So after reading many of the positive reviews online, I decided to give this place a try. Definitely a better choice than Six-Ping. This place is hidden near the corner but it won't be secluded for long, especially with all the great selections and wonderful service. The interior is very welcoming and even though it's relatively small inside, the layout was very organized and clean. Unfortunately, everything looked so great, I didn't know where to start. The lady at the counter was so courteous and polite. I wanted to get something for my folks at the same time and she was so helpful in recommending which items contain less sugar. My experience was really good. The parking it can be a problem, there is not many spaces. From outside it does have that fresh bake smell inviting you to enter. The bakery is well stock and clean. You pick a tray with a liner and start picking your choices. I choose couple of the coconut ones, the garlic cheese bread was excellent as well the sugar donuts. The staff was friendly, nice and in uniform. They only thing is that you have to spend a minimum of $10.00 in order to pay with card; something that I was not expected as I did not saw any sign stating it. So I end up buying more than anticipated just to hit the minimum. I will return soon. read more

This place is amazing! They have various types of breads and ice cream inside of a fish shaped bread. You can pick a ice cream favor and either red bean or custard to be at the bottom of where the fish tail is. My wife and I are regulars at this place. We first started with long bread with cream. Then quickly gravitated to Pandan Cake with almond (half moon). Now it's the Coconut Hokkaido. Coconut Hokkaido goes quick, but all it takes is a call and one of the staff pulls one to reserve for us. I've tried other places, ping, 85, etc. While they do have good points, this place keeps us coming back. Things seems just right, not too creamy, not too sweet. Just right. I'm giving this place 2 stars solely on the taiyaki ice cream. The price for it was $4.75, which i found pretty expensive. (Btw there is a $10 minimum for cards here) Anyways, I got the vanilla custard and my friend got the matcha green tea custard. The custard fill pastry was very dry/dense and the custard smelled really nice but didn't taste that great at all. The vanilla ice cream tasted fine, however, the matcha green tea ice cream was a different story. I don't even know how to explain the taste but it was not green tea! For toppings, there was whip cream, a pocky stick, three stale marshmallows, and a chocolate drizzle on top. Other than that, it was very cute for the picture and I'm sure the other pastries here are good. I just wouldn't recommend the taiyaki ice cream. read more

THE STORE OWNER OR MANAGER HARASSES CUSTOMERS! I showed up on a Sunday morning for breakfast. It must have been 9 or 10. They still didn't roll out most of their items which is common for this bakery. They had a long line. I think everyone was picking up orders. I left but later returned. They still didn't roll out their items. I looked at what they had. I didn't touch but got close enough to see if I liked what I smelled and saw. The girl at the front took her merry time to bring new items out. It was at a snail pace. I waited and waited but made sure to check out each of their items. I wasn't causing any problems. The suddenly this old Chinese dude came out. He starts screaming at his employees and pushing bakery carts to the far end. He made a lot of noise. His employees got very tense. Before they were relaxed and cordial. I continued to wait for the new items and look at the baked goods to pass time. Apparently this pissed this owner/manager off because he came up to me and started to harass me. He told me not to touch or to get too close to his baked items. I told him I wasn't doing that. He didn't make sense because his English was poor. I asked if more items were coming along and that was the reason why I was standing there. He kind of brushed me off but he did say I was ok and could stay or something to that effect but he went back to his phone to call security or something. He was definitely not OK. He then stood there watching me like some stalker. He was creeping me out but I kept my cool. I decided to buy a product that I was eyeing. I paid for my item. I then tried to make small talk with him in order to defuse the tension. It was close to 11 AM. He again got on my case about touching and smelling items. I pretty much told him off in a rational way, explaining that us talking like this was spreading germs in the air and that we should be wearing a face mask, that his employees never used gloves to handle the products, and that he should have rolled out all of his products in the early morning (they open at 8:30) not right before lunch if he didn't want me to stand there and wait. He didn't say anything. I tried to end on a good note but he wasn't having it. I bid him goodbye and he was like whatever who cares dude. I went outside and sat on the bench to eat my cake. Some security officer arrived on the premises. He went inside and talked to the owner/manager. I could care less because I was enjoying my cake even though it was a day old and wasn't fresh. I had a feeling that this owner/manager constantly harasses security by crying out wolf whenever he wants to fight with a customer for no apparent reason except for the fact that he is mentally ill and he is just that. Security guard apparently didn't give a shit about him because he took his merry time going to his business. If you look at his yelp reviews, one reviewer complained that he harasses customers. That is true. He harassed me today. In a way, he harassed the security guard. He definitely harassed his employees for whom I feel so sorry. You could tell that he makes them nervous. If you want my honest opinion, it's best to get your bakery goods elsewhere in Chinatown because of his harassing behavior, the slowness of his employees, the increasing prices, and the boring products that he sells which taste all the same. Who in the hell fights with a customer on a Sunday morning on a relatively clear sunny day close to summertime? AVOID THIS MENTALLY ILL AND HARASSING LOSER. this is where diets go to die. i bought this mango bread from here that was the size of my face and it was cool to the bite, but oh so warm to the heart. it was creamy with a sweet cream cheese filling infused with mango flavor. the bread was buttery and chewy. i also tried the taiyaki, which is this fish shaped maybe waffle-like bread that was hallowed out in the middle and filled with red bean ice cream and stuck with little spears of marshmallows and whatnot. super darling. there were so many more options to choose from as this little bakery has walls of baked asian goods. would recommend! read more

