Best sushi in Langley. Love their special rolls! They are huge and a great price. Family owned small business. I love the authentic Japanese decor and the comfortable privacy of the many private booth-rooms.

    Nabeyaki udon

It was a cold night and I wanted something soupy. I ordered the nabeyaki udon. It was ok though the broth was way too salty that I could not drink it. The prawns and mussel (only 1) and chicken were very salty too as they soaked up the broth. I left half the udon behind as it just got to me. Lucky I was not very hungry that night otherwise I would still be hangry. The other astounding thing was the entire restaurant has only 1-2 soup spoon?!? I went to ask for the spoon and was told that. They gave me a metal regular spoon before finding a soup spoon in the kitchen. Service was ok. The place looked nice though with booths which were quite private and quiet. I will not come here again. Not my first choice if I'm in Langley.

My friend C and I were looking for food in Langley and we came across Maru Japanese Restaurant while searching on Yelp. We went on Boxing day and we were wise to call to make sure that they were open. When we arrived the restaurant was pretty empty. We were one of the 3 tables being occupied. I like the interior decor here. They have have separated booth seats. Very traditional Japanese design. The place is ran by Korean. I guess sushi for Langley standard was not bad. I ordered the Unagi bowl and I was hoping it to be a lot more tastier. The Unagi bowl came with miso soup. The miso soup was a bit salty. The unagi was very thinly sliced and carefully placed on top of a lot of rice. Portion size was small. Well lots of rice and very thinly sliced unagi. The bowl costed $13.95. Flavor was slightly lacking too. The tea here was pretty good. Good thing that there was free working wifi and free parking just outside the restaurant. Note that the prices here are definitely pricier but food quality was slightly lacking based on the price. Service was not great either. Probably because my friend and I were sitting in a booth and it was hard for the servers to notice us. Also the 2 servers working that night were too busy talking to the sushi chef. Another thing I found hilarious was that when my friend asked for a spoon, the server told her that the whole restaurant only had 1 spoon and I already got the one. But later they came back with a metal spoon. Guess they only had one metal spoon and one plastic spoon (which I was already using). I am not sure if I would go back. Definitely not my first choice for dinner.

    Ramen with chicken.

I ordered a ramen and I'd give it a decent 7/10. Their was a lot of bean sprouts which reminded me of a pho bowl. The bowl is missing something to make it taste and look a lot better - like those squiggly little toppings found in some ramen bowls. But it is located in a small town of Langley, so they should find some way to attract more customers. Maybe offer more variety of ramen bowls instead of just chicken. I received a complimentary salad bento which was decent. That counts as extra points for the restaurant. When we were served water, they should have offered straws, but they didn't. I believe that complimentary straw is a common courtesy. Offer mints, or toothpicks, and make it clear that we should pay for our check up front. We were not sure and waited at the table.

We shared a party sushi for four people and an order of assorted tempura. We received a complimentary bowl of miso soup and some edamame for each person. That was a nice gesture as we waited for our food to arrive. The sushi was well made and we enjoyed some wild salmon nigiri. The sushi selection was good. We were able to try a variety of items including some spicy rolls. The tempura was perfectly fried and we received two bowls of the tempura dipping sauce. Overall, service was good. Our server checked up on us regularly to refill water. Food arrived fairly quickly. This is a good Japanese food option in Langley. The seafood was fresh and good service. There was more than enough food to feed four adults.

Maru has done renovations and it looks fabulous with the new darker color scheme going on. The new booths are an added touch with them being a lot more stable as the old ones were flimsy. I have to get on my hobby horse for a minute: The dine in rolls are bigger than the take out rolls. Ok, I'm good now. There is a large booth in the back for 10+ people and you can leave your shoes on and outer booths that can hold four people that kind of have a private feel to them but at times it seems like the servers forget about you at times but hey, it does get pretty busy here at times. Like my brother says the menu is very large and they have a great assortment of specialty rolls like the "Crunch Roll" (California roll with tempura bits and mildly spicy sauce) Dragon Roll, Hot Night Roll, and my fave (just for the name) Sexy Lady Roll. I recommend everything here as all of the choices are delicious, some of my picks include - deep fried California roll - yam roll - BC roll (best crispy salmon skin ever)

Awesome place to go for sushi! Everything was freshly made and the spicy salmon roll was probably the best I'd ever had. The seating they have here is so cute, too! I love the little semi-hidden booths. It would be cute for a date night, for sure. Prices seem reasonable, compared to what I'm used to in Seattle.

The tuna sashimi is CAD$10+ (I believe) but it's very fresh and flavorful.

