Over the years we have bought food for our cat at different pet stores and supermarkets and I've never been satisfied. High prices and bad service at the former and no service at the latter. At Kahoots we have found an abundant selection, competitive prices and we have received valuable advice several times. Plus they let us bring back unopened cans of food in the event our cat does not like them. The store is clean and well organized and check out is always fast and efficient, unlike other stores. Employees were super nice and kept asking if I was finding everything alright. The store was very clean and tidy for a pet store, I don't ever expect them to be sparkling. The low rating is the limited selection of dog foods for a mom-and-pop type store, their website only shows the house brand so I had no choice but to go in to check out the selection. I was looking for foods that had no suspect ingredients that are related to DCM and had 15% or less fat, due to my dogs health issues. Beware the parking lot can be a nightmare (Trader Joes, David's Bridal, and Men's Warehouse) are in the same lot! We come here every 3 months to buy our little guy his kibble food. The Kahoots brand is inexpensive and healthy for all dogs. The ingredients are almost identical to the organic foods that we have bought in the past for him (Merrik, which is a great brand). My dog is on a strict diet due to his easy weight gain and extensive long back. The workers are always so helpful! We only purchase food from here because the toys, etc. are kind of expensive. read more

Great customer service and they offer a military discount which my other place doesn't offer. Sooo, guess what? I now have a new primary pet store! I love this pet store. I am a first time dog owner and when we first got our rescue, she was itching all day and night. I came in to get some ointment for her, and the worker there said that itching is often caused by additives in the food, and gave us some of their food to try for free, no strings attached. Her itching went away within 3 days! Now we feed her exclusively Kahoots food and she's a happy camper. Also, she loves antlers, and they have them here for $5-10 less than at PetSmart. Workers are a LITTLE sales-y, but it's 10x less than you get at a big chain store, and I notice they don't recommend something that's not a good fit for what you're looking for. read more

I purchased a harness for my new rescue dog from Petco yesterday and it didn't fit. I attempted to return it today with my receipt and exchange it for a proper size. They indicated that they would not take it back because of COVID 19. I would have to bring it back at a later date? What later date, COVID 19 is going to be with us for a long time??? As a result, I will not go back to Petco ever again. I stopped in the Kahoots store in La Mesa and they couldn't have been more helpful. The staff member took extra time to help me find the harness that would fit my size of dog. They also indicated that they would have taken the return. My spouse and I are dinks (double income no kids) we spend a lot of money on our pets. Going forward, I will make all my purchases from Kahoots! This review is a bit late being done, but I still wanted to do it. My family loves Kahoots. All the people are nice and helpful, but we want to give a special thank you to Kianna. Just over a year ago we adopted a dog that was not well behaved (or at all behaved). She had started being food and toy aggressive after a week of living with us. I searched and searched for someone to help, I even called the rescue we adopted her from (they would not call us back). We wanted to give her a chance she had been in 3 homes before we got her (she was obviously abused) and she was under a year old, but she was so hard to deal with. We got her just before lock down so we could not drive her back to Texas, and my 9 year old son was heartbroken at the thought of it. The only one place I could find help was with Kianna at Kahoots. She was able to save out dog from being taken to the human society. I have owned and trained a lot of dogs in my life, I even did show training for some of my dogs. I can honestly say I have never worked with a trainer as good as Kianna - she is literally amazing. Our dog went through 3 different training classes with Kianna and she is now a good girl. Even my son can handle her. I really can not say enough about our training from Kianna. She literally saved outlet dog. read more

Love this Kahoots! I love the staff. They're always super helpful and friendly, and they tend to make my day a little better. I get the same cat food every two weeks, and it's always in stock. I bought my cat's scratch house here for $90. It's really nice looking and sturdy. My cat doesn't really use it though. :/ I'm pretty sure it's her and not the product, though. (She's pretty neurotic) I still give 5 stars even though parking usually is a nightmare. (there's so few parking spots for all the businesses that are in that shopping center!) read more

