Brought in my vehicle to have a dashboard warning light fixed. After a diagnostic and reset of the error code didn't fix it, they recommended an entire component be replaced. Vehicle was subsequently shipped to mainland and reviewed by a different Nissan dealer, who indicated the component which was suggested to be replaced was not malfunctioning and was reinstalled in the vehicle correctly. read more

I purchase my car here, but I would NEVER use their service department. I brought my car in for a recall, and also to check a warning light. It cost $189, to run a diagnostic, that should be included as part of the repair cost (but they don't do that). They added on $18.50 "for supplies". When I asked what supplies, they said things like paper towels (to run a diagnostic)? well they put a little grease on a part (but that was part of the recall and should have been covered), Well "we add that to every bill". Sorry this is just stealing! Am I the only one who sees this. Also, I have never had to pay for a diagnostic if I have a dealership do the repair, they have to diagnose what they plan to fix. They will not be fixing this problem, they will not be fixing any problem for me in the future. I don't blame the people who are customer reps, I blame the dealership for ripping people off! If I could give a zero rating I would. We fly back and forth from Oahu to hilo for work so we're not always on island. I called to schedule an appointment to find a new Nissan truck. The sales person I spoke to was Shawn. All we asked was to find us a 4x4 no red color no blue color, 4 door available on the lot. I don't think it was asking too much for him to take a picture or send us the info of the trucks they do have and are ready to be sold. We waited a while and received one picture of one truck! I don't know about you but time is precious and being that we're not on island all the time convenience is key. You have what we want or you don't. We live in Mt.View so no one want to drive to town for nothing when we could have just said no thank you in the beginning. So we call the next day and ask to speak to a new sales person, I asked not to work with Sean any further because to us, if you really wanna sell a car you would go the extra mile which he did not. I was told that all the sales people were in a meeting and they would take my information down and forward it to there sales manager who will find us a new sales person. 6 hours later still no one calls, which is crazy because if your working on commission and someone is begging to buy a car wouldn't you call back asap. So I call back frustrated and ask to speak to the general manager, since not even the sales manager called back or sent someone our way! I was told he's at there other dealership kamaaina motors. I call there and guess what, he's not there, I ask to speak to a sales manager, guess what, no answer. I call back Nissan and what do you know, Joseph the supposed GM is there, but now he's in a meeting! The only thing I have against the sales department was there were a few things missing or a battery not working and I was told to go buy my own. That should be the dealerships responsibility. I gave the Hilo Kamaaina Dodge dealership a one star because I had my 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 4wd truck towed to this dealership because I was having brake problems. I had the truck towed as I did not want to drive it from Keaau where I got stuck.The tow truck driver was very careful to note any damages to my truck and delivered it to Kamaaina in Hilo. It took a week to get my truck back and I had to rent a car from Hertz to get back to Kona. A week later I got a call my truck was finished, upon picking it up the clerk told me that they had to replace a bolt on the caliper and said they had to use a regular grade 8 bolt as they did not have a replacement. I thought what dealership would use an after market bolt especially when it had to do with the brakes. It was late in the day and I told the clerk I had to drive back through Saddle Road and did not want to get stuck if they were sure of the repair. He told me the mechanic did not drive the truck and it was repaired. He also gave me a list of needed repairs and said they checked the truck out and it should have these repairs done. I looked at the list and it was over $6000 worth of repairs and i said how can that be, my truck only has 75000 miles, and he shrugged and said it needed it. It ran from steering to ball joints to wheel bearings and I ask which was the most important that I had to do as I could not afford $6000 in repairs on a truck only driven on the highway, and he said all of it. I took the truck home and parked in my garaged where it sat. i ordered wheel bearings, ball joints etc and had a friend help me. When we removed the old parts everything was still tight and my friend who is a mechanic said it did not need replacement, but we did anyway since we had the parts and we had it apart. The list was a big scam for them to make money on unnecessary repairs, but that is not my biggest complaint. My garage is dark and unless you turn on the lights cannot see anything. A week later when we were working on the truck I found that the rear bumper had a large dent on it with yellow paint smears on the right side. I had just bought a new bumper when I bought the truck used and because the tow driver checked my truck I know I had not dented this bumper. Then I realized the reason the clerk was trying to make like they did not drive my truck, had I walked around the truck the day I picked it up from the dealership I would have seen the dent, which was my mistake for trusting them. I knew calling them a week later would do not any good as they would have denied doing the damage. And it made sense why they did not wait to get the right bolt as they wanted to get the truck out of their shop. When i got back to Kona I did talk to Tony Daub about the repair and showed him the bolt they used, and only did this because i knew him not expecting any compensation. When i went to the parts department in Kona the following Monday to get the right bolt they told me Hilo had the bolt, so i had one sent to Kona. They were in such a rush to get the truck out of there and whoever drove my truck and damaged it know they did it and shame on you for not owning up to it. Be careful if you go in for repairs and check with another mechanic before committing to repairs there. Overall, they make an effort to do things right. Be very carful with the service department, though. Make sure you know about their "shop supplies." They use this very unclear add-on to charge you more. From now on, I would not leave my car for service until they told me the final cost, including "shop supplies." I recently had a tire repaired, and was charged for"shop supplies" for the plug, itself---the price quoted was for the labor, only. This was not made clear to me. They use the shop supplies charge to build a sale, and the money you think you may have saved is lost in their "shop supplies" So an unsuspecting customer can have a service performed at one price, and then at pick find a nice surprise in the form of a "shop supplies" which can be up to either !5% of the charge or $15--I am not 100% sure which is which. Buyer beware and ask questions. After a run-around, I was told the "shop supply" charge was to be refunded--but I am still waiting for the check. read more

