I had an incredible experience today with Patricia at Kama'aina Acupuncture. I'm somewhat of an acupuncture newbie. I've experienced acupuncture here and there before, but never sought it out on my own to address a problem I was having. So, I felt openminded about acupuncture, but I wasn't a true believer or anything. At least not before today! I have been dealing with stress and anxiety lately that has overwhelmed my usual coping strategies. So, I thought I would give acupuncture a try. I read the reviews, and decided to give Kama'aina Acupuncture a try. I called in the morning and was able to make an appointment for about an hour later, which was cool! I arrived and Patricia greeted me. She was warm, kind, grounded, and empathetic. She exuded a relaxed sense of calm and competence and care that helped put me at ease talking about the challenges that I've been dealing with. Her compassion was palpable. I was so grateful. Then, she led me up to the treatment room, and I lay back in a recliner with a gorgeous view of the sky and she put a whole bunch of needles in me and a whole bunch of tissues in my right hand in case I needed to cry as things started moving. I felt more peaceful and grounded during the hour I spent in that chair than I had in I can remember feeling in the entire last year. My mind was calm and capacious. My thoughts weren't racing, as had become their habit. I could really and truly rest. When challenging thoughts arose or painful feelings surfaced, there was just so much more room for those experiences inside of me. I was able to metabolize them in a healthier way. Tears did flow and it felt healthy and cleansing, like the healing I need had begun. I walked away transformed. For the rest of the day, I felt calm and relaxed, centered and grounded. I was able to be present and enjoy myself in a way that I've really missed. I'm writing this late the same night - I don't know how long the effects of this will last, but it would have been worth it if it were only effective for the hour that the needles were in my body. But, it wasn't effective just for that hour. It has been effective for all of the hours since then. I was able to take a nap and to fall asleep easily and wake up without racing thoughts. I'm feeling at peace with myself in a way that I am totally treasuring. I didn't know acupuncture could be like this. I didn't know. I am in awe of this experience. I am so so so so so so grateful. Having had back problems/bulging disc for about a year now I've had to find ways to alleviate my pain so I consistently go to the chiropractor for regular adjustments. Since I was also dealing with stress I wanted to try acupuncture so as I looked through my handy dandy yelp app I came across this place! For the first time ever I was about to try acupuncture! So last year I made my first appointment with Tara, she was very nice, walked me through the process and told me about their SLIDING FEE POLICY: There's a $10 paperwork fee for the first visit and sliding fee is between $20-$45. As we started our appointment she first did cupping which felt great then placed the needles all through my back and ears. The whole experience was so relaxing. Since my first visit I've gotten much healthier which has somehow helped my overall back pain but recently it seems to be that my shoulders/trapz are always tight and tense hence my second appointment last week. I wasn't able to make Tara's hours so I met with Joe, he is supper nice and easy to talk to, really made me feel at ease. We went upstairs and this time there was no cupping involved. He was able to pin-point the PRESSURE-POINTS to my stress areas, from my feet all the way to my forehead, but most importantly my shoulders! With one needle placed at the top of each shoulder he said that would hit the upper back/shoulders area, at first I wasn't sure how that was possible but after it was all done I truly felt the difference! It's been a week now and I still feel great! Today was my first time getting acupuncture and cupping done for my lower back pain/strain. I love the area that this place is located. Less like city life to me. Anyway, there was a bit of a wait, and Brandon mentioned that it was busy. It was funny, because I definitely couldn't tell that it was busy. The atmosphere there is so calm, quiet, and relaxing. It definitely helped with my anxiety going to a new business. Brandon was super kind and made sure that I was comfortable the entire time. He was knowledgeable and made sure to provide me with all of the details about what he would be doing, how everything would feel, and just generally what I could expect while getting stabbed with many little needles. Lol. He even provided information about what I