I brought my two pups in today for a dental cleaning. BEST experience ever. All the staff was super friendly, my dogs were treated with love and had no fear and the vet was personable. I don't know who included this pet store among the top ten aquarium stores, but I was appalled. All they have is one endcap, if that much, of aquarium accessories that don't complement each other. Basically, air lines but no air stones. There were some tiny countertop tanks on the wall opposite of this endcap, but still grossly unsupported by the remainder of the inventory. This store failed badly at filling the void left by the closing of Fountain's Aquarium. read more

I love this pet store. I was in some dire straights when my rescue doggie bit my daughter on the face and I had to return to the rescue. Kahoots (Bry) gladly took all my products that I had previously purchased back and credited my card with no hassles. Plus she was so wonderful and understanding!!! That right there will make me a fan for life. Second while I was there returning my items I ran into an employee (Kevin) who was amazing. I was on the fence about getting my 4 1/2 a Guinea pig. Kevin spent a good hour with me explaining all the pro and cons of all the small animals and in the end we got a rat. My family retuned a second time to have my daughter pick out a rat and again Kevin was so kind and found the perfect one for her. He also spend a load of time with us getting all the necessary supplies and going over everything. If I could give Kevin more than five stars I would. He is truly the rat whisperer! I can not thank Kevin enough or Kahoot for helping our family through this stressful time. Mr Pickles (our rat) is the perfect pet for our family and we all truly love him. I know what you might be thinking a rat really! Yes REALLY they are amazing. If you are in the market for a small pet for your family give Kevin a try he is great! I had gone (and previously reviewed the Kahoots in Rancho San Diego) and I am still a fan of them but from now on I will do all my business with the Kahoots in La Mesa. read more

I've been coming to this store for a few months now. The staff is always super friendly and helpful which is huge. Some of them even remember me and ask about my pets! They are knowledgeable in more than just dogs and cats which is especially helpful when you bring in a new family member like birds, fish or reptiles. You should do research of course but it nice to have that extra advice. I've found everything that I need for my aquariums here, it's a little pricey but I've come to expect that from pet stores. I've also bought most of my fish here as well. There's fish selection is not quite as abundant as Petco, but the prices are great and they have a return policy if one of their fish dies as long as you have safe water conditions. The parking lot is horrible though. The Trader Joe's shoppers are savage. read more

I love Kahoots! We've shopped here for years since we had a bulldog with an incredibly sensitive stomach. Staff have always been more than helpful. In the last 6-8months there's been a girl there who goes above and beyond. Super helpful, knowledgeable, happy, welcoming and just all round excellent customer service. She deserves a mention. I normally like coming in here for the friendly service and knowledgeable staff however tonight they really ticked me off. I buy the 30lb bags of Wellness food for my pups. Tonight when I put it on the counter I noticed the bag was really dusty looking so I checked the date. It expires tomorrow. As you know dog food usually has a year out expiration. The cocky older chick at the counter tried to tell me it would still be good for at least 6 more months. Also that they don't sell much of that anymore so they didn't have any fresh bags I'm the back. That's all and good but I'm not paying $60 for expired food. Then when I left I watched them from outside put it back on the shelf. Really? You just lost me as a customer. read more

Kahoots sells Beta Siamese fighting fish in containers that do not allow the fish to move about nor to engage in any of their critical species specific behaviors. If Kahoots put a dog or cat in a comparable space they would be guilty of animal cruelty. I guess Kahoots believes that fish deserve no moral consideration. I wrote to Kahoots Corporate office and they acknowledged in writing that the containers were not good welfare but their reasoning was that it was only temporary. I sent them the welfare requirements as established by the RSPCA for these fish. Kahoots was not meeting a single welfare requirement. I suggested several alternatives that provided the fish with good welfare and still allowed Kahoots to sell them. I guess Kahoots felt that they could get away with bad welfare as they continue putting the fish in containers where they can barely move. Kahoots says that they have a passion for animals. I think that their passion is for making a fast buck at the animals expense. I am saddened that Kahoots refused to change their policy even after they acknowledged the conditions did not meet minimum welfare standards. For those of us who believe in responsible ownership of animals, I would give a wide berth to Kahoots. Kahoots clearly cares not a whit for animal welfare if it inconveniences them earning a fast buck. read more

