I've been there twice. First time was during lunch time and the food was great (hence the 2 stars instead of 1). Second time (and probably the last time) was terrible! The samosas we ordered were very soggy and tasted microwaved. They definitely weren't fresh. There was no crisp to the shell. The food didn't have any flavor even though I asked them to make it a little hot. It was just hot, no other flavor. My friends who ordered theirs mild instead of hot said that there food had no flavor too. Probably the only thing that tasted decent was the chicken drumsticks. They even managed to mess up naans. The food was a waste of money and we barely ate more than a few bites. I was very disappointed in the quality of the food. I'm an avid fan of Indian food, and there are many options to choose from around Louisville. My husband and I tried two other Indian Restaurants (Little India Cafe, Bombay Grill), but wanted to try something on Bardstown Rd, where all the action happens. When we arrived around 7pm, there was only one other table occupied. The owners seemed to lurk around the door, hoping that someone would stop in. We were a bit nervous, wondering whether this was a good idea or not. We were pleasantly surprised. We tried the meat samosas, which were decent, but not the best I've had. The flavors were good, but there was no potato to pull the filing together. I digress. I tried my usual, the Lamb Korma, while my husband had the Saag Paneer. I've eaten a LOT of korma in my life, but this was by far one of the best sauces I've had. It wasn't just your run-of-the-mill creamy sauce; it boasted a depth of flavor with lots of spices AND herbs (the latter is often amiss in most of the korma I've tried). I tried the Saag, and it was equally amazing. I loved that the food was piping hot. I also tried the Lassi, but how can this ever go wrong? Overall, this was a good experience. As the night wore on, more people came in, and the owner seemed pleased. The service could use a bit more help. It was quick and efficient, but at times also unfriendly. I visit Kashmir probably once a month and always get the same thing: saag paneer, which is spinach with homemade cheese. I've had a lot of saag in my life, and I have to say this is my favorite. Often I'll order just saag (without the cheese) to go, which isn't on the menu, but they are happy to accommodate. I've had the buffet there as well, which is less than spectacular compared to a few of the more elaborate Indian restaurant buffets, but on par with most of the buffets I've visited across several Indian restaurants. I've also enjoyed their coconut soup, which, though mildly sweet, was quite enjoyable. Their masala tea offers a warm, spicy drink option, and their selection of imported beers is decent and fairly priced. The reason I'm giving only 4 stars to Kashmir is because their service is less than friendly. The servers are often impatient and rude, but overall, I really enjoy Kashmir and visit it frequently. read more

Absolutely stuffed myself (and had some to take home) for very little money. I tried: meat samosa (spiced turnover stuffed with minced lamb & spices) - excellent Garlic Nan and Peshawari Nan (which is a soft leavened bread stuffed with dry fruits, topped with coconut), both were amazing and Chicken Tikka Masala (boneless white meat tandoori chicken cooked in a delightful bright, tangy cream sauce.). I find this one of the all around tasting ethnic food places I have tried. Lynn's was my PRIORITY breakfast stop and this was my MUST HAVE for dinner or lunch when coming to town. Jack Fry's for an upscale dinner as it's one of the closest I have found in Louisville to LA's top eateries. Been eating here since 02 after moving from West Coast. Lots of great food out there but luckily I found this spot. This is not an upscale restaurant. Sits in an old house on Bardstown and has a patio when the weather is nice. I think some of the negative reviews think that a building has to be new and you must pay exorbitant prices for good food or they have their heads up their own asses in the first place. Not the case, some of the best Indian comes out of hole in the wall places. But I am also familiar with top rated Indian restaurants like Rasika in DC (Indian friend's favorite). I have never in all my years had bad service, pricing issues or bad food. I have always found the staff friendly and going out of their way. I can only imagine what amazing attitudes some of these reviewers must exude. Have a pretty good idea of what class of person we are dealing with. Don't think many people know what AUTHENTIC Naan or Indian food is like. I have always found food to be some of the best of compared to countless others I have tried. Across the board, I find all of their dishes quite appealing compared to many places where I only like one or two of there dishes. Properly spiced and balanced. if you can't make it for lunch buffet. Try one of the dinner special thalis! I do not like chicken Tandoori but their buffet serves this with veggies that I do like. Love their saag paneer. Pappadam with spicy onion chutney. Raita. They have