This review is strictly based on the coffee. I just bought 2 bags (Ethiopian Sidamo and Mexican) of whole bean from a local whole foods. Both bags were roasted in the last month. I just spent $30 for 24 oz. of oily and burnt beans. Over roasted beans are typically covering something up which must be what happens here. The Mexican in particular is described as a mellow "all day drinking" joe. The roasting seems similar to a Starbucks roast across the board but your price point is closer to small batch roasters. Far from mellow! I'll just stick with George Howell or Rao's. Their descriptions are accurate. read more

I'm from Philadelphia, but my girlfriend is from the area. After a few trips up to New England (including Boston) I pretty much just wrote off New Englanders as having bad taste in coffee. That is, until I came to Karma Coffee. I didn't stick around the store long since we're just driving through the area, but they apparently roast and grind their own beans, which is pretty great. I got the Harrar cold brew. It has delicious notes of nuts and milk chocolate. After tasting it, even my girlfriend didn't put milk or sugar in. It's definitely the best coffee I've had in New England. read more

I am all for small batch roasters. It's great that this business exists and seems to be thriving. While it took about 20 minutes to drive there during my lunch hour today, it was well worth the trip. The baristas were very friendly, and based on their interactions with the other customers in addition to my own interactions with them, they were very approachable as well. They run a good operation and they know what they are doing with the roasting. My latte was good. The art was nice (always a good start) but the drink was way too hot. My tongue is still tender. The flavor from the espresso was fresh, but lacked some of the fullness of taste that a few other roasters are able to achieve. All-in-all, it's a really nice place that I will go back to. It's a great stop if you're in the area. If you're having trouble finding it, it is behind what I believe was a Papa Gino's Pizza on route 20. read more

Just had a GREAT cup of coffee in this cool coffee shop in Sudbury off Route 20. Karma Coffee Roasters is what a coffee shop used to be before Starbucks. The guys were really friendly, the place was excellent and stylish and the coffee was amazing. They do the full range of expresso's and cap's. They roast the beans(many types) right there and sell whole bean and ground, and they have decaf. The place is funky and spotless. David is the owner and his assistant is Isaac, both nice guys. WOW. This is the kind of cafe that makes you want to own a cafe, not because you think you can do better, but because Karma sets a standard one could aspire to. The coffee is spectacular. Why four stars? I want more bakery and maybe some breakfast food. I don't really like Dunkies because the coffee and the food feels and tastes "corporate", but they have the right mix of things available for the "breakfast on the go". Great, friendly service, nice ambiance, easy parking. The location, as others have noted, is a little hidden, probably because they needed a fairly large space for the roasting, but if you find it, you win! read more

My coworkers always make the Karma Coffee run, but today it was my turn. The shop is tucked away behind Papa Gino's on RT 20 in Sudbury. It's near a dance studio so parking was jammed. I walked into the toasty warm shop and all I could do was smile. Unlike a few of my favorite coffee shops (Atomic and Jaho) the tables and chairs were clean and in good condition. Upholstered in earthy orange, red and chocolate brown the atmosphere was inviting. This is without taking into consideration the delicious smell of freshly roasted coffee wafting from the backroom. The roaster is visible in the back and bags of green beans are stacked nearby. I've had their fresh roasted coffee before, as you can buy their awesome beans at Whole Foods, I knew I was in for a treat getting something brewed even more freshly than what I had taken home. Service was a little slow, but considering that there was a line of people to get their afternoon pick-me-up, it was not surprising. Service was friendly and efficient but not earth shattering. Given the time I waited in line I was able to peruse their offerings at length and change my order a hundred times in my head all before I ever reached the register; iced or hot, my usual Americano or something different. Knowing that my office's temp would peak in the 80's I opted for an iced coffee, and I went cold brew, since they had cold brewed Mexican on tap. I ordered my coworkers their brews and with my pocket a mere $7 lighter I went back to work a happy camper. The cold brew Mexican was smooth with a pleasingly rich finish. I could add a bunch of adjectives about acidity, mocha, and other such things but instead I'll just say that the cold brew was perfectly balanced and didn't have that old coffee taste that so many iced coffees are burdened with. The only fault I can find with Karma? It's roughly a 45 minute to 1 hour drive from home and I just quit the job that led me to be nearby every day of the week. Sadly, Karma will be relegated to a "if I'm in the area" treat. read more