I came in the other day to look at the fancy rats. It gets harder and harder to find healthy, friendly little pet rats at pet shops. Rodney was the gentleman who helped me with the rats and supplies. He was very personable, professional, and informed- which is also becoming a bit rate at pet shops. I was super impressed with his service. Everyone working in the store was friendly and smiling. I buy Kahoots brand dog food now and then, as it's right next door to Trader Joe's. Not an easy parking lot, so I may as well kill two birds with one stone, right? I believe there are many other pet stores and brands to choose from, that are comparable to Kahoots brand, so I am rating this on customer service. It was terrible. The last time I was in, the cashier was on her phone and I had to ask to be rung up. This time, she was so busy speaking to her co-worker than she said not ONE word to me through the whole transaction. No greeting, no thank you, not one word. As I was walking out, she said "See ya!" So, I'll be taking my $56.41 to another store where the cashiers are more professional. I would have put her name on this, but it's not on the receipt. They have a nice selection of items. It is VERY clean. I didn't receive any interaction from staff but they were assisting an older gentleman when I came in. I didn't like how sad and half dead their beta fish looked. Poor creatures need more attention. Some items were a good price and some were over priced in my opinion, at least as far as dog toys go but that happens anywhere. read more

Great customer service. I was having vomiting issues with my cat (big male ragdoll). I knew he was healthy and wasn't chewing on plants (so not poison or hairball issues) but again why was he vomiting...? They were very knowledgeable with cat behavior. My cat was basically a gulper...they suggested I spread his food out on a platter not allowing him to gulp and also supplementing it with some freeze dried raw for just some more healthy supplementation. No more vomiting and he is actually eating more now. I never thought he would like the raw food...he actually loves it. Thanks ladies!!! read more

This store is catered to Dogs. The car selection is ok, but they do not seem to carry a large variety or have a lot of knowledge on cat issues. Plus they stopped carrying "catnip buds" they were dried buds of catnip that you breakup for your cat. My cat loves them. No more though they don't even seem to know what I am talking about when I ask them although I previously bought these for years from the Rancho location. read more

Extremely nice staff! They were very kind and accommodating even though it was close to closing time. Prices seem very competitive for high quality products. They carry a lot of great treats and goods for people who care about what they put in their pets' bodies. The only concern I have is about the amount of private label goods (Kahoots brand). Without knowing who manufactures the product and the parent company of those manufacturers, I'm hesitant to buy the food. Kudos to Kahoots and a BIG THANK YOU to one of the employees, Brie, from what I was told is a "Key Holder" of the store. I had come into the store to purchase the Kahoots 15lb grain free salmon dry dog food with 4 cans of the Kahoots canned chicken dog food. When I had got up to the register I realized that when I changed out my purse, earlier, that I had left my credit cards and check book in my other purse. I had $23 cash on me... So, I had said that I would just get a small bag of the dry dog food instead. The clerk had said they were out of the small bags of salmon kibble. I was fine with that and said I would just grab the small boar kibble dog food. When I came back up to the register Brie was up there with the cashier. I thought she was just adjusting the exchange? To my surprise she had discounted ALL the items I originally was going to get to be $23! The cash I had on hand! I was completely surprised of this gesture and wasn't expecting this at all! So, KUDOS to Kahoots, to their employees, especially Brie and a great store with GREAT products. I highly suggest this place! Their brand is exemplary, the store is clean and bright with a great selection and what can more can I say about the staff. This is one happy pet owner of a cat, dogs, hermit crabs and a fish. I have been a fan of Kahoot''s in Ramona for several years. We no longer live here but now that we are back visiting we stopped in the store at Grossmont. Yoko helped us look for a few items that we needed for our small dog. She was very knowledgeable about the store and was great to work with in finding a collar that fit. I can't remember having an employee taking the time to answer all our questions about dog food and nutrition. Yoko helped us decide on which food was the best choice for our dog.
