I'm really happy to know there is a Syrian bakery here in Salt Lake. I've had an itch for all kinds of pastries that I can't find, at least freshly made, and this place scratched that itch. My family met the owner of this shop and she was so kind, helpful, informative about the products and fresh goods she made. It's a smaller market but what they offer is great; large quantities of ghee, olives, they have Turkish Delights, all kinds of spices and herb blends for cooking... I came here on a whim between serving my car and needing to head up to Snowbird for Octoberfest. I popped in hoping to grab a few meat pastries to feed the family before we left for Snowbird. When you walk in your nose quickly identifies the burning incense. It's both a bakery and a mid-east store with everything from carpets to spices on sale. I was looking for meat pies and they only had 1 option that had meat, it was a flatbread with minced meat and a light tomato based sauce. It was decent, but not memorable. What I did enjoy was the haloumi filled fatayer, which were crispy and fluffy pastries (basically empanadas) with a light touch of mild white cheese similar to mozzarella. It's worth stopping by, but one thing to note is that the pastries come cold so you'll need to heat them up at home. read more

The honey-glazed zalabias are worth a shot if your sweet tooth is in charge but don't neglect the sfiha, a warm flatbread topped with spices and beef (sort of like a personal pizza). Added bonus is they stock multiple kinds and flavors of Turkish Delight, including ones topped with pistachios. While the sweet items looked amazing, we were looking for something a little more savory and picked the spinach and cheese, chicken schwarma, and beef pie. All 3 were delicious with the spinach one being my GF's favorite and the beef one with tomato sauce being mine. I really liked all the flavors and enjoyed how soft and flaky the pasta was. We stopped by for some treats that are not traditional for us and man, were we rewarded!! Nice little bakery on State Street that offers a selection of baklava and other pastry type items as well as some meat pies. There are also some kitchen staples, spices, and other ingredients that you won't find in other grocery stores. We tried the pistachio / chocolate baklava and the walnut baklava on this visit and found them to be absolutely amazing. SO flavorful and layered with goodness. We found them to be so delicious that we took a dozen home for later snacks. We are lucky to have diverse locations like this in our community and I will do my best to continue to stop by and support them. read more

Oh my goodness. I have found the best baklava in town!!! I've had Karim Bakery on my bookmarks list for a very, very long time, and I'm so glad I can check it off my list. I inquired about one pistachio pastry, and Karim asked if I'm a fan of pistachios. The answer is: very much so. He ushered me into the kitchen. I felt so special! I love being in kitchens! He brought me to a tray of fresh baklava and cut me a piece. Heavenly. So good. We ordered 10 pistachio baklava straight away. I also got walnut baklava, an anise cookie, sesame cookies, kunafa, and the pistachio roll. The pistachio baklava is hands down my favorite. The walnut baklava is also very good, but pistachio takes my heart. The anise cookie provided a very nice contrast to the sweetness of the baklava. That anise cookie was savory and had a lot of depth of flavor for a little cookie. Definitely going back for more of those. I also picked up a bottle of orange blossom syrup. I'm excited to use it in my tea. I've been wanting to get a bottle ever since I tried it with my tea at Mazza and fell in love with the flavor. Besides baked goods, the store also carries cheeses, spices, snacks, fruit candies, coffee, tea, nuts, and more. Karim used to be a veterinarian and is now a beekeeper with several of his own beehives. He had a rack of honey combs displayed in the middle of his store. He showed me lots of pictures of the honey collection process and shared some fun facts about bees. You can sample the honey from the honey combs - it's really good stuff! I got a large container of honey back home to use in my teas and to drink honey water. I'm excited to try some breads and savory eats next time. I went here based off the reviews. I was greeted right away and the kind gentleman showed me all the sweet and savory fresh baked goods, explained how to eat and heat them up at home. He showed me items in the cold section as well. I bought an assortment of fresh Turkish delight which they cut to your requested size and sell by the pound. I purchased a variety of sweet pastries, zatar bread, chicken shawarma pie and spinach and cheese pie. I also got fresh hummus, tabbouleh and baba ghanoush. Everything was FANTASTIC! The yogurt served with the zatar bread was incredible. They have a variety of market items that were not expensive. This place has wonderful customer service and good food. read more

I have nothing but love for this place and the family that owns it! Technically it was Karim's bakery last year and now a sweet Syrian couple owns it- they are equally cool and just as talkative as Karim was They've even added a few new things to the menu (kibbeh, Turkish pastries, etc) and are willing to make you fresh kunefe if you call in ahead of time. Go in and get AT LEAST a zatar/zfiha, literally anything with meat and baklava (I think they still have walnut, pistachio, cashew) or date cookies or danish...really anything. I've never tried anything in that glass display that I wouldn't buy twice...If you have no self-control, buy one of everything to share with some lucky soul. When they offer to heat up all of your food in the oven here, say yes (obviously). Add a barley soda or yogurt drink (if you've had these before you know they're super salty, but that's the point- one sip, one bite of food, swallow together). Wash, rinse, repeat. P.S. You can add their dried limes or pomegranate molasses to almost any recipe. read more

