Service is incredibly slow due to this being a family run type restaurant but food was delicious at reasonable prices. Portions are not super huge but seafood was fresh and flavours were on point. This is an EXCELLENT Japanese restaurant! I know what I'm talking about because I was born and raised in Japan. I ordered the sushi set and added a few à la carte nigiri (pictures): seared yellowtail, scalp, and sea urchin. Was it the best sushi I've ever eaten. Probably not, but they were all REALLY good. On top of it, their prices are amazing. With all that sushi with a 20% tip, it only came to $49 (CAD), which is only $34 (USD)! Unbelievable! They are only open from Friday through Sunday only for dinner. A reservation is a must. Highly recommended! read more

Best authentic Japanese in Whiterock/South Surrey. I'm a bit of a sushi snob after having lived in Tokyo for a couple of years. Lol. This little gem has been around for about 40 years and is located in a big old house (nothing fancy but looks aren't everything!) and designed with traditional tatami rooms. There are only about 8 rooms? total so it's limited seating but they offer take out too (take out only during COVID) -- best to visit their website for more hours and info. While the ambiance is unique, it does look a bit dated. This place also seems to have quite limited open hours. I was more concerned about what appeared to be many disoriented staff in the restaurant up the stairs from the entry, but nobody was welcoming or acknowledging me, until I waited and eventually had to walk up the stairs deeper into the restaurant myself. It was strange to see a sign stating some problem not being able to get anagi (sea eel) from Japan, so they are now serving unagi (fresh water eel) instead. It wasn't clear if they were serving Japanese unagi or one of the cheaper varieties from other countries. Strange as I had just had Anagi in two other food restaurants in the last few days. I assume it was just a cost savings play. After I was finally acknowledged by what seemed to be confused staff, I asked if they served a white meat version of their chicken teriyaki. The answer was no and they only served "mixed meat" which I assume is heavy on the dark meat. Nothing was impressing me about the restaurant and everything I observed was screaming cheap products to maximize profits. Nothing impressed me in this restaurant and luckily I just left. I wonder if previous owners sold this place as older Yelp reviews seemed to indicate it may be better. This just appears to be another crappy unprofessional restaurant trying to make money but not doing things in a quality manner. From outside, looks like just a house, but inside, super unique! Once you get in, you will be directed to one of the several private rooms for seating. You'll take your shoes off before you get in a room. No worry, you don't have to sit on a floor, there is a hole below the table so you are like sitting on a chair. I love how each party has their own privacy and the place is never loud and obnoxious no matter how busy they are, and trust me sometimes they are BUSY! I am a Japanese national. This is the only authentic Japanese restaurant in South Surrey. All others are owned and or cooked by Koreans or Chinese. Handling raw fish, one should eat at Japanese restaurants with chefs properly trained in Japan or by Japanese chef.. Although a little on the pricey side, what you get here is authentic. I love Kappa. Love it. And if you look at the star rankings I've historically dished, you'll see that I'm not an easy judge. The location is out of the way. The building is kind of quaint, weird, however you want to term it. There is limited seating, so if you have a big group (I would say over 8, it's too many. I'll cut through the crap first. If you're looking for a cheap bento box dinner or just some sort of chicken or beef teriyaki, etc., you'll be disappointed because that sort of dinner is expensive here ($20 or so for a dinner set) and no matter where you go it's not really too different. I've never ordered that stuff here myself, and never do here or anywhere else (unless it is AYCE). There's a reason why you would be hard pressed to find the teriyaki type dishes in Japan - it's because the Japanese don't eat them! Now. The food here is fresh. I love the sushi. I love the sashimi. And it passes my toro test with flying colors. A sushi place is not a good place without good toro, and Kappa has great toro. My wife's favorite all time roll is the Grieve's Roll here. It's basically a sweet potato tempura roll with avocado on top. It IS really good. And the tempura is still warm and crispy inside. I get the White Rock roll too, which is an out of control, way too big roll, but it's good. So stay with the sushi, rolls, and sashimi and you should be OK. It's not cheap, but it's worth it. If you think it's too expensive you've been too brainwashed by the $4.99 for 18 pieces crap that you can get all over the place in Vancouver. So not only have your senses been desensitized, you've lost your taste buds too. Plus is one of the very few Japanese run places in Greater Vancouver so treasure it. Best sushi in Vancouver by far. I pride myself on my sushi judgement, and Kappa takes the cake. The quality and attention to detail on all their food is unbelievable. Everything from the in-house soy sauce to the freshest of ingredients, makes Kappa stand out from all the other sushi places. The staff is actually Japanese which is not common, and service is great! Perhaps an above average Japanese restaurant for White Rock but this place is mediocre by Vancouver standards. The prices are very high and the portions are small, our dinner came to about $30/person and we all agreed that we had room for a second dinner. The building looks awful from the outside and was fairly lackluster and dated on the inside but fairly clean and well kept . There were a few items that were pretty good, others that left us quite disappointed. The beach roll was excellent, good combination of flavours and a well presented roll. Aburi toro was great and at $7.5 for 3 pieces, reasonably priced as well. The salmon avocado salad was awful, very stingy portion of sashimi and a few leaves don't make it a salad; pretty to look at but for $10 this really felt like a waste of money. Not only that but it came after all of our entrees and hot items A few of us in our party ordered the teriyaki dinner courses and the teriyaki portion is one of the smallest I've ever seen. Service was pretty decent but slow overall but I dont get how this place has such high ratings as there's really nothing worth coming for. read more

