Kaffeeklatsch - or, as it sounds like it should translate to in English, Coffee Crotch (important note: probably not an accurate translation) - features a menu of modesty priced caffeinated drinks, pastries, and loaves of bread, as well as a well-proportioned seating area for you to plop down and write Guardians of the Galaxy fan fiction. I had a strong yet drinkable americano here that I am still feeling the effects of a week later. I also bought a chocolate chip cookie that had the perfect chewy/crunchy consistency, but also featured random salty bites, which I wasn't totally opposed to. I just enjoy seeing businesses like this, which bring something a little different to the table - in this case, a coffee shop of German origin. Good stuff. read more

Had a latte and a pretzel from here. The latte was alright, could have been a bit stronger. Wasn't bad, but wasn't the best I've had. The pretzel was mediocre at best. It wasn't warmed up, the inner folds were too thin and were very hard from baking. The outer folders were chewy and salty, but like I said, nothing to write home about. The mustard is very good - grainy, thick, and spicy. Probably too spicy for most. The servers were really friendly, but there were a couple flies buzzing around the pastries sitting by the register - a bit off putting to say the least. Super cool cafe that serves authentic German pastries and bites. The coffee was good, but the girl at the register seemed a little... ditzy (I asked her what was in a specific type of coffee, I think it was a macchiato, and she struggled to give me an answer). We could not get the WiFi to work, so we both used my phone as a hot spot (which is fine by me, but always a little frustrating when there's poor internet service). I do have one gripe that will probably prevent me from coming back here. We had never been here before so we weren't aware of the early closing time (closes at 5:30). Right before closing someone walked in and asked for a coffee, but the barista told the woman that her espresso machine was disassembled (or something like that) so she couldn't do any espresso drinks. A podcast had been playing the entire time which I thought was both peculiar and a little distracting, versus having music played like every other cafe I've been to. Around 5:30 the podcast got a little louder, enough to notice but not loud enough to complain about it. Maybe 5-10 minutes later she turned it up loud enough that it was almost comparable to music in a club, like, I'm not kidding, I could barely hear my friend talking. It was at this point that I kind of put it all together that the place was closing, after I watched the barista just standing around talking behind the counter with another employee (obviously not on the clock) and not working. It's comical at how passive aggressive and rude her way of letting us know the cafe was closed was. I'm perfectly happy when people come up to me and say something to the effect of "sorry, we're closed but we reopen at __ tomorrow". Turning up your podcast loud enough to make your customers leave without having the decency or professionalism to go over and politely let them know? Wow, extremely rude and I would never let my employees behave that way if I owned this cafe. read more

Beinenstich--soooo yummy. The baked goods are delicious, and you can see them being created from scratch in the same room where you get to enjoy them. The toys and books are so much fun. Many coffee shops have a play area, but Kaffeeklatch has great toys. Your kids won't want to leave. Plus among the many yummy baked goods are options not cram-packed with sugar, so you can buy your little one a yummy treat. Just watch the double automatic doors that lead out to downtown lake city. It's not a temptation for my kids who are zoned on the dinosaurs, etc. but it's something to be aware of. read more

