The food was presented well and the food was great. Portions were hearty. The food and drinks were really good. Wow. A friend brought me here and I was so blown away. Pretty quiet on a Monday around 1--I think PU was still on holiday so the town was more empty than usual. Our host was really helpful and super friendly. I had asked about the spiciness of the World's Spiciest Ahi Poke and he was pretty honest that it's got a serious kick to it. Naturally being a spice fiend, I was intrigued. We ordered our food which came out in record time. Here's what we got: - garlic furikake fries: Yes yes yessss!! I've had garlic furikake fries at other Hawaiian places but none hold a candle to these. I love that the seasonings actually stick to the fries rather than just falling to the bottom of the dish - world's spiciest ahi poke salad: I have a pretty high tolerance for spicy foods and this was SPICY. Very good but do not underestimate this - mac salad on the side: you can't get Hawaiian food and not order mac salad. Absolutely love this place! This food truck comes to my work pretty frequently and I always have the date marked on my calendar, so I knew the brick and mortar version would be just as good if not better and it did not disappoint. I typically get the bowl at the truck with one part poke and 2 parts coconut shrimp but they sadly didn't offer this option in the restaurant but it forced me to order something new. I went with the Kalbi and was not at all disappointed. I like kalbi when it's crispy on the edges and usually restaurants don't cook it like this so the best place to get it IMO has always been at Korean bbq places, but this was just as good as that if not better. The Mac salad is delicious too, do not skip that side. We also started with garlic fries and had no regrets. Definitely will be back. read more

The family decided to stop by Kama'aina to try Hawaiian food since we miss home so much. Moved to Southern Oregon about a year and a half ago. With Covid, its not easy to return to Hawaii. Hawaiian Food Restaurant in Forest Grove, Oregon Man oh Man. Over rated to put it mildly. I'll try to be kind with this review. You walk in and are immediately faced with 'Don't Touch' signs. As if anyone would care. This restaurant has gone through a few different owners and cuisines over the years, This is a new low. The restaurant had only one other couple, all the rest of the tables were empty. The waitress, not a hostess or host immediately tried to steer us to a window table, thus trying to give a curbside impression that the establishment was busy. You are given a rolled up napkin with a fork. Pathetic. We ordered the coconut prawns and a vegetable stir fry. Depressing to think that dining has sunk to such low standards. The dishes were served, and you are presented with a very overly optimistic impression of food. The macaroni salad and rice were obviously placed on the dish with an ice cream scooper. The "salad" was a limp depressing impression of whatever. Didn't try it, won't loose a night's sleep for not. The meal. Coconut shrimp. Greasy with a taste of coconut that has sat too long out of the bag, obviously no where near fresh. This is one of the premier recipes that is raved about. This is served with a small plastic container of sauce. Grim. I got up and asked for a condiment tray. Small soy sauce and hot sauce packets were handed to me. I tried opening one of the packets and it spilled all over, and no I'm not an uncoordinated jerk. The ice cream balls of Rice had a left out too long dry crust. Macaroni salad. Pasta with Mayo. Shrimp tasted horrible and were overly greasy from the deep fry. Vegetable stir fry. Generic in every way. Nothing to go out for. Lots of tough chewy chicken strips in this "vegetable"stir fry. No one finished their meal. They the server (pardon me for not caring about correct pronouns) asked if we wanted a box to take the dead remains home, all present declined. When leaving, I walked back to meet the "cook" not a chef. I spoke with what I thought was an other server, I asked to meet the cook. She immediately chirped "I'm the cook". Amazed I asked her how old she was, she was nineteen years old. Woke impression: Don't think I'm sexist or age sensitive. I don't give a damn if someone can do their job. This place reeks of cost cutting on all corners, My recommendation is that you avoid this place like the culinary plague that it is. Over hyped. Over priced. Man I could easily go on. I did leave the waitress a $5.00 tip. It ain't her fault. It ain't the cooks fault. But it damn sure is the fault of ownership to lower all standards to make the rent. Amazing Hawaiian food and great drinks. One of my favorite restaurants in FG. I love their bbq chicken, the mac salad is so yummy too. The poke is fresh and delicious and the katsu chicken is great. I haven't tried the loco moco, but others in my past party's have and raved about it too. The servers are always so warm and friendly and the ambiance is cozy. It was my first time, coming from Portland got here on a Saturday, at 11AM. It wasn't busy, but it slowly got busier as time flew by. A beautiful, sit- in restaurant our waiter sat us down immediately. Let me tell you, my partner and I grew up in Hawaii and the menu instantly gave us "zippy's vibes" a great selection of foods that reflects popular local kine grinds back home. We got the following: -Furikake Garlic Fries - SO GOOD! just get it. It's the perfect garlic fry. -Korean Chicken- Regular size is very shareable and comes with 2 scoops of rice and max salad. It looks a lot like the zippy's korean chicken but the taste is a little different. Sauce wasn't too sweet, a little more on the ginger-y side . Breading was crunchy, yet tender ( better than zippy's in my option). Tip* If you're looking for something on the sweeter side try The Roxy's garlic fried chicken. -Oxtail Soup- $16.00, the oxtails were HUGE! Side of minced ginger, 2 scoops of rice and Mac salad. I was happy to have some leftovers. - Spicy Ahi Bowl - $9.50 for appetizer, $10 with rice. Classic spicy ahi with onions and it didn't disappoint- better than uwajimaya. - Side if Squid Luau- classic coconutty flavor with diced squid. It was very green to the traditional squid luau I've had back home so I'm wondering if they added a little more greens - not a problem for me! -Mac salad - the Mac salad is usually the ultimate way to find out if the restaurant is legit. But in this case, I would say that it's okay.. I think it was missing some salt and pepper? Like the texture was great but I couldn't really taste anything but the mayo. Easy fix tho. We were amazed to how delicious and nostalgic it was! I will say that it was a little on the salty side for me. I'm a person that likes sugar and salt at a 75% level, so if you're like me then maybe asking them to go light on the salt and to have a packet on the side so you can add on to your liking. Pretty good food but lacking in consistency. I've been here several times and I would say overall it is a really good experience. The Korean Chicken is amazing, sweet, perfectly crisped, its what sweet and sour chicken should be honestly (not the normal overfried stuff you get with a weird ketchup sauce at places now.) The kalbi ribs are also very tasty. The mac salad also isn't drowning in binder like a lot of other places do. Portion sizes are also pretty good for the price. The bad: Kahlua pork has been incosistent for me. Sometimes its really dry, other times very tasty. Also my experience with the Lau Lau (steamed pork? and fish?) was similar as well. And the steamed pork buns, i get the feeling they arent making them there, and are serving frozen ones. But look, thats just a few complaints, and i keep coming back for more. If you're a normal human i recommend starting with the kelbi beef and korean chicken combo. Its my personal favorite and I think you'll love it too! read more

