Bangkok is a hidden AYCE hotpot off Kingsway. (Truly, if we didn't know to look for it, I'd never know it was there. It's tucked away on a side road surrounded by residential streets!) But there it was, this bright green little gem. It's not as modern as other places, but the food was fresh and topped up on the buffet + even though not as big as others, there were still a few items I hadn't seen anywhere else. Their broth was good too - we tried the satay & tom yum and both were flavourful. They've been open under the same management for 11+ years! Covid has been tough - they closed completely when dine in was shut down and are just starting to rebuild business (I don't think they do take out but I'm not 100%). It was completely dead when we were there, minus one other table - and they still kept filling the food with fresh items. They kind of fall under the radar, maybe because they're not as flashy as other places? But they are yummy with super nice people - if you're considering hotpot, it's worth checking out! A few things to note: it's one of the cheaper AYCE hotpots in the city (I think it was $26 + $2 for broth - other places are $35-40). AYCE only. My favourite restaurant for hot pot! Definitely a gem in the city. I love the satay broth and all the many options of fish balls and an excellent variety of fresh meats and veggies. In the sauce department the xo and peanut butter sauce is amazing and the chopped chillies in a vinegar like sauce is soo delicious and brings such great flavour to anything that accompanies it. I absolutely love it here, it really has a nice welcoming environment and the manager is very nice as well. I always look forward to my next visit. read more

I've been going here for years. There are a few hot pot restaurants in edmonton, some have lots of selection, some hate some hot foods. But none of them have the quality of food this place has, I always know exactly what to expect and the broth is just amazing. I always bring friends here for their first hot pot experience, and they always leave full and happy, and we always have fun talking and eating. They always have something new to try. U can try other hot places, and they are okay, but this place feels like home. They are always friendly and the prices are good. I have to keep it a secrete when I go here, because people get upset I didn't invite them sometimes... Its become a sort of tradition. Do not let the outside of this place fool you. Though it isn't 100% top notch inside it is clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. I often shy away from hot pot places because I am overwhelmed with the quantity of food that I am expected to eat. Expected is probably a little harsh, but just go with it. I liked this place because it is individual which isn't unique on its own, but my favourite part is the buffet. They have 4 broths to choose from. You get your own veggies, meats, fish, noodles, etc. in the exact amounts you want. And obviously as much as you want being that is how buffets work. There is lots of sauces and even rice if you want it! Just don't waste any food as there is a charge extra for it. read more

I wanted to love this place a lot more than I did. It's a very authentic hot pot buffet, in that it has many ingredients such as fish heads that you may not find on a more western influenced place, but sadly the service isn't great. We called ahead for a booking for 9 people, they said that's fine and did not take our name or time we would be arriving, so we figured they really would be able to fit us with no issues. However wen we arrived the largest table was for 9 people, and they had to squeeze one of our guests in between other peoples pots and put a large gas powered camp style burner in front of him. Like the ones you buy from bass pro shop. This seems a little unsafe, and a short person would definitely not be able to see what was going on in the pot, our guy who got the short stick and had the camp pot was 6 foot 4 and even he couldn't see what he was cooking. My other complaint was that the service was exceptionally slow, and they had no vegetarian soup bases, and half our party was vegetarian. So the chef said he would make us all a special batch of soup and we all agreed on satay, he brought out Tom yum. Ok, I appreciate that he went out of his way but 1, why ask what flavour if you are going to make something completely different anyway, and 2 it's restaurant suicide in this day and age to not offer a vegetarian option. Other than that the service was very slow on the drinks, several of our guests had to leave the table to go get beverages themselves after waiting for quite a while. This place has nice food, and is very authentic, but I would recommend other places in the city over it if you are only going to visit one hot pot place. read more

Visited this delightful little gem for my first hot pot experience last night and am thoroughly impressed! The restaurant was bright and clean and the staff (owner?) was very helpful and really nice. They didn't bother us, but were there if we had any questions. I really liked that each person got their own individual broth pot- this way, we didn't all have to try and come to a decision on the same one (I opted for the Tom Yum)! Same thing with our food choices... they offer up a bevy veggies, meats, seafood, etc. It was a tough thing trying to figure out where to start. Everything I tried was delicious and cooked perfectly by the broth. When it was time for dessert, I wasn't sure I would like any of the traditional dessert choices, but I did! Pleasant surprise, that. It's located in a residential area, but is easy to get to and the parking was decent. It would have been 5 stars if it was a little cheaper. I know, I know, it's a buffet. And we definitely left full. But on my budget I can't justify $25 for just my food on a regular basis... I will return for special occasions though! Had a blast with the girls and left completely satisfied with my hot pot experience. It's perfect for those chilly evenings when you just want something warm. Bangkok is one of those restaurants that, if you didnt know about it, you would never discover it. And that would be a terrible shame, because it's got some of the best hot-pot in town. While it's name indicates Thai cuisine, I would say it's an all-around general Asian restaurant. Bangkok's specialty is hot-pot, which is not exclusively a Thai tradition, I don't think. I used to live near this restaurant; it was practically in my backyard. Bangkok is located in a residential area, not on a main street, so it's hard to spot. It's exterior looks pretty no-frills too, which makes it even harder to find. I wouldn't be surprised if passers-by thought it was an abandoned garage. But don't let it's outward appearance deter you from trying it. For those of you who aren't familiar with hot-pot, it's basically where you get this big pot of water on your own portable stove at your table, and dunk whatever you want to eat into the pot so it cooks. It's kind of like a buffet and DIY cooking. Well, when I put it that way it doesn't sound great, but it is, and it's fun. They have a buffet table of raw food that you can choose from. You just heap your plates full of stuff you want, take it back to your table and cook it in your pot. You can leave your food in the pot for as long as you want, depending on whether you like things kind of rare or fully cooked. The buffet includes a variety of rice noodles, Asian vegetables, meats, and seafood. The rate you pay is similar to that of a buffet, a flat fare for as much food as you can eat. So the more you eat, the better the deal. They're open late nights on weekends, something to keep in mind if you find yourself looking for something new one weekend. It's fun to come here with a group of friends, and dunk as you chat. It's an experience that should be tried at least once! read more

