I just made a special trip from Brooklyn to New Haven just so Katy could do my hair I've lived all over the place and gone to a bunch of salons that have really varied in how blonde they go with my hair... usually after 6 weeks there's a clear line of my roots through (let alone my hair will dry out or get frizzy from over-treating it). Somehow when I go to Katy this is all avoided (??) My hair looks very natural. Even as it grows out, it somehow blends. highly recommend! read more

This was an extremely overpriced ($80 before tip) haircut for what it was. I showed a reference video with a very curved bottom that came to a point in the middle. I clearly stated that I wanted the haircut to be very rounded and not straight across at the bottom. My hair was cut and then dried without the chance to look at the back. I was ushered out. When I got home, it turned out that the bottom was completely straight across, just with pieces that were shorter in the front. For what was a $100 haircut with tip, this is really not okay. My 2nd time at this salon today and I saw Nicole for a balayage and trim. And wow! I'm absolutely loving my new fresh hairdo! I showed her a picture off Pinterest of the balayage look that I was going for and she gave me exactly that, and actually better. She was super friendly and easy to talk to as well. I highly recommend her for any color or haircut services. That being said, it was my first color service at this salon and I have to say it was a bit more than what I have paid in the past for a balayage and toner. And I have always had medium shoulder length hair. I think the haircuts are pretty fairly priced. Nicole did an excellent job on my balayage so it was definitely worth it for me and I didn't regret spending that. But I'd recommend checking out their prices beforehand to make sure you're ok with it. read more

Being a new customer there isn't the way to go. Everyone who gives this place great comments are long time regulars. I had a hairstyle there that was completely frizzy. I had photos of everything I wanted. The stylist glanced at it and said she'd be fine. She used a tiny brush even though I suggested that she shouldn't. When it was done, the stylist insisted that it looked great. OMG, the Emperor's New Clothes much?! I felt like I was being gas lit. LOL. Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to get it redone. Anyone with integrity wouldn't have said it looked good. Stupid me, I paid what I owed and tipped. I don't want to single anyone out, but I can it was not the owner Sheryl. However, she wasn't much help in resolving the situation. Anyway, If you're a regular, you're probably fine here. If you're looking for a new salon, go somewhere else! read more

Sheril is amazing both with color and haircuts. I'm a brunette naturally but now a golden blond. It is very hard to lift hair but Sheril is a chemist and knows how to create the perfect hair color and look natural. I have been to salons in Greenwich and NYC and Sheril is the best. I live in the same building as Karma, and while I've never gotten a full-blown haircut, I did stop in for a bang trim one day. The girl who helped me was very friendly, and she took me as soon as I walked in. She asked me how I styled my bangs and how short I wanted them, and then proceeded to do a *cough* bang-up job. She was truly delightful, both skilled and super sunny. When I asked how much it would be, she said it was free, and that I should just tell my friends about the place. I tipped her, and here I am. I have a weird racist thing about hairdressers, where I've convinced myself that only Koreans and, in a pinch, other Asians know what to do with my hair. This girl was the first and only non-Asian to get near my hair with a pair of scissors, and I was happy with the results. While I don't know that I'll be going back for a full cut, I'm happy to give Karma a big thumbs up on Yelp. The staff is friendly and competent, and they give free bang trims to strangers. read more

