This place offers everything you need, and depending on what you're looking for, you have options. Not for everything though. Typical beauty salon carrying hair supplies, nail supplies, makeup, skin care products, hygiene and toiletry items, etc. I came to pick up hair supplies, and they had all I needed. On the way to the counter, I grabbed a color correction concealer, (which works). They also have shaving razors but not the venus refills I needed. Great location at the N/W 30th ave stop. Was looking for some cheap lip gloss and chapstick. It seemed like they were running low on items and some items were missing. I was able to pick up 2 matte lip colors and 1 lipgloss. There was no line so I was able to cash out right away. read more

I agree! Solana is the best!!!!! We're very lucky to have a place like this on 30th Avenue, and so near the train! I went in once looking for Bed Head hair wax by TIGI. They had virtually every other product by TIGI, so I was surprised they didn't sell the hair wax. It's a popular enough product, but usually very hard to find. I told the guy (tall, good looking Asian man -- VERY friendly and helpful) that I was looking for Bed Head hair wax and I suggested they should carry it as it's a good seller. THE VERY NEXT TIME I went to Solana... Guess what I found on the shelves! A well stocked supply of the product I wantd! Another time I came in looking for parrafin wax and a heating unit to melt it with. I got a packet of great lavender antibacterial wax, but they sold me the wrong heating unit. After a few VERY messy attempts at using it (ultimately resulting in my realization that I got the wrong heater) I brought it back to Solana. Again, I dealt with the same man. Tall, good looking Asian guy. He's the one who sold me the product. He immediately offered me a credit card refund... it was only for in-store credit, but I was still very pleased considering their No Refunds policy posted at the checkout. I told him I was going out of town so I wouldn't be back for a few weeks. Two weeks or so later, I come back to Solana just to browse. Not even thinking about my parrafin heater... The same guy recognized me (God, how I LOVE mom-and-pop shops!!!!!) and immediately approcahed me to give me an update on the heater. He said it would be a few more days. I came back in a few days and the same guy was very sad to tell me they could not order the product I wanted, so then and there he gave me my money back. WHAT A GENTLEMAN! THISSSSSSSS is how you do business, people! Take a note from Solana if you run a shop in Astoria. They know what they're doing and they make their customers WANT TO COME BACK! And for those of you in Astoria looking for a place to get all your stuff (And I mean all!!! These guys have EVERYTHING! And at GOOD PRICES, too!) You'll be very glad you stopped in!!! read more

I love Solana. Not only do I buy items there for my personal use, but I have found it to be an excellent resource for buying all manner of items for both male and female actors I cast in my plays. I can find hair color, wigs, lipsticks and eyeliners for different looks, bandanas, earrings, etc. No, I cannot buy every last item I need but I cannot do that anywhere. But if I find in a pinch that we need something, it is easy to get to this store from the theatre district and find it. read more

I like this place because they sell basic, low-end toiletries like Ivory soap and Suave shampoo but they also sell salon grade products. I bought some MOP (Modern Organic Products) shampoo from here. The selection of products is much better than the run down Eckerd's a few doors down. read more

Well-stocked, low-priced beauty supply store with higher end brands than the beauty supplies in the Bronx and Lower Westchester. They carry Essie and OPI nail polish, and Kerastase hair products. The hair color section is well-stocked and they always have popular colors like black and dark brown, which are annoyingly sold out most places. Their color and brand selection can only be rivaled by Ricky's NYC. Check out their wide selection of brushes. They sell both Creative and a less expensive line that is so reasonable for the quality. Decorative clips, falsies, and cute mirror compacts....I can kill an hour in there. read more

I come here to buy Essie nail polishes (the best brand, IMO, better than Chanel) and other implements. Solana has a great selection of high-end hair products, I am pretty sure they're authentic. I've purchased Redken, Bumble and Bumble, and a couple others here. The store is quite cramped and crowded, and some of the low-end products look suspect (i.e. proctor and gamble soaps with old labels) but much cheaper than Rite Aid next door. Service is brisk, but friendly. I will continue to go here for my beauty products instead of frequenting a chain. read more

This place does not have a great selection at all. I came for a makeup brush and they only had 3 to choose from. As far as the makeup selection, they've got your basics (maybelline etc) but nothing to really get excited over. The prices are no better than your cvs prices. Don't make the long trip to go here. Tis... alright. While they have more beauty supplies than your basic drugstore, I've seen a bigger selection at other supply stores, namely Jet in Brooklyn. They didn't even have a big nail polish area, and i would say no more than 25 Essie colors... come on people! Essie has like a million shades! I also had a question about hair dyes and had to wait 15 minutes for someone to come out from the back to help me. Then as he told me what i should get, a gay customer (yes, i have radar), told me that i actually should go a different route. Now WHO, prey tell, do you think i should trust? Wayyyyyy too expensive!!! It doesnt make sense for eye lashes that cost me $3 in another beauty supply to cost me $6 there! They're not that stocked on weaves and other things that you can find elsewhere. They're friendly and helpful people but way too overpriced. read more

I've been a customer for over 5 years. But, I will never be back. It's always been a bit rude in Solana. I overlooked it because.. well, it's NY and also, I knew what I needed already so not having someone to offer help or be helpful wasn't a deal breaker. But, today I saw the greed excuse me GREED. I purchased two bottles of hair dye, both marked for the usual price of $3.99 only to have the girl at the counter ring them both up for $4.49. When I showed her price clearly marked price on the bottle for $3.99 she said, 0h, that's the TAX. And when I explained to her that was absolutely not the tax. She then said that the price went up to $4.49 per bottle. I again showed her the bottle which had clearly been priced by her store for $3.99 and she again said no the price is now $4.99 and that's what you have to pay. Seriously? You lie saying it's TAX and then you show your greed? Not my fault your store went up on all their prices and didn't label products with the correct ones. It's not even the money it's the crazy rudeness I was given with having to pay more than what was priced. GO TO OPTIMA ON STINEWAY.
