The food and ambiance here did not disappoint! It's a small dim space with a beautiful bar area, very NYC style. The staff was all very friendly and accommodating. We started with the el camino drink, which is very nice if you like Cilantro. We then had the seasonal Nutcracker drink, which to me reminded me of an apple pie with hints of coconut, though there's no apple in it. We then had the mermaid chips (addictive!) and the fried oyster mushrooms, which were crispy with a nice sauce. Then...tacos! We tried the baja fish (winner), Mongolian beef (delightful), pork belly Bahn mi (tasty), Nashville kimchi chicken (very nice) and shiitake mushroom (solid). We were very satisfied by then (2 of us, 3 tacos a piece plus shared the two apps) but we made room for the dumplings. The shrimp and Thai basil were great and had the most amazing sauce, which I just wanted a whole bowl of! The flavors actually reminded me of Vietnamese phó. The chicken and ginger dumplings were pretty good and had Thai flavors (think fish sauce). By then we could not fit dessert but we will be back to this establishment! All I can say is I WILL be back tomorrow to finish working my way thru this menu. The char shui was freaking delicious. I've never had it cooked so perfectly the fat just melted in my mouth. I was shocked to find a place like this outside of the Manhattan. This cozy Sparkhill restaurant was perfect for date night. We sat inside but they have an outdoor patio as well. The staff, service, and food were superb. I actually can't stop thinking about each dish we tried. I don't normally like to share my food but I suggest getting one of everything and sharing. Had dinner at Katina tonight, and it was amazing. Chef Chris Holland is, without a doubt, among the most talented and innovative chefs in the United States (just watch the episodes of Chopped that he's featured for confirmation). The food is spectacular, and the service warm, friendly and informal. If you are within 50 miles of this place, it's worth the trip. This is a fun, modern take on small, sharing plates. Everything has an Asian flare. The broccoli bites and eggplant chips were delicious! I could snack on the eggplant chips! Their drink menu has a nice variety and the drinks were great! Everything that came to the table was fresh and tasty. The only complaint I have is four of us ordered about 12 different small plates to try and they basically all came out together. There should have been some time between the different tastings. Our waitress admitted it was her mistake to not space them out more. We will definitely give it a second try and would recommend spacing the samplings to enjoy them all. read more