As an outsider living on the Big Island for 10 years, and building my own house and fixing my own cars here, I can tell you to proceed with caution with this vendor and all vendors here. We, you, here on the Big Island are at the very end of a resource stream. Parts and skills are sometimes hard to find. Customer service ethic in a mainland thing. People here will do the right thing if they feel like it, but in no way will every feel accountable to do it. Especially with a visitor or recent transplant. Ask questions, trust your gut and be polite. Try to bring out the best in people's work and behavior, all you can ask is what they can do, and that can be limited. You are a non-local with a credit card. Your money drives everything here, be careful with it, everyone wants it. read more

I was interested in a midsized sedan and owned an Altima in the past. I had to go to Kama'aina Nissan three times before anyone approached me. During the first two trips, I spent about 20-25 minutes each time browsing their Altima inventory. There were sales people by the building who saw me but no one approached me. I thought it was actually nice that they don't approach me, because it allowed me to take my time and approach them when I was ready. I was approached the third time, so I guess that the salespeople the first two times just thought I didn't have money or something. In my opinion, Nissan had a low pressure atmosphere. That's not the same as saying that they're low pressure. They're one of the few dealerships in Hilo that still use the classic four-square sales approach which, when executed correctly, disguises a high-pressure sale under a cloak of empathy and understanding. A customer that's worked over with the four-square basically feels satisfied after being screwed. Remember, this is not the fault of the dealer. It's the customer's fault for being dumb. There are a few things to watch out for. First, know that most of any dealerships' profits come from used car sales and their service department, NOT from new cars. Kama'aina Nissan gets decent business from its service department, although not on par with Toyota, Honda, or Ford. The revenue generated pretty much covers their overhead and any cost of doing business. However, unlike most other dealerships, their used car inventory is small, and terrible. The only good vehicles they have are the Nissan Frontiers which are a hot item, but severely limited in number. All the other vehicles aren't selling and if you did as much research as I did, you'll find that they advertise a third of their used cars under retail value and about half slightly above. The result is that their profits from used car sales is negligible on average. In order to increase the bottom line, they push hard to sell their new vehicles above MSRP. Good dealerships aim to sell above MSRP as well, but are more willing to lower prices because they know they have repeat customers to their service department which provide the biggest profits. Kama'aina Nissan is not flexible. This is the first sign of trouble. Remember, dealerships make profit even if they sell at invoice. Maximizing profit isn't wrong, but holding the line on their markups indicates something about their finances. This brings up the next problem. It's common for dealers to place a dealer sticker with a markup next to the factory sticker. The reason they place it in that exact spot is to fool every customer into thinking that the stickers came together. Again, common practice. My problem is that for Nissan, they've added the paint, rust, and fabric protection to all cars which are totally unnecessary. Their excuse is that we live in Hawaii. They also say that they're the only ones that automatically provide that service. This sounds great, until you realize that manufacturer already apply excellent rustproofing and paint protection that can handle anything Hawaii can throw at the cars. Besides, the worst places for cars is in snowy states because the salt on the roads do much more damage that Hawaii weather conditions. Dealerships don't have to "automatically" put it on because it's OPTIONAL. The dealership gets tons of profit from rustproofing. Even if you paid someone $100 an hour to do the work, you won't even come close to paying what they charge. Doing this "automatically" forces customers to pay for something they don't need. Don't believe me if you want, but you should avoid any dealership that depends on new car sales for profit. Profits are taken care of. Profit from new cars are a bonus. Nissan negotiates very little and holds the line most of the time. Not a good sign. Watch out for the four-square. read more

