and it was all of $9.50. Basil (kra-pow) pork, 4 star hot. PERFECT complement of heat and salty goodness that kra-pow should be. Almost no cheap veg filler other restaurants use, just a few strips of well-cooked bell pepper. With a nice base of jasmine rice, this was absolutely, completely delicious, and cheap to boot. If I lived in Edmonton I'd be here weekly. No AC and zero ambiance, order at counter, but I'd sit on the ground and eat with my hands if I could enjoy this dish. read more

Love this place! The owners are super friendly and the food is fresh with delicious flavors. They have a five step spiciness scale from 'mild' to 'welcome to Thailand '. :) Medium for me has the right amount of heat. I've done takeout there 3 times in the last year. The menu is small, just 17 items in total. Everything is tasty, fresh and flavourful. Service is polite and prompt. My only complaint is the portion size. They're small and really CHINTZY with the protein. When you order Shrimp Curry or Shrimp Pad Thai you get just 5 Shrimps for $13. There should be AT LEAST 6 or 8 in an order. When we go out to Asian restos we order one dish per person and share. But how do you share 5 shrimps when you're out with 3 or 4 people? For that reason, I wouldn't dine there in a group. You'd have to order too many dishes to be sated. read more

Based on my prior reviews, you may notice that I am a witch of extremes. Visiting Kaengthai Bistro this wickedly cold evening, I knew that I needed something of intense heat. The Bistro has a complete menu with reasonable prices in the $10-$12 range and beside each item there are hot peppers which indicate the spice level. The patron can choose the distance they wi(tch)sh to venture from Kanata. Without question, I wanted to visit Thailand! Therefore, I made my hot pepper selection a 5! Seeing as how I was ordering "broom through", I had to wait while the cuisine was being prepared. The chef popped his head out from the kitchen and asked if it was I who had asked to be whisked away to Thailand. "Of course, i said" in a cackle like tone. He went back to work. Then again five minutes later he proclaimed that, "today you will only go to south Thailand, and next time I will take you to the north!" Seeing as how I am from the west, i had no problem shifting geographies. Alas, the food came and I ate. I ate my food and it was amazing! Without question, i will return and I will go NORTH. Winter may be here, but a trip to Thailand is just down the street. read more
