Change can be hard. When we learned that Acton Coffee House was sold and that changes were going to be made, we were skeptical. After all, what was wrong with the old format? Chris & Meredith, the new owners had big ideas. They excitedly mentioned some of the changes that they'd planned, including the new seating arrangements. Could that possibly work for our often crowded daily morning group? We weren't sure. But Chris has been accommodating and solicitous, and assured us that he'd make it work for us ~~ And he has. In addition, new yummy food offerings are now available; bagels & lox, avocado toast, yogurt parfaits, and overnight oats. (My husband's favorite) As before, the barristas are friendly, competent, and cheerful. The only change that disappoints me (and this is minor), is the placement of the baked goods. I used to derive great pleasure in watching the young children walk up to the pastry window at their eye level, as they would choose their favorite treat. It was a good place to work remotely, as they had a decent amount of seating available at 8:30AM on a Wednesday (though it did get a lot busier when I left at noon). I ordered the "Bee's Knees" latte (iced, medium with almond milk) for $9, and I'd rate it a 3.5/5 for taste. I also tried the avocado toast and was delightfully surprised. Service was slow. Having to wait to order my large dark roast while tons of specialty drinks were made was frustrating. The women behind the counter did the best they could, but were overwhelmed with all the specialty drinks. The coffee is good. It doesn't stand out especially, when compared to other coffee house dark roasts. I asked for a large dark roast and was surprised by the size of the cup. It was not a large cup and is more expensive than others that have a legitimate large cup. I checked and I got the largest cup available. Decent coffee, but room to improve in other areas. Nice people, they seem to work well together as a team. The place has a great layout, and is comfortable. Decent parking, a much better choice than Starbucks or Duncan. Great choices for healthy drinks, food is expensive except the bagels are a great deal. I really liked their espresso (roasted under their own label), which was smooth and full-bodied. They had a bunch of delicious-looking pastries and most importantly, a significant amount of gluten free options. The oat muffin was so delicious, I definitely inhaled an oat or two. With lots of natural light and a calm vibe, it's a great place for working or very quiet conversation. There are some rules, like no more than 3 chairs at each table. So if you have more than 3 people and adjacent tables are not an option, maybe laps are the next best option lol. Thankfully, we only had 3 people and Acton Coffee House was a lovely spot for us to convene! Will absolutely be here again if we're in the area--thank you! read more

I am obsessed. ACH is seriously the best coffee in the area. If you like espresso drinks this is your place. They make the creamiest latte you'll ever have that is not too sweet but yet flavorful. Nice atmosphere, great coffee and great pastries. Service is slow sometime painfully. I remember the days of "espresso" drinks were fast and foaming with the expectation of making a train. Now seems the wait is a result of the "intentionality of the pour" or the experience of the "crafting" of a $6.00 latte. It seems strange that 32 years ago I was a barista with green hair making four lattes at once with a line out the door in Harvard Sq' s epic Coffee Connection. I've attempted to stop in many times but have never been able to find a seat so I've left. Finally got a seat the other day so stayed. Tables are really small. Barely enough room for my laptop, notebook and coffee. The iced coffee was ok. On the weak side. And they make you put your own cream and sugar in. If you want almond milk or coconut milk, you have to wait at the counter for them to bring you the milk, then you have to go to a separate counter to get your sugar. They have a sign up putting you on a guilt trip for using a straw. read more

Coming from Seattle and having a very picky coffee palate I find the Acton Coffee House pretty good. I appreciate it in the suburbs you have to serve a wider variety of clientele than in a city center, so I understand the smoothies and other items on their drink menu, but this lack of coffee-focus makes the coffee offering a little lacking. Espresso grinding, distribution, tamping and pulls are messy and sloppy and have a wide variety of quality; I noted the other day that my espresso grind in the portafilter was actually never even tamped down. My expectations are, I know, stupid high. But if you're going to be offering pour over, single origin coffee and highly complex espresso drinks you need to be able to bring the goods. Staff is friendly, but in most cases poorly trained in the art of espresso drink making. I will say though, with a little more focus from ownership and management as well as better on boarding and training, most of this can be fixed. In addition, other fixes I would implement would be to source beans from a different location as the beans you are selling are not in vacuum sealed bags and are stale. Perhaps partner with a local Roastery like George Howell, or atomic coffee and use as well as sell their beans instead. Finally the ambience is very nice, it's a chill relaxed environment and the outdoor seating on warm days is wonderful. I will continue to enjoy my experiences here, but I'll be sticking to pour overs or brewed coffee for new. NB: this review was dictated, there are probably typos. read more

I wanted to like Acton Coffee House so badly, especially after I read all of the positive reviews. We stopped in for breakfast and I left hungry and disappointed. I ordered an iced vanilla latte. The coffee was super bitter and I think they forgot to add vanilla. That being said, the base latte wasn't great and isn't something that I'd order again. We also got the last two pastries in the case. $6 gluten free muffins. Not only is the price something to choke on, the muffins were bland and both dry and oily at the same time. I couldn't finish mine. Maybe we caught them on an off day, but this isn't a place that I am eager to try again. read more

