Stopped by Kama for Chicago Restaurant Week and by far it's my favorite menu for CRW. I enjoyed the crispy potatoes, kereala fish curry (mahi mahi) and kulfi ice cream. Everything was extremely flavorful and I loved the extensive drink menu which includes several zero proof cocktails. The restaurant was incredibly busy (probably because of CRW) and service was very quick. My friend and I felt a bit rushed to leave, but understandable given how busy it was. I came here thanks to a recommendation from a friend and I loved it. I got the restaurant week deal with the lamb shank vindaloo, the coconut kheer brûlée, and the paneer lemon tadka. I will say that the paneer lemon tadka was probably not something I would get again as I wish it d more lemon flavor and the sauce was a bit light. The lamb shank vindaloo was amazing although fair warning I got mild and it was still spicy. Finally I wrapped it up with the coconut kheer brûlée and it was great. I was very happy with my choices and the atmosphere was great for a date night. I will warn you that this restaurant does change an additional 5% restaurant fee and if you come during restaurant week there is a guaranteed gratuity of 20%. We had a couple gift cards to Kama, so we decided to check out this location. We had previously only been to the location in La Grange. To start, we all ordered a cocktail. I ordered the J'ADORE 75. I'd highly recommend it. It was very good; it was hard to taste the alcohol (in a good way)! For appetizers, we ordered the samosas and the eggplant bharta with garlic naan. I wasn't really sure what to expect with the eggplant, but I loved that it was more of a sauce rather than full eggplants. The flavor was really good. For my entree, I got the Kerala Fish Curry. The catch of the day was halibut, priced at $46. I decided to go for the Kama Kaze spice level 7. It honestly was the right amount of spice for me. Our server told us his personal limit was 8, and at 9 and 10, the managers of the restaurant who had tried 10 were sweating. I feel like they nickel and dime a bit too much here. I don't know why extra spice would be a whole $1. Also, the amount of naan really added up too. The small surprise charges took away from the experience a bit. read more

First, we know Indian food, especially South Indian (Kerala). Given that, the fish Molly (medium heat) was excellent. The curry was so flavorful and spiced just right. Our favorite dish was the cauliflower, however. This dish was a creative fusion and not really Indian, but charred w goat cheese so good!! The prawn dish was also excellent! We ordered naan somewhat late and it's homemade so takes awhile to serve, but !!! amazing (so order upfront). The yogurt (Raita) was somewhat disappointing. This usually has cucumber and fresh coriander, spices, and this version was boring or lackluster. Their mixed drinks, like a old fashion was super tasty, but the pour can not be called generous--sort of the opposite! Wine pour was also less than norm. The restaurant is small but clean and service was responsive and friendly. We will come back for sure! read more

Decent sized space but it's a very popular spot so reservations are almost required. The restaurant had run out of a certain beer and we had a taste issue with a cocktail but our server knew alternative options for beers and was able to get the cocktail adjusted for us. Food in every category tasted great from our basic order of Tikka masala and vindaloo to the new to us short ribs and paneer lasagna. read more

We checked this place out for dinner and happened to be here during the tail end of happy hour. We took advantage of the half off apps deal and were very impressed. The potato's and salad were both tasty and my husband enjoyed the chicken. Both our cocktails (lemontini and old fashioned) were delicious although slightly on the sweeter side. We decided to order the paneer tikka masala and garlic naan as well and they were pretty decent. Overall we had a good time and enjoyed our time here. To quickly break it down: The food was good but nothing exceptional. The service is great. Both friendly and helpful. The drinks are creative and tasty. Definitely get one. If you want a good time I recommend getting a drink and splitting the lamb vindaloo. The lamb vindaloo was great and is the reason I am giving this place 4 stars instead of 3. The lamb was moist and tender and the vindaloo was rich and spicy (we asked them to make it spicy) if you like spice ask them to make it spicy level 8. The lump crab Samosa is good. It tastes pretty much like a crab cake. So if you're in the mood for a crab cake this is a great option. One thing I will say is they do not stump out on the crab. You definitely get your moneys worth. Although I love garlic naan I would skip it and just stick with rice. Our naan wasn't warm so it became hard and had little garlic taste. For the price I would say just skip it or get something else. The ravioli was good but nothing great. The curry it comes in was quite bland but the ravioli itself was tasty. It was cooked well and I enjoyed the cheese inside. But I would personally try something else. read more