Used to be our favorite spot but has slowly gone down hill. They changed their menu and it continues to get smaller and smaller, getting rid of their best items (in my opinion). When they are out of sides that come with platters they don't sub other items, you just pay the same price for less food. The mac salad used to be ON POINT, now its blah. If I hadn't been eating here for years and went here for the first time I'm sure I would enjoy it... but compared to 4 years ago, it's blah... it's just not worth the trip unfortunately. I am always on the hunt for great Hawaiian food, and since Taste of 808 closed their doors in Newberg I had to start over. Let me just say if you never got the chance to eat Taste of 808 you missed out. But this is a review about Kama'aina, and I have to start out saying it was amazing! It is in Forest Grove so for me it is a bit of a drive, but it is well worth it. The ambiance of this place is really inviting and the staff are as friendly as they come. We came here to celebrate the retirement of a co-worker and got sat in the Banquet room, and had kind of a buffet style lunch. This included: Kahlua Pork, short ribs, teriyaki chicken, green salad, and of course there had to be mac salad! I was able to try a bit of everything, and I have no complaints about any of it. It was all delicious, but the mac salad was definitely my favorite thing there! The pork was amazing as well. I definitely have to come back so I can have a look at the menu and try a few different things. I am looking forward to the spam musubi, lumpia and the loco moco! read more

This place is so lazy it can't even rinse the starch off their rice before they cook. I thought it was a fluke the first time.. but time after time it remains the same - Crunchy, bitter, rubbish. I know Covid probably hit Kama'aina hard like a lot other businesses but the quality of food now is lacking. The choices lacking, Pretty much a food cart now in brick and mortar. Seems like they gave up on this location to pursue the other ventures the owner has going on now and they are waiting out on lease to close out this location. I hope I am completely wrong and they bounce back. Bring back the original Kama'aina. Heck forest grove isn't huge either, so this could be the reason the business how it is. read more

This is the best Hawaiian I've experienced outside of Hawaii itself! The food is always so top quality, excellent! I have tried literally the whole menu, and can honestly say, though I have my favorites, I haven't tried anything i didn't like. Their Mac salad is especially good! If you enjoy poke, they have super fresh, well balanced, amazingly delicious options! Korean chicken is my ultimate fave, and if you like a super crispy fried chicken with a sweet/ salty sauce, this is your jam. The dining experience in restaurant is also a delight, beautiful art gracing the high ceilings, a gorgeous blown glass chandelier! The staff is friendly, helpful, and so inviting. It has been awhile since we ate here and I am glad we did. It was not too busy so we were seated as soon as we walked in. Water was brought to us and our drink order was taken as soon as we sat down. I already knew what I was ordering, the kalua pork plate. Hubby got the Aloha Pack that had 3 different options. The kalua pork was just as I remembered, delicious! The salad dressing was tasty as well. I had a bite of the chicken katsu and a coconut shrimp off hubby's plate, and with the dipping sauces that were provided... pretty dang good. I might get a side of the coconut shrimp next time, they were that good. The 3rd option in the Aloha Pack was kalua pork so it was nice to get multiple options to eat in one meal. The longboards were nice and cold and tasted great with our dinners. Tasia was very friendly and provided us with great service. Menu was smaller than I remember and there are no pictures of what the food looks like, but still has a great variety of food options to choose from. We will definitely go back for sure. read more

Very good food, I had the vegetarian plate with seaweed salad and garlic edamame. Lots of flavor and very filling. Soy curls (I wish someone would figure out a more appetizing name for these) had a really good sauce and texture. I got this from the food truck, not the restaurant.
