First I Walked into the reastraunt and the first thing I noticed was the dirty smell. If you know what I am talking about, there's gross fish smell and good fish smell. This was a very bad fish smell. As I go to get seated nobody is here dining in and all the tables are filled with left overs except one table. It just looked gross and made the whole joint smell. Counterfeit Fish Alert!!! So we went here 6 months ago and it was fantastic. They have super generous slices of fish (still). However we have been here twice recently and wow it has gotten horrible. Serving dyed white fish and passing off as tuna. Pick up any slice of tuna and see the red dye on the rice. Served us some counterfeit yellow tail (definitely some other fish). So disappointing!!! Also the service is now a bunch of teenagers who spend their time on their phones before customer service. Surprising find in Albany! This sushi place was actually really good, has good prices for nigiri, and comes with a reasonable serving. Full disclosure: I can only speak on the takeout experience & sake (salmon) nigiri since that's all I got, but it was great! Each nigiri came as a decent-sized cut of salmon with not-too-much rice. Wish it came with more ginger, but overall surpassed my expectations for sushi in the area. Good quality fish, good size cut. Someone here is incompetent...the hostess. She should pay more attention to the takeout orders! The online order system said my order would be ready by 550PM. I arrive at 605PM to find out the girl in the front wasn't paying attention and the Doordash person picked up my decent size order and delivered it to someone else. They put my order together...as quickly as you can roll sushi I guess and I received that 15min later. I'm salty about my experience because I was already charged the meal...including the 15% tip I added on my online order that I couldn't take back/reduce when I arrived at the restaurant. Knowing of my online tip, they should have threw in a little extra something for my troubles, especially since the order mix up with Grubhub left an 'unpicked up' (not really a word) order somewhere on the counter. I LOVE this place and will visit them time and time again. My experience began when I called and asked about wait times. I was told there shouldn't be a wait, but if there is, it would be less than 10 minutes. I arrived with my four children and we were seated immediately. Drink orders were taken. They had Japanese sodas available and my children loved them. Then came the conveyor belt of freshly prepared sushi. The plates are color coded for price so I was able to tell my children that they could pick as many green plates as they wanted (green is the cheapest). In addition to the conveyor belt of fresh sushi where you pick what you want without having to wait, you can order specialty items (we had the 911). In addition, if something you want isn't going around on the conveyor belt, just ask. The staff were happy to prepare whatever we were looking for! The employees elevated our experience. They checked in with us often and made recommendations. We left extremely full for much less than I've paid for us all to eat at "all you can eat" sushi places. The creamy scallop shushi dish (I'm not good with names so please forgive me) was recommended and I was impressed. Fish eggs adorned to top of the dish. The mixture of flavors was amazing. Even better, my kids loved it all. My son didn't care for the squid salad. It had a gingery taste and I'm afraid he doesn't like ginger. Now that I've told you about my secret spot, please go. Well... it sucks. Ordered the spider roll, which you could taste the rot in the cooked soft shell crab. It tasted like liver. Ordered the Creamy scallops handroll, and it looked like mayo with minced scallops. I had to scoop out some of it and put it on a another sushi roll because it was too much "cream". Ordered the house roll, and all "cooked tuna" on the menu is canned Tuna. The server repeatedly stated this as if she had never seen a cooked tuna outside of a can. We politely asked for a return on the rolls because it was not what we had expected after trying only 1 of the 8 rolls we received. After asking the server if it was canned tuna, she got an attitude and showed the worst service I have experienced. For most of the dining experience, she was not waiting tables or servicing guests - she spent most of it on her phone and standing around.. This review is coming from a person who has worked in hospitality for 10 years as a line cook/sous chef and grew up as an asian-american surrounded by many asian foods. Three stars is generous, and definitely doesn't represent the sushi itself at this restaurant. I'll start with the positive. The blonde hostess/waitress was sweet and attentive. Also the vegetable tempura was delicious. Now, on to the not so positive/borderline gross. Never having had been to Oregon, I didn't really know what to expect as far as the sushi scene. Well, let me tell you to not expect much. We were starving so we ordered a bunch of rolls. The 911 roll had decent escolar (aka "white tuna") on top, but the spicy tuna inside had a weird twang to It. I don't mean that in a good way. Also, the tuna in the tuna lovers roll was gray. This was obviously really off-putting. The only decent sushi roll was the AAC, which had avocado and tempura fried asparagus. In reality, we only liked It because It didn't have any rank fish in It. But, ultimately our appetites were so tarnished from the rest of the rolls, we didn't even end up finishing It either. Additionally, my Thai iced tea tasted like dish water, basically like It was made with old pipe tap water. I'm trying not to compare this to Sugoi Sushi in Corvallis, but it's hard not to. Both are conveyor belt sushi joints, but I'll try to stay as unbiased as possible. We went on a Monday afternoon, and several other parties were seated at booths around the conveyors belts. We were seated promptly, and wait staff was courteous and attentive when they could be. The restaurant was quite clean, and the circulation of food was kept relatively constant. We didn't feel the need to order any rolls, and were able to pick up edamame and other sides with our meal. Sushi was as expected, mostly heavy with imitation crab salad. The shrimp roll we ordered didn't taste like anything, so I opted out of eating the full serving. Thai iced tea was ice heavy, and way creamier than normal. Wouldn't order again. Ramen was seasoned and with clump-less noodles. Sparse on veggies. BAD FIRST IMPRESSION! We were excited to see a new sushi restaurant open in Albany. It turned out to be a very late lunch for us on this labor day, but we were excited to see the Grand Opening sign and the handwritten sign on the door saying "Happy Hour M-F 2:00-4:30 25% off." Unfortunately, they didn't honor their sign when we paid the check! The sushi that passed by on the belt was mostly rolls and not a lot of variety. The taste was fine, what you would expect for economy sushi, but nothing outstanding. We ate and were filled. When we paid the check, I asked why we didn't receive Happy Hour pricing. The cashier said that it was because it was a holiday. I said that I didn't consider that very fair the way the sign on the door was written. The cashier agreed with me and said that he had already asked the manager about it, but the manager didn't want to do anything about it. If this is true, then this restaurant will have trouble gaining loyal customers. There needs to be better communication and integrity with the staff for customers to not feel treated unfairly. I agree with a previous review - skip this place and go to Ginza. read more
