The Pad Thai was gluey noodles with some lettuce on the side. Authentic spicy Malaysian food. Great for large groups. Must eat family style to enjoy this place. Large restaurant. No reservations required as it has lots of tables. Expensive. This is my go to restaurant for spicy Malaysian food. The food is the closest to Malaysian food I have ever encountered in Edmonton. It is not as spicy as Malaysia but it comes pretty darn close. Due to this authenticity the prices are high here and people will pay the prices for the dishes. Expect a dinner for 2 to cost at least $50. This is why it is best to enjoy this restaurant with a group because the cost goes significantly down and most of the dishes are large enough to eat family style. The most popular dishes by far I have seen as staples at this restaurant is the roti canai (pan fried bread), chicken skewers with peanut sauce and the tropika home style chicken. These dishes will not disappoint and I order them every time I visit. The chicken is unique and crisp with a sweet spicy spice on them. The chicken skewers are perfectly delicious and the peanut sauce is done authentically. The roti canai is addictive and delicious. It always is gone very quick and is served with a spicy broth similar to laksa. But my ultimate favorite dishes are the large jumbo prawns and the spicy crab. These dishes are both seasonal prices but they are the best dishes they offer. If you are celebrating or will to splurge these are definitely a must order. I actually come to Tropika for these two dishes. If you must order rice the tropika fried rice is deliciously sweet with some pineapples thrown into their special fried rice. All the food served is outstanding and the portions are large. Every dish is good for 4 people. Service is hit and miss but its always good enough. It can get really slow when its busy but they can really use a few more servers to resolve this. Definitely worth a try if you have not been here before and it is my go to for a spicy meal. Not one bad word to say about the delicious food and the most amazing friendly staff.

We were missing our fix of mee goreng (fried noodles) and decided to check out this place. Their menu seemed to have Thai essentials like Phad Thai, so we decided to give that a shot as well along with a Kari Anyan, essentially a spicy chicken curry. The mee goreng was outstanding, despite being a low spice version which we opted for since the kids love it that way. The Kari Ayam was not bad. It was flavorful but somehow it felt like the spices didn't blend in harmony. The Phad Thai was a disappointment. Maybe we should stick to authentic Thai places for Phad Thai and not order it from a Malaysian place where Phad Thai is probably not one of their core competencies. We loved the mee goreng. Needless to say, we'll be going back to get our hands on more of those yummy noodles. read more

Holy crap holy crap holy crap! I never thought that I would be a person to expand my horizons food wise. How ever this little beauty stepped into my life via my girl friend and I gotta say, you must try it! Got ourself a medicated up and went. We managed to order a good spread on the menu. The roti is absolutely amazing! The chicken satay is some of the best chicken I have ever had! And the pineapple Price is everything a pineapple fan would want (myself included). The environment is very chill.. the back wall is done in a plywood that matches the roof. It actually looks kinda cool. You will not leave this place empt stomach at all. I've been to Tropika a few times in the past, but was here again for supper after a Sunday at work in Edmonton. Usually I don't go for much Malaysian / thai / indonesian cuisine, but they definitely have a few items that are quite unique and tasty! Atmosphere: 4/5 Spacious and comfortable; overall clean with appropriate levels of lighting and noise; some interesting decor. The restaurant was located conveniently along gateway boulevard with adequate parking in the mall. Food: 3.5/5 We ended up ordering lamb, beef, and chicken satays, roti bread x 2, and a dish of choy sum to share. These were likely the most popular items and great from previous experience. The satays were well marinaded and tasty! I also really like the roti bread esp since it came warm and fresh. Unfortunately, the choy sum dish ended up being very, very oily however, hence the rating drop. Service: 3/5 Acceptable Price: 3/5 May be slightly higher than expected compared to other Asian cuisine Overall: 3.5/5 Overall there are definitely a few items such as the satays and roti bread which are very tasty and unique to the restaurant. There are also a range of spice levels as well. Went for a late lunch with 2 others and ordered Fried Calamari (batter not too heavy & included some veggies), Coconut Prawns (good number of large prawns with lots of sauce,almost like a soup) , Sambal Bunchies (spicy crisp green beans), Sweet & Sour Pork (crispy battered pork with flavorful sauce), and rice. I'm still not sure how to rate my experience