My cousin and I were looking for a good sushi joint one Saturday night. After reading the very positive reviews on Yelp we decided on Kappa. Unfortunately I was pretty disappointed. The restaurant is definitely very different and more authentic than your average sushi place. The tables are in little rooms and you have to remove your shoes before entering. However, the decor felt like it needed a bit of a face lift and there was no background music playing which was an issue because we were only separated from the table beside us by a small curtain and could hear them talking quite clearly. My cousin and I felt a tad uncomfortable talking to one another without anything to drown out the other conversations going on so close to us. I had the miso soup, an avocado roll and gomae; my cousin had miso soup, a California roll and gyoza. The miso soup was VERY overly salty and the avocado in my roll was very overripe - there were lots of brown spots I ended up picking out. Also, the roll itself wasn't rolled very well and the rice was a bit scarce. The gomae was pretty average. My cousin said his California roll and gyoza were good but nothing out of the ordinary. The service was on the slow side as well and when we finally did get our bill they had put it all on one without asking. To be fair we did order very generic items from the menu so perhaps this is the type of place that is better for it's more authentic sushi. Unfortunately what we happened to order wasn't the greatest though :( read more

I was excited to try this place because we are new in the hood and judging by the yelp reviews, I was very hopeful that this would be our new "sushi" place. The place is quite cute. The restaurant itself in in a small house. I wouldn't have known it was a Japanese restaurant if I was just passing it. I mean there is a sign but who would think there would be restaurant inside a house? The proprietors are Japanese and the ambience isn't bad. The place does look like it needs a new coat of paint but I liked the rooms they have. Only thing is, you may have to share the room with other people and it's divided by just a curtain so you can definitely hear others' conversations while having dinner. We ordered spicy tuna, spicy salmon roll, gyoza, miso soups, salmon sashimi and dynamite roll. The fish was very fresh. The sashimi was about $18.00 for 9 pieces which isn't a bad deal. And they were very fresh. Yummy! The dynamite roll was quite tasty as well. The prawn tempura had a nice crunch to it. The rolls were great too because there weren't too much rice and had a good portion of fresh fish. The only problem was the spicy sauce they used. It had too much green onion in it and was quite overwhelming. And I tend to compare spicy rolls to another Japanese restaurant we often went to when we used to live in Yaletown. Best Japanese in White Rock/South Surrey. Staff is very friendly and attentive. When it gets, and it does from time to time, service can get slow/bottlenecked by the kitchen. But otherwise, it's ok. I think it was $15 for 5 pieces of Hamachi sashimi which is a bit on the pricey end wrt to Japanese restaurants I frequent. In fact, across the board, prices are on the high end of Japanese restaurants but for South Surrey - pretty much on par. Now, I love my sashimi. Hamachi, Kampachi, Madai, Shima-Aji are probably my favourites - they have Hamachi. They may have others but I suppose it's a matter of access and likely, they wont' sell all of it so most of the time, they don't carry it. I have had their Omakase - a chef's selection of 8-9 sashimi and it was not bad. I prefer not seeing salmon and tuna on their but again, their selection will be limited. They do have lots of cooked Japanese fare - the agedeshi tofu is mediocre but makes up in quantity. The tempura is really, really good. The miso..meh. Sunomono is good as is their chicken teriyaki. Chicken karage and yakitori are also excellent. Their inari (rice wrapped in sweet beancurd/tofu) is awesome and a steal of a price. We have two kids - and it's a great place to bring them because they love the private rooms and we get to lounge with them. Too bad my daughter doesn't eat sushi. Are the better Japanese restaurants, in my opinion, yes but they are farther off in Richmond and Vancouver. Kappa is close enough in distance and quality to keep me coming back - and I have about a dozen times. read more