When the fried oyster mushrooms are addictive, you know you're at the right place. Kantina is a wonderful new addition to the area, and has something for everyone: you can happily go vegetarian or vegan, or have some steak yakitori. I need to go back for the mushrooms and the sticky rice with black beans. Everything is shareable, and the servers are warm and enthusiastic. The item I was most eager to try the fried oyster mushrooms were good but could be much improved w a more delicate coating and why so sweet? Between the hard coating and too sweet it doesn't really matter what you're frying. Pork dumplings were dry and tough. And the short rib was short on rib, 1 little bite of meat. I really wanted to try this place but then I saw this 4% "kitchen appreciation" fee! What!! You've got to be kidding!! I won't go there. That's ridiculous. Tips are for servers. Kitchen staff gets paid. If you want them to get more, raise the prices! You don't want to "significantly raise menu prices " but I would be paying more anyway. Makes no sense. Drinks were interesting - pricey. Food was tasty. The tacos were good, lots of sesame seeds- loved it! Dumplings were ok- Great sauce but the inside was very pasty - ( chicken ones). The male bartender was not welcoming and short with his explanations when questioned on the interesting drinks. We ordered an old fashion which he served with crushed ice ? When we asked why? he said you only get a block of ice with the high end bourbon??? Went on and on.... The bill had a 4% KITCHEN APPRECIATION charge??? How obnoxious! You want to charge extra for something??? Ask and be up front. They just include it... what a turn off. This is too bad as all of the negative here could have been avoided it. We have dined here for three iterations (Relish, Divine Bar, and now Kantina). It has ALWAYS been CONSISTENTLY great, and the meal we had last night was no exception. I will tell you hands down, out of the several dozen reviews I have on here and the hundreds (thousands?) of restaurants I have dined in over the years this was one of the best. The food, combined with the level of service and professionalism provided by the staff could not have been better, and any review less than 5 stars should be ignored. We started Shrimp Hand Roll (wild shrimp, nori, sticky rice, potato crunchers, white soy caramel, white ponzu, wasabi snow). We wrapped the nori around this lightly fried and perfectly seasoned concoction and went to town; like all the dishes we had the flavors were subtle but extremely unique and uniformly delicious. We followed this with the Cauliflower Mini Arepas (mini cauliflower arepas, tomatillo, queso fresco, thai caramel), which we might have enjoyed even MORE but we were already dining at such a high level that to say ANYTHING stood out that strongly from anything else would be misleading. Just delicious, with the sweetness of the caramel sauce offsetting the dry slight pungency of the cauliflower perfectly- a quartet of flavor delight. Thai shrimp and pork dumplings were also incredibly flavorful, and we finished with the Korean Hot Chicken (cornflake crusted chicken thigh, housemade kimchi, chili oil, kewpie mayo) and Pork Belly Banh Mi (sweet chili glaze, Thai slaw) as our mains. In both cases- as tasty as the description may sound- the finished product far exceeded any possible expectation. Somehow Chef Chris Holland managed to make dishes that would be thought of as somewhat heavy incredibly light to the extent that ALL the flavors of the dish were appreciated; there was a little less going on with the Pork Belly but it allowed the smokiness of the pork to shine through perfectly. It would be almost impossible to say what we liked best because WE LIKED EVERYTHING BEST. WHATEVER you are doing right now, stop and make a reservation before he goes on to the next concept and you lose the opportunity to eat here forever, because- if you are a hyper-foodie like me- to miss out on these flavors would be a loss of epic proportion. FINAL COMMENTS... clearly Holland has too much class to advertise on Yelps corrupt BS platform. They have chosen to hide two 5-star reviews (but unhesitatingly include the negative ones) and push other (not as well reviewed) area restaurants above his; I was a Yelp advertiser once until I realized how classless and unfair they were to business that didn't pay them. C'mon Yelp, you can be do better than this! read more

Totally loved this place--and have been to its predecessor restaurants, starting with Relish. The menu is solid--loved the tuna appetizer (so good) and General Tso's Blossoms most of all, but the rest of the family was pretty happy, too (one slightly less adventurous eater was grumpy about the spinach appetizer, but she ate all of it, despite not being much of a veggie person). I had the tacos on lettuce wraps--could have easily only eaten 2 instead of 3, given the apps, but they were great. Will definitely come again. read more

Full disclosure, it's hard to be fully objective when the chef of his former restaurant becomes the owner. It's difficult to separate the two and comparison becomes inevitable. Sadly, that's the case here and while I was not head over heels of the former D'Vine Bar, eating at Kantina makes me miss D'Vine terribly. The entire meal was very confusing. Despite the large golf scorecard we filled out with our selections, we still got a couple of items we didn't order. There was no order in how food items arrived. The portions were small and I felt like I was eating at some type of Asian fusion restaurant, there was no way to escape the Asian flavor. There was a man right behind our table yelling out the orders to the kitchen staff, that was annoying. Drinks, meh. We didn't try dessert because one selection showed up unexpectedly quite a bit of time after the rest of our food straggled out. And maybe I'm not aware of this new wrinkle, I realize there are credit card surcharges, but a "Kitchen Appreciation Fee" of 4%? That's pretentious, especially since I didn't really like my food. So went to this restaurant with friends and was quite disappointed. When you order the food they just put it on the table so no one knows who's food it is. So people eat others people food. The portions are very small for the price. The cocktails came out 3/4's full and they charge Manhattan prices. And to top it off they change a 4% Kitchen appreciation tip which doesn't go towards the regular tip. Unbelievable. read more
