Chicken Tikka Masala, Vegetable Tikka Masala, Butter naan, Mango Lassi - good heavens!!!

Great food and hospitality. Also very flexible on "I would like it this way" options. Loved it! Highly recommended!

Food: Went to visit friends in Brooklyn and we stopped in and had lunch at Kanan Indian Restaurant. We came with a large party so we ordered a lot of food to share. This was some of my favorite Indian food I've ever had. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Biryani, Vegetable Biryani, and the Naan platter. The naan was seasoned with garlic and it was so filling. The sauces provided as well were all delicious and had a variety of favor. The chicken tikka masala was rich and so smooth. I was highly satisfied with my meal at Kanan! Service: The service at Kanan was exceptional. The women that served us were so kind and gave great recommendations. There were six of us, however, the food came out in a timely manner. our table was checked on frequently. Overall we had a great experience! Other: I believe that this restaurant is more often take out only. We were not aware of this when we walked in. However the staff quickly sat us and did not seem to mind us eating in the restaurant.

Kanan Indian Restaurant never fails to deliver the freshest, savory and flavorful dishes. I had ordered catered vegetarian food from them prior for our party a year ago and had done the same this time for our recent gathering. Everyone was delighted and satisfied. Ms Suchi (owner) is such a generous, kind and lovely person. She always helps me order dishes that everyone would truly enjoy. Our party platters were wonderfully prepared and packed well. Thank you again for the delicious food and on time delivery. Highly recommended.

Passed by this indian restaurant and decided to try it on a whim after an appointment. I was going to have chipotle but felt lazy and I'm glad I dropped in. The staff seem to be spread apart and wearing masks which is a must now a days. People are friendly here and make you feel welcome and will help you choose if you're unsure about something on the menu. So, just ask! I ordered their value special ($15.99+tax). This comes with an appetizer, a entreé of your choice, plain naan, and 2 chutneys, and rice. I had the chicken samosa and chicken vindaloo. You can adjust the spice level so let them know if you like it mild or burn yo ass off hot. Everything was fairly good. No complaints. Vindaloo had the spice i wanted (chose medium). I'll definitely drop by again if I'm in the area. FYI- credit cards are accepted

Got take-out from Kanan Indian Restaurant on Friday afternoon. There were some service issues, but once I sat down with my food I was very happy. Quality: I was immediately drawn to the Kanan Take Out Special, which comes with an appetizer, entree, rice, and naan. I ordered the Vegetable Samosas, and after taking a few bites of the Chicken Samosas, Vegetable was the way to go. My entree was the Chicken Tikka Masala, which was very solid. Loved both the flavor and heat on the dish. While I wish they allowed an up-charge for flavored Naan, the regular version was still tasty. Quantity: The Kanan Take Out Special was more than a meal. Value: $18 for the Kanan Take Out Special. Ambiance: Kanan Indian Restaurant has a very odd location in Gowanus. Nestled in an area filled with warehouses and garages, you will find this Indian spot. They have it set up as a sit down restaurant with about six tables and decor on the wall, but I would stick with take-out. It was hot inside and they had a strange soundtrack playing. Crowd: A few people waiting for takeout orders. Service: The owners had car issues, which caused delays and issues with my order. They were very kind to apologize and I would assume it was unusual. Parking: Plenty of spots on the side roads.

An Indian spot that delivers to my office! Joy! Gave them their first try today, had the delivery special:1 app,1 entree, rice, bread and sauce for 14.95. Not a bad deal. Got the Chicken Samosas for my app. I am a big Samosas fan and this didnt let me down, sometimes Chicken Samosas can be dry but these were juicy and flavorful inside with that nice, crunch exterior. For main I got the old stand by Chicken Tikka Masala, it was a good version with large chunks of chicken in an aromatic sauce. A few coworkers went out in a Harold and Kumar quest for White Castle and upon returning were hovering around me like flies on a sweet roll. The rice was decent long grain, the naan bread was charred and chewy (both good things in naan bread). Very welcome addition to our Delivery.com lineup.

We chose bar seating, which ended up being a bit of a tight squeeze facing the wall; not the most comfortable setup, but manageable for a short meal. To start, we had the pani puri, followed by the samosa chaat. The flavors were good, but the samosa chaat was a bit of a letdown. It wasn't served hot, and the samosa itself was soggy rather than crisp. That contrast in texture is really what makes the dish shine, so it felt like it may have sat a bit too long or was over-sauced. We also tried the vegetable pav, which was decent, and the cod, which was actually very good; nicely cooked with a flavorful sauce. I did find myself wishing we had an extra roti to soak up the rest. For drinks, I had the mango lassi, which I appreciated for not being overly sweet. Service was okay but could be more attentive. My water wasn't refilled after a couple of rounds, and we felt a bit rushed toward the end of the meal. We were given the check without being asked about dessert, which caught us off guard. We did ask afterward, but by then decided to go elsewhere. That said, the food overall is flavorful, and I can see why this place has appeal; especially if you're looking for something a little different in the neighborhood. Having met the owner before in Industry City, it's great to see her doing well in Carroll Gardens, and I wish the restaurant continued success.

