If it would be possible I would Give more stars. I was in a desperate situation with my daughter who had over processed her hair from blonde to black blue and green. Another salon felt they were not qualified to deal with this which brought her to tears. I decided to call Rimage and had the good fortune of getting Len who didn't hesitate to say... bring her in!!! Although he admitted this was quite a challenge he methodically went step by step until her hair was back to what my daughter said "looks like what I would naturally have growing" Len devoted an entire day to this and we couldn't have been treated any better by he or his staff. He remained focused while maintaining his great sense of humor! He is a master and his skill is unparalleled as is the quality of all the stylists there. I should preface this by saying I have never written a Yelp review... I never think they're worth my time. This is the happiest I have ever been leaving a hair appointment. Toni's work exceeded any expectation I could ever have for my biannual haircut. She gave me exactly what I asked for (brown natural lowlights and curtain bangs) in a way that suits my naturally wavy hair and face shape. The salon itself has the best ambience of supportive stylists and customers alike. I usually keep to myself, but the energy was so warm and fun. I'm moving away from New Haven within the next year, but I wouldn't hesitate to travel just to have another appointment. Pros: Green salon with healthier products. I went to Rimage for a haircut yesterday for the first time and I have to strongly disagree with the negative reviews listed here. I had an overwhelmingly positive experience. First off, Rimage is located on Chapel about a block before Tandoor in an older building that looks like a house - they told me it was built sometime in the 50s. I didn't think it was going to be impressive based off of the exterior, but the renovations inside are beautiful. Everything is new and clean, but still homey which put me immediately at ease. The space is expansive, too; the entire first floor is just dedicated to hair whereas the second floor is for their spa services. I didn't look at the second floor but what I saw on the first was beautiful and comfortable. The receptionist is sweet and hospitable - she offered me water, wine, coffee, etc and chatted with me while I waited a minute or two for my stylist. When my stylist came, Jaime, he was equally gracious. They definitely have politeness and professionalism covered here. Before he started to cut my hair Jaime asked me several questions about my hair -what I wanted to do with it today, how I usually wore it, what products/treatments I used, what my favorite quality about it was. I thought that last question was unique and important, because it showed he cared about bringing my favorite things about myself out. I just wanted a pretty basic trim with layers and tapering of my bangs which I'm attempting to grow out. He listened, and did this perfectly. I highly recommend this place! The haircut here was very reasonable prices for a nice salon (just $40) but the entire experience was high end. The whole staff made me feel comfortable and attended to, and Jaime showed me that he was invested in giving me exactly what I was looking for. Five stars. read more

It's quite telling when a shop finds the time and energy to host fundraiser and charity events. It suggests to me that they not only wish to support the community they're part of (and thus the community from where it gets it's business) but also have a strong enough customer base and income level to be able to afford it. I found myself at Rimagé after a friend sent me their flyer for the $25 Cut-a-Thon to benefit Liberty Community Services (an org that offers services to New Haveners with HIV/AIDS, mental illness, addiction, and helps those homeless achieve permanent housing. The idea is to give free cuts and shaves to encourage those homeless and indigent to spruce up for job interviews, etc. A benefit cut for a grad student budget? I had to go. Coming into the adorable storefront, I was so kindly greeted and offered coffee or wine, with a nice spread of hors d'oeuvre to keep me company as I waited. There was a steady stream of both Liberty House residents and paying customers, and the staff definitely kept a good balance of efficiency with courtesy. Toni took care of me, and was completely lovely and attentive from the hairwashing to the hairdrying. I felt comfortable, she wasn't overbearing (just the right amount of conversation) and left me with a professional trim of (what I personally believe is) difficult to manage thick Asian hair I haven't touched in almost 2 years. Mad props just for that. Good location, good people, good skills. What more can you ask? read more

