This is truly a hidden gem in this area. So unlike the overpriced, low-quality tourist traps in Hanalei, the focus in this lovely restaurant is on fresh, healthy and incredibly delicious food ... and of course, their coffee is simply amazing too. We were staying at the nearby Westin Princeville (around 5 miles away) but having discovered this place we made it a point to come and have breakfast or brunch three times during our 6 day stay ,,, it's that good! More specifically: we live in Midtown Manhattan, New York City so (at least we think) we know our bagels. Based on previous experiences with bagels outside of NYC, our expectations were low ... but we were blown away here. Over the course of our various meals here, we had the Dilly egg (eggs with a generous dose of dill) on bagel, the Feta cheese / pesto on bagel, and a couple of other non-bagel based items, all of which are thoughtfully crafted and expertly assembled, had perfect texture and were full of freshness and flavor. The various teas and coffees we had here (including the Chemex pour over) were also perfectly executed. They even made a special (off-menu) brew of ginger and lime for my wife to help with her sinus. Much appreciated! All in all, this is an excellent option for people staying at the nearby resorts and who don't want to be subjected to their usual average and overpriced fare. read more

I had a horrible experience today at Kai Bar. I ordered food it never came. My husband & his friend received their food. When I asked the server where are my eggs he said it was never ordered. Then he proceeds to ask me what I ordered I said a power bowl. He asked how I wanted it & I said the way it comes on the menu. Still no food. My friend goes to the kitchen & asked where is the food. She was told they gave my order to someone else. Not I person said sorry we will take care of it right away. No management at all. Very disappointed in the Kai Bar. I will never go back there again. And I will tell all my friends not to go there. read more

The barista was super nice to everybody including us. But the whole vibe of the place is very "white only". My girlfriend and I both Mexican went In and there was a relatively long wait and they were super busy so it made sense. As soon as we walk in all eyes on us. My gf was wearing a tube top and all the older ladies were judging the whole time. We kept getting side eyed by everyone. We were the only people that weren't white in the restaurant and all the patrons made it known. I've never felt this uncomfortable but unfortunately this is a recurring theme in Kauai. Service is horrible. I did a mobile order which I have done in the past and knew they kept it behind the bar when ready. I walked in and waited for the barista or even the cashier to acknowledge me but they were too busy flirting to even look my way. I said hiiiii and nothing. I probably waited almost 5 minutes without acknowledgement and said eff it and went behind the coffee bar and grabbed my drink.. Then they noticed me and gave me dirty looks. Drinks are good customer service sucks. Some days you might wait 20+ minutes for your drinks... That's not even a busy day. read more

We came here for breakfast and coffee on a Sunday morning and we were so happy we did! They have 100% Kona and a few other drip coffee selections. We also had breakfast which was onolicious! This place is more for the gram than it is for the belly. Visiting Kauai, we found this place to get some breakfast and all the food was just blank. For example, I ordered the Sunrise Brekkie which is a papaya bowl with a bagel and bacon. There was literally an empty papaya bowl with ZERO papaya. The bacon was just crumbs on the side. I ordered a Kona coffee, it came luke warm. So I sent it back and they were happy to remake it. Coffee was good. No complaints. All in all, not a great experience because all 6 of us didn't like our food. It's just nice pictures and high prices to be honest. read more

The coffee is decent. There are better beans out there, but Kai Bar's environment is the draw. Good food, good portion sizes. Friendly staff, beautiful indoor seating. 3 stars for how they are handling Covid related restrictions. They have a sign that says "no mesh masks." Great! I was thinking of those loosely woven pretend masks that people wear to make a statement. Nope! I was wearing a double layer, micro mesh mask made for athletes, and was asked to put on a disposable mask (they were very kind in asking, and provided one). I was the only customer in line, the employee was wearing a mask and standing behind a plexiglass barrier, and the counter naturally put us a few feet apart. When I looked around, every table had maskless people sitting less than six feet apart from other maskless customers. Their bench seating puts strangers as close as 3 feet apart, but allows them to sit in there for up to 90 minutes, unmasked. Their straws, lids, and extras are all out on a counter for anyone to touch. When I sat down and was allowed to take off my masks just seconds after putting on the disposable, and the staff came and delivered my food to my table, unphased by my maskless face. I'm just confused, Java Kai. It feels like you're splitting hairs. If I'm free to sit next to a stranger and eat/drink/study for 90 minutes, can I please stand in line and order without being told my mask is not the right kind? read more
