I am writing this review still fuming from an awful experience with two women working tonight (10/25). In short, we ordered chicken tikka masala and garlic naan through Uber Eats but then received the entirely wrong order an hour later. We got the got the issue corrected with Uber Eats, and I called the restaurant to ask that they remake our order for which we would pick it up and pay for it in person. The main woman who was assisting asked me where the incorrect order was as she claimed it is a requirement that we bring the wrong order back to the restaurant to be issued a full refund (?). I said I was not made aware that we had to do this, and furthermore, I know that based on hygienic food practices, they should be trashing any food that goes to the wrong customers... especially since the food has now changed hands multiple times with a delivery driver and being in our home... She insisted that this was not true and that the food could be used to feed their employees, which may be the case, but again, this was not clear and I am skeptical of any restaurant who accepts back food that has been out of their sight for nearly 2 hours at that point. She and the other woman continued arguing with me on this - at one point insisting they will send their delivery driver back with me to pick up the food?! Absolutely not. I was feeling incredibly harassed at this point - and honestly between being hungry and pregnant, I communicated this and that this situation was stressful, but they were continuing to argue with me. The second woman started to dismiss me, even. I asked my husband to come in and take care of the bill because I had to remove myself from that situation, and I could see him through the window continuing to be berated by the main woman for her assumption that we would be trashing the food that was incorrectly delivered. (I never stated this, I did state that I am aware that restaurants have to throw this food out.) He confirmed that she was being just as argumentative with him. This is such a shame because Indian Spice was such a wonderful part of our experience when we last lived in Brooklyn, and based on this, I would never order from here again. read more

Indian Spice was a pleasant surprise to find. Passed by in a walk through the neighborhood with my girlfriend. We were hungry, walking until something caught our eye. We ordered the sweet and sour eggplant as an appetizer and struggled over decision paralysis before settling on chicken tikka masala and a mango lassi for her and lamb vindaloo for me, plus a bread basket. Our waitress, seemingly oblivious to the notion of profit, warned us we were ordering too much bread before saying, "You could always bring some home," and explaining that the bread basket would consist of our choice of four different naan. More decision paralysis! We picked plain, garlic, onion, and peshwari naan. The eggplant was good, breaded and fried and served with cilantro and tamarind chutneys. Our entrees came out soon after we finished. My girlfriend enjoyed her chicken, and my lamb was tender and spicy without being overwhelmingly so. Each entree was accompanied by a portion of basmati jeera, and the rice was perfectly cooked. The naan were all good, and my girlfriend and I both agreed the peshwari naan was the winner of the pack. The sweet, nutty bread complimented and contrasted the spicy curry of my lamb vindaloo, and my "best bite" was mopping up some of the sauce with it. Sure enough, we had leftovers both of our entrees and 3/4 pieces of naan (two guesses as to which got eaten on the spot), and lunch the next day was delicious. Four for dinner just before 7pm. Other than one couple, the place was empty so we were seated immediately. The place is well lit, clean and visually appealing. The server took our order, repeated everything correctly without writing anything down. I prefer servers to write things down so there is less chance of them forgetting anything. Haha. We ordered four dishes, samosas and a chai. We were given a complimentary appetizer which was nice but the chai did not come until mid meal and not until after we reminded them that we had ordered it. The dishes were not bad but we were disappointed that they were not good. This is a cute little neighborhood spot in Park Slope. A fellow Yelp Elite friend and I went here for lunch after seeing that they offer a lunch special, which includes 1 appetizer and 1 entrée, as well as basmati rice, naan bread, cucumber raita, and mango chutney. We decided to sit indoors because it was a bit chilly outside and there was no one else dining there at the time. It was nice and cozy inside with elegant chandeliers, along with a theme of pretty wood colors, purple, and gold. I got a mango lassi, which was wonderfully thick, delightfully creamy, and just the right amount of sweetness. For my appetizer, I ordered the Lamb Sheesh Kabob, which was plated beautifully. The lamb was sliced into pieces on top of onion, with savory green sauce shaped into a swirled star. The lamb was perfectly tender, succulent, and juicy. It was also seasoned with special spices and herbs, making it burst with flavor. I selected the Goan Salmon Curry for my entrée, which is not something I normally order because I wanted to try something unique. The salmon were in nicely sized chunks with plenty of tomato cream sauce. The salmon melted in my mouth, and the curry sauce was oh so tasty and flavorful. On the side, there was basmati rice with peas on top and a salad. The rice was fluffy and warm. Salad was decent and added a fresh, crunchy element to the dish. If you don't have a delivery person, then don't accept delivery orders. And if you don't have a delivery person, then don't wait until the time the food should have already been delivered to notify me that my food is getting cold sitting on your counter. Okay food, not bad but not that great either. For the price though, I guess you can't complain too much. I ordered their "One Appetizer, One Entree" for $15 which is basically a special that a lot of Indian restaurants have. Your choice of an app & entree