Love this place!!! Yummy treats made on site including a lot of my childhood favorites, kid friendly and good coffee. Kinda German themed, but not to the point of being obnoxious, just perfect with German foods and a small town German feel. Excellent service too! Everyone is always so kind. Been driving by this establishment almost every day since it opened, today a friend and I finally went. It was good. We usually go to Staryucks up the street where I have to get flavor in my coffee just to gag it down. Here I decided on the drip and only added cream. It was very smooth. A nice brew. Well done! I also ordered a pastry, I don't remember what it was called exactly. Traditional German Quarksomethingsomething... All the pastries are listed in German. I wish they would have an explanation in English underneath as I don't think that people at the register want to go over each item with me. For a 12 oz drip and a German pastry it came to $5.81. I stopped in today while waiting for my car to be serviced a block or so away. I had a nice cup of French press and a cinnamon roll. Given that the place has a bakery on the premises I was very surprised that the cinnamon roll was stale! Really? You're a bakery and you serve stale pastries. This place has a wonderful community atmosphere--it's easy to miss, just around the corner from Bartell's. (Please get a big sign that faces the directions traffic travels!) It has a toy corner for kids, and the staff is friendly and very helpful. I came in on a busy Friday morning to get a German dessert for our international festival, and a friend who happened to be there suggested the Bienenstich (almond cake.) I ordered a half-pan of it for that evening, and it was DELICIOUS!!! It was a big hit at the festival. The most authentic assortment of German pastries you can find in the Seattle area, and needless to say that German pastries are phenomenal. I had their "Bienenstich", "Blechkuchen", and "Apfeltasche", and they were all great! Their bread looks good, too, but just haven't had a chance to try it out yet. You KNOW it's good if I put writing this before drinking my coffee! (I came back to update this from 4 to 5 stars - been here 2 x in 4 days!) I've been eyeing this place every time I drive by and finally I stopped in. It took me only a moment to lock eyes (cue the violins) with the most raspberry-rhubarb pastry. It had an authentic German name which I cannot pronounce but the kind and friendly baristas could. They topped it off with homemade whipped cream (which I didn't even know WAS A THING). I am now enjoying a plate full of crumbs and a dark cup of Guatemalan coffee and writing this before I'm 1/3 through my cup. Bonus points for a little play area for kids (I don't have them, but I will enjoy having a focused coffee with my friends when they bring theirs!), convenient parking out back, and wifi. Their LCW (Lake City Way) cookies are great! It's more than just a chocolate chip cookie. They're freshly bake to have the right amount of chocolate sweetness, chewy, but not too soft, and hint of salt to give the cookie a great flavor! read more

Who knew there was a place this cute on LCW? It is in the recently gentrified area - neighbor to the wonderful brew pub. We've been here on two weekday afternoons after 3p and the bakery selection was still fabulous. I like the biscuit with either jam or nutella and of course they have nearly a dozen authentic german pastries (which I will not attempt to spell). The service is very friendly and not rushed. Another pleasant surprise is the espresso - too often good bakeries have so-so coffee, but it looks like they're smart enough to hire talented baristas as well as bakers. (hint: plenty of parking in back, near Bartell's - you just have to look for their small back door entrance). read more

This place is a gem. Close to another favorite, Elliot Bay Brewery - this little cafe has a European feel with quality in mind. It's quaint, full of regulars and alive with activity. I'll be forthcoming and admit I know some of the staff at this place, so my review is only slightly colored by my personal ties. Kaffeeklatsch boasts authentic German pastries and breads, great coffee and the rare glass of fresh squeezed orange Juice (!). A breakfast here doesn't break the bank. My favorites: cinnamon rolls, breakfast sandwich biscuit, pretzels, americanos. Great place to bring kids, meet friends or get comfy in a corner by yourself with a good book. I never thought german breakfast could be so tasty! Their veggie biscuit is so buttery and soft, it actually crumbles in your mouth. We also had a mocha frappucino and raspberry rhubarb treat called 'blechkuchen'. Their breads look amazing and look forward to try that next time. read more

Our little family loves Kaffeeklatsch. We only eat their pretzel and pretzel rolls when we go, because they are just so good that I don't think we'd ever get sick of them. Very toddler-friendly with a spacious kids' corner. A huge plus that it's next to the bathroom and by a huge window where you can see many buses come and go. The owners are super nice too...we love watching them make their bread. The coffee is just okay though. It's certainly not bad, but my soy latte usually feels comparable to the Starbucks'. I did have some pretty great soy lattes there a few times in the past which I think might have to do with the barista. read more

Met up with a friend here the other day. I liked it. Had an iced earl grey tea. I appreciate that they don't just have a concentrate they pour it from. They did it pour over style. I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to tea since I used to work at a tea shop. My friend had a latte and one of their baked goods. She was seemed very pleased. The only thing holding me back from 5 stars is the lack of atmosphere in the place. Its not super welcoming. They could use more artwork or something in there. Cute spot! I wasn't expecting much from the location, as it's sandwiched between H&R Block and T-Mobile on Lake City Way, but there was a decent amount of seating, even at lunchtime on a workday. The total came to about $22 for a ham and brie sandwich, a roast beef sandwich, a slice of the Zitronen-Mohnkuchen, a cappuccino, and a drip coffee. The Zitronen-Mohnkuchen is pretty much a poppy seed pound cake with a light lemon glaze. The sandwiches were huge and surprised me with how good they were. The cappuccino was prepared well and my husband liked his black coffee. Kaffeklatsch was mostly filled with people on their laptops or talking quietly in pairs of two. We'll be back, for sure, just to try some of the other great looking (but difficult to pronounce) pastries in their main case. read more

