Cut, root color, glaze, and pintura highlights by Lucy
    S. M.

I have fine, curly hair and, after using another curly haircut method for years, I finally decided to go for my first Deva cut. I went to Lucy; she was fantastic and very knowledgeable. I also got my roots colored and did pintura highlights; it looks great! I appreciate that Lucy told me the types of product to use, but didn't push any products on me (as many salons do). I'm looking forward to seeing how this cut grows out and what Lucy will do next!

Wonderful experience! I had been having a problem figuring out what's best for my curl pattern. I'm biracial and just recently decided to wear it curly from now on. There's so many products out there for curly girls now, that it was becoming a bit confusing to find products best for me (ones that won't weigh my hair down or make it crunchy). It was evident that I needed the help of a professional. I made an appointment with Lucy and it was the best thing I've ever done! She was the sweetest and really listened to what I wanted. She managed to cut some beautiful layers in my hair for extra body and still keep the overall length of my hair. She educated me on what was best for my hair type. Overall, the experience was great! Lucy was great! I'm officially in love with my curly hair!

BEFORE JO BRUNO HAIR: This is how I messed up my hair. Take a look at my root and the undefined hair color

I don't usually take the time to write reviews, but this time it is very fair to do so. I had a great experience at Jo Bruno Hair Salon. Short story..., I literally ruined my hair last Sunday when trying to dye my hair by myself at home. My head was tricolor. I couldn't find many places opened on Sunday so that someone could take a look at me and give me a possible treatment solution. That is when I found Jo Bruno Hair. When I got there, the salon was pretty busy, but Rebecka was able to spare few minutes to talk to me. She calmed me down, explained my coloring options. Today I went to fix my hair and Rebecka was simply WONDERFUL. She was able to get very close to my natural hair color and I love it! I am definitely going back soon for a haircut! I would recommend Jo Bruno Hair Salon 100%. Overall the staff is very professional, knowledgeable and friendly. The salon is clean and relaxing.

As most of us with curly hair know, you can't just walk into any salon and expect to get an acceptable haircut. Many hairdressers will claim to know how to cut all types of hair, but it is a rare one that can actually live up to that claim. So when a salon comes along that specializes in curly hair I take notice. Jo Bruno is a small, cute little salon in New Haven. It is a drive for me, but after the disastrous cuts that I have had I decided to investigate. Jo (the owner) and Jesse are the only two stylists in the salon. I found them both to be very nice although the receptionist was a bit rude. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe she was having a bad day (although she was rude when I called to book the appt. as well). If you are familiar with Devachan in NYC, they follow their method of cutting curly hair. Which basically means they cut your hair dry and use Deva products. I've been here more than once. On my most recent visit I was happy with the haircut, although it is a little uneven. But super curly hair is a bitch to get even so I will wave that off. Other times I wasn't as happy but they were cuts that I could live with. Which says a lot when I think back on other haircuts that have made me want to inflict bodily harm or just swear off getting my hair cut all together. Unlike another Deva salon in New Haven they aren't at all pushy about the products. They also use microfiber towels instead of wasting paper towels to blot your hair dry which is a plus. Make sure you allow extra time for finding a parking spot. This area is full of one way streets and it can be a little confusing. The weekend is the best time to go since the City of New Haven doesn't ticket and you won't have to put change in the meters. Relatively close to IKEA in case you need to stop by. Minor complaints: The cape they put on has metal snaps in the back. So watch out when they put you under the dryer because those snaps heat up and burn your neck. Also the sink they wash your hair in is repositionable. So when they are washing your hair it tends to move around and push into your shoulders. Overall: If you have curly hair and are putting off getting your hair cut because you fear hairdressers you will be in good hands at this salon. I recommend giving Jo a shot. Cost: $55+tip. Not being embarrassed by your new haircut: Priceless. They cut straight hair too.

They do, and asked when I thought I might be in. I told them and the man who answered said I shouldn't have a problem getting in for a haircut at that time. I did have to wait about 30 minutes when I arrived; definitely not "no problem getting in". I had the time to spare, but had to keep feeding the meter my car was parked at out on Broadway. One stylist left for the day while I was waiting and didn't clean up their workstation, instead just saying to their coworkers, "Sorry I'm leaving a mess." Hmmmm . . . My haircut was fine. I didn't need anything drastic, and the stylist did a good job. I was a little put off that no prices were posted, and that when I went to pay, my stylist said they would give me $5 off their regular price for a woman's haircut. BTW, this directly contradicts another Yelper's report that they charge you on length of hair, instead of whether you're male or female. It irked me that they acted like they were doing me some huge favor by saving me $5, when I would really have preferred consistent pricing posted so I could determine whether I was really getting a bargain. So, haircut was fine, but this place definitely has some professionalism issues. I might return but will probably try and find a place that I like better instead.

For this reason, I have had more than one fobulous perm/dye job/you name it. I have also learned over time that my hair - dark, thin, and straight - doesn't require that much expertise to handle. Regardless, I find comfort in Korean hair salons, and am living proof of the efficacy of brainwashing. So when I found Park Jun on Orange around the same time that my bangs were going rogue, I decided to break my no-haircuts-in-New-Haven rule and see what happened. The space is clean, well-kept, and pretty open, with most of the interior visible through windowed walls from outside. I walked in and the lady on duty, who I suspect is the owner as there was no one else around, asked if I could wait for a little bit while she finished up with another customer (a male of, I suspect, the Korean persuasion, who minutes later had a spiffy haircut). I didn't wait long. I asked for a basic cut, and that's what I got. Shampoo, cut, blow-dry and all took twenty minutes or so, and cost a reasonable $40. Or was it $30? Shit, there go my "Useful" votes. The lady was very friendly and asked me questions about myself as if she were actually interested. She didn't judge me for my totally worthless language skills either. The one thing that I did find pretty funny was that I left the place with my hair styled almost exactly like hers, kind of straight with the ends curled in, and not a whole lot like mine when I walked in. It didn't matter though, as it washed back to normal, and I was happy with the cut. I'm glad I found this place and I'll be back again for East Coast hair maintenance.
