Dental care is very stressful for me because I had a lot (too much) work done as a kid and moving my teeth so much caused gum recession, correcting that and protecting my teeth is very important but also very expensive. I only recently obtained dental insurance after being in school and I went to Dr. Roman's office. The staff at this office are very professional and patient- I got all of my questions answered. I had a dental implant put in with anesthesia, which I had a lot of anxiety. Dr. Roman was very gentle, and even sang while she was finding a vein for the needle! I just felt that I was in wonderful and experienced hands with her! I had little pain with my dental procedure, and after care. I would recommend her wholeheartedly! I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Roman and her staff. I have been going to her ever since she purchased the practice of another periodontist ("he whose name shall not be mentioned"). Her predecessor was such that I drove five hours one way to use a peer in the Bay Area...enough said. My existing dentist (Dr. Omey) has me in for visits twice a year and Dr. Roman sees me twice as well. From the very beginning, Dr. Roman and her staff have been the Gold Standard for patient care. Since they moved into newer quarters, the ambiance has been top notch as well. Last week I was there for my scheduled visit and each bay had the window open. Now it was 42 degrees outside and I was concerned. But they swaddled me in blankets and the fresh air not only eased my COVID concerns but the outside air flow put me in a meditative state. Cassandra, my favorite hygienist, has not only top notch dental skills but a personality second to none. I have lived all over the world and have never had a better team. My husband received dental work by Dr. Roman and her staff as part of getting three implants. She and her staff were professional, caring and made the entire experience as "pleasant" as a dental visit can be. He was dreading the procedures and still talks about what a positive experience it was. I have recently had "deep root cleanings" there and also found Dr. Roman, her staff and the office environment to be exceptional. My husband was a patient of Dr. Roman's for approximately three years and never missed an appointment. When we changed primary dentists, our new provider said he no longer needed to see Dr. Roman. Our new provider called to request his records, and told Dr. Roman's staff my husband would no longer be seen by Dr. Roman. Three months later we received a bill for a missed appointment. When I called and spoke to the Office Manager (Alyssa), she said they called our house to confirm the appointment. We never got that call and Alyssa insisted I pay the $75 missed appointment charge. Ouch! Wonder how long we doubled up my husband's cleaning appointments with no need? Hmmm..... knowledge is power, so thought I'd share. read more

I've seen periodontitis for over 20 years. After moving here I found myself in Dr. Roman's care. Basically she it's the only one who specializes in periodontal care. My visits are useless, she doesn't do anything. She recommends that one come in and all that is done is a teeth cleaning which is very expensive compared to ones dentist. She doesn't bother to come in and see me during the visit. The few times that she has bothered to come in, she looks in my mouth and just says "humm". That's the visit. Dr. Román was very nice and so were her staff. The reason for the 3 stars is this... the after care sucked. I had a gum graft done. 1 week later I went for a check-up. I explained that one of the stitches was catching on my lip every time I talked and I couldn't wait to get them out. She trimmed the stitch and said they had to remain for another 1 1/2 weeks. Three days later I couldn't take it any more. The stitch she had trimmed was constantly stabbing the inside of my cheek and lip. It had created a couple of wounds that made it painful to talk, eat, and even sleep. I called Dr. Román's office on the 4th day and was told that she was on vacation and had a protocol that had to be followed. I begged them to do something as I was on the verge of removing the stitches myself. It hurt that bad. Her assistant had me come in and looked at it. She called another dentist office for advice and then told me I was just going to have to deal with it for another week. She recommended some cancer sore patches to cover the wounds. I understand that everyone deserves to take a vacation. But that's why you have a backup. I'm not a doctor or anything, but I don't take any time off unless I know my job is 100% covered. If I had known she would not be around to provide after care, I would have postponed my procedure or not done it at all. At the moment, I am not happy with the way the graft looks. I think my gums looked better before. But I understand I am still healing and it will most likely look better given time. My complaints are not about her abilities. She is a wonderful and friendly doctor and her staff is equally as friendly. My complaints are strictly because of the after care. read more

I was to receive two implants at this office and left to have the process finished by another periodontist. I would not recommend this office for the following reasons: 1. Communication between the doctor/office is very poor. 2. Little guidance as to what to expect. 3. No after procedure check up call from the office. I developed huge canker sores and was not warned that this could happen. I was not prepared for aftermath at all, no write up, no words explaining that my tongue had been badly bruised in the procedure and what recuperative help would be available afterwards. 4. Doctor Roman went on maternity leave without informing me there would me months delay in the process. I did not even know she had left when my xray was ready to be read in order to decide if my jaw was ready for implants, I was told she would not be back for weeks to even read the xray! 5. I was not guided at all as far as next appointments were concerced, I had to think of all the next steps myself. 6. On Sept 5, 2014 I requested my xray and file to be transferred to another periodontist office, as of Sept 22 this had not happened yet. I find the office staff "coldly polite and coldly pleasant", 2 implants were going to cost $6,250, for that amount of money one should expect much better customer service! I can't even rate Dr. Schonfeld I needed a gum graph done on a couple of teeth and I went in for my consultation. I thought ok, he is awkward, maybe this is just a periodontists thing so i stuck with him anyway. I had the surgery done... $1000 later my gum is back to where it was. So what do I do? Ask my dentist to look at it, he says "was this guy who did this a periodontists?" ..... um yes? So I went in for another check up to ask more about the repeated recession of my gum, and Dr SChonfeld was extremely rude. Horrible! HORIBBLE HORIBBLE!!! I do not recommend Dr. Schonfeld for your periodontal needs. I had a frenectomy and gum grafting surgery at his office. He has a horrible bed side manner and a condescending attitude. When I winced during my surgery, he asked if I was in pain and when I said "not too much," he told me to only whine when I mean it. When I nearly lost it during gum grafting surgery (due to the intensity of what they were doing to my mouth), he was of no consolation. If it hadn't been for his assistant, I don't know what I would have done. After the surgery, I was told, "We should have sedated you." Great, why didn't they tell me about the option to be sedated PRIOR to surgery? When I returned to Dr. Schonfeld's office one week later, I mentioned my frustration about not being informed about possibly being sedated. The receptionist stared at me with a blank face. Dr. Schonfeld said "85% of patients who undergo this procedure are not sedated." Well, maybe that is because your system for informing people about sedation is not working. On another note, the receptionists are rude (or they were rude to me at least.) I was 10 minutes late for my follow up appointment. Upon entering the office, I said, "I'm so sorry I am late." Sandy, one of the receptionists, stared at me, grabbed my chart, handed it to an aid, and did not say a word to me. Apparently being late at Dr. Schonfeld's office denies you the right to be treated with respect and common human decency. I was actually also five minutes late to my surgery appointment as well (I know, it's annoying on my part to be late, but I still deserve some respect and decent customer service). When I checked in for the surgery, I also apologized for running late and was met with similar rudeness from the other receptionist (she did not speak to me and gave me an unfriendly look). IF YOU NEED PERIODONTAL SURGERY IN HUMBOLDT, GO TO SF OR SACRAMENTO OR ANYWHERE ELSE! Dealing with rude people makes invasive gum surgery that much worse. FYI- they peeled back the roof of my mouth, ripped out some tissue, and sewed that tissue into my bottom front gum line. Wouldn't you want to be sedated for that? Or at least told that it was an option? Would you want someone to tell you to only whine when you mean it during this surgery? I have never felt compelled to write a negative review of any customer service experience I have had until now. read more