My latte was a little on the acidic side. OK tasting. Pastry was tasty, but other reviewers that said that flies are abundant in the pastry case are right!!!. Even though the pastry was good, I was skeptical about the cleanliness of the facility and whether or not it was safe to eat. Avoid this place. I've been here too many times and witnessed the owner berating her employees and acting very unprofessional; it's pretty common to see the employees rolling their eyes and shaking their head at her. The employee turnover is so rampant that they don't have time to develop "coffee shop" relationships. They heat up their food in a very old oven, they have insect problems in their pastry case and really don't seem to care. This is our go to neighborhood bakery and coffee spot! The German bakery items are delicious and authentically German. The espresso beverages are well made and baristas are friendly and get to know the customers, like my fiancé who they greet and ask if he'd like his "usual!" I like that they promote community activities and events as well as try to build community within their cafe. read more

When I get lattes I am satisfied, when I get drip coffee it's not good at all. And usually there's lots of grounds in it, almost sludge-y at the bottom. The turnover rate seems high. There's new people every time I come in, and there's never enough people to cover all the duties at hand. I suspect it's a hard neighborhood to make it as a café, considering the only other place around closed down. Just don't come here in a rush or you'll miss your bus. read more

I want to like this place, and I do, as a general coffee shop. However, it's simply not German enough for me. Pros: - When my son was a toddler, they had German story time in the very nice kids corner - Some German books and relevant fliers - Pastries and bread are very tasty - Nice bright shop and friendly staff Cons: - It's a bit spendy. Bread is ~$7 for a loaf. - The coffee is not German. Not a single item on the drink menu is German. - The German pastry selection is small. Most of the pastries are American. Turnovers, bear claws, banana bread, cookies...German-wise, there are 2-3 kinds of Blechkuchen, and each piece is over $4, after taxes, and it's all stuff I could bake myself. I go to a bakery to get things I can't make myself. Especially since there isn't that much selection, I'm always a bit underwhelmed when I want to treat myself, and all I see is...Blechkuchen. I would like to see some Marzipanschnitten, Marmorkuchen, Rumkugeln, Rosinenschnecken, Joghurtschnitte, Himbeerschnitte. - They claim they have authentic Brötchen. I'm sure what they sell is good and tasty, but it's not Brötchen. It's not even close; please don't say it is. I'm happier not having them than getting my hopes up. read more

Adorned with local art and filled with friendly baristas, Kaffeeklatsch has quickly become my new favorite coffeehouse in Seattle. In addition the the regular coffee options, from local roaster True North Coffee, the small German bakery also offers a few varieties of Mighty Leaf tea, with teapot provided. While the coffee is decent, I would come back for the food alone. You won't find the typical Costco muffin and stale cookie bakery fare at this Lake City Way coffee shop and are instead presented with an array of fresh baked and delicious German pastries. Fruit Blechkuchen (the perfect pairing between a blueberry bar and sheet cake) and flaky biscuits with jam were among my favorites. Be warned however that while tasty, the pastries are heavier dishes than expected. read more

My friend said that her iced chai tastes like spicy water and my macchiato was very watery as well. But the cinnamon bun made up for it. The one thing that almost made this rating a 4 was the rather industrial feel (espresso machine + hard floors + high ceilings = echoooo). Best coffee/morning/ bakery place in lake city. Centrally located and good quality everything. They put thought into all of their selections however some of the breakfast foods are a little bland. They are doing their best okay! The coffee is good quality and it seems that their is one guy with blond hair that is the coffee guru and the selection is always better when he is in. He seems to care about coffee which is very important. It can get a bit crowded on weekends but finding a place to sit and consume some morning fuel is always manageable. I like it. We went in today and had a young man making coffee. Unfortunately he didn't know how. All I wanted was a non fat latte with a shot of peppermint. The first time he made a peppermint mocha. Then a latte in a small cup so he pours it into a bigger glass turns him back and pours in more milk. I got a cup full of milk with weak coffee. The worst coffee i ever paid for.