UPDATE: Thanks to Chili Hot Pot and Urban Shabu's awesomeness, I'd like to amend my previous statement and say that Bangkok Restaurant is one of my top 3 hot pot places in the city. Their satay soup is still amazing. ------------------------------ This is my absolutely favourite hot pot restaurant in Edmonton. Their satay soup is TO DIE FOR. Bangkok Restaurant is slightly different from other hot pot restaurants because all food items are served buffet-style. That is, everything is kept in an open cooler, which is restocked regularly, allowing customers to approach the buffet and select what they want, when they want it. You can take the whole pan of sliced beef, if you're so inclined - just be careful that you eat it all, otherwise you might get stuck with the 'wasted food charge.' Emi and I went at 5 pm on a Thursday and the restaurant was completely empty, except for one other gentleman. That, added to the fact that the restaurant is hidden deep in the Kingsway residential area, made us a little sceptical at first. It didn't take us long, though, to realize that this restaurant, despite appearances, was just as good (if not better) than the other popular hot pot hot-spots. Bangkok Restaurant is run by a husband and wife, who took over from the previous owners approximately three and a half years ago. They were very friendly and extremely accommodating, making no qualms about bringing fresh soup and hoisin sauce out to ensure that Emi's nut allergy wouldn't be an issue (unlike me, when I accidentally splashed her with my satay soup...oops!). There's nothing wrong with the service at King's or Asian Express, but the service at Bangkok Restaurant clearly outdoes the other two. As for the food, did the buffet style live up to its cart-driven competitors? In a word: yes. While the buffet set-up limits the offerings to only the most popular items, the restaurant still offered a great selection of fresh, high quality foods. Both Emi and I agreed that the food quality at Bangkok Restaurant was superior to other hot pot places - the beef was extremely lean, the shiitake mushrooms incredibly juicy, and the fish/shrimp/lobster/pork balls plentiful and very well-made. They offer two kinds of soup broth: chicken and spicy satay coconut (the best broth I've tried yet). The restaurant also includes dessert in their hot pot price, offering items such as grass jelly, coconut jelly, corn tapioca pudding, basil seeds, and red beans, all of which are typical Chinese desserts. I enjoy going to hot pot restaurants. I like this one because all of the food is served in a buffet. I can choose as little or as much as I want. Other hot pots I've gone too bring out way to much food, so it's nice that here I can keep a better eye on my portions. There are five broths you can choose, all of them Thai, but the food at the buffet is pretty much similar to the foods at other hot pots (ie: shrimp balls, crab balls, shrimp, bok choy, pot stickers, lamb, chicken, etc). The dessert selection is also served in buffet style. I sampled three of the 6 desserts and I did not enjoy it all all. It was either bland (even with added coconut milk and liquid sugar) or just straight up looked unappetizing and made me lose my sweet tooth right away. As for customer service, it was okay but we had to ask for water when it should've been brought out as soon as we sat down. I would definitely come here again for the hot pot because the food was delicious but I would definitely skip the dessert. read more

I am going to rate this a 4 for now, because I am a fan, and I will be back. It's located in a tiny little strip mall in the middle of no-where! I had no idea it was even there, and it's right in my neighborhood. It's a one price, "all you can eat" kind of affair. It is the cleanest restaurant I think I have ever seen! Obviously family run. You are very well taken care of here. My Dad tells me that they have the best selection of items here. We tried two different kind of broths; the Tom Yum and the Satay. Both were very good. Its' kind of up to you after that... There are plenty of meats, vegetables and noodles to choose from. The tables are very cool! They have a sunken recess where your "soup" is put to simmer. Bright and cheerful lime green! There is a 2 hour maximum stay for your dining experience. There is parking located right out front, and on the street. We came when it was relatively quiet. They are open quite late. I am sure it could be very noisy when it is busy. Everyone else in the place looked like they were really enjoying themselves as well. read more