I booked Karma Salon for my pre-rehearsal dinner blowout and for my wedding day hair and makeup. They were fantastic! It was hands down the best blowout I've ever had (especially considering that humidity always flattens my hair) and I loved the updo that I got for my wedding. I received many, many compliments. My mother also got her hair and makeup done at salon for the wedding day and really loved their work too. Also, a friend coming into town for the wedding popped into Karma for a last-minute haircut and even though they were closing up, they agreed to cut his hair for him after he mentioned that he was coming to my wedding! This is really two reviews. One great, one less great. First, I really like this place. I like the studio, I love Brooke, and I loved the haircut she gave me. And I think their prices are generally fair. If you are going for a regular shampoo/cut/blow dry/style I *do* recommend Karma. I also referred two friends there who have gone and loved their hair. Second, I likely won't go back now, at least for a while. I got a cool buzz cut that fits my style and the season, and I wanted to maintain it every 2-3 weeks or so, and maybe try some etching. Another detail is that I am allergic to most shampoos (including those used at Karma) and so I don't get shampooed when I get haircuts there or anywhere. When I inquired about whether the price would be different given these specifics, the owner Cheryl politely told me that it would still be $55. She said I could bring my own shampoo and that buzz cuts can take as long as regular haircuts. In my head I just thought "nope," but out loud I said "okay thanks I will find somewhere else then." I already have. It is $15 for a buzz cut at Hive in downtown, and even if they charge extra for etching or can't do etching, at least I will have a clean look throughout the summer. I'm not even mad, Karma has to charge what they have to charge -- and they are always busy -- but this policy does not fit my needs for now and I have to say I'm fairly put off by the inflexibility. read more

I usually get my hair cut and color done in Philadelphia but I decided to try Karma because of its convenient location and stellar reviews. SO glad I did because Nicole is AMAZING, bomb haircut and and BOMB AF color job! I usually get a bronzy balayage on my almost black hair, but decided to switch up to a chocolate mauve balayage this time. I met with Nicole 2 weeks prior to my full appointment and we went over my hair vision. On the big day the salon was kind enough to call me and tell me they were running a little late and to not rush in. I showed up and the next 2+ hours just blew me away. Nicole was so attentive and meticulous in her art...and when she started to blow dry my hair I couldn't wipe off the huge dopey grin on my face because I was FLOORED by the phenomenal job she did! Turned out even better than the pictures I showed her. She has such a talent for gauging what i wanted...something a little edgy but professional enough for a job in the hospital. The cut was perfect too...I really couldn't be happier. Will definitely be returning for as long as I'm in new haven! So much love for Karma, thanks for making my hair crazy awesome! read more

I read the prior reviews as to deliver some new & useful information about Karma, but realize that i just really need to do my job to reiterate and testify with my own story that Karma truly is a wonderful salon for so many reasons. In my experience, I have found a lack of outstanding customer service in New Haven, in the world at large for that matter! Well, you don't have to worry about that at Karma. The owner, Cheryl, is so involved in each customer and her team of stylists are as well. I have never been to a salon where everyone who works there is sunny, gracious & just down-to-earth. No pretentiousness here. Instead you are put at ease upon entering, to a very welcoming staff, a beverage and a hair experience that will leave you extremely satisfied. As for my personal story, I entered Karma today with about three different colors in my hair, feeling very pregnant, unkept & downright ugly. However, with Cheryl's incredible talent & expertise, I left feeling gorgeous- a perfectly natural, sun-kissed brunette, a look & experience that will keep me coming back again & again. My experience here has been very pleasant. For starters I want to comment on the customer service. They have little perks such as a hot beverage in a mug and a call a week later to find out if I'm still happy. Maybe this is how they do it in New Haven, but I've had my hair cut in Avon and Shelton and I've never find myself this comfy in a hair salon :) I love the decor and ambiance of the salon. It's not "spa-like" and more urban and eclectic. Finally, to the service itself. I had Nicole cut my hair and I noticed her skills are much better than the last salon I had visited. I am also Asian and I get nervous a bit with the way I get my hair cut and Nicole did a fab job with it. She took the time to tweak as well at the end to make sure everything looks perfect. This is my new favorite place in New Haven. I have been there 3 times for different services with 3 different stylist and have not been disappointed. Everyone that works there is super down to earth, friendly and incredibly fun to talk to. The atmosphere is totally laid back and I can guarantee that at some point while you are there you'll be sharing comical stories with the stylists and other clients. The salon itself is gorgeous with a retro feel that's not mod or trendy and the music is great. After your first visit you're going to want to make this your regular salon. read more