I paid 65$ for haircut and shampoo today, done by the owner (i guess). I used to pay around 30$ but today i asked for shampoo (Shampooing was ok but not worth this much addition of money)...moreover they say that this was Not haircut but barber cut that's why becomes 65$. I know there is a price list but the designer sometimes needs to mention the price if the customers ask for that and price becomes double. Haircut (barber cut lol) was okay but not as much as for this price I bet (compared to other salons). I was feeling very unpleasant when get out of the salon...I have used here as it is close to my home and now need to find other one. Reply to ur answer: First i did not request "upgrade""scalp massage and blow dry", never. Did you hear those words from me...? It was the yesterday and I can clearly remember. Dear Len (owner of Rimage): Yes, indeed you are correct, this is a non-ideal forum to share such an intimate experience. The reason I feel compelled to do so is because of how EGREGIOUSLY POORLY the service was performed, and then, how RUDE and UNRESPONSIVE you have been in response to my concern. Out of consideration to possibly spare both of us any unnecessary public attention, I first shared my concern with you in a private email, and your response was similarly apathetic and downright rude. Your illogical and thoughtless response to me for something that was YOUR WRONG demonstrates the same train of thought that would prompt someone to open such a shoddy business in a second rate city. LADIES - please notice how he shames me for providing an honest review of an "intimate" experience in the interest of sharing information that is unflattering to his poor business practices. There is NO SHAME in getting such a "popular" service, and especially NO SHAME in sharing valuable information with my fellow patrons. Instead of taking the high road, Len goes low. As you all plainly see, his attitude plainly matches his bad business. --- Update: my skin was BURNING, PEELING, and irritated more than any other wax I have ever gotten. I relayed ALL of this information to the salon owner in an email and received no ownership of responsibility, and no apology, and a similar snarky response to what you see below. Yes, I was polite to my waxer when I left the room, because I am a decent human. I do not rush to conclusions, but I didn't get a chance to fully evaluate her job until I left. Then, it was too late and it is not in my nature to go back and snap at someone if nothing productive can be done about it. What is honestly more stunning than my telling her I was (what I later discovered to be falsely) "satisfied" was that she could SEE EVERYTHING and still thought she did a good job as a professional. I would have honestly kept it to myself and not even written the review if not for the fact that the situation got WORSE AND WORSE as time went on. The lack of ownership and apology is really awful customer service and business practice as well. To provide some perspective, as a native NYer, I have enjoyed waxes at Bliss Spa, Shobha, etc. I understand what a good quality wax is, but I also know that you can find gems of salons where you don't have to pay a lot for a great quality wax. I ALSO know when I am getting RIPPED OFF ($65 + tax + $10 tip = $80 brazilian here) for an awful job. Look at my review history and you'll see how few 1 or 2 star reviews I've given in my years on Yelp. I do not use this as a forum to vent, just to share genuine experiences, good or bad, for other consumers like myself. I have ZERO REASON TO LIE, what would I get out of that? I've been a customer at Rimage for a little over two years now. Toni is hands-down the best stylist who has touched my hair. I regularly receive compliments on my cut and color. In short: the staff was gracious, the haircut was amazing, Len (the owner) was great to talk to. I showed up 15 minutes late for a mini-facial and haircut, I had biked in the rain in my pants were wet, I was starving and dehydrated and tired, my iphone battery was dying. My hair was a complete disaster, full of knots from various abuses over the past couple of months. They took my coat and scarf, gave me tea and water, took my pants during the facial and put them in the dryer, didn't seem to mind when I accidentally left my wet socks on a chair in reception, found a plug to re-charge my iphone (the receptionist actually went outside in the rain to her car, I think). I loved my chat with Len, who is full of stories about New Haven, running a small business, and his teeth-cutting in the hair industry. I had been at Rimage years back for a Groupon massage years back and came for a wash, cut, and blow dry because the place I normally saw was unable to accommodate me. They responded to my email request for an appointment right away, which I appreciate. They also seem to run frequent specials on various sites including Yelp, LocalSaver and through their own social media pages. Once I got there, Toni, my stylist, took me earlier than my appointment and offered me water. It was a serene environment. She listened to what I wanted, gave me a conditioning treatment and washed, cut and styled my hair. I was happy with her work. One caveat is that although there is a alternate entrance to the first floor for those who can't use stairs, there is no handicapped access to the second floor where massages are given. read more