Our server was lovely and attentive but felt like there was a huge push multiple times to order the most expensive dishes and make the bill higher. One of our last meals in Chicago we were craving Indian food and despite not having a reservation on a weekend were able to get a table reasonably quickly. We got the crispy chili potatoes, sous vide beef short rib, paneer ravioli, and garlic naan. Everything was very good and I especially loved the crispy chili potatoes and ravioli. I have never had ravioli Indian food mashup and it was excellent. I personally felt that the short rib didn't feel like it was even Indian food, but it was delicious none the less. I wanted pizza and got voted out by friends who wanted Indian food and honestly I think they were right, this place was well worth it. Very clearly a well loved restaurant as it was full and everyone there seemed to be having a great time. Really Fun New Restaurant in Wicker Park. Glad a great spot took over the Wynwood space. The space is really well designed and is perfect for hanging out with friends or a date. We came on a Friday night and sat at the bar. Service was excellent and quick. They had a unique cocktail program. A lot of classics with some flavor twists to match the cuisine. Can definitely recommend their Gin and Tonic. We got the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Lamb Shank Vindaloo. Both were excellent! My only gripe was that the lamb shank was a bit tough to eat. I think it may be a better take out dish so you eat it without inhabitation and get everything off the bone! If the prices were 20% lower, I'd give this a four or five-star review. And maybe I made a mistake going during restaurant week, when pretentiousness becomes as common as wearing green on St. Patrick's Day. But, come on, the masala was good, but nothing terribly memorable. We came in to get a break from Wicker Park Fest and luckily, the waiter was able to find a spot for us even though it was really busy. We ordered the malai kofta and dal makhani and asked for "very spicy." I think the spice was great but I wouldn't classify it as very spicy. When I go to authentic Thai restaurants I usually get level 3 or 4 spice out of 5. I'd say this is about the same, not overly spicy, which I enjoyed. Everything was delicious! We didn't save enough room for dessert this time but some items on the dessert menu were definitely catching our eye. I think it's this place is a great addition to the neighborhood! read more

I wanted to try the violet colored gin cocktail but didn't get the chance. It looks great and our server said it was her favorite. Next time. We got in last minute on Friday, no rsvp and only one table left! Score. The place was packed. We tried the samosas, the garlic and butter naan, lamb, tiki masala, and some basmati rice. Everything was good. No complaints! Definitely want to try some other dishes as well, but we went with the classics to get our order in before the kitchen closed. Perhaps I came in with too high of hopes for this place. Chicago has been in somewhat of a golden age of modern Indian cuisine, with Rooh, Vajra, Indienne and so many other great places opening up in the last few years I was thinking this would be another addition to the list. The meal started off with a promising start with delicious samosas and accompanying sauces that were thick and flavorful (which I prefer to the thinned out sauces) and a beautiful malai kofta with a flavorful cashew tomato sauce. After that though, everything else was a dud. I know it recently opened but didn't get a lot of great direction from the staff on must-order dishes (or at least it didn't sound convincing/knowledgeable). Didn't love the lamb shank nor the cauliflower saag dish. Drinks were hit or miss as well. I like the decor in the bathroom though? With other such great dining options in Chicago, this won't be a return for me. read more