Karim is really half market/half bakery, and that is no bad thing! On the market side, you'll find coffee, tea, cookies, nuts, seeds, dried fruit (so many figs! Limes!), pickles, olives, baking supplies and mixes, rose water, packaged cookies, candy, halva, European butter, yogurt, cheese, and all the good stuff! Prepared food-wise there was hummus, baba ghannouj, and tabbouleh, and then ALLLL the baked goods: cream puffs, eclairs, bread pudding, cookies, so many varieties of baklava, and even some savory stuff, too: bread, pizza, and stuffed roll thangs (which you can request heated if you are consuming immediately). Most bakery items were not labelled, which isn't a huge deal, only I sort of felt like a jerk saying, "I'd like one of those shredded phyllo dough things, no not that one, but the one with the walnuts, no to the left of that," or whatever. The gentleman assisting me, who I believe was the owner, happily answered my numerous questions, and as I was checking out even handed me a complimentary swirly date cookie (tanks!). There is plenty of seating available, though I think most customers take their purchases to go. I departed carrying a hefty bag filled with goodies, the best of which was a gyro-like meat filled bread (so fluffy and just yum!), and crunchy, buttery "birds nest" cookie, though everything was at least good. The prices are reasonable at a dollar or two for most bakery items, and a couple more for the hummus and such. I will return to try many more delectable baked treats. read more

This was a great find. The highlight here is definitely the variety of tasty baklava (and kunafa, for those who know the difference; I don't). It was hard to rack up the bill at this place; $8.48 bought me a shwarma and a tasty assortment of Middle-Eastern desserts. The shwarma was good but not life-changing, although if your budget is limited to the change you found between your couch cushions, it's the best food you'll find in the Salt Lake Valley. The pastries are legendary. The accompanying market is packed with Middle-Eastern candies (and also has raw honey straight from the hive). Friendly service and rock-bottom prices. I was staying at a AirbNb down the street and noticed the bakery as soon as we turned on the street. When it was time for dinner, we decided to try it. We got there at 730 pm and was afraid it was going to be closed. It wasn't!! :). Most of the pastries were sold out so we ordered three of the savory pastries that were left. Forgive me but I didn't not get the names of them. Hopefully the photo may help. One was a gyro. The second was a pillowy turnover-type pastry filled with spinach and cheese. This one was my favorite!! Lastly, we ordered the round flat bread with hot peppers. It was not hot at all. It resembled a sweet red pepper in taste. To accompany these pastries, we ordered a small tub of hummus. All and all, delicious and very affordable. None was more that $2.50 each. The gentleman behind the counter was very friendly and didn't mind the many questions from me. Bonus points for the customer service. This is a real gem! Understated and delicious are the best ways to describe Karim Bakery. We come here often, seeing that my boyfriend is Arab and I also love Middle Eastern sweets. The little market area has a great selection of imported candies that we can't find anywhere else in Utah, but really enjoy. There are other items in the market to aid in whipping up a number of Middle Eastern dishes, and the family who owns and runs the shop are happy to help you figure what you may need to make a dish. The real gem is the bakery. The baklawa here is amazing. Ask though to make sure that it is fresh that day because baklawa naturally dries a lot if it sits out or is in the cold. Better than the baklawa? Kunafeh! Now this is something that needs to be special ordered, but is my very favorite Middle Eastern sweet. It is a combination of shredded filo dough, honey, cheese, and pistachios. OMG- it is so good, and totally worth special ordering it from here. We order it during Eid-an Islamic holiday of feasting and celebrating after the fasting month of Ramadan, and it's always a hit. read more

Best baklava in the state! Blink and you might miss this place but it's definitely worth a stop. A very simple bakery with lots of bake shop goods and a section selling international goodies. Karim was trying to set up his new TV when we walked in and enlisted the tech-savvy boyfriend to help. Then showed us the back of the house and gave us a tour of the "factory", the huge machinery, his operations, and how his dough is made, literally and figuratively. We got all three kinds of baklava- the original pistachio baklava, custard filled baklava, and the walnut baklava. My favorite still has to be the OG pistachio, it is seriously perfection. The walnut and custard were refreshingly different, I would definitely get them again. He makes breads that's used in a sandwich, you can also take a bunch home, and sells at local grocery stores like Ream's. It's truly a great little local business that worth supporting. read more

