I came to Kalypso for their microdermabrasion and 12 layer facial. I live in the area and was looking for a new esthetician....i wanted to like this place. With that being said, I arrived on time for my appointment, was greeted and told it would be a few minutes, they were having an event. No problem! The spa is quite tiny, two small rooms divided by a chest height room divider. I was guided into one room where I could see a gentleman getting a procedure done in the other. There were points where he was moaning in pain, apparently he was getting fillers done. I should have gotten up to leave and that point but as i said, want to give the place a chance. I didn't catch the name of the woman providing my facial, i assume she's the owner.She was very sweet, and tried to make small talk. This is the first time I've had a facial with gloves on but like i said i was going with the flow...She cleaned my face and proceeded to use the microdermabrasion machine. I asked about the facial and she wasn't aware that I wanted that, even though the groupon was for microdermabrasion and facial. The facial consisted of a hot towel in lieu of steaming to open my pores, extraction, a moisturizing mask and moisturizer. All the boxes were checked but it was not a legitimate facial. It felt super rushed; from the time i walked in the door to the time i paid was a total of 30minutes. As i said i wanted to give Kalypso a chance. Previous reviews seemed promising but i had a negative experience. I would hope this is not typically the case but I'm not willing to come back. read more

I had been facing severe cystic acne for three years, which also caused me to have very deep and dark acne scars. Going to Kalypso spa not only helped improve my skin from the outside but also helped me find out that my acne problem was being caused by a dairy allergy that I was not aware of. I have been going there for more than a year and I am more than satisfied, I do not have those pimples anymore. I have received many compliments on my skin. The micro needling treatment is wonderful for treating acne scars and currently my scars are almost unnoticeable. The woman & space get 5 starts, the service... well once my groupon expires I won't be back. She is very nice & personable. The space is clean, peaceful & thoughtful. The microdermabrasion portion of the 30 min facial is about 3 min. She runs the wand over deeper lines a few extra times, but it's a quick sweep of the face... the rest is hot towel action & misting. I had the best facial experience so far with a lovely SPA professional, Valerie. The place is super cozy and only has a couple of beds, but huge variety of creams and masks and moisturizers. Angeliki, my massage therapist, provided an excellent bamboo massage treatment, which was exactly what my mind and body desperately needed. I found this place on Groupon and they were offering a really good deal for a microdermabrasion treatment. Being someone who suffers from acne prone/ sensitive skin, I've always wanted to try it. I purchased the Groupon for the treatment and made an appointment for three days later. Upon arriving, I was greeted by the friendliest woman. The space is small but very clean and welcoming. It made me feel at home and at ease. The microdermabrasion was painless and she even threw in a facial for no charge. After the treatment I saw an immediate difference in the quality of my skin. I ordered a Living Social deal for this place which was $170 for 5 micro facials. I scheduled my first appointment and the day before received a REMINDER text from the place. It said " Hi Taylor Reminder for tom at 3pm". So naturally I travel to Astoria from Kew Gardens (45 minutes) and arrive at 2:45pm but there is no one there and there is a padlock on the outside of the door. I call and no one answers. I wait until 3pm and then leave because it was freezing out. The woman ends up calling my phone and blames me for not confirming. She insists that the text was to confirm but i checked the texts multiple times to make sure it was just a reminder, which it was. She then tells me she needed to leave because she had to go home and asks if I live near by and can come back another day. No way would I recommend this place. read more

I have been going to Angeliki for 5 years now - after the first Groupon, I was hooked! I have acne scars and dark spots, and prone to deep breakouts. Unlike most places, she actually looks at and identifies my skin issues, and customizes treatments for my specific needs. I go for peels and microdermabrasion facials, as well as eye and neck treatments (I'm 50), and over time, my skin has been transformed. I now go to her every month for maintenance. I used to go to see her all the way from Bay Ridge, but now I live in Astoria, so perfect! I won't allow anyone else to touch my skin anymore! The last time I was there I wanted to do micro needling,because I was happiest with results before, so we agreed that I will come back to do micro needling again. DO NOT RECOMMEND. I bought a Groupon for 6 sessions of Velashape. Firstly, this is a very small place with one room and two beds (with a divider), and one esthetician, who I believe is also the owner. Not really a big deal to me, but just noting. For Velashape, her sessions felt pretty short. I'd maybe get 15 minutes for the area I chose, each session, when other places have given me 30 minutes total for that same area per session. That basically explains why the price is so low on Groupon. Due to an appointment time mix-up, and because she writes them down in a book, I began texting her to confirm appointments (there are also other reviews where she has mixed up/forgotten a client's appointment). Texting her worked fine, until I needed a reminder of my appointment for the last session, where things took a horrible turn. She said it was the next day, but when I show up she wasn't there, just to find out she had mistakenly told me the wrong day. When I tried to reconfirm the appointment, she confirmed the correct date/time while ultimately saying I was bothering her and being disrespectful, which is absolutely absurd. I gave her a call to reassure her I meant no disrespect, and then her true, nasty attitude came out. After repeating I was bothering her, she proceeded to say I never paid the Groupon tax, WHICH IS HER JOB AS THE MERCHANT TO CHARGE IMMEDIATELY AFTER REDEEMING THE VOUCHER, and that I never paid gratuity. She never mentioned the Groupon tax or tipping during the 5 WEEKS I was going to this spa, and basically made it seem like she was being taken advantage of which is ridiculous since I PAID for the services, and had been a good client. I was actually going to tip her at the end of my 6 sessions, but because of her horrible, unprofessional attitude, I gave up the last session, and will never go back. I'm thankful to Groupon for giving me a partial credit due to this. There are so many great spas in NYC, and this is not one of them. This lady needs to take some business management courses, start using a digital appointment/calendar system, and learn how to communicate and treat clients with respect, and maybe her business will grow beyond what it is now. read more
