I needed a haircut desperately but hadn't found a place I was crazy about. After checking yelp for recommendations, I gave Broadway Hair a call to see if they take walk-ins. They do, and asked when I thought I might be in. I told them and the man who answered said I shouldn't have a problem getting in for a haircut at that time. I did have to wait about 30 minutes when I arrived; definitely not "no problem getting in". I had the time to spare, but had to keep feeding the meter my car was parked at out on Broadway. One stylist left for the day while I was waiting and didn't clean up their workstation, instead just saying to their coworkers, "Sorry I'm leaving a mess." Hmmmm . . . My haircut was fine. I didn't need anything drastic, and the stylist did a good job. I was a little put off that no prices were posted, and that when I went to pay, my stylist said they would give me $5 off their regular price for a woman's haircut. BTW, this directly contradicts another Yelper's report that they charge you on length of hair, instead of whether you're male or female. It irked me that they acted like they were doing me some huge favor by saving me $5, when I would really have preferred consistent pricing posted so I could determine whether I was really getting a bargain. So, haircut was fine, but this place definitely has some professionalism issues. I might return but will probably try and find a place that I like better instead. read more

I have a pixie cut and MAN is it a pain to keep finding someone who can do it right for not a huge amount of money. Found this place and called at 2:00pm Saturday, asked if they could squeeze me in before close at 3:30. They could, so I had an appointment for 3:15. Nice! Found the place okay, and when I got there they were warm and friendly. I was going to get my hair cut by Christine. I brought in pictures of my old haircuts and some celeb cuts I really liked. She got to work. As we talked, after about 15-20 minutes, she and I both realized that what I was asking for was a bit more off the sides and top than she was doing, so she kept working until she got it right. I really appreciated that. Washed and dried at the end, and by that time I had been there for about 50 minutes. I had to jet fast because my meter was going to expire, or else I might have stayed to ask about one thing that makes this a FOUR star review instead of FIVE: On the phone the owner quoted me a price of 30 dollars, and I was charged 35. I get that it took a little longer, and I'm really happy with my cut, but it's kind of the principal of the thing, you know? With tip, it was 40.35, when really I was hoping to keep it under 40 for sure with tip (I usually even tip a little more than 5 bucks when its 30 dollars). I'm definitely coming back to see Christine, it's a hard cut to get right especially at some of the super cheap chain places - a pixie from them ends up looking way too masculine. As a woman with very short hair, I'm not interested in paying $60-80 every 6 weeks to get the full salon experience. I want to sit down, have an inch of hair cut off, pay about $20, and be out of there in under 30 minutes. That's exactly what I got at Broadway Hair. They charge by hair length, rather than gender, so women with short hair can breathe a sigh of relief. The guy who cut my hair was nice, not chatty, and understood what I wanted. Its a barber shop. Don't expect a great haircut if you are particular about how you look. GOOD: You will get an OK haircut. Location is good. Lots of magazines. BAD: The haircuts I got were all uneven, except the first. If Dan, the guy that cuts your hair, is chatting away (the older guy, who looks like an old rock musician, talks too loud ALL THE TIME) you will get a mediocre haircut unless you are super vigilant. ANSWER to the owners answer to my review: I just happen to like old rock musicians. Maybe the bitter person is you. I reported on the lack of evenness of the haircuts I received. Yesterday I had a few hours to kill in New Haven. I also had hair that had not been cut in over a year. I called around to about ten places who either weren't open on Monday or were over $50. This turned out to be a blessing. I walked past Broadway Hair and decided to check one last place. A basic cut was $20 and wash/cut/blow dry was $30. I decided to stick around despite the fact that I was the only girl waiting in the long line of walk-ins. I am so, so happy I did. I had no requests other than long enough for a ponytail and short enough that it is all healthy. Not only did I get that, but I also got some much needed shape. By the end of the blow dry, I was already touching it. I didn't realize how bad my hair was until she fixed it. Next time I am in the area, I will not hesitate to return to Broadway Hair. Though next time I will make an appointment; there were LOADS of walk-ins. read more

