Offering both indoor and outdoor seating, this little place packs a big punch of healthy and delicious seafood; both dishes to eat there or to go, as well as fresh fish by the pound to take home and prepare on your own! I had the Korean salmon tacos and they were the standout for me. Super flavorful, great sauce and seasoning, and the homemade tortillas are always a big plus. The atmosphere is very casual with decent outdoor seating, which works well for this kind of spot. I really wanted to like this place, google led me here. As an avid Yelper, I thought I would let Google advice me for a quick bite. It was anything but. I went with the mussels and fries. Fries were fantastic, mussels were not good. 3 out of 20 shells were not opened and it tasted like it was co-boiled with shrimp. It tasted off, there were no garlic or white wine taste. $25 for this dish with fries, not worth it. We also had the fish bowls. It was okay but really could've been better if the rice was warm but it wasn't. Plus we had a flies that constantly flew around us during dining. The fries were tasty, but that and the pasta dish my kid ordered is all I could recommend. His pasta dish was tasty, tasted freshly made. The water dispenser was out, luckily they refilled 10 minutes later. Bathroom use you have to ask the key. Parking in small lot was difficult but we parked 2 blocks away. We went in on a Monday afternoon. We are locals and we have seen that place several times and have promised to go and try it. Today just seemed like the perfect day. We ordered the mussels with fries but unfortunately they were out of muscles so they substituted out with clams. The shellfish was delicious and cooked to perfection! The fries are the Pacific islander type and they were really crispy and good. We had it with a kale salad that was terrific. The service was very friendly and attentive. I'm originally from the Pacific Northwest and consider myself a complete seafood snob especially when it comes to salmon and Alaskan halibut. Hands down the best seafood in town. Absolutely delicious! This is a casual joint. You order at the counter, you get your own waters, and they bring their food to you. The menu is great with good variety and quality. I was impressed by the quality of the seafood -- preparation, taste, and freshness. We got the fish and chips, half and half poke, and the clam chowder. Clam chowder was great, no notes. Good amount of clam, flavorful, not too salty. Good amount of potatoes. The fish and chips were perfect. Smaller filets, perfectly fried, and extremely flavorful even without the squeeze of lemon and tartar sauce. Their tartar sauce is flavorful with dill and is chunky. Great accompaniment. Fries are hot, crispy, and seasoned with old bay. Poke was fantastic. Both the ahi and salmon were good but the salmon in particular was melt in your mouth tender. The portion is huge. I recommend asking for wasabi to go along with it. I'll come here again for sure. I'd love to try their mussels and the pesto shrimp pasta looked intriguing. read more

Was craving some seafood so we came here for lunch. It's located on the outskirts of downtown SB, so we were able to walk here from our hotel. It's a nice restaurant with ample seating indoors and outdoors. You order first then seat yourself. I got the yuzu salmon poke bowl and my friend got the fish and chips, which he's gotten before and likes every time. Yuzu Salmon (5/5): This was so good! I loved the yuzu in combination with the salmon as it gave it this citrusy, fresh flavor to the bowl. I also liked all the condiments in the bowl, such as the avocado which added creaminess. Popped in here today to get a poke bowl. I went for the half and half (half ahi tuna, half yuzu salmon). I took the bowl. It was really delicious. I should have asked for ginger, soy sauce and wasabi because I love adding all of the above to my poke bowls. I also went for the seashore fries which was a mistake. Stopped by Kanaloa Seafood for lunch the other day. I ordered the Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl and I'd definitely recommend it! The tuna tasted fresh and was very well put together with the seaweed salad and sauces. The rice was ok and could have less clumpy. The only downside of the bowl was the price for how much you get. I was still hungry after I finished the bowl and felt the value of the bowl was less than the price. I'd be up for trying out the other items on the menu but probably would not get the poke bowl for the cost. Other than that service was awesome and quick. The location is right off State St. and the is conveniently located next to the Paseo Nuevo parking garage. read more

We keep driving past Kanaloa and I keep announcing that I want to eat there one day. Well, the day finally arrived! We found ourselves over on Chapala in the afternoon and pulled in for a late lunch. There was a man and a chocolate lab on the patio and a couple getting up to leave when we arrived. On entry, it looks like a fish market, which it is, and I immediately had the idea to order some fish and have them cook it for us. We placed the order at the counter with a wonderfully helpful woman in a green wig (it was St. Patty's Day!). We ordered a beautiful chunk of grouper (the fishmonger recommended it) and they offered to grill half of it with blackened seasoning and the other half grilled with lemon and herbs. Hubby and I ordered 1.5 pounds of fresh grouper, plus fries and the house salad to split. The beer/cider choices were great. I had the Fremont Sky Kraken, which I would order again. Perfect with grilled fish. The salad was unique and delicious, with beets, goat cheese, macadamias and a delicious light vinaigrette. The fries were worth fighting over, if there hadn't been such a generous portion served! I believe the spice on the fries was Old Bay. We devoured them, like hungry fishermen! Both fish servings were delicious. Hubby preferred the blackened grouper. I loved the grouper grilled with lemon and herbs. We took leftovers home and had them the next day for lunch. Still tasty! We will definitely be back soon! It wasn't cheap to go the route we went, ordering fish from the market and then having them cook it, but it was worth every penny! Food and service were outstanding. Kanaloa Seafood is located a short walk away from the mall and got the job done when I needed a quick lunch. The parking lot here is small and shared with two other tenants, but I was able to find some street parking along Ortega! Upon walking in, there are two registers - one for the fish market and the other for the restaurant. We grabbed some menus and asked the woman behind the register for some suggestions since it was our first time. She sounded pretty annoyed that we asked and we felt really pressured to order right away. We settled for a bowl of clam chowder, crispy fish tacos, and the half & half poke bowl to share. The clam chowder was nice and creamy, really hit the spot. Each spoonful came with a good amount of clams too! The pineapple salsa on the fish tacos was absolutely delicious. The fish was lightly breaded, but a little bland imo. Missing a little something in the batter perhaps? The poke bowl was good, but I'd stick with the salmon because that fish truly just melted. They really slather on the sauces, so the bowl got way too heavy half way through. If you're not into super creamy sauces, maybe ask them to go a little lighter on the aioli. Wish I knew.. :( Overall, food was okay, but not sure if I'd want to return for the tacos or the poke bowl. It was THE most disgusting thing, I gave it to my dog. First it smelled, then tasted like a burnt, dirty, old grill, the layering of avocado & greens below the patty squished out, & the smell was so offensive I could not take another bite.