She was very helpful in listening to the general idea of what I wanted, but then weighing in with her professional opinion about what might work better. I actually just recently went to get my hair cut again elsewhere (about 3 months later), and the stylist made a point of complimenting her work. Loved it! Edit 3/26/16: I went back last week for my second visit to Karma and had another great experience. Although the cut didn't turn out exactly as I was hoping, they have a great policy there that allows you to come back in within 7 days with any questions or corrections. Cheryl made an effort to find a time that would work well for me and was patient, kind, and accommodating. That's a super solid customer service policy right there! Women with short hair: be not afraid! Holly gave me a great cut. I gave her very little info -- she just listened and got it right away. She also really sweet and funny and put me in a great mood. Holly offers the opportunity to come back for a fix if you're not thrilled -- I didn't need it. She also offers free mid-way cleanup to keep the short parts looking new. The salon is a really nice setting. Receptionist was great about fitting me in. Two of my friends also went to Holly recently after trying different places, and they both look great. We all have different hair textures and styles. Her sensibility works for straight girls *and* lesbians, and men. read more

Brooke is super sweet and very good! My wife has been going to her for years now, and my wife always comes home happy and looking great. Sometimes I wait there during the appointment, and it is never a problem; the sofa is comfy, and staff usually offers me tea while I am waiting. Brooke is especially great at custom hair colors; my wife went in a couple times with super specific bright colors she wanted (pinks and blues) and Brooke has always been spot on. read more

I tried Karma for the first time last fall after moving too far from my last salon to keep going. The ambiance is great and really laid back, and all of the stylists are extremely friendly. They offer free beverages including chai and wine, which is pretty awesome. I booked a cut with Nicole since she had openings at the time and have stuck with her since! I've seen her about 5 times now and everything she's done has been amazing! I've had her do a long bob, highlights, and just the other day had her take me from shoulder-length to super short, so she can definitely tackle a wide variety of styles. I also have the difficult almost-super-curly-but-not-quite hair and have received more than a few awkward cuts in my day. She's a total perfectionist and it shows. Her work is always flawless and she's happy to go back in and fix every little thing. She'll also give you her honest opinion on your style ideas and give you what you want while making sure it's flattering. I get loads of compliments every time I see her. Karma also gives free clean ups and bang trims as well as a 1 week grace period to get things fixed, though I've never needed to take advantage of the last one. read more

I realized I was in serious trouble after I had gotten my hair colored (partial highlights) by another hairdresser in the surround area. The coloring was full of "holidays" as in, patchy and completely uncoordinated. After a desperate search on Yelp for somewhere better, I made an emergency appointment at Karma, with Cheryl. Plus they sell my favorite hair product brand davines. I go to Holly for my haircuts, and Nicole for my balayage. Holly listens to exactly what you want, and also provides amazing input and ideas that ensure you are made to look your absolute best. She is extremely personable, and I get excited to not only be having a new hair do, but also be able to chit chat and spend some time with her. Nicole is THE Balayage guru. I plan on going to Holly and Nicole for the rest of my life or until they retire. Amazing hairdressers with amazing personality. Holly cuts my hair and cuts my eyebrows and I LOVE her. Seriously, she does an amazing job with both, they always come out perfect and it's well worth the price. Holly deserves 5 stars, no question in my mind. What really ticks me off is the emails I get from the salon every few months about Botox "parties". I'm 25 and don't need Botox, for one. I was extremely disappointed in the haircut I received here. I requested a TRIM and left with about 4 inches less of hair. When will hairdressers learn that they don't get paid by the inch? My hair was left "shagged" and much shorter than intended. The Moroccan oil could not make up for how much hair was missing. I delayed writing a review for a while because I wanted to see how it would grow in but my new hairdresser was appalled at how unevenly my hair had been cut.