the best "Mix Pickle" (acquired taste). Kheer and gulab jamun are some of the better tasting I have tried for desert. Like any place, treat your servers with respect. Don't go in expecting it to be loke "some other place". Try the buffet or sampler to find what tbey do well. This place is a gem. I've driven past it daily for years but have never been inside. Today was the day to check out their weekend lunch buffet. For only $10, you can fill up on yummy Indian cuisine. The buffet had everything I would have wanted from the menu, plus I got to try new things as well. Several chicken options, vegetables, rice, naan, salad, and even some desserts. At the end of the buffet is also a carafe of chai that is continuously refreshed. Delicious Indian food at a great price. So glad I finally gave Kashmir a try. Plopping a reasonably priced, all-you-can-eat lunch buffet in the highlands was, of course, a much needed great idea, years ago when Kashmir was two doors down from where it is today. I can never pick anything off of the expansive menu, where every combination of chicken, lamb, beef, and vegetarian Indian dishes and breads seem to be listed, so I tend to only go when the lunch buffet is in service; that way I don't have to choose only one! People compare the food unfavorably to Dakshin, but I sometimes prefer Kashmir. Maybe that's a buffet vs. entree thing, or maybe it's just that I'm used to Kashmir. They're both great, either way. The service can be a bit over-eager, but they're nice and get the job done, and that the building is a converted house makes for a cozy atmosphere and at times cramped seating. But it's a nice local Indian dive that's been good to the neighborhood and is well worth the trip. read more

After living in Tucson, I have become a major Mexican food snob. This last trip home I realized that living in California has ruined Indian cuisine for me. I can walk into any strip mall joint in Sunnyvale and get food ten times as good as what I can find in Louisville. When my palate was less refined, Kashmir was a fine and convenient place to satisfy one's cravings for Indian food in the 'ville. Now, I can identify the fresh herbs and spices that are missing. I can tell that the meats haven't been slow-cooking as long as they should to absorb all the flavors. And, I am sure that they are using substitutes for traditional ingredients; their tomato-based sauces taste suspiciously like Campbell's soup. Overall, the food is sadly bland--but, I'm sure it will survive considering the incredibly limited competition. This would be a 2 star joint, but I'm giving an extra star because I'm sure it can't be easy to get good ingredients in the KY. read more

Not a lot open on Christmas Day so I thought I would try Kashmir. My friend and I went there I ordered an appetizer of various breads he got the mango chicken and I got the curry lamb. Everything came out at the same time. A lot of places don't understand the concept the the appetizer comes out first. While we ordered two completely different dishes they looked exactly the same. I ordered spicy he ordered mild. His was spicy mine was mild. I ordered a beer which was warm and was never asked if I needed another. The poor child manning the cash register looked like that she would rather be at the mall with her friends. The food was edible but nothing special. The service was marginal. Kashmir has been a favorite of mine since first having it years ago. If I am in the mood for Indian food, this is where I go. The staff have always treated me well here and remember who I am over the years. The food is yummy as well! A few of my favorite dishes here are nav ratan korma, channa saag and aloo gobhi. They also have large indian beers that are fun to share with your dining partner! They offer a buffet for lunch as well, which is a nice way to try a variety of items on their menu. if the weather is nice, you should def sit outside on their patio. My experiences here have been quite the opposite from Jim's, but it could be that I've only come for dinner. Some of my best memories of Louisville are sitting on the patio at Kashmir with a group of friends on Sunday night. The food we've had was always good, and the service was prompt even for large groups. This is an excellent place to take friends that are new to Indian cuisine. A good friend of mine loves Indian dishes, and this is the only place she will frequent. The Rogan Josh (Lamb curry) at Kashmir is amazing. This is what my order is every time; just talk your friends into ordering the other dishes you want to try - always works for me. I would say this is the best Indian Restaurant in Louisville, let alone anywhere that I have been. The food is always excellent and freshly prepared. Before I moved, I always got Lamb Tikka Masala. If you are not used to some Indian food, it may be spicier than what you might expect. They have always asked me if I want it "mild, medium or hot." If you get the hot, you might want to order a mango lassie to cool your tongue down a bit! I've always notice that they are good about making sure your glass of water is always full. The