I had a haircut at this place last week. I had asked for a simple straight line cut.The hairstylist styled it and made it look good. After a couple of days, I noticed my hair was cut unevenly. Love this place. The price is affordable, the staff is friendly and professional, it's spacious and clean, and I can usually get in without an appointment even though it's recommended. My only con with the place is that I wish they had one or two nights where they stayed open to 7:00 or 8:00 on the weekdays. As a Yale student, this place was definitely a little more expensive than other places, at ~25$ for a men's haircut. Despite this, my haircuts from Brenda were always really fantastic and grew out well, so I continued to go. (I never got a haircut from the other barber, Jim, so I can't comment on him). The store was clean, and Brenda was a lovely barber. In addition, Brenda definitely was better than any other barber I've gone to because she gave good recommendations about how my hair could be cut to make it look better and explained why. And she makes an effort to remember how your hair grows/looks to adjust how to cut your hair each time. I don't really get some of the negative reviews (most of which are complaining about the price), but I found this one of better barbershops I've gone to. The first time I came here I was worried, but Brenda took her time cutting my hair. And when I took her recommendation to cut my hair a certain way, she let me know if it wasn't working out, then she would fix it right there and then at the store. I'm not really that picky about my hair. As long as I can see where I'm going, I'm generally content. I've never really had a problem getting an appointment, once I needed to wait a day or two, but they're usually pretty accommodating. Most times I can just go in and get my hair cut without too much waiting. The price is fair, about $20 for a cut. Of course, it's right on Broadway (dur) so parking can be an issue, but there's the paid lot across the street, or you can do like me and bike downtown. read more

I made an appointment this morning for a haircut, and I realized that I literally haven't had my hair cut anywhere else for the last seven years at least. I've lived in the area a lot longer than that, and it took me years to find Broadway Hair. This is the *only* place I've been to in the New Haven area that has given me a consistently excellent haircut every single time I've come. I can't speak to how well they do with longer hair or complicated color jobs, since I just get a short haircut each time. However, for what I get, I like the fact that I don't have to get the same stylist every time in order to get a really good haircut. Dan and Jim have both cut my hair many times, and it's always looked great and then grown in really well. In fact, they could make more money off me if each visit didn't last me over three months. Everybody is super friendly and willing to work hard to give you the style you want, and they'll go back over your hair a couple of times to take a little more off if you're anything but fully satisfied. And the quality of the work they do is a huge bargain for what they charge, at least for a short cut like mine. If it's busy and you walk in, you may have to wait, but they're pretty good about giving you an estimate of how long it'll be. However, you should make an appointment if you don't want to have to wait. It's a popular place, and it can get busy at certain times of day. After years of getting inconsistent haircuts in the New Haven area, I'm really glad I found this place, and I'm glad that they continue to be friendly, consistent, and inexpensive. read more

I walked in around noon on a weekday and was given a chair immediately. Brenda asked a good amount of questions to make sure I got exactly what I wanted. I had very long hair but it was damaged and needed to be lobbed off. She made sure I was ok with this before going ahead (I was totally for it). Along the way, she confirmed what I wanted and even dried my hair early so we could see the length, and I decided to take a little more off. Her attention to detail was great. I'm a huge fan of this place and have been getting my hair cut here for the past 4 years since moving to the New Haven area. I've managed to get a walk-in appointment with no wait almost whenever I went. I started to schedule appointments and have had no trouble with availability. The price is really great as well: with student discount, a basic trim for me was around the same price as most chain hair cut places. I've never had a bad haircut from here and I've had appointments with nearly all the staff members. I came here a few weeks ago for the first time to get a haircut. I was originally told that Brenda or Christine would be cutting my hair, but when I got there, I ended up with Jim. (I wasn't thrilled about this - even though I didn't know any of the hairdressers, it was different from what I had been told; also because I had heard good things about Brenda and Christine and therefore agreed to this appointment on the phone.) The biggest issue I had was with the haircut itself. I have fairly simple needs when it comes to my hair, which I cut at most once a year and frequently cut myself: just for it to be even and not visibly choppy. Since I have thick, straight Asian hair, the latter is pretty important. He didn't ask me what I wanted, only what length I wanted, and started cutting away. For me, perhaps the most important part of the experience is having a discussion at the beginning of what exactly I want and/or asking the hairdresser for suggestions or to take the lead, but he was disinterested in having this conversation. This, however, isn't the reason why the haircut turned out poorly (I would've asked for a simple cut anyway). Compared to haircuts I've had even at budget barbershops elsewhere, his haircutting technique was very basic and not what I would expect from someone who cuts hair for a living. Towards the end, I pointed out that the two sides were uneven; he disagreed with me and didn't fix it after I'd asked him to. I didn't argue it much further, but really, one shouldn't have to strongly advocate for oneself at a haircut... In any case, I was so self conscious about my hair that I fixed it myself later that week. As for the other details, Jim wasn't particularly warm, but the other two hairdressers seemed more friendly and welcoming. The price was low for a women's haircut ($35 "student pricing" for a cut only, which along with any other pricing is not advertised anywhere online or in-store, not including tip), the price maybe being the saving grace of it all. The atmosphere/ambience of the place was nice and overall clean and organized. Still, I wouldn't waste that money here again. I don't expect a perfect haircut for $35, but I do expect at least an effort at customer service -- and I just didn't see that here, unfortunately. read more