I was concerned as we drove up. An old strip mall. Parked car with a tarp on it out front. Old sign. My husband is always looking for the "diamond in the rough" restaurant. This was it for sure! The frozen buffet is so food safe and full of variety. A carnivoire and vegetarian could both easily fill up. The broth is AMAZINGLY tasty and beats out any Pho I have ever had. The restaurant was clean and tidy. The tables had set in induction burners so everyone had their own individual pot of broth that wouldn't spill. You could control the temperature of your own burner. The staff were super helpful and full of passion for their restaurant. We will be back for sure... and we're bringing our foodie child. read more

This was such a fun experience. Our first time going to this restaurant. We live downtown- and whenever we drive through the neighbourhood the hot pot sign has always caught my eye. Upon entering we were greeted by a very nice gentleman who explained the concept, offered to show us the food, and made broth suggestions. My Husband had the classic chicken broth and I chose the Tom Yum. My broth consisted of tomato slices, lemongrass, and I think bay leaves? Along with other delicious spices. We went over to the main station and chose from fresh spinach, bok and suey choy, broccoli and shiitake mushrooms along others. The noodles were plentiful and included the rice, glass, thicker noodles, Shanghai, and wontons. The proteins were amazing. Beef, lamb, salmon, chicken, maki, organ meats, squid, and then the very yummy fish, shrimp, squid, lobster and a variety of other balls. This was a fun experience cooking our food and expert levelling with chopsticks. The dessert was super interesting. We tried the grass jelly, some green jelly, and mango rice pudding with liquid sugar and coconut milk. Overall very clean and bright atmosphere inside. Everything was spotless and our hot pot stations worked well. I could not believe this place wasn't busier when we went! I think it all comes down to their location (quiet and low traffic). Came back to this restaurant because we were really craving hot pot and their yummy dessert. After eating our food, I ended up leaving 2 shrimp on my plate and I proceeded to grabbing dessert. The owner grabbed my plate and approached me at the dessert station to let me know that it was a waste that I couldn't finish the shrimp and that he was going to charge me a minimum of $5. There is sign saying this but it was mainly the way he approached me and his tone of voice that I considered disrespectful. I told the gentleman to leave the shrimp at our table that I would finish them but he didn't and ended up not charging me the $5. either way, that was very unprofessional on his part and all he gained with that was no tip. we didn't get water until we asked and never got refills, the hot pot prices went up and the dessert wasn't as good as the first time. so my advice is if you want good hot pot then yes it is yummy but make sure you eat absolutely everything because if not I'm sure you will have the same experience. read more

This hot pot place has been around for ages but had recently undergone Reno's. The place looks a lot better than before! They now do single pots which is so much better than the communal style in the past. They still do the buffet set up, where you help yourself to the food and dessert, which is nice, no need to wait for the waiter to get your food. The price is a lot more than in the past - now it cost $24.00 for dinner buffet (used to be like $15 back in the day but that was ages ago), however, note the broth actually costs an additional $1.00 so In actuality the dinner is $25.00. I don't know anyone who would choose boiling water to cook their food... so it's kind of silly to say broth cost additional $1. We tried the Satay broth and it was really good! Actually better than most broth in other hot pot places- super flavorful and not watered down like most places. I'd recommend it! The food selection is def less than other hot pot places in the city, and they do not offer any cooked items other than the dessert. Overall, try this place if you want to spend a few dollars less and enjoy the self serve style but know that it will have reduced selection. This is my Neighbour's Family Restaurant. We dined there in the winter and are going back tonight. Do not let this location or the outside fool you. I grew up in Vancouver BC and have eaten all kinds of different hot pot. This restaurant ranks in my top 3 of Hot Pot experiences ever. They have an honour system that they will allow you to take what you want provided you don't waste it. Unlike other places where someone is giving you minimum ingredients to make your hot pot from behind the counter, this is truly all you can eat. Friendly staff, top notch ingredients. I'm Celiac so the fact that I can go and not worry about not having the essential noodles, they've got that covered with rice noodles. Everything is fresh. Recommend any of the broths. If you like spice get the Tom Yum and add the homemade sauces to your customized dish. What makes it is green onion or cilantro. Ice cream for dessert if you've even got room. A true hidden gem in Edmonton! The spicy broth is a one of a kind. You can not find that broth in any other hot pot restaurant in the city. The restaurant is a buffet style which I prefer over a la carte because you can see for yourself what you want in your soup. Sometimes I find that with a la carte, you accidentally order things that you thought was something else. The owner is very welcoming to everyone that comes into his restaurant. He really takes pride in his business which shows because the place is always pristine when we come in. The location is usually fairly quiet in comparison to other hot pot places which is nice because it allows you to be able to socialize properly with your loved ones. There have been a few occasions where It was abnormally busy but we waited no longer then 5 minutes at the door before he could clear out a table for us. I've tried every single hot pot place in the city and I have to say that this is hands down the best place to have hot pot. The prices are extremely reasonable. It's all you can eat and you finish your entire pot because the broth is just too damn good to not finish. The spicy broth is a MUST TRY! Honestly, check this place out.
