I wish I would've read the reviews before me and my kids came here. I really wanted fried rice that's why I came. My son ordered the salmon teriyaki and teriyaki sauce didn't even come on the fish. I ordered something with garlic sauce. It was super nasty. I realized after paying and leaving the sauces that were supposed to come on the food were not the sauces that came on the food. Then the waiter had the nerve to ask me why I didn't tip. SIR THE FOOD WAS SUPER DISGUSTING and I already spent $100 on disgust!! DO NOT EAT HERE!! This place is just okay. I came here with a friend who keeps kosher and we both wanted sushi. I thought I would give this place a try. The place is clean, in a good area, nice and bright with the windows, the servers are attentive, but the food is just not good. It's not bad, but not good either. I ordered tuna tartare, a spicy tuna roll, and a spicy salmon roll. I don't know what their non spicy alternatives tasted like, but I wouldn't want to find out. No flavor. I thought I could remedy that with some wasabi. The wasabi was also flavorless! I've never been able to eat so much wasabi in one meal. My friend who keeps kosher was also not impressed. Had high hopes, but I did not like any of my food particularly. I had wonton soup, salad with carrot dressing and Dragon Roll sushi. The wonton skins were very light and good but the meat inside tasted terrible and the soup like dishwater, the salad greens were tasteless as was the Dragon Roll. Literally no taste at all. The service was excellent though, they put a carafe of water on the table along with fried noodles and duck sauce (the latter also had no taste at all). The waiter and host were very accommodating, and it was a nice comfortable place to eat. I might return to see how some of the main Chinese dishes are, but not holding my breath. The chicken cashew was disgusting. It was large pieces of celery, some baby corn that was not fresh at all, and some pieces of chicken floating in there that were rather gross. I was really disappointed. The lo mein was fine, but overall this place is very skimpy on the meat given the high prices. Will not be going back. read more

First, I have been ordering here consistently for years. I live in the city and the price for sushi is ridiculous. I would always grab a combo to share with my family and the portion sizes were always huge for the price, and the quality amazing. Genuinely a steal ( although I know its more expensive now due to the rise of inflation which I don't blame them for.) before finding Kai fan I would have to travel to Yonkers just to get good quality economic sushi. I haven't been recently but I know buisnesss are struggling and this is one of those few gems I would hate to see shut down because of it. Support your local businesses in Riverdale! If I could give them 6 stars I would, they are great!!! Went there on a date with a lovely friend expecting the usual Kosher Chinese fare that I have had from LA to Pittsburgh to my hometown here on Long Island, NY. I came expecting the food to be the normal I have expected in an inexpensive (for Kosher that is) Chinese restaurant, OK to good. However this restaurant astounded me, it was different!!! The food was fabulous!!! We both had the 'Hot and Sour' soup, and it was impressive! The temp, was just right, not luke-warm as I have come to expect in many restaurants, and, not scaldingly hot, but just right! The spices were hot as they should be, but not too hot. As I said, I was amazed!!! Then for the mains, we had, Spicy Chicken and Curry Chicken. Again the spices were quite hot, but not too, at least for me. My date found the spices in her Spicey Chicken a tad too much; but for my palate when I tasted it they were hot but not too, with a subtle delight. It is hard to express. As for my Curry Chicken, it was quite the delight! And we both commented how the presentation of the food on the plates was 'picture perfect.' I would suggest you go and write your own experience! I got the sushi lunch special and it was not fresh and very disgusting. The wasabi was a weird dark green- very suspicious- and for the first time ever I didn't eat my sushi. Do not eat here! For a Kosher Chinese place in Riverdale, this place is pretty good. It's understandably difficult to find authentic Chinese food that is also Kosher, but this place comes closer than most other Kosher Chinese places. Their menu is pretty extensive with many options for differing tastes. They even have non-Chinese options like sushi and some Thai noodle dishes. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere. They serve crispy noodles with duck sauce in traditional American Chinese dining room fashion. Tea is available upon request. The service is friendly but a bit delayed. The wait staff and manager are all very accommodating and are willing to make substitutions. The egg rolls, dumplings, and cold sesame noodles make for good appetizers. The cold sesame noodles are not especially authentic, leaning much more on the peanut-buttery side than the sesame side, but they are still tasty. The hot and sour soup is vegetarian friendly, hearty and well flavored. The general Tso's tofu is a nice vegetarian option for an entree. The portion is huge and comes with steamed broccoli. The tofu is a bit over-breaded and the breading falls off of the tofu easily. Nonetheless, it's a reasonable option for vegetarians who are stuck eating at a Kosher Chinese restaurant. The Szechuan hot oil dish can be made with tofu. This dish comes closest to an authentic Chinese dish at this restaurant, but the flavor and spice level just isn't what you will find at a more authentic place. The sushi is adequate, and a good option if you are looking for a lighter meal. The meat dishes all come with huge portions and look pretty good. Overall, this is an above average Kosher Chinese restaurant in a neighborhood that really needs one. The place does a good job at maintaining some level of authenticity while also providing Kosher food. Unlike many Kosher Chinese places, you don't feel like you are sacrificing quality by eating here. It's a great addition to the sparse Riverdale dining scene. Okay found this little gem in neighborhood on a Sunday walk with #moiBeastie, after missing brunch at our local Tim Marin we decided to try Kai Fun since it looked new open and clean and they had a little bit of everything Asian.......so let me add that the are kosher friendly which is big in that neighborhood......so they were very family active at the moment on Sunday afternoon. Which served in our favor I guess......all dishes were or rather had the fresh to made.....I just went into my garden taste which was refreshing and just palate enjoyable and a welcomed change from all being drowned in brown or white sauce. And the appetizers are interesting and tasty. A little pricey but the portions and standard and presentation of the food was worth it. So this will be in rotation on occasion pricing wise or when I really want some good fresh sushi oh didn't I mention they do that too. read more

Love their all you can eat on Mondays and Tuesday!! Place is super clean, staff is friendly, and the food is delicious. I do wish there were more meat options for the all you can eat menu but at least the food is fresh and good. I also love their regular menu. It is expensive so I can't get it that often but we are always satisfied. Also their delivery is amazing. They are super fast and the food arrives warm. read more

We ordered the hunan steak ($24.00) a simple beef lo mein ($13) and a cup of wine ($10). The beef was soaked in too much sauce and was not worth the price we paid. My husband and I decided to try this place out during this Pandemic on Sundays we treat ourselves after a hard work out! We ordered the General Tsos chicken for $24 and the Seafood Salad cooked. When we got home my husband excitedly opened up his general tsos chicken to find that it was all breading and no chicken let me repeat for $24!!!!! My seafood salad was $20 because i asked for some seaweed as cheap as lettuce is they gave me a few pieces of Mixed greens a few pieces of cooked fish and like .60 cents worth of seaweed, also ordered veggie dumplings that had no flavor and the dough was extremely chewy felt uncooked. This is now our go to place when in Riverdale. My mom is addicted to their wings ! The food is very fresh and well prepared. It's very reasonably priced once you know the menu well. Incredible food. We showed up for the all-you-can-eat (which only happens on Mondays and Tuesdays). It's very straightforward; you fill out your food sheet (which has an incredible assortment of sushi, chicken dishes, dumplings, noodles, salads and soups) and you wait. Every table gets a complimentary fried wonton strips with duck sauce (which by the way, they leave all the sauces at the table even after they clear the dirty plates, which is brilliant) which we all gobbled down and waiting patiently for out food. The food came about 10 minutes after we ordered it, and boy was it freaking amazing. We got all sorts of sushi, a ton of chicken and beef dumplings (steamed and fried, we liked the steamed chicken better), a few chicken yakitori (delicious), spring rolls, egg rolls, seaweed salad, miso soup (a little bit on the salty side but still SO good) and egg drop soup. All the food was freaking incredible. The service was amazing. The $28 dollars was a lot for an all you can eat, but we definitely ate $28 dollars worth. At the end, none of us could move and we regretted all the food we ate, but it was still one of my favorite dining experiences with my family. This place came highly recommended for its lunch specials, so I stopped by today for lunch. I ordered the sushi lunch special, and had the spicy tuna and California roll. The California roll was great, the spicy tuna way too spicy!! But the rolls were nicely sized and super fresh. This would have been a 4 or 5 size star review if not for the ambiance and dining experience. The restaurant was nearly empty, and the staff was taking advantage of this by sitting at some of the tables shelling peas or something, chatting and laughing at the top of their lungs. Super annoying. Some staff members literally ran back and forth past my table from the kitchen to the front door and back. Not sure what was happening, but it was super annoying and detracted significantly from the dining experience. **To the owner who responded: First, let me say thank you for responding. I'm ok with admitting if I'm wrong and I get why a 2 year hiatus might seem suspect. Except that, while this account was not active for 2 years, it is now and