that also comes with rice and naan. Total came out to about $20 with tax and fees. There weren't any pictures on here of what it looked like packaged for delivery and I wanted to make sure that the meat and rice came separate so I called to ask. The man I spoke to was kind of rude as if I was asking a stupid question but whatever. He confirmed they are packaged separately so I placed the order. They have 10 options to choose from for the app and 12 for the main. They have lots of vegetarian options as well but I will say besides chicken and veggies, the only other option you have for an entree is salmon. The upside is they don't charge you extra for it being seafood. They don't offer lamb or goat at all in that section. I opted with the malai kebab for my app because I've never had it and it sounded good. I wasn't in the mood for ground chicken and didn't want to take a chance on the lamb. And I went with the Tikka Masala for the main to be safe considering I'd never ordered from them before. The kebab was really sad. There was not ounce of salt on that chicken. Two little lemon slices doesn't do much on a piece of chicken that has absolutely no flavor to it. I had to season it myself and dipped it in the green sauce to make it decent. Would not order again. Now the Tikka Masala was pretty good, but then again it's Tikka Masala. Extremely mild so if you don't like spicy, that's the way to go. The chicken inside was good, nothing special. Very pungent tomato-y flavor and nice and thick consistency that paired really well with the naan. My biggest problem was with the rice, I really did not enjoy it at all and it went uneaten. The picture I posted was taken immediately after I poured some sauce on it for my first bite. After that it went in the garbage and I ended up just eating the naan with my chicken. I've never seen basmati rice that looks like that, I could be wrong but it looked like there were both short and long grains in it. Not only that but there was so much coconut milk used, it was overwhelming and it gave the rice a mushy, almost chewed up like texture when I was eating it. I love basmati rice so it highkey brought the meal from a solid 5 to a 2. I literally look forward to pouring sauce on it and going to town. The app was ehh. The rice was a no. One of the best meals I've had in a long time while dining out can be credited to Indian Spice. Getting familiar with restaurants along 7th Avenue, Indian Spice was a first time experience for us this evening. And a really good one. Gorgeous interior as seen from the outside, a chalkboard indicated complimentary appetizer per table and after viewing the menu, we were sold to try it. The restaurant had a lovely ambiance with sparkling chandeliers, exposed brick and a bar at the far end of the restaurant. For a Monday night, it also had a good number of patrons. Once sat, we were served Papadam with the trio of chutneys: coriander, tamarind and onion. For our complimentary appetizer, we decided on the shrimp with poori bread. This was delicate and delicious. The shrimp was coated in a thick tomato like sauce and we took the opportunity to sop up the deliciousness with the poori bread. Poori, if familiar, is fried and served inflated. It wasn't overly oily like some that I've tried in the past. Service was always en pointe as per our lovely server Shameen. She was attentive, helpful and very pleasant. We were made to feel welcomed from the start. For main we chose mango chicken and (I was in the mood for) chicken Jalfreezi. The latter wasn't on the menu but they offered to prepare it with chicken. The traditional method was prepared vegetarian style. For a side bread, we selected a mint paratha. The main entrees were served in a sectioned plate containing basmati rice and side salad. We even asked for more rice and yet another generous portion was served at no extra charge. Same for the chutneys--we requested a couple re-fills. We were always accommodated. The food served at Indian Spice resembles that of a high quality restaurant one would expect in Manhattan--tasty, with the flavorful seasonings (in fact, I observed it was unusually not spicy), satisfying portions, reasonably priced (our entrees were $13.00), great service and cozy atmosphere. Unfortunately, it's to the detriment of their customers dining in as what felt like hundreds of delivery orders rolled out the door before we could get ourselves a check. I'm not mad about that though. I get that you've got to cater to the part of the business that keeps the lights on, and waiting a while for a check doesn't bother me. What actually did bother me though, was that the food was...kind of bland. And while bland food has its place, it's not in India. We shared the chicken tikka masala, the lamb madras, the aloo motor gobi, the shrimp bhuna, a few appetizers and some naan (obviously). While the madras at least had some heat and the shrimp was pretty solid, the tikka masala was nearly flavorless, and the chicken was rubbery. The aloo motor gobi was a watery, colorless mush that could've been anything. I did enjoy the sweet and sour eggplant though; it had a beautiful light fry, and I'll always order something when the description is, "If you like eggplant, get this." Perhaps it was an off day. The food here is very tasty! Service is a bit slow but very friendly and pleasant. We ordered samosas for the table, lentil soup, and an eggplant dish as appetizers. I particularly liked the samosas because they come with two different dipping sauces. I ordered a vegetable dish- I forget what it's called- with potatoes, cauliflower, peas, etc. We also ordered a bread basket, which was a great decision for a party of 4. We generally go to the kinds of cheap Indian places where everything is pre-made and sitting in warming trays. And those are great places! But we happened to be going right by here on the way to work, so we though we'd treat ourselves to a fancier meal. Wow. It was worth it. Excellent quality everything, from the dahl and rice to the tandoori entrees. Nothing too greasy, just lots of flavor. If you're smaller people you can share an entree or take half of it home for leftovers. They do orders to go for pickup and delivery. Make sure to request utensils if you need, because they aren't automatically in the bags. There's also outdoor seating, and they look like they're ready for indoor dining when that's permitted. I'm taking off a star because we found a staple in my meal, and that kind of carelessness always worries me. I get that they use staples in the kitchen, maybe for closing bags or stapling receipts or whatever, but how does it get in the food??? Staple aside, the food is great, the service is excellent, and I'm sure we'll be back to explore more of the menu. read more