should expect and what I should avoid afterwards. Their sliding scale fee schedule is amazing as well. I'm a student so I am very, very broke, but still in need of this kind of care. I paid $20. Brandon was a serious life saver! My sister got horrible flu while we were on vacation. My brother, who is also an acupuncturist, begged me on the phone to get her in for a treatment and convinced me that they could "get the fever out" if it was treated early. We called Brandon on the second day and he took her in the same day. Her head was swollen, red, high fever, I had to use a wheelchair to get her from the hotel to his place. He treated both her and myself (as a preventative). As soon as we got back to the hotel, a lot of green fluid started coming out of her nose and she began throwing up. Her fever broke a few hours later. She recovered very quickly, in several days, and we were able to fly home in five days. I couldn't believe how quickly she got better. I also didn't get sick, which was a miracle since I stayed in the hotel room caring for her. Also, my stomach issues for the last sick months also cleared up as he treated my digestive channel! I'm a fan! Tarah accommodated me in for a late appointment for an ailing back. I wasn't sure of what to expect. Tarah sat me down and checked my pulse and asked me questions. I am confident that she will be able to help me with my other health issues! Once we were upstairs, she pulled a screen to separate me from another client...who by the way looked completely at ease and relaxed. Then she explained that she would some cupping prior to the acupuncture. I was relaxed and my back was feeling much better. Wow I can only say amazing things about this place. I saw all the great reviews and came right away. I am 35 years old and just recently had back surgery, and had major sciatic pain and numbness down my left leg since my L5 S1 fragmented and was pushing on my nerve. I also lost my left ankle reflex where I could not stand on my toes on that leg at all as it wouldn't hold my weight and I couldn't walk without limping. After surgery, my pain went away down my leg, but then came back to about a 6 out of 10 pain a few days later, which really sucked and was scary. The doctor didn't think my numbness would ever go away and my ankle wouldn't ever be back to normal, but I refused to believe that as I'm very active. I came into acupuncture a few days later, and literally the next morning, my sciatic nerve pain down my leg was a 2 out of 10 in pain. I couldn't believe it. After 3 more sessions over the next week, my numbness completely went away and now I have ZERO pain down my leg and stopped all pain medication. After a couple more weeks, my left reflex on my ankle came back! After seeing my doctor a couple weeks after that, I told him that I got better after acupuncture and he was in disbelief, but very happy to hear that I was healing. Anyway, it's now been a month and a half since surgery and I feel almost back to normal, and no longer have pain or limping. I went to both Patricia and Nohea multiple times and the pay scale is really great to help people of all financial backgrounds to get out of pain, but I for sure paid just about full price as they deserve it. I actually decided to do almost 30 needles the next time all over my back and legs to help with the other pain in my body that has persisted, and it helped my digestion and another chronic issue I had. What a happy *find*! I was hoping to get some pain relief and improve range of motion in several joints that had been bothering me. When I walked into the serene and welcoming space where Joe sees patients, I felt instantly calmed and more mindful of the importance of making time to take care of my health. I've been to a few wonderful practitioners, over the years, and I'm pleased to report that Joe is the "real deal". Excellent results in just one hour-long session in peaceful surroundings. After painless needle insertion, with meditative music softly playing, I leaned back in a comfortable easy chair and drifted off while the magic of healing happened. Joe is sensitive and very professional. It's obvious that he cares more about providing accessible health care than making money, yet he has created a beautiful place with a spa-like feeling where the mind and body can relax and lay down the burden of pain or discomfort. I have worked with Alicia (who has moved to a sister location) and Brandon. I think they are both amazing! I've met Joe and he seems like a really down-to-earth person as well. I started going for sinus relief and a hope of working on pain management and flexibility for my old injured right wrist. Alicia had managed to help me decrease pain. It wasn't really an issue