After living in LA for a tad over a year, I moved back craving a good cup of coffee. Before leaving MA for the land of eternal sunshine, I thought all coffee tasted sort of burnt and bitter. Needless to say, I came back a changed woman. I learned coffee had actual flavors besides "oh my god it's so bitter it burns it burns just get through it", wasn't supposed to scald you in the first half hour you tried to take a sip, and could even be brewed COLD. I finally went into Karma Coffee Roasters today and ordered a latte with skim milk. I was preparing myself to be disappointed when the barista handed over my beautifully poured latte. Hooray latte art! Even better, my drink was incredible! It was the right temperature, had no bitter or burnt notes, and I could again feel like a bougie intellectual and taste actual notes of nuts and caramel in my espresso. The time it took to get my drink and the price were both good. The pour overs are also inexpensive, so I'll be sure to try one in the near future. I've been missing a good cold brew, though, so that will probably be my next order. I've docked a star because 1. It took me about two months to figure out the correct entrance to the place and 2. because it's only open until two pm. Come on people! At least extend your hours on Saturday or something! It seems like it would be a great hang out. I also didn't hear any music inside, and I love me some music. Their coffee is just too good to not come back. You'll be seeing me again, Karma! First off, the address listed above may be Karma's real address, but Google Maps has no idea how to find it. If you look up 33 Old Count Sudbury, MA 01776, you'll get exactly where it is. Karma serves some of the better coffee I've found in the Boston area. They also have great pastries from B&R Artisan Bread in Framingham (http://www.yelp.com/biz/b-and-r-artisan-bread-framingham). There aren't many places to sit, and it can get busy there, but if you can get a spot you can while away the morning with free wifi and a pleasant atmosphere. They roast their own in a 60-ish pound barrel roaster. They are encouraging of people to watch the roasting process and seem happy to talk you through what they are doing. Though don't be put off if they ignore you all of a sudden as not paying attention to hot, oily things tends to cause fires. I've brought home their beans, but wasn't all that impressed. The in-house stuff is fine, but after talking with their roaster I get the impression they are less scientific (read: repeatable process) about their roasting and tend to eyeball a lot. Which, to be fair, is part of the roasting process. Then again, I used to roast commercially so my point of view is that of a coffee snob. They didn't wow me but it's a good place for coffee that's local and you can tell they love coffee. They don't just put on green aprons and serve it. read more

Obsessed. I have gone three times in the past week. And that's saying something since it is a 40-minute drive there and back from my house. I am constantly in search of a new cafe to explore and this place is certainly my new favorite hidden gem. I can only speak for their straight-up coffee (pour-over and cold-brew) since I have not tried any of their espresso drinks. But I can say that I have officially found my favorite cup o' joe in the Northeast. The roast is perfect- rich and bold, but definitely not bitter/burnt. I ALWAYS put at least a little milk in my coffee, but this liquid gold is so darn good I have been able to drink it sans milk. GO KARMA! The staff is always very friendly and helpful. The cold brew is some of the best I've ever had AND they have multiple types to choose from which is kind of mind blowing. That being said, the barista was straight up rude to my MIL. She asked for a tray to carry our drinks out at the beginning of the conversation, mentioned it again at the end (in no way in a rude way) and the barista snapped "I've only got two hands." My MIL apologized to him (which, why are we the ones apologizing to the staff????) and he just kind of nodded. Long story short, if the service had been more pleasant, this would have been a 5 star experience. read more

When I ponder the meaning of life and think about what I would sacrifice, I realize that I'm very close to saying that I would give up sex for Karma coffee. It's THAT good. And it's always that good. Great place to get coffee. I have had several cappuccino's and they are all consistently really good. I have also had their iced coffee which was refreshing on a hot day. This is the best place to get coffee unless you want to go into Boston. They roast coffee on site, there are many choices, and the prices are not that expensive. I highly recommend getting the chocolate covered coffee beans while you're there. read more

I come here like every day because I live down the road. The coffee is amazing and the prices are competitive. Basically just doing drip coffee nowadays or espresso shots (or both combined...wahoo!) because I'm on an unemployed girl budget, but even the drip coffee is better than any fancy schmancy drink at Starbucks. This place is awesome. It will stupefy your palate with excellence. Definitely stop by, but if you're coming at around 9AM be prepared to wait in line. These guys rock at coffee. They don't pretend to do anything other than deliver a great coffee experience. They really know their craft. Fantasic espresso drinks. Fantastic brewed coffee. Fantastic beans to bring home. I've been to sitelgass in the Bay Area, Intelligentisia in Cali....and a number of shops in Portland Oregon, Seattle, etc. These guys have what those other companies have lost. read more