We came for their amazing restaurant week menu recommended by a friend and wow. We got so much food it was incredible for only $42 per person. My lamb was so tender and out of this world with the harissa spicy sauce. My husband had the curry fish that was so flavorful. The drinks were different very exotic and delicious different flavor. Not your typical drinks with unique spices which made it more fun and flavorful. The staff was super friendly and answered all our questions. I had high expectations and hopes for Kama but unfortunately they fell a bit flat. A brief run down: The cocktails were great, the old fashioned is unique and good and the Smokin Berries was awesome! The sweet potato chaat was too sweet for my liking and kind of resembled a sweet bbq sauce- wouldn't recommend. The Prawns Molly was the biggest miss of the night. The flavor was good, but the execution was lacking. There were only 3 shrimps in the entire dish and they were very overcooked! They were tough to cut and eat. For the price point, I was very disappointed. My friend on the other hand got the lamb chop masala and loved it. I saw some reviews about bad service, that certainly wasn't the case for us. Went on a Saturday night at 5:30 and got two seats at the bar. They were at capacity so our seating was fortuitous. Great vibe and great service throughout the evening. We started with samosas and the chips and chutney. Chicken tika masala and chicken vindaloo followed (my cohort won't eat lamb but I would absolutely get it next go). We had some garlic naan as well. For two people we were stuffed with that. We asked for spicy and it didn't disappoint- however the spicy was thoughtful as you could still taste the food. The drinks are well thought out and complex. Consult your bartender to match your tastes - it's hard to tell from the menu what the final product will taste like. Bartenders are great. We'll be back! read more

A fantastic new Indian restaurant in Chicago. KAMA has a great ambiance, excellent service, and delicious food. We went to Kama to celebrate late Valentine's Day and we had a great time. We both ordered mocktails, Goan Blossom & Mango lassi, sweet potato chaat for appetizer, malai kofta and chicken rogansjosh with side of butter & garlic naan. Mocktails were 10/10. I wish sweet potato chaat was just potato with very sweet chutney. It wasn't our favorite. The main course was amazing but SPICY. Our server said spice level of 8-10 is close to desi spicy, but I'll advise others to get spice level below 8 unless you LOVE SUPER SPICY FOOD. Overall the food was well seasoned and enjoyable! The restaurant is intimate with low lighting making it ideal for a date night. The food service was well paced and the staff accommodating for our stroller. The only sticker shock was the sea bass as the portion was very small for the price. My favorite was the lamb as it was perfectly spiced at medium spice and second place were the mussels only because it could have used some spice to offset the sweetness. I was really excited for the drinks- mine were good but after trying some of my friends, I'd give the drinks alone a 4. The food fell super flat. Table for Two- We recommend making reservations at Kama if you don't want to feel rushed, which is our fault for not getting one ahead of time. The staff was friendly, and the service was fast. The drinks were really strong, so if you like your drinks having a strong alcoholic taste to them then we would recommend getting them! Our appetizers included the classic Samosas and Goan Mussels. The samosas were crispy and warm, dipped in the two sauces provided with the dish. Unfortunately, the mussels were a disappointment because they were cold; we believed if they had been hot, we would have enjoyed them more since the sauce was nicely seasoned. After our appetizers, we were served our main dishes, which were the Malai Kofta and chicken tikka masala. We additionally had garlic naan on the side with a bowl of rice. We first started with malai kofta, and like our other dishes, it was also lukewarm to our displeasure once again. The seasoning for the sauce was the best part of the dish. However, the main star being the dumplings fell well short of our expectations as we felt the flavors in the dumplings were lacking. Next, we went on to the next dish, which was the renowned chicken tikka masala. Similarly to the other dishes besides the samosas, we were once again disappointed by the temperature of the main star of the night. The chicken was tender and not dry at all. The sauce was also nicely seasoned and went very well with the rice. We believe if the chicken tikka masala was a lot warmer, then it would've met our expectations, but it simply did not that night. Overall, the restaurant was unimpressive. With the prices of the dishes, the food fell short. read more

However the most disappointing thing though was service. They were nice but it took 45 min to get our table even after registration. Other than it was great.