here. It might just be personal taste but there were definitely some good points and bad points associated with my experience here. We went here just before 6 on a Sunday.. It was fairly empty in the restaurant, my initial impression was that it was clean and well kept but had a bit of a stale smell. About 15 minutes later, groups started flooding in for dinner! Luckily we got our orders in and had no issues with food service. We stared with roti canai which was a mix between phyllo pastry and nan bread. It came with a Malaysian spice sauce. We were sure if you were supposed to dip it or pour the sauce on top, either way it was quite delicious! We then ordered Kari lambu (beef curry), Assam ayam (chicken) and fried noodles with bbq pork. The beef curry was quite tasty. It had potatoes mixed in. The chicken was quite peculiar, I must admit I only ate the vegetables. I couldn't identify was part of the chicken each piece of meat might be, all of which had bones. The rice noodles were alright- not a lot of flavour (almost tasting stale). The amount were ordered was WAY too much for two people. I would suggest an appetizer, two dishes and a side of rice. Having never been here before I let a friend recommend his favourite menu items then I picked from them and was not disappointed! The hubster prefers going to the Tropika on the north side of town. He ate at this 104 location before and thought the quality of the food wasn't as good. I wanted to check it out for myself. We've been to this Tropika on 104th Street for lunch on two occasions. The food is good but the customer service is average. We came in for lunch and had to specifically ask for the lunch menu because we had been given a dinner menu instead. We've also had to wait for water. All I have to say is Indonesian Roasted Pork with White Pepper Corn!!! Fatty, juicy, crispy and oh sooo flavorful! I dream about this dish on the regular! This and the Sambal Bunchies (spicy green beans and prawns) go perfectly together with some coconut rice and maybe a skewer or two if you're hungry. I prefer this location to the west end in all ways except the parking. It's really quite annoying. The size of the parking lot does not accommodate for the number of businesses at all. And once you look for other parking options there's not a whole lot nearby. I ended up finding a spot across Calgary trail and that's annoying to cross since there isn't a walkway or light nearby. I love the variety of dishes they have. There's always something new to try!! The staples like kari beef, beef rendang and pineapple fried rice never fail me. I know exactly what I am going to get each and every time. This time we tried the singapore crab. Yep, I'm coming back for that. I'm allergic to crab, but it's totally worth the next few days of itchiness. After having tried Island Bistro's roti canai, I must say that Tropika's was not as good. It's more oily and the curry sauce it comes with is too watery. That said, there are tons of other things that are amazing. The homestyle fried chicken was marinated and flavorful. I was very disappointed that they were out of kang kong. For those that have no idea what that is, it's english name is fiddlehead, I believe, and they grow in the gutters in Asia. I'm a big fan of Tropika. They are happy to accommodate pre-orders for lunch to be ready when you arrive if you need to get through lunch quickly, which is pretty nice of them. Though it's never been that busy at lunch, it was packed when we were there for dinner on a recent Saturday night - if you are going around 6:30pm, I recommend making a reservation in advance. One thing that sucks is that there is very limited parking, since it's in a strip mall with other restaurants nearby. We've tried a variety of items by now so I'm going to break it down for you as to what I think is worth it, and what isn't (which really isn't that much haha) Yes - Indonesian Roasted Pork with White Pepper Corn - basically strips of tender pork (I think it's shoulder), crispy and salty and delicious. A must. Funny but I didn't see this on the menu anywhere when I was in Indonesia last year, I assumed because it's a mostly Muslim country, so I can't comment as to how authentic this dish is. In any case, don't miss is. - Tropika Home Style Chicken - crispy Asian-style fried chicken, served with a few deep fried shrimp chips. Yum. - Rendang Lembu - Beef rendang, slow simmered in coconut sauce until it fries in its own fat. Lovely pieces of beef brisket. - Sambal Bunchies - Stir fried green beans (with random chunks of tomatoes and whole shrimp) so good, that even people who don't usually eat veggies will proclaim their love for it (true story!) - Roti Canai (Malay Bread) - fluffy light and chewy pieces of bread/dough with a delicious dipping sauce. Maybe - Satays - chicken, beef, and lamb - I'm not a huge satay fan but everyone else seemed to like it. If you order beef and lamb together, it's actually a bit difficult to figure out which one is which, as the lamb is quite mild