Food: 1) Lau lau: I got introduced to lau lau when I was in Hawaii and I LOVE it! I've tried to find it at other Hawaiian restaurants but haven't found it anywhere else! This is the only place I've seen have lau lau on the menu! So of course, I order it every time I come! It's always a little too salty and honestly I don't remember if it was this salty in Hawaii, but I guess I don't mind because I don't get this dish anywhere else 2) Kaula Pork: classic Hawaiian dish! I also think it's a little on the salty side here but none the less, very tasty and oh SO tender! 3) Garlic fries: I actually thought it tasted better the first couple of times I had them here, but the last couple of times I had it, it wasn't as good as I remember. It still has all the tasty fixings on top (and it isn't too salty!) but it the last couple of times, the fries were just not fried as crispy as I remembered them. But overall, still good. Service: Always so friendly and attentive! Water is always filled! They take the order through iPads so it's all electronic and no paper waste. You even just pay off the iPad, so that's nice. Ambiance: Tall ceilings with these decorative fixtures at the top. It's very relaxed feeling in there, how you would typically think of Hawaii. Price: It's very typical of other Hawaiian places and like I said, I haven't found lau lau on any other menu! They do combo plates like lau lau/Kaula pork plate, which is great for people like me that can't decide but want everything! It's just a little more expensive but worth it since you get more options! My friends and I were visiting Portland from Hawai`i, and for some reason, they thought it would be a good idea to eat Hawaiian food in Oregon. Why you would want to eat Hawaiian food outside of Hawaii, is beyond me. They're in the middle of nowhere, the portions were small for the price, the Lau Lau was barely wrapped in a layer of taro leaves, and there was no butterfish. Blasphemy! They ran out of oxtail soup before the dinner crowd, and customer service was average. They were neither friendly nor unfriendly. Just flat. Where's the aloha spirit? The good news? The kalua pig was tasty, and I hear the chicken katsu was yummy (but it's really hard to mess up chicken katsu). read more

I've come here so much I'm surprised my check in count isn't at 100 yet. I first came to Kama'aina when they had just opened, so I've definitely seen their menu expand. They're always finding ways to spice up their options and are always open to customer feedback. I don't think they've done this again lately, but in early September, they offered this garlic pan-seared salmon as a special and holy crap it was amazing. Hope they put it on the menu or bring it back as a special. The pokes are my favorite, and I'm impressed by the wide variety that they offer. I think they have about six or seven options (or more, honestly) but my favorites are the Spicy Ahi & the Limu Ahi. If you're not sure which to try, these are definitely worth it. Some of their plates, such as the Kalbi & Korean Chicken (both come with Mac salad and rice) can be eaten in the "mini" size. It's just half of what they usually give you with the full plate and is more ideal for lunch or if you're looking for a plate to-go. They offer a ton more dishes such as Loco Moco, Katsu Curry; appetizers such as Furikake Fries and Spam Musubi; and just have a ton of options overall. As a Pacific student you get 15% off with your Boxer card so if you know a Boxer or you are one, be sure to bring your student ID! I believe they offer military discounts as well, but I'm not sure for how much. As far as drinks go, they also have a wide variety to choose from. My favorite is the Mai Tai. I have yet to try what else they have but they have a bar so I'm sure you'll find something you like! Service is AWESOME. The waiters and waitresses are always so nice. I don't think I've ever had a bad experience with their customer service. Hosts & hostesses seat you immediately, and call-in to-go orders are always super easy. If you're in the area and have a chance to check it out, be sure to do so! It's worth the try! read more

My husband & I were so looking forward to having lunch here today & we were so disappointed. Arrived at 12:45 & it was slow. I ordered the kalbi ribs & chicken combo. The ribs were so tough I couldn't chew them. The mac salad was bland. The waiter never came back & we had to flag him down. I told him about the ribs & he said he would tell the chef. We asked for the bill & were charged the full amount & nothing was said about the ribs ($13.75). I ate the chicken & a little of the mac salad. We go to Hawaii a lot & have eaten a lot of plate lunch over the years. We also drove 26 miles to Forest Grove. We've eaten plate lunch in different places in the Portland area & it's a lot better & less expensive. read more

Only had the MKBs , at first glance you're staring at the server like a hawk. Until it is in front of you, makes you want to break the camera out. The fun lasted a while, after the liquid nitrogen wears off they tasted like a stale fruit loops. I was pleasantly surprised to find Hawaiian food in Forest Grove. A family owned business with friendly and helpful staff are always nice. The main drive for me was the ox tail soup. It is so well built the collagen content makes ones lips stick. The allspice steals the show while every other spice builds well. Fall apart oxtail with veggies is a perfect Winter warmer. So many other islands treats for one to look forward to. Definitely coming back! read more

Have been coming here for years and have loved this place. However after my last visit I will not be coming back. I believe they are under new management and the customer service and product quality has gone down the drain. I ordered over the phone, was told it would be ready in 20min, showed up my order was never placed, then I got my order after 40 min and it was terrible, totally thrown together, under cooked and had to be returned. This is our second time here after moving to the area and the food is great! I do wish they had more fish or vegetarian options that didn't have pork or beef with it. The only complaint is that both times we have been here they have been extremely busy with ONLY ONE EMPLOYEE! The server was running around the entire time trying to help everyone the best he could but every person had to wait too long to order and get their food. I felt so bad for the server because he clearly was very overwhelmed with making all the drinks at the bar, taking orders, delivering food, filling drinks, and getting everyone their checks in a timely manner. He was super nice and didn't let the stress affect his attitude thankfully:) They really need to staff better in the evenings when it's busy! It's unfair to your employees and customers when you are knowingly severely understaffed. This place is amazing! Authentic, delicious from first bite to last in a warm and romantic island atmosphere. I couldn't be more pleased. My fiancé had the teriyaki chicken and green salad. I am not the biggest fan of Hawaiian food I've been to Hawaii and I did not enjoy the cuisine. However I came here on a whim for my niece because they have these cereal like stuff that when you put it in your mouth you kind of blow smoke. So I figured I'd be a good aunt and take my niece I was hungry so I bought chicken katsu. I thought it was because I was just hungry so I decided to come back again and try another plate of Hawaiian food and it blew me away again that was the end of it I love this place it's a little expensive but the food is amazing the atmosphere is very low key I love little lights outside the little patio in the summertime I'm sure it's great. This is one of my favorite Hawaiian places I don't even like to go anywhere else so if you're looking for a good place definitely come here. read more

I know it is a soft opening for now, so I will be back to try again. I would immediately jump it to a 4* if the prices came down $1.50-$2 a dish. I had the teriyaki chicken and short ribs plate with two scoops of rice and one scoop Mac salad. The food was great and flavorful. The Mac salad wasn't as good as Roxy's but still good. There are sesame seeds on the rice, just in case you don't like them. Next time I go I am going to try the curry and will adjust my review. For now it seemed to be a cool place for a date or extended lunch break but a little too expensive for lunch. Maybe release a smaller portion/cheaper lunch menu.
