I came by to get a simple haircut after seeing great reviews on Yelp - my hair grows super fast, so I'm always in the search for a good hairstylist that won't break my wallet from my frequent haircuts. There's just two people working here - it's run by a old Chinese couple - so I was a bit worried about a long wait; fortunately, I waited around only 10 minutes when I came in around 5pm on a Saturday. The lady who cut my hair was very nice and experienced, and definitely took lots of care and attention to my cut - I was quite happy with how it turned out. Prices are unparalleled, though (at least from my experience in the neighbourhood) - only $13 + tip (cash only!) for my haircut. A simple mom and pop barber shop who do a fantastic job at what they're best at for a fair price. I had such a fun time talking with both of them in Cantonese (they're fluent in Mandarin and Taisan too!). The wife cut, wash, and dyed my hair. At first I was skeptical because I walked in and I kept track of who went before me and it was quite busy today. But that all went away once I sat down and allowed her to snip away! ‍. I appreciated how they take their time with every customer cause it's just the two of them cutting hair so it's definitely QUALITY over QUANTITY . Overall, if you're around the area and you don't feel like making a reservation I'd suggest popping in and see if they're not too busy. This is my first time ever writing a review but my experience was so bad here that I felt like I needed to. I only wanted a slight trim because I recently got a perm which I told them about. I even showed a picture of what I wanted. They then proceeded to cut ALL of my hair off and my recently permed hair became a buzzcut. The husband was tied up with a picky customer who kept asking for his feedback/opinion on her hair, but he was very patient and nice. The lady took her time and was very meticulous in cutting my hair, but she wasn't slow. Just paid attention to detail and efficient. I'm so happy with my first haircut since moving to Boston. This is located in a basement of a small apartment building on the side streets of Boston's Chinatown. I usually go to Chinatown for haircuts, and this is my secondary choice for a haircut in Boston's Chinatown. It is my primary choice if I am extremely lazy to speak Cantonese Chinese, so the stylists who work here can speak English. A guy that I played basketball, tennis and poker with referred me to this place. $12 for a haircut is actually a couple dollars more compared to the other stylists I have been to in Boston's Chinatown. It's not the nicest or the most luxurious interior, but this place can get the job done well. If you ask them to cut your hair short, they will cut it really short, but the hair on my head grows fairly fast, so I am usually fine with short hair for about a week. Allow more than 15 minutes, because the older lady who cuts my hair takes as much time as she can. The place can get busy on weekend afternoons because a lot of older and also somewhat elderly Chinese men like to visit this place. Sometimes, I have to wait for a while for a haircut, so singing some Cantonese Chinese songs mentally in front of the somewhat old TV can make the wait bearable, especially if you studied some Chinese characters. I have short hair and am very particular since any mess up tends to be obvious. Boston haircut is notoriously expensive, so when I chance upon Kalai and the good reviews, I was doubtful. With my tight budget, I decided to take the chance. The moment I stepped in, I felt at home. There are reviewers who mentioned that the hairdressers and customers are unfriendly/do not smile. For me, that's nothing out of the ordinary. The haircut lasted a while as the lady meticulously cut my hair according to what I've shown her. The last star is for the length. It's shorter than I requested. It grew out nicely and people around me told me it was a great length, but I felt a little meh for a few weeks. Nothing major, just a little awkward/uncomfortable. The wash is therapeutic, but they use supermarket shampoo and conditioner so just take note. The place definitely has a mom and pop feel to it, with some random hair products and water bottles & plastic containers filled with unknown stuff strewn throughout the place. A Chinese couple owns this place and always makes me feel at home when I come. Probably the cheapest place to get a hair cut in the city ($12 for a mens cut!!!) I can't speak for more complicated cuts, but I'm always satisfied with the cut I get. Their business is thankfully open many hours of the day / even on weekends so I'm always able to find time in my schedule to come get a cut. They speak some broken English but it's enough to communicate! (Unfortunately, I don't speak Mandarin, but I've definitely was able to have good conversations with them). Review is for women's haircut The bottom line is that if you are not into the frills, and the type who would eat at a hole in the wall place in the Chinatown because they serve good food at low cost even though it means you have to share a table with strangers elbow to elbow and bus your own table, you might want to get your hair cut here. I needed a simple maintenance cut for my shoulder length hair, and always only begrudgingly paid for the shampoo and blow-dry since what's the point, I'm going straight home and gonna shower later. Here, no wash, simply old style misting of my hair, deliberate and well paced strokes, and I walked out with a nice refreshed look and only 15 plus tip out of pocket. I'm happy with the result, as well as the process. The hairdressers (a couple) were obviously friends with most of the customers there, and the place got that relaxed old timey feel as if you were in a time capsule. The lady took her time, didn't rush me when I told her I needed to finish typing an email, and gently asked about my life and sought feedback throughout the cut. I've always felt bad for holding them from going home but they always made sure every customer got their hair cut before they leave. Just so you know, you should probably call ahead and ask how long the wait would be if you come. I came around 5:30-6 and there were at least 4 or 5 people waiting. I got my hair cut around 7:40, well past their closing time! Forgot to mention, it's cash only. Haircuts are priced under $20, but don't forget to tip, the price is much lower than other places! Also, I've never had a bad experience with how they treated me. They were always kind and never disrespectful. If you were given rude treatment, chances are you did something that deserved it. So we were walking around Chinatown on Saturday to find an easy place for the fiancé to get a haircut. Turns out, it's not easy in this area! Multiple places I called quoted a charge $25-38. Really? Men's cuts are usually $15 back in San Francisco Chinatown unless you're prepping for a runway or you're a male beach model. Anyway finally I called up this place on Yelp and heard the magical words of $12. So we walked a couple blocks and went down a few stairs to somewhat of a basement shop with around 3-6 salon stools and a waiting area. An older couple both were simultaneously cutting two customers' hair, but we waited maybe 10 minutes before the fiancé was called up. We showed the man a picture of his previous haircut (which he got back in San Francisco, & was not expensive nor hard to do). After a good 10 minutes of snipping, voilà, looked just like the previous cut from the other salon!! I got my haircut with minimal fuss and opted for a wash. The soaping was done while I was seated on the barber's chair, which was somewhat strange. It was only later that I realized that that was necessary due to the awkward positioning of the faucet in the shop. Anyhow, the haircut plus wash came to a total of $18 before tips, which was a real steal for Boston standards. I have long hair and he takes his time to cut it. He's really kind, compassionate, and family oriented. He speaks really good English and is fluent in Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin). Be sure to tip well because this place has not changed in prices for a while and they could easily bring the price up due to the competition around the area. Visited this salon yesterday. The Chinese name is Fei Yang. It's on a small alley in Chinatown. The hairdresser was really, really good and I was pleasantly surprised. I have very thick hair and the lady washed my hair twice very thoroughly (not to mention the massage). Contrary to a lot of barbers who only spend a maximum of 15 minutes on men's hair, my barber spent almost 30 minutes on mine. You can feel that she was really detailed and meticulous. After the cut my wife commented that my hair looks really good, much better than some other places I've been to which charges a lot more. She was great and cut it exactly as I wanted. I think this would be great if you have Asian hair and are looking for a great haircut cheap. I usually get my haircut at Dellaria.