in taste and I think the beef is cooked on the same grill as the lamb. Tender, just not my thing. - Sayur Lemak Hot Pot - Assorted veggies (cauliflower, carrot, eggplant, broccoli, potatoes, and more) with a few shrimps in a curry hot pot. I liked it but it does have a very pungent aroma of the shrimp paste (maybe belacan?) - Singapore Laksa - thin rice vermicelli noodles with shrimp and fish cakes (they are like fish meatballs but the Asian kind of meatballs where it's been processed so it's very smooth and 'bouncy' in texture) in a coconut broth - I feel like there should be more broth for the amount of noodles. While I personally liked this, others may not as it also has a strong scent of shrimp paste. - Nasi goreng - essentially fried rice. Actually quite good and quite a lot of rice with veggies and meat, but I can replicate this fairly easily at home. - Daun Pisang Rendang Fish - Hard to describe this - it's supposed to be a rendang so I imagine that it was slow simmered until it cooks in its own fat. However it almost seems like it's battered and maybe dry-fried? It's not saucy at all like the beef rendang. The white fish is firm and flaky though and it's a cool spice. Skip - Pad Thai - completely underwhelming. Tasted (and looked) like they used ketchup in making it as it was quite sweet, and rosy-tinted. It's not the cheapest but your best bet is to go with a group of people so you can try lots and split the cost. Overall, I will be back! read more

We ordered a number of dishes to share amongst us. The chicken and beef skewers were good but who could go wrong with meat on a stick? I liked the peanut sauce that accompained them. The rice is always good with the sauce of the dishes. We had a spicy beef dish, pork, spicy vegetables, and noodles. All were tasty with enough heat and flavour. I enjoy coming here with groups of friends, the round tables are a lot of fun. We usually just get right in there and order a whole lot. I start out with a chi chi? It's like that anyway: pineapple juice, coconut milk, syrup, strawberries and usually I ask for a shot of rum in it. Yum! We had some friends coming into YEG for the long weekend (02-13-2016) and decided to have dinner at Tropika. I made reservations for 4 at 7:00 pm. Our friends had arrive earlier that us and were already seated when we got there. It seems to be quite busy and there was no one at the hostess stand so we helped ourselves to find our table. We had ordered Roti Canai - Malay Bread ($4.50), and Singaporean Deep Fried Calamari ($14.00) as appetizers. Bak Kut Teh Soup ($16.00), Pineapple Fried Rice with Ham and Chicken ($16.50), Pad Thai Noodles ($14.00), and Sambal Bunchies ($16.00) as our entrees. For drinks, the table had order a pot of tea, I had order an Mango Juice ($4.00), and the guys each order 2 Chee Chee Slush - Lychee Slush ($5.00). The food wasn't something to be wow-ed at. The appetizers were good. The entrees were abit of a miss... the pineapple fried rice looked good but tasted bland to me. The Pad Thai Noodles weren't flavourful, and the friends thought it was quite watery. The Bak Kut Teh Soup was not appetizing to look at but tasted decent. The service at Tropika wasn't memorable. Like most Chinese restaurant, service isn't the greatest. They seat you, take your order, bring you your food and then you bill. Very minimal interaction. If you were to need something more, as say water or hot water for your tea pot, you would have to wave someone down. This pretty sums up the service at Tropika. For me the key to a good restaurant experience is that the food has to be better in some way than what I can prepare at home, or else the price is such that it makes me think it's not even worth spending the time to cook at home. I'm not exactly one of the Iron Chefs, but I'm pretty handy in the kitchen. That being said, I have to say I wasn't particularly impressed by Tropika. I found the food to be over-priced and the quality wanting. We decided to share dishes and ordered Indonesian roasted pork with white pepper corn, sambal bunchies (green beans) and coconut rice. The sambal bunchies were good, but at $15.00 I thought I could do the same at home for far less money. Toss in a couple shrimp, green beans, a couple peppers and tomato slices, black bean and garlic sauce and we're done. I would also have double the quantity for only a couple dollars. The dish was good, but not worth the money. The Indonesian roasted pork with white pepper corn was a huge disappointment. I am averse to ordering pork in any oriental restaurant to begin with, mainly because the cut is inevitably fatty, tough and something you're more likely to toss into the waste bin. And the cooking methods of said pork often leave the resulting dish puffed like a pork rind, not to mention it being coated in sauce. My dining partner wanted it, so we got it. The meat, what there was of it, was overdone, dry and extremely fatty. I just knew this was going to happen. I barely ate any of it. The flavour wasn't bad. The quantity of the