I've bought coffee beans here several times, and it's always a pleasant experience. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about coffee and always happy to answer questions about their roasts and offer suggestions and samples. It's not cheap coffee but it's always fresh and they offer a lot of types of bean I've never tried, and actually the price per pound is probably pretty comparable to what you'd pay at Starbucks, though infinitely fresher (when was the last time you bought Starbucks beans that were roasted that week, or even that month!). The shop environment has gotten to be quite cozy, and is decorated with art, and modern furniture, and there is usually some cool music playing. This is a great local shop that I love to support whenever I can. read more

After Cafe Kafofo in cambridge closed, has been very limited to find a nice environment with a perfect cappuccino or late. Today I was in Belmont and decided to google for a good late and I got in the first top Karma Coffee Roaster and I am so glad I stopped by, because they make a way perfect LATTE. Limited selection of non-coffee items, but I can't fault them for that since that's their speciality. Really friendly service, and overall a very pleasant experience. The atmosphere is cozy--complete with couches, tables and chairs, and a few stools. I got a slice of lemon almond bread. Pretty heavenly for gluten free. I like this joint. I live closer to both starbucks and dunks. Actually driving to Karma seems like an eternity because I have to take Rt 20...but I still go. I wish they were open Sundays, but such is life. Coffee is good and very reasonably priced. It's cheaper than starf*cks. The baristas are always nice. Get the oats cookies, they're expensive but tasty. And also be ready to take your drink to go, I've been here dozens of times and there's never anywhere to sit. I've been to Karma a few times now after a coworker introduced me to them. While I have not had too many of the menu options, their vanilla lattes have been really good. I don't find their prices unreasonable, and think the quality is worth it. My only complaint, besides the short open hours, is that they've been really slow each time. I would love to stop in more but honestly, would need to budget a solid half an hour to come in, especially when it's busy. I, unfortunately, don't have that time. read more

As others here have noted, most coffee available around here is either very dark or very lightly roasted. For those who like a full-bodied flavour, with rich fragrance and complexity on the palate, there aren't a lot of options. None, in fact, that I found for many years. Was recently taken to Karma by a special friends, and was quite taken by both the enthusiasm and the obviously deep knowledge of the owner. Sampled several brews; all were very good, and a couple outstanding. Bought three types of bean to take home and brew my own way. Result: this is easily the best coffee I've tasted for many years, even in fancy restaurants or from much more expensive, famous and pretentious vendors. Well worth a bit of a drive; I won't be buying anywhere else as long as they stay that far ahead. What a pleasure to find this kind of attention to hand-produced quality. read more

I'm embarrassed to admit but I used to only drink Dunkin's coffee with milk and then slowly I converted to Starbucks with creme and now I will only drink Karma coffee BLACK - the way coffee is supposed to be enjoyed. I used to drive by Karma all time time but I thought that they were strictly wholesalers UNTIL I tried their coffee at the Wayland Winter Farmer's Market - I became hooked, addicted, obsessed and a convert. The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable and will help you pick out a roast to your liking - they want happy customers and will go out of their way to help you. The one thing that is a bummer is that they are only open until 2:00PM and not open on Sundays so make sure to bring some beans home with you! They are tucked away off Route 20 in Sudbury behind Pap Ginos - look for the orange sign with the elephant balancing on a coffee bean! Oh and make sure to try a Cold Brew Iced Coffee - my summer days aren't complete without one! read more

4 stars for their espresso drinks, 2 stars for their roasted coffee = 3 total. They really do have the best espresso drinks in the area. In quite a wide area, actually. Every now and then, you'll get one that's just kind of whipped off quickly, *bucks-style, sure. But, most of the time, the baristas take their time and do a pretty great job. I just wish they wouldn't roast the living crap out of their beans. I know, I know, the dark heart of America demands a dark roasted coffee. But, there is just not a lot of character left in the beans by the time they're done with it. There's no reason to pay these prices for beans that are well past French roast territory. They've got origin labels and tasting notes on everything, but it doesn't make a bit of difference when the roast is that dark and oily. read more

Truly a gem. It is in Sudbury's version of an alley hidden behind a Papa Gino's. The outside looks better suited for light manufacturing or distribution than a upscale food shop. Inside is what you would expect with a contemporary coffee. It is clean, modern and minimalist with a casual urban touch. Seeing coffee roasting equipment and the bustle of the roasters working makes going there an exciting and unique visit. Clearly Karma is a roaster first, and the shop is a business they are expanding into. Food and other drink options are more than a bit limited. Hopefully they can expand their offerings for people to have more reasons to come. The service was fast and cordial, but not noteworthy. There was no attempt to make a connection with the customer, or enhance the experience beyond serving the customer what they ask. read more