but I do a lot of fitness activity and it was stressing it out. We did e-stim quite often on it. Well I have a new injury in the area and Alicia has moved so I started working with Brandon. He joked that he had a challenge finding my pulse and it's like I'm "running on fumes" - he wasn't kidding - he was dead on target. That is EXACTLY how I felt and still feel. We work on that though - he gives me some points for energy-revitalizing. Kama'aina Acupuncture is RIGHT NEXT DOOR to Waiola Shave Ice near Kapahulu Ave and kind of shares the same parking lot. The lot is mainly for KA but Waiola customers are allowed to park there. What I love about KA is that it's a sliding scale so it makes acupuncture affordable to all. I've been dealing with chronic lower back pain for years due to scoliosis and daily exercise so I decided to treat myself to acupuncture for my birthday. After reading the reviews, I gave them a call, and the wonderful Ryoko answered my call and made my appointment (June 23, at 2pm)--thank goodness I finished work early that day! This establishment is RIGHT NEXT DOOR to Waiola Shave Ice near Kapahulu Ave. There is a good amount of parking (and you can always treat yourself to some shave ice after your appointment). I have severe shoulder and back pain and stiffness due to my desk job, seven days a week! Massages helped a bit but I always wanted to try acupuncture and cupping! My session yesterday consisted of a mild massage and cupping, it was so relaxing! Yes, the reviews mentioned that you get treated in a room while other patients are receiving services. I honestly did not have a problem with that at all, we're here to get treatment. I didn't have a problem taking off my blouse and putting it on in front of other people. Its now a day after my treatment and of course I got the cupping bruises (hickies! LOL) and it doesn't hurt at all. There is two that are on my shoulders that are a bit tender, but its the painful pleasure kind! I already feel a little relief in my back, there's way less tension and stiffness than before! After two days of severe pain in my low back, a Western doctors opinion and injection, and slight lost of hope I called Kama'aina Acupuncture in desperation. Went to Kama'aina Acupuncture after experiencing a painful neck strain. I could hardly move my upper body without being in paralyzing pain. A friend referred me to Kama'aina Acupuncture after she had had a similar experience weeks prior. I called that same day and spoke with Nohea, who kindly offered to take me in within the hour. My hero! The location was pretty easy to find, and had great parking for their business directly in front of the office. I felt instantly at ease walking in as it was quiet, away from the highway, with tranquil music playing softly. I filled out the new patient information and reviewed my concerns with Nohea. She recommended cupping to enhance the treatment since I had so much tension. It was my first experience with cupping and acupuncture at the same time while in so much pain, but Nohea helped me relax the best I could and was extremely gentle. I even fell asleep to my surprise! I was told that the pain would get worse before it got better, which honestly it really did. About half way into the next day I felt the tension relax and finally could feel some relief. I really owe it all to Kama'aina Acupuncture! Their payment method is a sliding scale based on what you believe your experience is worth. 10/10 recommend Kama'aina Acupuncture. I had an unrelenting cough that resulted in working from home and several cancelled commitments in the course of six weeks. I saw several doctors, tried steroid inhalers, antibiotics, changing my diet--nothing worked. It was exhausting to perform basic tasks and I thought it might never go away after too many worst-case scenario google searches. A friend suggested acupuncture and I started seeing Brandon at Kama`aina Acupuncture. I absolutely adore Brandon. Not only is he beautiful, but also has so much aloha in his heart. He is cognizant so warm and gentle. When I first met him, I was horrified to share my personal health information. He was so nice and made me feel comfortable. I love his grounded energy, which effectively calms me. I hate needles, but he just knows how to create a relaxing space. When I get nervous, I perspire A LOT. I run hot and I get super gross in island humidity. He didn't make me feel like a disgusting slob (which I am) and casually asked me how my day was going as he placed the needles. He really is the best. I highly recommend anyone to give acupuncture a shot if Western medicine isn't working for you. I should warn you that Brandon is a beautiful man. I know this sounds super insecure and