I had a 10 hour day at work and afterwards put in a couple hours to phone bank with the ACLU on getting support for Prop 4 to end the stupid gerrymandering methods in Utah. It was dinner time and I was working my way home with a hunger growling in my belly. I was driving through the part of town where I mentally bookmarked a bakery that advertised pics of what I would call lahmajune manahish and borek (not sure what they call it here) and thought I'd pop in to check it out. I walk in to a quiet and empty bakery and was greeted by Karim who came to the counter from the back. I asked a few questions and Karim initially showed me more of the sweet goods thinking I'd probably be interested in the baklava and desserts. He perked up when I asked about the Zaatar and lahmajune. Not a lot of people in these parts are familiar with those foods and he started inquiring how I know about them. I told him about how I grew up in Southern California and had lots of friends who lived near Glendale. I didn't need to say anymore. Glendale was the magic word. Haha, it explained all. I didn't get to ask specifically what part of the world Karim was from so I can't say if the pastries here are from the same land that the Kardashian hail from. I perused their offerings and saw some cold limp baked goods in the case. I inquired if I could place an order for something to be freshly made and Karim told me that 2pm was around the time that they finished baking for the day. In seeing my disappointed face he kindly offered that I could call in and he could reserve things for me before it was gone. Good to know! From the sad looking case I picked out a zataar, a cheese and olive, and a spinach borek and was really bummed they didn't have anymore lahmajune. Karim packed it up and asked if I wanted it heated up. I asked him how he was going to heat it up and he said microwave. I laughed. I said I'll take it home and just pop it in our microwave so it'd be warm and toasty when I was ready to eat. He instructed 30-45 seconds. Before I left an African American gentleman came in and apparently he was a regular as they greeted him warmly and promptly brought out the tray of his favorite dessert. It looked like a simple semolina and honey bar. I inquired about the big honey jars and Karim said they were from bees in his backyard. He offered me a spoon so I could sample from the frame that he pulled from his hive and had displayed in the store. My spoon swiped through fresh golden honeycomb. The honey was delicious but not quite as tasty as the local honey I had from the beehives at the main library. I probably would have purchased a jar of honey from Karim if I hadn't purchased local honey from Costco a few days prior and didn't already have a glut of honey at home. In my review earlier I described the middle eastern savory breads as cold, limp and sad and normally I'm a lot nicer in my reviews and wouldn't describe things as such but in this case i wanted to keep it real. Keep your expectations low people because when you take a bite of these cold limp things your mind will be blown! As I was driving home I couldn't resist sneaking bites of each bread. Bite after bite I was pleasantly surprised. "Is that mint I'm tasting with the cheese? That taste was delightfully unexpected and refreshing! What is in this unfamiliar flavor in the spinach borek? Are those pickled onions n beets? This zaatar has an amazing sourness to it...wonder if it's sumac..this food is so legit!" Can you tell how excited I am to have discovered this little bakery. I can't wait to come in early in the morning and get the middle eastern breads hot out of the oven. I can't wait to come back and try the lahmajune and to sample that semolina dessert. I found this place when I was searching my name while I was bored at my hotel in Northern Salt Lake City. I figured I'd come check it out since it has the same name as me. I have since returned to this place every time I am in Salt Lake City. The owner, Karim, and his wife are super nice and friendly! Every time I have visited I have talked with Karim for an hour and always wished I had more time! They are a wonderful couple and take pride in their bakery. Their baked goods have always been fresh. My wife always makes sure that I buy some of their baklava to bring back to Wyoming. Their prices on everything are reasonable and it is nice to find a small bakery like this in Utah. I highly recommend coming down to this place to get some amazing baked goods. I will return to this place every time I come back to Salt Lake City. Absolutely loved stopping by this bakery. The staff is incredibly friendly and you can taste the freshness in all their food. I love family restaurants like these because they make you feel as though you are part of the family here. I've ordered almost everything available here. The sfihas are delicious. The dough is light and fluffy, yet filling. The stuffing is creamy and well seasoned, yet not nauseating. You can taste in all of the food that it is home-made and fresh. The price of the food is also incredibly inexpensive. For 30 dollars we bought enough food for 4 people to have for lunch. We went for knafeh and discovered the hummus. Karim Bakery has absolutely the best hummus we've had outside of the Middle East. It's really, really, good!!! For our dinner we sampled almost every savory pastry in the shop--meat filled, spinach filled, cheese filled, the zatar bread--and all were terrific. Knafeh for dessert topped it off! Update: stance writing this review, I discovered that I am allergic to garlic. I visited the bakery to discuss garlic free options. Karim sat down with me at a table and discussed garlic free options, as well as offered to make me a special batch without garlic. This is hands down the best food service I have ever received. We had a huge take out order for a work luncheon. The food was absolutely delicious! There was so much to choose from, and not one single option disappointed! I haven't been to the bakery itself, but we had 5-6 different savory pastries, several different sauces, and a delicious dessert. Our administrative assistant said everyone working in the bakery was so kind gracious and filled her up with yummy samples while she waited. Can't wait to take my family! read more

Omgosh, what can I say about this place except their savory pastries are the real thing. So delicious, I buy boxes of various of these weekly to bring to clients. Their Zatar is my favorite and people really dig the cheese tart, the swarma and the spinach tart. The pricing is unbelievable for the quality of the food. I had my husband being me falafel. I make homemade falafel I know how it's stored m supposed to taste. This was a falafel mix which would have been fine but it was spongy and dry. It was 5.00 came with no bread and the salad it vane with was just wilted old lettuce. I like the za'atar but the chicken had way too much curry it was gritty. The falafel though was awful and inedible. I seriously threw it away. It wasn't fried I think they baked it. Noi flavor at all I think they added flour to it. It doubles as a middle eastern grocery and features some great priced and hard to find ingredients. If you love experimenting with international recipes, Karim is the place to go.