Waited a minute or so for the barista to finish their conversation with a friend at the counter before finally addressing me, only to let me know I couldn't order a coffee to go because I had my 8lb mini daschund in my over the shoulder pouch. Just kind of odd for a dog friendly town and a bummer since it seems to be the only non-chain coffee place in Acton, and there is outdoor seating. Seems like a lot of similar disappointing experiences based on reviews. Thought he asked me to not pass him cash, while he put gloves on. Almost 5 dollar cup of horrible coffee. Stale, and burnt tasting, that they seem to try and cover up with making it strong. I really wanted to like this place but I've been twice and was disappointed each time. One server in particular was extremely rude to me and other guests. I understand enforcement of Covid rules and abide by them but to get yelled at because I took a step off of a dot on the ground is a bit much. I wasn't near anyone I took a step to the side to read part of the menu and the server stopped taking someone else's order to yell for me to stand on the dot. It was just excessive. The drinks were extremely bitter despite asking for sweetener and so so over priced it was absurd. This is on my commute to work so I checked it out as a place to get a second cup of coffee and a second breakfast or a snack to take to work. I ordered a small coffee, an apple walnut muffin, and a chocolate croissant. The coffee was quite good. I asked what they used for coffee. She said Deans Beans, which I know is great coffee and a responsible company and also charges less per bag then just about everyone. So why was my small cup $1.90, solidly on the high side for a small cup in these parts, even at small boutique places? The muffin was average at best, probably slightly below. Fine textured, crumbly, no body, on the sweet side, somewhat oily, and definitely too big for a muffin. Another example of out-of-control portion wars in the restaurant world. This could well have equalled two muffins 30 years ago! Price $2.50; about right. The chocolate croissant was pretty bad. Maybe if you called it something else. But not a croissant. None of the layered flakiness expected, or any hint of buttery flavor. Kind of soggy, chewy. At least it had chocolate; I don't think I could have finished it if it was plain. I asked about the pastries. She said they source them from local bakeries, including two whose names I recognized: Nashoba Brook and Iggy's. Well, based on my experience that day, those companies must not be sending along their best efforts to Acton Coffee House. Can't comment on ambience, wifi etc. I came here for to-go. Ok. scoring. 4 stars for coffee taste, -1 for the high price, 2 stars for the muffin, 1 for the croissant. This makes 2 stars. Add 1 star for the barista, who was efficient, friendly, and answered all my several questions competently and honestly. Subtract 1 star because they have absolutely no chocolate on the menu except the croissant. Final total: 2 stars. read more

This is based on a visit in Feb 2020, pre-COVID shutdown. I want to give a zero star because THERE ARE NEVER ANY TABLES AVAILABLE here. The last straw was when I drove 45 mins to meet a friend who lived an hour away in another direction. Based on the reviews (and that she's a coffee lover) we thought this would be a great place to enjoy together. But no, no, no. Every table was occupied with 1 person and his/her laptop. I arrived early in case we needed to wait for a table but all the waiting was useless. These ~6 customers were camped out for the day. No one ever left. We gave up and went next door to the tried-and-true restaurant/bar named True West. I noticed other reviews said the same thing. Maybe the owners might want to consider finding a way to consolidate the computer people into shared tables? Or prioritize parties of more than 1 for table assignments? I can't imagine what's its like to keep a business viable if sales are limited to the same few customers who stay all day.... read more

This place is conveniently located to us so we come here often. Love both the interior and outdoor space of this place. The coffee quality is standard of a local coffee shop in my opinion- stronger than Dunkin, weaker than Starbucks. I find them to have very milky lattes that lack the espresso flavor. However, I've noticed this is the same with other coffee shops, so maybe I need to adjust my order. Their flavors are really good with lots of seasonal choices. They let you mix and match (e.g. marshmallow caramel is really good). Sometimes there is the right amount of syrup and sometimes it's slightly under syruped. I totally recommend this place, but maybe add a shot or extra syrup or both in your latte if you're not a fan of the milky kind. We haven't ordered anything but lattes so I can't comment on the rest of the menu. They have a lot of drink options. Note that food options are limited- some muffins and pastries. They do not do breakfast sandwiches which would be nice. read more

This establishment replaced Cafe Ziba which (for me) was notable due to the owners attention to the coffee & espresso service. You could tell that even the young high school folks working behind the counter had been trained up and seriously knew how to pull shots etc. Glad to say that the same thing applies to Acton Coffee House - fantastic espresso the last two times I've been in there. I went here with my dad for several years. I went there and got 2 drinks, and then tipped. The barista then said "what do you think you're doing?" To me. I was shocked. My sister stepped in and said "she was tipping you" and the barista said "oh ok." I got accused of stealing from a tip jar. I never got an apology for it and I've never been back since. read more