Best haircut I've ever had. Dan cuts like no other. He has trimmed my short cut twice in the past few months. Every time I have received compliments and how good the cut was. I've trimmed my shortcut with other people but my hair has not grown out well. With Dan, my shortcut has grown out very well, so that it still looks like I got a fresh haircut and I don't need a new trim. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED DAN. Haircuts are also the most affordable I found for students in the area, with mine at $22-24. Very central location. read more

This hair cutting experience was a tragedy. The guys working there are great--they listen to what type of hair cut you want and cut it. Unfortunately, the older female hair cutter doesn't listen to the customer at ALL. I told her I wanted my hair trimmed about 1 cm all around--this way my overall hair style would be the same, just shorter. Simple, right? She told me she understood. 5 minutes into the hair cut, she starts cutting the top of my hair more than she cut the sides. I didn't notice until it was too late! Finally a male-friendly unisex barber shop where the staff is NOT a bunch of swearing, 250 lb "Italian-Americans", that spend more time arguing about how much they hate liberals, or how they got to be so fat, than cutting your hair. The vibe of the place is very warm and hip, and is truly "unisex" in its atmosphere (neither a sports bar nor a nail salon). The guy who runs the place does a great haircut, listens to what you want, and is a musician. The thing that usually sucks about a barber is what comes out of his mouth while he's working, so if football and liberal-bashing aren't your cup of tea, try having a conversation with this guy. read more

I wanted to like them because they are nice, but they just can't cut hair. Doing a mediocre job and saying "the hair looks gorgeous" unfortunately doesn't just cut it. I had a haircut with Brenda. I spent at least 5 minutes explaining exactly what I wanted and she clearly ignored everything I said. She made my pixie cut even shorter (I was growing it out). I hate when they do what they want and not listen to a word you say!!!! To make things worse, the cut was uneven and I had to return for them to fix it. I just moved to CT from CA and was hesitant to find a new stylist. But I'm so glad I gave Broadway a try. This place is a hidden gem! They got me in the same day I called, and the girl who cut my hair (Jenna) was amazing. She was very friendly, there were no awkward silences like there normally are when you get your hair cut, and we talked and laughed the whole time. The best part is that I got an amazing cut, shampoo, conditioner, and style/blow dry for $30. This cut would've cost at least twice that anywhere else in New Haven. So, sure the haircut is $17, but come on, where can you really get a haircut for less than $15 ANYWHERE (except in rando Asian countries where they charge $3 for a haircut and a scalp massage). Anyway, Broadway Hair is great. Ask for Jenna, she's my go-to-girl. She knows what would look good and listens to what you want. One time I went after a female customer and she seemed to love Jenna's work too, so both guys and girls can avail of Jenna's awesomeness. Compared to Phil's down the street which felt like walking into a random room with fresh beauty school grads, Broadway is great - cool decor, big-ass TV, and good conversation. I've been going to Jim for my haircuts since I first met him at a hair salon in Milford at the CT Post Mall. In 1980!! Since then, I have followed him to 3 different locations. I've had 3 dentists, 2 regular doctors and 3 lawyers in that time. And only one haircutter! Jim, Dan and the crew take the time to give you the cut or styling you want, all at a fair price. And the banter between them is like a comedy show - all at no extra charge! Highly recommended!! read more