TMI, but I try a little harder to look presentable when I do acupuncture. I heard of Kamaaina Acupuncture From one of my friends. Although Kaimuki was out-of-the-way for me considering I lived in Ewa, I decided to take a chance and made an appointment with Brandon. He was friendly and professional. The reason that I went for acupuncture was tendonitis in my forearms and upper arms. I went once a week for 6-8 weeks and saw significant improvements in pain. The office is located right next to Waiola shave ice off of Kapahulu Avenue. It is a two story building that is quite tiny like a small apartment. When you walk in, make sure you take your shoes off. During your first visit you do an initial consultation which cost $10 and the fee for acupuncture is a sliding scale between $20 and $45 per visit. I really appreciate the sliding scale as most places charge anywhere from $50-$75 per session. This truly makes acupuncture affordable to everyone. At the beginning of each session the acupuncturist will check your pulse and then you will go upstairs and either sit in a reclining chair or lay on a massage table for your treatments. There are no individual treatment rooms. There are three reclining chairs and two massage tables in the one treatment room so you will be sharing the space with others. This may or not Work for you if you like privacy. I just wanted to share the love for Kama'aina Acupuncture- if you are thinking about it just do it! They make you feel welcome, comfortable and are totally professional. I'm moving to the mainland so I hope I can find great acupuncturists there that are effective and adorable! Side note: I have been to several other acupuncturist and none of them seem to truly care as much about resolving my pain issues. So grateful to have found this place. read more

I was a little skeptical being in a community room while someone else may be getting treated at the same time, but it wasn't an issue at all. This place is amazing on so many levels. First of all, Joe is extremely gifted. He's a skilled practitioner who really knows his stuff. More than that, he's a healer, and he's really funny too. I was skeptical about acupuncture, mostly because I'm a wuss. From my very first visit, Joe kept me relaxed and informed, and the needles didn't hurt a bit. I went in for some issues with my knees and elbows, and after about six sessions, it feels like I have brand new knees! The pain in my knees is completely gone. My elbows are feeling a lot better too. He's working on some other health issues with me too, and I'm starting to feel a lot better. Other times I've gone in with a stiff neck or headache or nausea, and within minutes, the pain and discomfort is gone. So Joe's great for fixing you up, but what's really great about him, and one thing I really admire about him and how he runs his business, is his pay scale. You pay anywhere from $25 - $45 per visit, depending on what you can afford. Many acupuncturists charge $75, $100, or more for their services, and Joe is certainly amazing enough to command that fee, but he keeps his practice affordable so that acupuncture is accessible to more people. It's really helpful if you need acupuncture for long term treatment or want to incorporate it into your healthy lifestyle, but don't have bottomless pockets. I think it's incredibly generous of him, and I believe in supporting businesses with great core values. Bottom line - Kamaaina Acupuncture is amazing. Anyone who knows me knows I'm a firm believer in western medicine. Have a headache? Here's some medicine for that. Can't fall asleep? Here's the magic blue pill. I think you get the gist... Despite my allegiance to the pharmaceutical companies, I know far too well the fact that their pills and potions have failed to cure me of certain things that ail me. I have been suffering from neck and back pain for years, sometimes to the point that I just want to turtle up and cry. I've seen physical therapists, pain management doctors, and everything shy of a witch doctor and gotten little to no relief. When I lived in Tampa, I found a doctor who practiced both eastern and western medicine and introduced me to acupuncture. Suddenly, I noticed that my pain started to get better. After relocating here, I knew I needed to find a place that could replicate the extraordinary care I received so many years ago. Yesterday I had my first appointment with Brandon. Although I told him certain information, he was also able to tell things about me by just reading my pulse and looking at my tongue. I suffer from chronic back stiffness and pain and decided to try this place out. This was my first acupuncture session EVER and decided to go to the best place I could find on Yelp and boy was