My first-ever car, a 2001 Honda Civic LX, was on the outs and although I knew it was bad I was in denial about it because it was my first car and I wanted it to last forever. Well, forever ended today abruptly. Now I am the proud owner of a 2014 Nissan Versa Note. This car is a dream to drive, it turns so smoothly and looks great. This was THE BEST experience I've ever had at a car dealership! This is the first time we've owned a Nissan and our car had to go in for a recall. From the first call that we placed, it was a pleasant experience. When I arrived to the service center I was greeted by a group of welcoming employees! They were very polite and professional. They each had a task and got right to it. They explained the recall and what they were going to do. They even did an engine check with me present, explained and showed me what they check for and said everything looked good and I wouldn't need any service until probably the next "check up" or servicing. From there, they took me to the counter, explained the paperwork and what I was signing. They answered all my endless questions with patience, politeness and a smile! They asked if I needed a ride to work or home, but I had a ride. They offered coffee in their waiting area, which clean and comfortable. I recently relocated back to Hawaii from Las Vegas, where I purchased my Nissan Versa. Within 2 months of my car arriving in Hilo, I received a card in the mail from Kamaaina Nissan with an offer for a $24.99 oil change. Since my card was close to needing an oil change anyway, I decided to take advantage of it. Over 2 months had passed since I received the card by the time I was able to schedule an appointment and was told that they didn't have my offer on file, but if I brought the card in, they'd be able to honor it. I went in on the day of my appointment and waited only a couple of minutes (if that) before being greeted by Keone. He told me to come inside and that they would get me checked in. We chatted for a bit and then Dennis asked me to follow him outside and had me fill out an information sheet about my car. The check-in process was super quick and efficient. Unlike the Nissan dealership I went to in Las Vegas, they didn't try to convince me that my car needed service that I know I didn't need. He processed only the oil change and let me know that typically they would wash my car as well, but there was something wrong with their washer. Which is no problem because it was raining that day anyway. Haha. Dennis asked me if I was going to be waiting or if I needed the shuttle to take me somewhere. I had come prepared to wait, but I told them they could take their time. I was used to waiting at least a couple of hours for my oil change to be done. After being told they'd come get me when the car was ready, I settled into a chair, ready for a long wait. To my surprise, it took less than an hour for my oil change to be done along with the complimentary multi-point inspection! And during that time that I was sitting there, there was not one person who worked at the dealership that did not say "Hi" and smile as they passed. Everyone was friendly and looked like they were enjoying their jobs. A few other people came in to have their cars serviced while I was waiting and before I knew it, they had all been checked in and were informed of when the shuttle was going to be coming to get them. Once my car was done, I met Dennis at the cashier's counter and paid for the service. He let me know that everything looked good on my car and thanked me for coming in. As I was getting into my car, I was thanked again by two of the other workers that were in the area. I had a very good experience at the Kamaaina Nissan Service Center and will be bringing my car back for the forseeable future. read more

Sales guy was nice but didn't listen to anything I said about what I could afford. They ran my credit without even showing me vehicles which was kind of annoying and when they did show me one it was a new truck and the payments were 250-300 more than what I told him I could afford. Then they tried to say my vehicle was in rough shape when I could easily have gotten it traded for at least 4k more than what they offered me. On top of all of this the manager came to talk story after I said I wasn't gonna do it. and literally was trying so hard to sell me the truck after I repeatedly said no. I work in customer service and sales and yes you try your best product first then go down but you also need to listen to what your customer needs and what they can afford. If they tell you no and they can't afford it you shouldn't try to sell why that extra 200+ would save you down the road instead of buying a used vehicle a couple years older. I just think they don't know how to treat people and maybe if they show vehicles first before running credit and getting into numbers then it would have been different. These guys sell cars in the oldest and most awkward and uncomfortable way possible... You sit in a tiny room while the "salesman" asks you to make an offer. He then leaves you there while he goes and talks with the manager. Then he comes back with the same price that is on the car and invites another offer. My wife and I felt that our salesman "lito" was offended that we actually wanted to negotiate a price on a car. He even said so... "it's just a little offensive that you don't think we should make a profit". This coupled with insulting games and gimmicks like putting "discounts" in an envelope inside the car to apparently make us think we are saving thousands right from the beginning... Once they covered all the fencing with black paper and the sign said, "come look inside for great secret deals" or something like that. I don't like these sleazy tactics and being treated like I'm stupid... And the actual buying experience is so uncomfortable... I'm sorry to be this critical, but this is how they made us feel. I was super disappointed with the service I got. I took my Nissan in for repair and had a warranty we purchased from the Nissan dealer we bought the car from. The warranty company approved $2200 of payment for parts and labor and Kamaaina told me I owed over $3000. Come to find out after a ton of research, they are charging way over MSRP for Nissan published parts rates. I asked if they could work with me at all to honor the Nissan rates (I did not ask for lower labor or anything else), after all they had my car over a week before any of this was told to me.The manager informed me they mark up their parts 30% and do not let the customer dictate rates to them, but admitted had it been a different warranty company that they generally work with they could lower the rates. I was able to find the exact parts online for $900 cheaper and that was with shipping. I found another local repair shop that was happy to do the repairs and ordered the parts himself. When I went to pick up my car from Nissan they added on 2 extra charges for diagnosing fees that were not on the original quote they had given me and told me I owed them $500+ for just looking at the car!! The service tech was always very nice to me and I'm guessing much of it was out of his hands, but come on.. this is not good service.