Dropped in to check out why Kamalan Bakery had such balls to be in the same plaza as both King Bakery, Six Ping and right next door to Jungle Cafe. The disproportionately huge sign on their storefront must be compensating for something, don't ya think? It was just a quick visit for me, I had just had an early dinner and my body demanded that I have cake and that I have it now, so I gave this new bakery a shot. They don't have a very large selection but what they do offer looks top notch, the typical buns with red beans, black sesame, taro, cheese, bacon, hot dog nubbins, etc. I believe I saw some onigiri too, which was cool. They got your egg tarts, fruit cakes, and multiple varieties of swiss roll cakes. I had to hold back, even though the bo luo buns were calling my name...and telling me how bootylicious these buns would make my buns. I wanted to believe it, but Queen Bey insisted I wasn't ready for this jelly. Maybe next time. In the back by the cash register is the cake display case, where I chose a slice of mango cake and strawberry shortcake. They had other flavors like black forest, chocolate, coffee, taro, etc. Both cakes had fluffy sponge cake layers with whipped cream topping and a thin layer of fruit jam filling in the middle. Totally hit the spot. Typical price of $2.75 a slice, but I'd buy again without hesitation. Definitely beats Six Ping, as I wasn't much of a fan of them to begin with. Super soft and fluffy breads! I enjoy the selection here at Kamalan bakery. I came here on a Sunday evening yet there were still a few items available. The hours of the bakery are appreciated.. it doesn't close too early and it makes for a convenient walk-in. Clean and organized as well, in the heart of China town. Kamalan place boasts a variety of baked goods ranging from sweet to savory. There are several types, textures and flavors of breads. My most favorite is the vanilla cupcake. Its not an actual cupcake, rather its a soft vanilla flavored sponge cake in the shape of a large muffin. The crushed almonds on top of the vanilla cupcake make for a nice taste as well. Its super fluffy, airy, and I cant stop eating it! I would pair this with the milk tea at the teabar cafe next door. They have a pandan cupcake as well but the taste of the pandan flavor is too strong and makes for a bitter tasting bread. My second favorite is the raisin milk bread. The raisins are tucked all the way at the bottom of the bread, mixed with some sort of custard. The raisin bread does not have a sponge texture but its still light and airy. The taste of the products ensures that proper ingredients are used. All of the items against the shelves are nicely presented as well. Overall a good place to drop by when you're looking or a baked treat. I'll probably visit again soon on an afternoon day when the bakery carries more selection of items. read more

My husband and I heard that they have ice cream Taiyaki,so we braved the Chinatown traffic to try it. Guys, it is NOTHING like the taiyaki you might have seen in photos online, sadly. If you don't know what it is, it is supposed to be a fish-shaped waffle (fragrant and crispy) filled with red bead or custard. Then they slice open the top a little bit and top it with soft serve ice cream! Their waffle was completely soft and they just use and ice cream scoop to put some hard, freezer-burned ice cream inside. They put a swirl of redi-whip on top and a pocky stick. Sad waste of time and money. LOL! On a side note, the baked goods there were fragrant and delicious. We had the egg custard tart and a coconut/almond milk bread. The same type of stuff you'll find in a korean grocery store bakery or at six ping. read more

The customer service here is terrible. Twice, i have stopped by and both times i was let down. The first time i stopped by for a fish taiyaki but it turns out they stop selling them after 8pm and they also dont sell them at all on tuesdays.. Would have been nice if they mentioned that on their website. I then stopped by for a second time and made sure i was early this time (2pm and not a tuesday) but they only had a couple of taiyaki's left for the people in front of the line and they ran out and said it would take about 30 minutes. I would assume that for a good service and such a high demand they would start a new batch when they begin to run out. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE!! Six Ping and Tour Les Jours move out of the way!. The sweet bread here is cheap and inexpensive compared to all the other asian sweet bread bakeries in town. The way they bake, somehow each sweet bread, no matter what flavor you choose, has a moist and buttery consistency throughout each part of the dough. You don't get this elsewhere. I mean Six Ping has good prices but their bread is frankly dry. Tour Les Jours makes good sweet bread but frankly they really overcharge and inflate their prices. One of the best smelling bakery's I've ever been in and the bread is amazing. I'm not much of a sweat bread kinda guy but I'll take some bites from this shop. The only con is that if you're like me and only carry card it's a $10 minimum, but if you got cash, the praises are great for a sweat snack. their mango cream cheese is to die for. I enjoyed the other savory pastries as well but my all time favorite was the mango one. The bakery is relatively new but it's a gem. I like how they offer free samples as well and it gives you an idea of how certain pastry taste like. I also tried the hot dog green onion bun and the bread was light and fluffy which was perfect. You have to spend about +$10 to be able to use CC, so bring cash if you are spending less than -$10 . Fresh and delicious bread, rolls, cakes, all kind of bakery! Every time I stop by the trays are pretty much just out of the oven, which is an indicator of their product fast sell through. Lots of people stopping by. And PRICES! It is so inexpensive! For $10 you can get about 5-6 pieces depending on what you are getting. I love their milk or coconut bun, their Japanese coffee cakes, and so much more that I should not eat... Be aware though, if you purchase less than $10, you cannot use a bank card, but only cash. Which is fine, it makes sense. One star down for: * parking is very limited as it is shared with Jungle Cafe next to it; you literally have 4-5 spots for the bakery side and most of the time it is not available. * the bread clips (that you use to pick your choices off the trays) are hanging right next to the entrance door where it is easily can be contaminated by people's clothes accidentally touching it; I avoid using them and always use parchment paper sheets they have available. One time a cashier told me I should use the clips, and she didn't look too happy when I told her about my concern where they were located. She didn't care to change it up either...