After the Other Half taproom grand opening on Tuesday the wife and I were craving Indian food so we opened yelp and saw this greatly reviews place nearby. We went over and ordered some Samosas and Aloo Fried as appetizers. The samosas were so good but the Aloo Fried were mind blowing. I loved them! Next we ordered our entrees. She had the chicken Dan saag which she loved. It was easy on her stomach, the spices mild, and plenty leftover for lunch the next day. So I had lunch here with a friend. We shared the Pakora and samosas appetizers. The samosa was quite good, nice and crisp on the outside with a well balanced filling. The pakora was tasty but a bit oily, but their tamarind sauce did cut into it. I had the lamb vindaloo and my friend had the shrimp tandoori, we were very happy with our choices. This Indian restaurant is perfect-perfect only if you are a fussy old aunt on a diet and visiting from the suburbs. The first big minus is the atmosphere/decor which just feels off. It's trying to come off as fancy and Manhattan like but instead feels like your at a mall or Outback Steakhouse . What is so ironic is most Indian restaurants in Manhattan don't try to do this, if they are fancy it is in an "Indian way" and when they are not fancy they are over the top schlocky in a fun way, but either way you know your in an Indian restaurant, it is not generic like this place. Usually atmosphere/decor is last on my list, but this was just sooo wrong, it set the wrong tone immediately and unfortunately was a premonition of what was to come in the food. I hope my photo will demonstrate what they do, Fancy presented food but little of it. I had curry, but all it was was pieces of meat, mostly sauce and no vegetables mixed in. There was the smallest dollop of rice and some fancy shaved cucumber that looked good on the pretentious plates. When I was finished I was not even full!! I came in for a lunch special and there were no extras just the main dish. I didn't even think of ordering anything else, as mango lassi was the highest priced I've ever seen. Let me say my curry tasted fine, but I'll save the worst/best for last. --- People have said service is slow. I didn't find it so-maybe 10 minutes at the most-but what makes it seem excruciatingly sloooow is nothing came before the main meal. Most Indian places give papadum bread before the meal, this place didn't have it listed, so I shrugged my shoulders thinking "weird, guess they don't have it." BUT then as I was leaving, they gave it to a lady before her meal. I couldn't overlook this, I called their attention to it, their excuse? "some dishes take longer to make, that's why she got it", WTF?! Bullsh&@t!!! Imagine an Italian restaurant used this excuse if you didn't get bread beforehand like everyone else?There is no excuse for this behavior, it is nickel and diming, it is bad customer service and they are obviously treating people differently and trying to get away with it. I know this restaurant likes to comment and "correct the record" on yelp, so I'd love for them to try and explain this away, so I can yell B.S. ! at them. What they need to do is accept they fu?&d up and say it'll never happen again. To their credit they gave me papadum to go, which is nowhere near to having it before the meal. This was one of my fav restaurants. I have patronized them on several occasions. Unfortunately, they have lost my business and me referring anyone to them. On two occasions I had to kill roaches in their establishment. This most recent time (June 10, 2023) There was a roach crawling on the table and two on the bench I was sitting on. My neighbor sitting a table away, declined her food, paid for what she ate(appetizer) and left after confirming that she had seen me kill two roaches. I couldn't finish my food and they were NOT gracious enough to comp our food, instead the manager disappeared and the help brought us a bill. We paid it and left. My fear is that if the dining room is full of bold roaches who don't mind coming out while your dining then what are the roaches in the kitchen doing? I mentioned to the staff about spraying and they insisted the roaches were coming in because the door was open! Lol it's a no for me! After not giving Indian Spice another go for several years, I decided to give them another chance, and once again was disappointed. The food is average at best; frankly, I cook better versions of everything I ordered at home, with the exception of the samosas, which I didn't order. And even that was slightly disappointing because the filling was mushy. The biggest disappointment however was the "aloo fried" with masala toppings, which turned out to be limp frozen French fries with a few drips of yoghurt and some pieces of red pepper, which were just awful. The vindaloo came Indian medium hot as requested, but it was way too tomatoey and seriously lacking in vinegar, cinnamon, and everything else that gives a good vindy depth of flavor. The Kerala crab curry definitely would not be served in Kerala; it was way too oily and the only thing remotely South Indian about it was the lone curry leaf. I was finding salvation in the baigan bartha, despite the mushy consistency, until I bit into a whole coriander seed. To top everything off, I had ordered for delivery, and the person who answered the phone was rude and hung up before I could even ask for a time frame. I have given Indian Spice it's last chance.
