Came here for a late lunch to satisfy a sushi craving. The place looks typical for a sushi restaurant and service was quick and friendly. Their lunch specials are a good deal. 3 of us had the 2 roll special for $14.99 - and each roll was decent sized and we loved that there was only a thin layer of rice. One had the sushi & sashimi combo lunch which came with 6 sashimi, 4 sushi and crab roll - the sashimi was sliced thicker than other places we've been to and tasted really fresh! We were looking for a quick lunch while out running errands. Stopped in here and I am really glad we did. The place is tactfully decorated and it was very clean. My husband got the hibachi chicken. We spent about $80 on THREE rolls (thinking they would be huge because they sounded amazing and because of the $$$), and the portions were teeny tiny. I've been to a lot of sushi restaurants in the metro, and I think these were the smallest rolls I've ever had. Got there right when it opened and had fast service! Brought our two kids and the staff helped grab cheater chopsticks to start. Clean and nice atmosphere. The lunch specials are amazing! I know not to expect much eating sushi in the midwest when coming from San Francisco but was recommended this place and saw the reviews so I decided to give it a try. I was let down. The two main things that didn't do it for me was the rice and the need to drench everything in (unagi) sauce. The rice was hard and just didn't taste right. I'm surprised because it seems like they have good enough traffic where the rice shouldn't taste like it's a day old, especially by dinner time. As for the sauce, I have never had salmon belly sashimi, or any sashimi served with sauce on top. I was surprised and confused when they brought it out. It wasn't horrible but definitely super unnecessary and ruined the point of enjoying sashimi. Service was good and staff were very nice. As you walk in you are transported to Tokyo it looks like a you're in Japan restaurant. Nice touch . Craving for sushi - more specifically nigiri - after work, and wanting to try a new sushi spot, I stopped by Kai's Sushi and Grill. I got the Beef Tataki, Fatty Tuna Nigiri (Toro), and the Sushi Platter with California Roll and Miso Soup. The Beef Tataki was not the usual thin slices of beef. It's an actual whole steak, but more on the thinner size of steaks. The exterior had a crisp and slight char texture. The middle: moist, beefy, and medium rare. The tataki sauce was not as citrusy, vinegary, and strong in flavor as the usual tataki sauce. However, that's not a bad thing. The sauce was still good and not overpowering the beefy flavor. This was delicious. I would reccomend getting it as the appetizer. The California Roll and Miso Soup that came with the Sushi Platter is what you'll expect. Not bad. Pretty good. And they do their job. The sushi platter consisted of 10 nigiri. Man, these nigiri are so good. You can tell the fish cuts are good quality. Since I have a shellfish allergy, my nigiri were: 2 Salmon, 3 Tuna, 2 Yellow Tail, 2 Snapper, and 1 Albacore. They were all superb. My favorite was the Albacore, but again, they are all good. The Yellow Tail had the more natural chewy texture. The rest was more naturally fatty and had a bit of a delicate and slight melt in your mouth affect (some more delicate than others). The Fatty Tuna (Toro)? Sheesh it was delicious too. It also had the delicate and slight melt in your mouth affect. Although it was delicious, the nigiri from the sushi platter I would say would be on the same par. The service was good. The waitress was cool and engaging. This may be one of my go-to sushi spots. The best in Minnesota? I'm not sure. But good quality and delicious sushi? Definitely. I will be craving for Kai Sushi & Grill and may be tempted to stop by often. Kai's is a welcome addition to the restaurant offerings in northwest Minnetonka. Pay no attention that it's located in a 1950s strip mail next to an auto body shop and yoga studio. Or that access is a bit tricky and parking in the front is limited. Go for the sushi (although they do have curry on the menu) and sashimi. And the appetizers. We started with gyoza dumplings that were very tasty. 8 pieces for $7 is quite reasonable. The miso soup is among the best we've had. We've often had squid that is rubbery, but Kai's takoyaki was tender and delicious. Our entrée was the sushi and sashimi platter, which was beautifully presented and quite substantial for 2. Kai's is an intimate space with minimalist furnishings (except for the giant TV, which they could do without). The staff is pleasant and efficient and the ambience is relaxing. With so many sushi places popping up, a visit to Kai's in Minnetonka is well worth it. read more
