The food here continues to be consistent. My go-to is Joy Poke in Beaverton but I don't want to drive an extra 7 miles when I can get something comparable here in Sherwood. The girls working here are always nice and polite. The only thing that I don't like is their kiosk system. There's only one kiosk which I found takes way longer to fumble through than going through the paper selection list. I feel like you can't customize your selections using the kiosk like how you can using the paper option. For instance, there's no way to split half sushi/half salad on the kiosk. It's either all or none. Technology is meant to make things less complicated for some folks in some instances but I'm old-school and I'll use the paper next time. Another word of advice is that you save the paper and reuse it again on your next order if you're the kind of person that orders the same combinations every time. I tried Poke Makana for the first time today on my lunch break and was pleased with how quick and seamless the experience was of getting my poke bowl to-go. When you walk in there is a raised table with paper menus and pens to fill them out. You can select your size, bowl type, protein, sauce, and toppings. Honestly wish I could do 3.5 Stars for this one. The food was okay. I like how you take an order slip, fill it out, and turn it in with your options. Easy enough even for my 8 year old to fill out. I do like the options that you can put with your proteins like corn, mango, seaweed salad, and edamame. The protein portions are small though. Like maybe 10 chunks of tuna or chicken. The sea scallops are more like thawed bay scallops (small penny sized ones) and tougher to chew than a sea scallop. It is a nice change of pace for the Sherwood area but not sure I'll specifically go back unless I need something quick. I mostly enjoyed their watermelon shake since it was fresh fruit and still think about it to this day and consider visiting again just for the drink. This evening was a belated birthday dinner for me. I had choice of what we would dine on. I had been wanting to go to Sumo Sushi in downtown Portland for a long time. Sadly they are only open until 7 PM, and the wife and I decided that it was not to be. The traffic wasn't worth it tonight...but one day, oh yes. So after a little additional research we decided on Ppke Makana. The whole create your own as opposed to not sold us. We walked in and the set up looked quite familiar. As we let the "Burrito Artist" that we were newbies, she advised us that they were like Chipotle only with poke. Now my wife and I both got pokerittos with spicy tuna, salmon, seaweed salad, jalepeños, masago (fish eggs), furiacki and tasty sauces. Basically the meal was epic. My daughter flew off to Hawaii and I decided since I could not go, I would get some poke for takeout. I chose spicy salmon and tuna and added yellowtail for the proteins. I have been craving poke for sometime and finally decided to come here because I'm able to customize my bowl. This is a pick as you go down the line type of restaurant like Chipotle but recently due to Covid they provide a menu at the front counter and you can pick from a list. You have an option between two poke bowl sizes or a pokerrito. There is a choice white or brown rice and an overwhelming amount of toppings to choose from. I love how you get to add as many toppings without the extra charge, unless you decide to get avocado. There are a lot of sauces to from as well. The only thing I didn't like was that the salmon/tuna is not entirely fresh as the toppings. I would be happy to pay a little more for fresher salmon/tuna. So I'm pretty late to the poke craze. I like my food hot. Not a fan of cold food at all, but it was my husband's date night pick, so there I was. I'm also not a fan of raw fish so I got chicken and shrimp. Lame, I know, but it was really good. I was pleasantly surprised. My husband got a few things plus eel. I do love eel, so I tried a bite of his. It was excellent! I will definitely get eel next time! They were also testing out an iced sweet tea drink. I got the regular poke bowl with sushi rice, spicy salmon, tuna, original poke sauce (spicy), wasabi mayo, cucumber, jalapeños, mango, seaweed salad, pickled radish, green onions, corn, pineapple, crab salad, edamame, masago, and furikake. I've had my fair share of poke and I was pleased. What I love about poke is that you can always switch it up and try different mix-ins or sauces. I love me some poke, and now I don't have to drive very far to get a very delicious bowl made just how I like it. This place is like Chipotle in that you dictate exactly what you want on your meal. You can start with a base of sushi rice, soba noodles, mixed greens, or put it in a burrito. I've picked the salad greens as my base both times I've gone. They have tuna, salmon, yellowtail, octopus, spicy tuna, spicy salmon, eel (cooked), chicken (cooked - though WHY you'd put chicken on a poke bowl is beyond me. If you don't like raw fish, go somewhere else). They mix your proteins with a sauce of your choice (I get spicy poke sauce), and then you move on to additional toppings. Apparently you can get as many as you want, so what the heck, load it up! The service is friendly and prompt, unless you get behind someone who has never had poke and needs everything explained, or one of the less experienced staffers who move very s l o w l y. I've been to many-a-poke spot here since moving from Hawaii a year ago... and my stance has not changed --- I HAVE NOT FOUND A GREAT POKE PLACE IN PDX. Talk to any local transplant from Hawaii and ask them - almost universally, you'll get the following: "no good poke joints up here." That's a little unfair probably because the bar is so high coming from where poke originated and where the ahi is literally fresh out of the water. So I try to temper that perspective with a dose of reality when reviewing places. But even granting them that handicap... the poke here is just average. The ahi did not taste fresh at all. It had the consistency of previously frozen ahi.. a bit mushy. People from Hawaii will know exactly what I'm referring to, as in the difference between the fresh vs prev frozen options at Foodland back home.. it's definitely noticeable. The shrimp also had a smell that made it seem not particularly fresh. The salmon was decent, so I do give them the nod on that. I'm not a fan of all the silly toppings, but if that's your think there is an abundance of them here. And if that really is your thing, then I will at least say that those appeared quite fresh. The crab salad was actually a welcome addition, so no complaints there. I'll probably be back, but mostly because there aren't much options. But in all honesty, the poke is just okay for me here. I got ponzu flavoring and it had a nice citrus profile but a little too vinegary. The add ins are nice because you can put as little or a lot and only a few things are additional add ons. I liked the variety of seating options too. The only downsides were the salad leaves were watery and not strained out enough. I made the mistake of adding a avocado sauce (which was delicious) but masked the ponzu flavor, so next time would just stick to one flavor profile read more