this restaurant is not the only new review to be posted this year. The staff, while friendly, did not check up on our table except to get the order and give the check (which is fine by me). Knowing many who work in the hospitality business, I know that people who complain about the food just to get it free is a major issue which is why I have personally never done it (even if the experience was not good). Maybe my inexperience with kosher food is what made the flavor so off for me, I'm willing to admit that but ultimately it does not change that the food was, personally, flavorless. So far it seems that my review is the only one you responded too. Perhaps consider looking over the review that complained about an 1hr and 50min wait, or the one who also found the food flavorless or the other review that felt uncomfortable by one of your workers, or the family with 2 children who waited an hour for food (some members even left without getting their food). Take a gander at the Tipper who said they became ill after eating at Kai Fan. Again, thank you for responded back. Wish you well in all your endeavors.** So I get that alot of Asian cuisines are 'Americanized' and many are turned into greasy, fatty demonized versions of the real thing. With that said, this place was the complete opposite of that spectrum. Let me start with one good thing about the place: the inside is nice. None of the food had any sort of flavor. NONE. We got fried wontons: no flavor and made almost entirely out of fired dough. The only flavor this had was of frying oil. I got the Beef Pad Thai: no flavor, no peanuts, no sauce. Again, it tasted just of oil and the beef was similar to half cooked Steak-umms. I had to put soy sauce on just to give it some kind of flavor (I never and would have never thought this was an acceptable option with Pad Thai). He got the beef and broccoli: Again, fried Steak-umms. We pretty much spent the whole date just looking at each other, looking at the food, moving it around with our forks, and looking back up at each other wondering why the hell we just spent $23/entrée that has absolutely no flavor (except for the flavor of oil), Two college aged boys came, ordered food, took a couple of bites, then asked for the check and left. They didn't even remotely finish their meal (or take it to go) but they did pay for the check. The waitstaff was a bit slow but not so bad to really comment on (that's saved for the terrible food). I watched the video for Kai Fan and no, Bobby Lu, not all your customers have a wonderful experience. I would be embarrassed to recommend the place to someone who came from any area in Asia. Nobody is still thinking about your food when they go home. Except for how terrible it was to waste money on it. read more

Overall in this area, the sushi is considered pretty excellent. Especially the rolls! They were delicious and we had a great experience with our server named Cat. She gave us a brief recommendation of what we should order based upon what she thought was popular by the crowd and she always went back and forth to our table to ask if we needed anything or how the food was. Quality service from this girl, that's partially why I rated this restaurant five stars. You can't expect too much for the price you're paying here. Some people are expecting $100 worth fresh Japan shipped sashimi or sushi but are only willing to pay $12-$30 for it. Anyways, must give props to my server that night and the sushi she recommended! A lot of people say "Oh that's my favorite thing" so much that the word favorite loses its meaning. To me, favorite means it's the thing that you prefer over all other options most of the time. So if your favorite color is red then you will choose red over all other colors most of the time. If you say iron man 2 is my favorite superhero movie, you'd be very silly, but that means that given the opportunity to watch a superhero movie you choose Ironman 2 over all others most of the time. So it stands that when I say this if my favorite restaurant I mean this is the place I choose to go over everywhere else most of the time. The owner can attest to this fact, as I'm pretty sure I've been there more than anyone else in its history, from szechaun garden to ginger grill and now in its current form of Kai fan. Death, taxes, and sesame chicken from here. These are the only true constants in the universe. I'm generally a picky eater and find most food inconsistent. I wouldn't even claim that all of Kai fans food is consistent. But I have never in my life ever been disappointed by the sesame chicken. Never. And I've eaten it well over 1000 times. I'll eat sesame chicken at my sons bris, at my daughters wedding, and on my death bed. Am I nuts? I think I'm the only sane person on this planet. My husband and I ordered the beef and broccoli the other night and it was disgusting. When the restaurant first opened it was hit or miss (sometimes pretty good) and definitely never this bad. The food was bland, the sauce was grainy (???!!!) and the beef was mushy and rubbery. I felt like I was eating mystery meat. We had to throw it away. And btw it is not cheap. The sushi here is so fresh. Im a sushi fanatic and I love their wild Alaskan King salmon sashimi. The chef special rolls were very unique and pretty. Of course they were delicious as well.