I had a manicure earlier in the year at Rimage Salon & Spa and it was hands-down the worst manicure I've ever received. The polish was applied clumsily, the layers were not dried before the next one was applied - and 10 minutes after I had left the salon, I already had scratches on some of the polish and another nail was completely ruined. They might be good with hair etc treatments - but this manicure was a nightmare! read more

I got a very artfully done haircut in New York City earlier this year, with a lot of layering and shaping, and then tried to find someone local who could keep it trimmed up in shape. At the well reviewed, hip, $$$ downtown New Haven salon I tried a couple times, not only did this not work out (even after bringing lots of photos of the original in fresh condition and discussion) but layers and shaping were chopped off that will require months of regrowth. Barbara took a look, guessed what had gone wrong, and came up with a plan to accommodate regrowth towards the look of my original cut while also still allowing me to look like I have an actual haircut--it's the first time I've left a salon feeling happy in a few months! It's one of the most skilled cuts I've gotten in New Haven. Additionally, when the color (first time I've had it done here, or with this brand--and the nighttime lighting made it more difficult for me to see the palate samples) came out much darker than I had asked for, I was offered a prompt, professional fix the next day that I'm satisfied with. read more

I have been a few times to get waxed based on yelp reviews for New Haven. Coming from an extremely well-reviewed NYC wax studio, I didn't think I'd find anything nearly as good in the Have. I was wrong. Rima is excellent, very interesting, and keeps the conversation going as much as you want which is really important when you're feeling a bit ... awkward. Not to mention that she does a thorough, pretty much painless job. As another reviewer said, they do have a great rewards program (if you tell friends/ on your birthday/ every 10ish times you go, discounted/free services). I love the house environment, which is both homey and tasteful. I've never had a problem with the staff, nor have I ever had to wait. I'm usually really cheap about salons but this place is worth the above-average prices. read more

It appears that at least two of the four current reviews on this site are fraudulent, so I thought Yelpers might appreciate a review from someone who actually patronizes Rimage. Have you ever been stopped by strangers who ask where you get your hair cut? That has happened to me twice since October. Twice. On another occasion, my friend's mother said, "No, dear, I'm not talking about a touch up -- where do you go to get it shaped? I mean you must go somewhere in New York, right?" I have never had a bad cut at Rimage -- all of the stylists are competent and friendly. But Lenny is a master. He has an artistic sensibility combined with decades of practical experience and a knowledge of hair that is scientific as well as technical. A skeptic by nature, I am reassured by facts and research. The first time I asked Len for a product recommendation, his explanation included terms I'd only ever heard in organic chemistry. I was sold. A cut with Lenny might be more expensive than what you'd pay at some other places in New Haven, but you get what you pay for. I promise that the price for a similar experience in a larger city would be at least 150%, and even more in NYC. I'm a bargain hunter; most of my clothes come from thrift stores. But your hair is your hair. If you want to look fantastic, go to Rimage. (Moreover there's a killer student discount). Finally, I first started going to Rimage not for my hair but for my nails, and that's how I met Rima. Rima is the glamorous older sister you never had. I recommend booking an appointment with her immediately. Be forewarned that if you are a straight male between the ages of 15 and 95, you will fall immediately and irrevocably in love. I've been here twice for massages, at the recommendation of my fiance...I'm very happy with Rimage's therapist. She has wonderfully strong hands and a delightful personality. The price's right and everyone in the office seems friendly and always offer coffee and/or water when I'm in there. My only complaint is the parking situation. It's tight and you often times have to double park in the back, which isn't a huge deal. read more