This was one of the first sushi places I went to with my family just because it was across our church. I was kind of skeptical at first because its surrounding buildings were all abandoned. Man, I was really surprised when I first went inside. It was so pretty and it had little booths. The sushi rolls are awesome (BC rolls) but what really made me love the place was their sashimi. I got the 6 piece tuna sashimi and even if it was a bit hard and cold at the center but it was very flavorful. I always hate it when I order sashimi at other restaurants but they give me nigiri but this place knows what's up. The service is always great there, no doubt. The staff are very knowledgeable of the menu and will help you out if you're craving a type of food. I make sure I come here every once in a while whenever my parents have choir practice across the street and they never disappoint.

    20 piece assorted Sashimi

Nice presentation and assortment on 20 piece Sashimi plate. Will definitely return Miso soup and starter salad was basic fare. I'll skip these next time and go for a larger Sashimi plate

Tenpura - seafood (slice of fish, seafood stuffed vegetable and vegetable(shiitake) 9 pieces of sushi Daily miso soup - clam Dessert - kinako and mitarashi dango Chawan mushi was great. I can taste fish based broth and egg custard was very silky and smooth. Decent amount of ingredients sush as shrimp, slice of fish , bean and shimeji mushroom. I wish they served it slightly cooler than too hot. Ankimo - Great item. Monkfish liver was rich and paired with scallop and shrimp so well. Sauce was just ok. Grilled black cod was another great item. Crispy and juicy, just perfectly done. Blue fine tuna was covered by salty marinated sauce which was great when wrapped with seaweed. Cooked egg was just ok Tenpura - Seafood stuffed vegetable was my favorite. Others were also decent. Highlight and stand out item was 9 pieces of sushi. Honmaguro(bluefine tuna) was good. Shari(sushi rice) was nicely seasoned with vinegar, very mild and which I liked it. Tuna was delicious. Sea breem(MADAI) was another good piece. Delicious. Aburi Toro was nicely seared. The restaurant has a cozy, no-frills interior with dark wood tables and a casual, welcoming atmosphere. It's not a place that tries to be trendy or upscale--instead, it focuses on doing one thing exceptionally well, and that's serving perfectly executed katsu. The space can get busy, which is always a good sign, but the service remains efficient and friendly without feeling rushed. I started with the Assorted Katsu, which is easily the best choice if you want to experience the full range of what they offer. The plate was generously portioned, featuring pork, chicken, fish, and shrimp katsu alongside rice, shredded cabbage salad, pickles, and dipping sauces. The standout here is the texture--the panko coating is incredibly crisp, light, and airy without feeling greasy. Each type of katsu had its own distinct character: the pork was juicy and rich, the chicken tender and moist, the fish delicate and flaky, and the shrimp firm with a satisfying bite. The tonkatsu sauce added a sweet and savory depth, while the creamy dressing complemented both the meat and the cabbage perfectly. I also tried the Kimchi Cheese Katsu Nabe, which was a completely different but equally enjoyable experience. Served bubbling in a hot stone bowl, it combined crispy katsu with a tangy, slightly spicy kimchi broth and a generous layer of melted cheese. The contrast of flavors was excellent--the kimchi brought brightness and heat, while the cheese added richness and balance. As the katsu soaked in the broth, the outer layer softened slightly but still retained enough texture, while the inside remained juicy. It's definitely a heavier dish, but incredibly comforting and satisfying. One element that really stood out was the cabbage salad. Finely shredded and topped with a light creamy dressing, it provided a refreshing crunch that balanced out the richness of the fried dishes. It might seem simple, but it plays an essential role in keeping the meal from feeling overwhelming. Paired with the warm rice, pickles, and soup, everything comes together as a well-rounded set rather than just a plate of fried food. Overall, this place delivers exactly what you want from a katsu restaurant: consistently crispy cutlets, generous portions, and thoughtful balance in every meal. While the interior is simple and it can get busy, the food more than makes up for it. I would absolutely recommend trying the Assorted Katsu for variety and the Kimchi Cheese Katsu Nabe if you're in the mood for something rich and bold. It's a spot I'll definitely be returning to.

The space is understandably understated especially during the Christmas season. Totally ok with the lack of the holiday. We were sat quickly, water dropped right away. It's larger than we thought with two separate areas which would be great if you had a large party. Knowing little about the experience we ordered the mixed Katsu experience and the cheese Katsu, understanding as we always do that we will share the food. The cheese Katsu said right on the menu one order per table, which now makes sense. Eating four pieces of it is just simply too much cheese, so plan on one half per person, hence the one per table. The mixed Katsu had, prawn, fish, chicken and pork portions which were very tasty and a good quantity. Both came with accompanying salad and rice which rounded out the meal. The salad was excellent and the rice was well cooked. We will be back for sure, hopefully with more folks so we can experiment more.