pork was a huge disappointment too. I know how cheap pork is now, and you'd be lucky if there was a couple dollars worth there. It is $14.50 and even if the dish tasted better it would be overpriced, unless the quantity was increased. And finally, the coconut rice. They should have just called it rice because I just couldn't taste the coconut. The quantity was disappointing as well. Fortunately the service was good, with our waitress being quite attentive throughout our meal. Someone came by after and asked how our meal was, so I said so. I was most disappointed with the pork and she offered to discount it. I said sure, and discovered she'd taken it right off. It's not common thing for that to happen without any debate. Though that was nice, I would have preferred that the dish was worth keeping on the bill. The ambience was good and the restaurant is nice. The OSB panels on the wall and ceiling were a little odd, but the varnish on them gives them a golden sheen; kind of unusual but a nice treatment after all. I hate to give a bad review, but I don't think we'll be back. I will give Malaysian and Indonesian food a whirl at home though. read more

Best Malaysian food in the city, hands down (although technically there is a mix of other south east asian dishes here too). I always came here with my parents when we wanted malaysian food, and it was always worth the drive. Until a few years ago, this used to be the only Tropika restaurant in town, but now there they have their west side location, which is a lot closer for us. I like the atmosphere here. They have nice southeast Asian pictures along the walls, and have large windows by the front of the restaurant to let in a lot of light. They also have fancy peacock chairs, but I've noticed they've been slowly disappearing as they're fragile. Anyways, the food here is fantastic. You cannot go wrong with any of their dishes. They have a wide range of dishes organized on their menu based on vegetables, meats, and seafood categories. They have some pictures usually on the same page, although it would be more beneficial to people unfamiliar with their dishes if they could display everything. If you're unsure, I would recommend their stayas (your choice of chicken, beef or lamb), Hainanese chicken (one of the best tasting in town and much different from your KFC), and pineapple fried rice (served in an actual pineapple cut in half). The service here is really good too, and matches the quality of food you get here. This restaurant does not look like anything flashy on the outside, butit is well worth your time to come here and treat your tastebuds! I would have given this location a higher rating, but there is a Tropika closer to my house which is more convenient to go to. read more

Tropika is my go to for when I need a hearty satisfying meal! I absolutely love the food here! Don't be fooled by the dingy exterior or .. ecclectic interior. A restaurant is first and foremost about the food. And Tropika delivers!! Service is fast! Beware of that when ordering appetizers.. your entrees will show up 2 seconds after the apps do. Items I've tried here: Satays - they were okay. I'm personally not a fan of the slightly sweet tasting savoury food style. I wouldn't order them again. Calamari - delicious! They give you a very healthy serving so only order when there are 3 or more to share with.. trying to eat a lot of it gets a bit greasy and heavy. Roti canai - delicious! The sauce they give with it is very flavourful. You definitely have to dunk the Roti in.. like make a scoop out of the Roti and scoop the sauce up with it. Indonesian style spring rolls - they were okay. I didn't like the thick outside crust.. it was too much. Assam Ayam - probably my favourite dish here!! Super flavourful chicken curry dish.. like super duper flavourful. They put some okra in it and a few other minor vegetables. One note of caution: the chicken is cut through the bone (probably one of the reasons the flavour is so deep and rich) so you may find bone shards.. just be cautious. Thai style green curry chicken - tasty! They add quite a bit of vegetables to it. Rendang lembu - very good! Kari kambing - hands down my most favourite! ! (Yea I think this wins over assam Ayam... though I love it too). This lamb curry is so good!! My husband always orders this, he won't even try other things. The last time I was here was 11 years ago until today. I was invited by my BFF for her 40th. We had chicken/beef/lamb satay with peanut sauce. They are really good especially the chicken. Their fried rice is also good, not oily and not salty, my children loved it. We're suppose to have the "kangkong" with shrimp fry but they replaced it with spinach instead, i am not a fan of veggies (not proud) but their sauteed spinach was really good and i will order it again once I come back. She recommend us to buy it fresh and pan fry it when we got home to keep it fresh. We ordered the pineapple fried rice, beef skewers, fried radish cake, rotti bread and Thai mixed vegetables.