I glad I did. At first i wasn't sure what to think since I didn't have many friends that had experienced acupuncture. One of my friends raved about it two weeks ago and I decided to leap into it. What did I have to loose. Prior to heading over, I had an Intense massage that helped relieve some of the stiffness. However, i did notice that she worked mostly on my right side and probably ran out of time with my left. This was pretty obvious when I was checked out. Joe noticed that my left side was stiff as a board compared to my right. So, here came the needles. They were placed in my neck and down parts of my back. No pain whatsoever. Some slight burning sensations and pressure but that's about it. Occasionally, my muscles twitched, but there was really no pain. Then Joe worked on my inside ankles where I had been feeling some pain from wearing my giant snow boots while I was in the "Great North" of Ontario, Canada in Mid February - March, freezing my butt off in subzero temperatures. He went with Electroacupuncture there. I did my research. I'm a nerd, I know!!! It's a slight variation of TENS therapy called PENS. This really helped with pain. I can actually touch that area without having too much pain. Still not completely gone, but that's what hope to accomplish in my next session. UPDATE (Tuesday): Day 3 after my Electroacupuncture. Pain on my ankles is almost completely gone. Can't wait until my session on Friday. UPDATE (Friday): Ankle pain completely gone. Tried Cupping today. I had read about it a bit. There's nothing like getting hickey on your back to get blood circulating. Joe followed up with acupuncture and my back was more loose and started popping a bit now that I could flex a little more. I had cupping done and it went very smoothly. Joe was so great that I felt really at ease. Since it was my first time, Joe took the time to explain what he does and how acupuncture (and Chinese medicine) really help. I was running errands that day and I had a button up shirt. Next time, I will more than likely wear something a little easier to get on and off. There were other patients in the room and it was hard to maneuver the shirt so the other patients didn't see my ta-tas. read more

I have also had to chance to be treated by Joe. He is a little more laissez-faire than Tarah, so sometimes your appointment time isn't exactly met at the time agreed on, which is a little annoying and can seem unprofessional. I usually end up spending about an hour and a half at the office waiting + treatment. HOWEVER, he helped to clear up an irritated shoulder of mine that had bursitis and used tuina massage (Chinese massage) to stimulate the muscles and ease the tension. The pain and inflammation was gone right after treatment!! Joe was very kind to accomodate me and my request for receiving a bill of services to submit to insurance for reimbursement (the UHA 3000 has a $500 complementary medicine annual benefit). I choose to come here instead of the other practitioners within the UHA network because I genuinely like Tarah and Joe, and I want to support their healing practice!! P.S. Thank you Lord for those small needles :). I have been coming to Kamaaina Acupuncture for several weeks for problems with anxiety and stress. So far, I have left each session feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and feeling less anxious. I also believe acupuncture helps with my overall health. One thing i like about this place are the specialists. Joe is a great man who is very friendly and easy to talk to. He is knowledgeable and is obviously very passionate about his job. I appreciate the price of the sessions as well. I would have not taken the opportunity to use acupuncture as a way to help me with anxiety if it wasn't for the reasonable sliding rates. I love that Kamaaina acupuncture makes this healing practice accessible to those who normally cannot afford it. Another plus is that they do take walk-ins! read more

Brandon, Brandon, he's our man, if Joe can't do it, Brandon can!!! (And NO, I was never a cheerleader, BUT..) I thought I posted before (maybe last year) about Joe, but can't find it. Anywho, I was Dx with MS in 1998 and can usually FORGET I have it. (In fact most people are shocked when they "find out" (Gene Wu!) I have it.) Anyway, I do and sometimes it rears its ugly head. Weakness in legs usually, BUT I exercise, meditate and BREATHE (yoga has saved my life).If a act up is here, I try to get over it, if THAT doesn't help, I go to Kama Acu. I usually would see Joe, but he wasn't available, so I saw Brandon. He's fairly "newish" to acu, (3000 hrs of needling! not SO new) so I was a little nervous. BUT FOR NO REASON. He's AWESOME! He's found his calling. I went with weird