Go here for well-seasoned meals and genuinely kind service. Friends and I have eaten vegan meals here about 2 years, and the food has been consistently good. The young woman who serves us is a real sweetheart--authentically caring and humble. The fresh meals outshine the small unpretentious space that isn't out of character for 3 Ave. Customers and deliverers stream in and out picking up orders--a strong sign of the meal quality. The heat was substantial, and the dining area stayed warm last weekend (January) when it was freezing outside, despite the frequent door opening. Haven't been to Kanan for a while because our last meal was not very good. Well they outdid themselves tonight. The butter chicken came in a redish-orange gravy that had no taste of Indian spices and was very watery. The saag paneer was very watery and again had essentially no Indian flavor. Food: Went to visit friends in Brooklyn and we stopped in and had lunch at Kanan Indian Restaurant. We came with a large party so we ordered a lot of food to share. This was some of my favorite Indian food I've ever had. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Biryani, Vegetable Biryani, and the Naan platter. The naan was seasoned with garlic and it was so filling. The sauces provided as well were all delicious and had a variety of favor. The chicken tikka masala was rich and so smooth. I was highly satisfied with my meal at Kanan! Service: The service at Kanan was exceptional. The women that served us were so kind and gave great recommendations. There were six of us, however, the food came out in a timely manner. our table was checked on frequently. Overall we had a great experience! Other: I believe that this restaurant is more often take out only. We were not aware of this when we walked in. Passed by this indian restaurant and decided to try it on a whim after an appointment. I was going to have chipotle but felt lazy and I'm glad I dropped in. The staff seem to be spread apart and wearing masks which is a must now a days. People are friendly here and make you feel welcome and will help you choose if you're unsure about something on the menu. So, just ask! I ordered their value special ($15.99+tax). This comes with an appetizer, a entreé of your choice, plain naan, and 2 chutneys, and rice. I had the chicken samosa and chicken vindaloo. You can adjust the spice level so let them know if you like it mild or burn yo ass off hot. Everything was fairly good. No complaints. Vindaloo had the spice i wanted (chose medium). Quality: I was immediately drawn to the Kanan Take Out Special, which comes with an appetizer, entree, rice, and naan. I ordered the Vegetable Samosas, and after taking a few bites of the Chicken Samosas, Vegetable was the way to go. My entree was the Chicken Tikka Masala, which was very solid. Loved both the flavor and heat on the dish. While I wish they allowed an up-charge for flavored Naan, the regular version was still tasty. Quantity: The Kanan Take Out Special was more than a meal. Value: $18 for the Kanan Take Out Special. Ambiance: Kanan Indian Restaurant has a very odd location in Gowanus. Nestled in an area filled with warehouses and garages, you will find this Indian spot. They have it set up as a sit down restaurant with about six tables and decor on the wall, but I would stick with take-out. It was hot inside and they had a strange soundtrack playing. Crowd: A few people waiting for takeout orders. Service: The owners had car issues, which caused delays and issues with my order. They were very kind to apologize and I would assume it was unusual. Honestly, quite disappointed in their delivery. Used seamless, delivery was late. Ordered raita, chicken vindaloo, mango lassi. Vindaloo was very mild in heat, I had requested the spiciest that they could make it, and it didn't deliver. Mango lassi tasted really sour. Not the typical creamy, yogurty lassi that I'm familiar with. Raita was insanely sweet, it tasted like they used a vanilla yogurt. Will not order again. read more

I usually order the take out special, which has an appetizer, entree, and naan. The chicken tikka masala is the perfect combo of tomato, cream and spices. The aloo papri is great, love the flavors! As i was waiting for a oil change, I thought I would try this place out. It had good reviews on Yelp so I thought why not. Big mistake. The inside of the restaurant had an odd chemical smell and the food was even worse. I had Paneer Tikka Masala and it was clearly unfrozen paneer (not homemade) in a thin red gravy that just tasted like watery garam masala. The naan was rubbery and stale. If people out there think this is what passes for good Indian food, you need to hit up Jackson Heights or Lexington avenue and get some actually decent food. I pre-order off Grubhub at 11:30ish for a 12:30 delivery time. I checked online and it said the restaurant opens at 12:15. The restaurant accepted our order at 12:10 and it was delivered within the time frame even though we were 1 mile away. Exceptional delivery time considering they cooked 6 orders and delivered within half an hour. The food portions were excellent, the food itself was decent. They did mess up on the spice level for one of the orders but it wasn't that big of a deal. Only complaint was that our mango lassi was spilled because of the cups they were in. It was a bit of a sticky mess but overall, about 90% of the drink survived. read more

Ordered on Seamless. Delivery was timely. That's all I got on positive. The food was awful. The blandest, driest, worst Indian food I may have had ever. Mulligatawny - based any lentil. Tasted like basic vegetable soup salmon appetizer - dry and unseasoned Naan coconut and spinach and cheese - like how do you screw that up? They did. Thick, doughy, flavorless. No discernible coconut or spinach/cheese. I'd show you but I'd have to fish it out the trash. Kulfi - tastes like basic ice cream from the supermarket. When you know kulfi, you know this isn't even remotely close Literally a huge waste of money. So disappointed. This is my favorite Indian food place in the Slope. We ordered multiple times from here and have been to their little restaurant itself. Delivery is lightning fast. Always had our food within 20 min. Never any mess ups in orders, packed great and arrived hot! The restaurant is quiet and super clean. Everything on the menu is delicious. Chicken Sagwala (spinach) and Baigan Bhartha (mashed eggplant) are my absolute favorites! Vegetarian Samosas are out of this world! My latest obsession is Chicken Korma (chicken in cashew cream sauce)! I have been to Junoon and can't say which Chicken Korma was better! A chill, small spot. Seems that the owners are having a bit of trouble with fees, as they recently changed their lunch special conditions (now 30% on M-F), as of January 2019. That, however, doesn't change the quality of the food, which is top notch! We had the classic combo -- saag paneer and Chana masala with garlic naan. The two of us ate up ALL the food. Milky taste on the paneer like non other, and cinnamon tendencies in the Chana made me feel all warm inside. The garlic naan was great, somewhere in middle ground on the scale of super chewy to crispy. Medium density as well! Tons of garlic, I loved it. I think it's a tambrin sauce. I also had the Punjabi mushroom which was good, the rice was good the samosas were dry to me. I would try this place again because it was good. I was absolutely amazed by the quality of the food. The daughter of the owner of the restaurant served us. She was pleasant and sweet. We ordered the masala chicken for appetizers. It was moist, flamed well seasoned. She explained a cumin paste that paired well with the chicken. It was delicious! For dinner, we ordered buttered chicken, chicken tikka masala, reg and garlic naan. Oh my gosh, the rich flavors just took over!!!!! So tender and flavorful. For dessert I had the Raas malai. It was so rich and creamy. I must say of the years of having Indian food, this raas malai was the best I have ever had! It was homemade. Will make this my date night spot. read more
