First time here, some friends & I came in for an early dinner and it was not busy. We were really excited to see they had Korean BBQ and all ordered meats we could grill. Turns out we could NOT grill them, but this was not explained to us when we ordered, and then had an extremely weird & uncomfortable meal. A man working at the restaurant came over with the raw meats, stood there the whole time, grilled it, wouldn't let us do it ourselves, which was weird enough, but then proceeded to tell us what to dip things in, how much salad to serve ourselves, what to eat the meats with, what not to eat meats with, and was generally bossy. Supposedly this is due to customers coming in not having done Korean BBQ before and not knowing how long to grill meats, however we had all been to Korean BBQ joints before, and knew how it worked, but were not asked. We just awkwardly sat there in silence as none of us felt like continuing our conversation until the guy was done and left us alone. Used to come to the store a lot of lunch with my mom. Things have really gone downhill recently. They used to do service requests of like, I can't have tuna or x, or be able to serve your favorite fish in a combo. I came in and was informed due to rising prices of fish, they refused to serve the fish of my choice. Ridiculous. I went next door to Tokyo and was able to eat my fish of choice, salmon It's really crazy, like we used to be regulars for a long time, and it seems they forgot they're in the service industry. This is one of the better sushi places in Corvallis I've tried. Miso soup is really good (just wish it came with tofu). Tempura wasn't a heavy batter which was nice. All the nigiri we got was good. I always get spicy yellowtail at sushi places but this one was too spicy for the whole table. You couldn't even taste the yellowtail and all our mouths were burning. Not sure if it's always this hot or we just went on an extra spicy day. We all preferred the nigiri to the rolls. The Oogie boogie special they had was our favorite mixed roll we've tried so far. Calamari was good except for some pieces that were a little overcooked. Would go back for the yellowtail, salmon, unagi, albacore nigiri and tempura. read more

While visiting our daughter in Corvalis, OR we visited this restaurant. The atmosphere was pleasant and had the feel of a normal family restaurant. The tables and floor were clean. Vents over the table and burners in the middle of the table were previously used for Korean BBQ. The menu still shows what was served for that style & just has writing that indicates that this is no longer an option. We wanted to sample quite a few items, so we ordered a lot and shared them. The sushi and sashimi were true to their name, as I've had at other restaurants. There are some unique options offered, such as the mango topped sushi. Delicious sushi and bibimbap. The bibimbap was delicious and was served with rice on the side, so it was pretty healthy and was so good. The hamachi was very fresh and delicious. It doesn't look like much from the doorway, but it's a great restaurant. The service was the most hysterically funny service I've seen in a while. Five people waited on us. Three people asked if we wanted to-go boxes. Not one of them could get us the boxes we requested, even on our third ask. Our assigned waiter couldn't tell us anything about any of the food or drink and disappeared address taking our order after we walked for 20 minutes. Maybe she got fired? No one could manage to clear our table without us asking and when they did, they couldn't manage to take all of them. Maybe they are european and don't take dishes away? Anyway, it was all worth it. I tried to order takeout last night for me and my grandson, placed the order and headed to the restaurant to pick up ($45 order) I got a call telling me that they could not make the kids teriyaki to go. He couldn't give me a reason why so I asked to speak to the manager. When I spoke to him, he told me that he couldn't make my grandson's meal to go that he would have to eat it in the restaurant and he continued to argue with me about it after I told him I have ordered it to go in the past. I explained that we cannot eat in the restaurant because it's late and we have to get home. I went in the restaurant and he told me he couldn't understand English or speak English and told me that he would have to use an interpreter (the waitress) to speak to me. One of the cooks jumped in and told me he couldn't cook a small portion of teriyaki chicken to go. Why???? This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard - no restaurants ever tell me a kid meal can't be to go. So because my grandson couldn't get his kids meal, I canceled the entire order and I will never go back there again. We usually have large family dinners, but will no longer come to this restaurant anymore. Instead, I went to The Show in ordered Chinese food and sushi and it was amazing! I will definitely be going back there. And my sushi was so much cheaper than Amatsu. Entire restaurant was empty, there was only one couple at 7:30pm. That right there says it all. Our food is usually really good here but DO NOT go in when it's busy. I understand things take longer when its busy but we saw our server maybe 3 times the whole time we were there, she didnt greet us or offer any drink refills (not even water), and we didnt receive one of our items we ordered and they still tried to charge us for it. We were waiting so long for the bill somebody else has to do it for her. Multiple other tables that got sat after us were checked out before us. Surprisingly good asian food considering the extensive menu covered Japanese and Korean food. The dol sot bibimbap was perfect, the super hot stone pot scorched the rice crisply. Came from Eugene to have dinner, luckily came right at 5pm when they reopen for dinner hours. Fish was very fresh- this was probably the closest from Eugene to get good quality sashimi! And exceptional service by staff. Also added two of the sushi roll specials onto our order by recommendation of the staff: Steeler and Tiger Roll- liked Steeler Roll better between the two, and wish I also tried the Toro Heaven. We used to frequent Aomatsu very regularly but this place has changed a lot...and not for the better. Tonight was the last straw. Almost $80 in food and the portion sizes are out of control. They have become so stingy with their portion sizes, it borders on comical. Yes, inflation is a thing and food prices are rising, but they have risen their prices to compensate and yet still provide shameless portion sizes. This has been a consistent thing and I won't be rewarding their bad behavior any longer. I'm a "vote with my wallet" type of consumer and usually don't leave negative reviews, but this type of behavior should be named and shamed. Portion sizes are probably 50% of pre-pandemic sizes, while almost 30% more expensive. I won't support this restaurant anymore, and that's unfortunate. They have a great staff but the owners are sinking the place imo. read more

This is my first time trying Aomatsu, and I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered a lunch sushi combination (3 pc tuna sashimi, 4 pc sushi, 6 pc cucumbers), a lion king roll, the moby dick roll, and 2 orders of salmon nigiri. Everything tasted really fresh, and the service was quick and friendly. I'm leaving 4 stars for a few reasons. For one, I wish the menu would have pointed out which rolls are fresh rolls and which are baked. The lion king roll description didn't say that the roll would be baked, but it was baked.. not really what I was looking for so I was a bit disappointed. I was also disappointed with the size/number of rolls in the moby dick roll. The lion king came out with 8 decent sized rolls. The moby dick had 5 rolls and were much smaller. I love their spicy mango roll - its not actually called that but I forget the name. They also have spicy tuna/salmon hand rolls which are fire.