feelings in my feet and left leg. Then he pulled out the WIRES and hooked me UP! yikes! but, trust. and let be. (This time was NOT the first time I met him.) It's a review I've meant to do a while ago. After an hour PLUS of needles (not elect. the whole time), I left and felt "ok." but next day, the feeling in my feet was gone and funny feeling on leg was also disappearing. YEAH! I've gone time and time again ANY day of the week. I know I'm in good hands. Thank you! A few things to know about this place: The "office" is in the waiting room, so if you have "private things," ask to talk upstairs away from strangers...but anyone usually ignores who's at the desk. (And when will you see those same people again?!) Also, the treatment room is ONE huge room with "EZ boy chairs" and a long bed thingy. (Not the average acu place.) But if you close your eyes and ignore any one else, as they would you, you'll be fine. PARKING: plenty. never a problem. OH yeah, the PAYMENT! It's what YOU CAN PAY. $20 - $40? What!? My right foot got sprained so my brother recommended this place after checking out Yelp. It is located adjacent to Waiola Shave Ice and has a decent size parking lot in front, just might have a lot of people going for shave ice at times. Walked in and was met by Tai. She was very helpful and asked detailed questions on my injury to help with the right therapy. She decided on an acupuncture treatment with electrolysis. I thought it was a neat concept since I had previously used an electric shock massager for treatments prior. On the second floor is where the magic happens. There are two massage tables and several chairs for clients. The view of the mountain along with the playing of soothing songs is really relaxing. After a 30 min treatment it was all done and I was ready to leave. Prior to going Tai gave some tips on what to do to help with the recovery process. There was no pressure to schedule another appointment but I already knew prior to leaving that I'd come back. After talking with my friends and family several of them are interested in coming down for treatments. I highly recommend coming down here to see what they can help you with. Aptly named in Hawai'i, this is the place to be for locals and the perfect go-to for acupuncture and pain therapy. I was referred to this place of healing by an art instructor at the Honolulu Museum of Art after complaining that I was unable to work and focus on my art because of all the shoulder pain I was experiencing! My teacher said he would talk to his wife who was also an acupuncturist, and she referred me to the Kama'aina acupuncturists and noted that Joe Bright here was also once an instructor at the Honolulu Museum in the art of calligraphy. I have been going here every week now for the last month or so and I have met every acupuncturist here except for Joe now, and each of them have been very courteous, kind and professional. They are all very knowledgeable and really take their time to 'feel' out your pain pressure points when it is available. Sometimes, if you just walk in, they are really busy and upstairs is already a full house of patients just relaxing and/or working through their pain. They offer a number of treatments, including cupping (which really helps, but will leave deep bruise marks on your skin for up to a week looking like a tattoo), electrical stimulation (TENS), pull-push massage (for lack of a better term to find your pressure points), and of course, acupuncture. Most importantly, though, the reason I keep coming back here to this location is because the acupuncture is a treatment that really works at a price that is affordable and non-negotiable (Only $20 - $45/visit)! I usually just give the minimum 'co-pay' of $20, since they don't accept insurance, unless it's my first time visiting that acupuncturist, in which case I'll give an additional $10 for the consultation. Then, if I'm feeling spoiled, I'll also treat myself to Wai'ola Shave Ice, which is just next door! *Note: Besides being aptly named for Hawai'i, the kama'aina in their name is actually missing an 'okina between the a's! read more

I have back problems under normal circumstances, but during my pregnancy they escalated to indescribable levels. As a last ditch effort to make them manageable I made an appointment with Tai. She was extremely helpful and informative and when I went in for the session she was very gentle and made me feel extremely at ease. The pain that I had been feeling everyday all day suddenly disappeared the day after my session and didn't return for over a week! I am extremely happy with them and will be returning for regular sessions to keep my sciatica and tension under control now that the baby has been born. :) read more