Sat/Sun buffet maybe smaller that some of the other places, but it sill much better! Go there long enough and the owner will come to sit and talk to you for a bit, if it's not busy. If I hadn't been there in a while, he always asked me "Where have you been?!?!? I've missed you!" You don't get that too many other places. I went to Kashmir last night with a party of three and had dinner on the patio. I definitely prefer to sit outside here so I can take in the Bardstown Road scenery. The interior of Kashmir is nothing to write home about. Our server was prompt and mildly friendly. I had the vegetarian appetizer platter and a glass of red wine. The other two in my party both ordered chicken korma ("hot"), naan (one plain, one peshawari), and mango lassis. Our food came out quickly and with the correct level of spice. Everything was good - not fantastic, but certainly worth the price and overall very tasty. Other Indian restaurants in the area have slightly better food, but the service at Kashmir is usually better. Yesterday, I (BF) went into this restaurant with my toddler. When we walked in, we weren't greeted with a friendly tone, but I overlooked it. The young man was helping another customer and asked if it was dine in or carry-out, and I replied carry-out. He kept going and I asked for a menu, he replied "over there". I looked around and didn't see any, and asked again, he said "over there in the box". Once I found the menus, we ordered and waited for our food. I noticed that when other customers came in, he greeted them with a smile and seated them so respectfully. There were 3-4 other walk-ins and he made sure to make them feel welcomed. When we got our food, instead of handing me my bag, he sat it on the table, next to me. He threw some stuff in my bag and said "here you go". When I got home, I saw that he had thrown sauces in my bag and they burst open all over my containers. The chicken was burnt, I couldn't feed it to my child because he wouldn't have been able to chew it. The naan was burnt, the samosa was hard and over cooked, and the rice was stuck together. This was absolutely the WORST experience that I have ever had at any Indian restaurant in Louisville. The service was terrible as well as the food. I wasted almost $30 on this food. I do not recommend to anyone, especially if you're a woman going in alone with a small child, obviously, we're not wanted there. And to think, I skipped tacos for this. Smh, NEVER AGAIN. read more

This is my favorite Indian restaurant in town. It has a homey feel inside, but I usually like to call in my order and take it to go. I like to get the vegetarian platter as an appetizer (it's more food and more variety than the non-vegetarian). My rating is based on the food taste- We are here for dinner last night and the only complaint I would have is that the music from the restaurant next door was too loud. The food was AMAZING! Mouth watering, can't wait to go back, DELICIOUS! Seriously the best Indian I've ever had. We just moved here from Manhattan so you can imagine the culture shock when it comes to food. However, Kashmir was better than all of the places we tried in New York. We ordered lamb meat samosas, chicken tikka masala, and lamb vindaloo. Our water glasses were constantly full, our servers were pleasant (quiet) and the outdoor atmosphere was unexpected. There was an up charge for rice-$2 which was unexpected. My boyfriend and I went to Kashmir a couple of weeks ago. He'd been before and it was my first time. We'd been walking around in the highlands for a while and I couldn't make up my mind about what I wanted to eat as usual. Being the extremely picky eater that I am, I was definitely skeptical about trying it after we'd already walked past. We went in to check out the menu. Since it was lunchtime they had the buffet set up and the owner (I think) said we could take a look at it. It wasn't huge or anything, but I decided to try it since there were a variety of things and since I'd never really had Indian food it'd give me a chance to try other things in case I didn't like something, rather than having to order one item off of the menu. The food was absolutely amazing! A few of the things I tried were the curry chicken, chicken tika masala, some thing with spinach and cheese, tandoori chicken, garlic nana, rice and some kind of sweet dessert balls (don't know what they were called.) Kinda reminded me of doughnut holes but wet on the inside? The only complaint I have about Kashmir is the odd atmosphere and the service. The inside isn't much to look at, pretty boring. No music. Basic cups and plates. That being said I'd love to come back when the weather is warmer and eat on the patio. There was only one or two other tables in the restaurant when we were there. It was really quiet and made me feel like I couldn't talk loud or something. The server would basically refill our waters after every drink and that was pretty weird/borderline annoying. The owner was basically peering out of the window, which was like a foot away from me looking for potential customers. He might as well have sat down at our table!