The decor and vibe of this place is so vibrant and beautiful, it instantly puts you in a good mood. I came here for a solo dinner during restaurant week which was a pretty good deal. Most of the patrons seem like they were neighborhood locals which I love to see. I would say based on the flavors and the people dining here that this restaurant is more of a gentrified desi place than authentic. I found the flavors in most of the items I tried lacking. The fuchka prepared tableside is a nice touch, but again the marketing is geared more towards non-desi patrons. The fish fry was delicious and a good portion but more like a good British fish n chips cod filet than a desi fish fry with proper spices. Even the mustard served on the side was awfully bland with no spice whatsoever. While I can still appreciate the flavors, I will always be disappointed when an establishment trades authenticity to serve and coddle palettes that do not appreciate proper desi food. The lamb curry was very very good, and I specifically asked for it to be made spicy. Dining here felt like invading a curated space for non Indians, so I unapologetically ate the curry and rice with my hands to remind myself that yes, this is still our food even if it's muted. To the owners I say - do better and do not shy away from authentic flavors. This is afterall, New York freaking City. We are allowed to show up and showcase our cuisine with full masala, full spice and full heat - just the way God intended it to be.

Since then, we've dined in, and taken out, and the food has been unfailingly delicious. If you can swing it, dining in is always the move. Unlike the aforementioned sushi joint, Dastaan has decorated to make the small space much more colorful, and infinitely more welcoming. It seems to be a family business, judging by the somewhat surly (teenage?) waitress, but she was still there for anything we needed. Plus, you'll get some complimentary papadum with homemade tamarind and green sauce. But either way, the food will be good. The naan is fresh and fluffy, the poori is delightful (this airy goodness is dine-in only, I'd imagine), the lasuni gobi starter is one of my favorite things, and the curries are all deeply rich and flavorful. We've had korma, bhuna, and saag, with seafood or chicken or paneer or lamb. We've of course had chicken tikka masala and butter chicken (I'd prefer dark meat in the latter for taste and juiciness, but I imagine I'm in the minority). All of it has been super, super tasty. One of my kids is coming around to the fact that Indian food can be amazing, the other will only eat rice and mango lassi. But Dastaan gives me hope that some day they'll crave it like I do. We're going to keep coming in, and taking out.

We tried the Ghati Chicken, Szechuan Noodles, Basmati Rice, and Chapati (flatbread). The Ghati Chicken is very flavorful and quite spicy; the dark meat chicken is served in a stone bowl with a mixture of spices and spicy oil. It goes well with the basmati rice. The waitress recommended the Szechuan Noodles which was also very tasty and had a mixture of vegetables. The Chapati was good but nothing special - just a flat thin bread (similar to roti but less buttery). I would highly recommend the Ghati Chicken and Szechuan Noodles and can't wait to go back to try their other dishes. They offer a variety of appetizers, entrees (goat and vegetable biryani, paneer, butter chicken, fish), and sides. Service: The restaurant seemed a bit understaffed with only one waitress taking orders and seating customers and another waiter filling water and clearing empty dishes. It took a long time for us to get our order in, but the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Service was a bit slow because they were understaffed, but despite this, the two servers were excellent and did their best to get to everyone. Ambiance: The restaurant isn't big, but they are able to accommodate both large and small groups. Seating is tight but not too bad. We ordered the sweet and sour eggplant as an appetizer and struggled over decision paralysis before settling on chicken tikka masala and a mango lassi for her and lamb vindaloo for me, plus a bread basket. Our waitress, seemingly oblivious to the notion of profit, warned us we were ordering too much bread before saying, "You could always bring some home," and explaining that the bread basket would consist of our choice of four different naan. More decision paralysis! We picked plain, garlic, onion, and peshwari naan. The eggplant was good, breaded and fried and served with cilantro and tamarind chutneys. Our entrees came out soon after we finished. My girlfriend enjoyed her chicken, and my lamb was tender and spicy without being overwhelmingly so. Each entree was accompanied by a portion of basmati jeera, and the rice was perfectly cooked. The naan were all good, and my girlfriend and I both agreed the peshwari naan was the winner of the pack. The sweet, nutty bread complimented and contrasted the spicy curry of my lamb vindaloo, and my "best bite" was mopping up some of the sauce with it. Sure enough, we had leftovers both of our entrees and 3/4 pieces of naan (two guesses as to which got eaten on the spot), and lunch the next day was delicious. Stumbling distance from the 7 Ave F/G.