I wouldn't say Kappa is the best sushi place in White Rock, but it is definitely the best Japanese restaurant you can find in Surrey. Kappa Japanese restaurant is a small building filled with traditional Japanese decorations, which allows us to enjoy their culture and delicious food at the same time! The price is reasonably acceptable and the varieties of food is just amazing~ I also loved the waitresses, their beautiful smiles and joyful voice just open the gate of my hunger, and their service is just perfection. 100% recommended and 200% would go again. read more

Small tiny portions, the sushi had very little rice on them and the texture is mushy and too soft. The sashimi is almost as thin as the ginger slices. Unfortunately not worth the trip. Sushi was mediocre at best with the low spot being the King Crab Sunamono. After one bite we both couldn't even touch it as the smell and taste was simply off. We mentioned it to our waitress and carried on with the rest of our meal. The remainder of our order consisted of a California Roll which we hastily substitutes for the King Crab roll after our poor experience with the Sunamono. We added on a Peace Arch roll, spicy agadashi tofu, mixed tempura and chicken karage. All, unfortunately, unmemorable. At the till we again mentioned the poor King Crab Sunamono and our server was happy to ask her manager who came down and actually argued with us. She even told us not to tip our server as she chuckled. We did as she was very pleasant. Definitely won't be back. Plenty of places with much better and fresher sushi. read more

Wow. Just had dinner there for the first and last time. Food was not good, but the worst part was the king crab. I was really excited when I saw the rating and menu online before going. My boyfriend loves king crab so we decided to get the king crab sunamono and king crab roll. As soon as we took our first bite of the crab in the sunamono we both were put off. It was so terribly fishy. We grabbed the first waitress that went by and quickly changed out the king crab roll for a Cali. When she came to collect the bowls for the sunamono and asked if we were done my boyfriend said yes it was too fishy to eat. When the bill came there was no discount. At the front counter to pay I asked the waitress to maybe give us a 50% discount on that one dish as we didn't eat it because it was fishy. She said she had to ask her boss and went off. Then we heard her boss flipping out and arguing with her. After waiting and listening to this for a few minutes her boss came up and started arguing with me saying that other people had ordered it that night with no complaints and had we said something at the time they would have made another. I politely pointed out what had occurred earlier and that we had told the waitress that we didn't eat it because it was fishy. She refused to discount or take it off. I said fine, knowing they had lost my business so it was really their loss. I never write reviews. The reason I am writing this is because of what she did next. She was clearly the owner. When she punched in the Visa card and passed it to me, she told me to not leave a tip in order to be reimbursed for it. Wow. Rip off the very young server was what she thought would square us up. Nope. I left a tip for the waitress and now you too. Don't give this place your time or money. read more

By far my favorite sushi in the PNW. My husband's family introduced me to the place (they're in Langley) and we can't get enough! There's always a Kappa trip for every special occasion. Owned and operated by a lovely Japanese couple, husband in the back cutting and cooking and wife in the front serving...so yes, sometimes it can't take a while but well worth the wait! Make sure and call ahead to make a reservation and expect to spend anywhere from $30-$50 a person depending on how much you love sushi - premium prices for premium sushi! I highly suggest the assorted sashimi and assorted sushi as well as the veggie or mixed tempura. Love love love! read more

We had dinner at Kappa today, good food, friendly service. Will be back again, need reservation before we go. Our server is friendly, but newly train, forgot to bring us many things we ask for. I think kitchen staffs not enough, I had to wait 20 minutes until my main course's served. That took too long for just tempura and beef teriyaki. read more

We love Kappa! The owner seems to take great pride in the quality of fish he uses. They have amazing Gyoza, beef sashimi, spicy agedashi tofu, seared spicy tuna and I love yoshi's bbq salmon belly. We try lots of different things but almost always get those items. More on the expensive side but very high quality. Staff are super nice. We go once a week because we can't live without it. They are a smaller restaurant so it's good to call ahead and there has been the odd time that our food has taken a bit but always worth it. read more

This is one of the better sushi restaurants in White Rock, however, their customer service isn't amazing. I placed a takeout order last night over 2 hours in advance of my pick up time. I was getting off of work and planned to pick my food up on the way home. 10 minutes before my pick up time and when I was nearly there, the restaurant called and informed me that due to "the kitchen being busy" my order would be delayed at least 40 minutes. The girl on the phone offered a short apology but was generally rather dismissive. My order was not big (a tuna appy, one roll, and 2 nigiri) and having ordered well in advance, I was not impressed. In short, good food but they don't seem to value their customers and their business. I will definitely think twice before returning. To add to the frustration: I actually recommended this place to a friend last week, however, would now encourage them to visit Taka sushi instead. read more
